The object of the study was to compare two commercial root canal sealers: Ketac-Endo (a glass ionomer cement) and Fill Canal (a zinc oxide-eugenol cement). A total of 34 root canals from dog premolars with vital pulps were used. After instrumentation, the root canals were sealed with Ketac-Endo and Fill Canal cements using gutta-percha and a lateral condensation technique. After 270 days the animals were sacrificed with an anesthetic overdose and the maxillae and mandibles were removed and fixed in formalin for 48 h. After routine histological processing the sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Mallory trichrome stains. Microscopic analysis revealed that Ketac-Endo cement presented better results than Fill Canal cement.

Indium-tin oxide nanostructures were deposited by excimer laser ablation in a nitrogen atmosphere using catalyst-free oxidized silicon substrates at 500 degrees C. Up to 1 mbar, nanowires grew by the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism, with the amount of liquid material decreasing as the deposition pressure increased. The nanowires present the single-crystalline cubic bixbyite structure, oriented < 100 >. For the highest pressure used, pyramids were formed and no sign of liquid material could be observed, indicating that these structures grew by a vapor-solid mechanism. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. ZnO:Eu3+ (0.1 and 3 at%) with average particle size of 500 nm were prepared by the Pechini method. Photoluminescence spectroscopy evidences that there is no energy transfer between ZnO and Eu3+ ion. The emission spectrum at 77 K shows that Eu3+ ions occupy at least three different sites in ZnO:Eu 3 at% sample. The experimental intensity parameter Omega(2) indicates that Eu3+ ions in the sample doped with 3 at% occupy sites where 4-configurational levels can better mix with opposite-parity states than those in the sample doped with 0.1 at%. Strong interest in developing technology for visual information. stimulates research for thin film electroluminescent devices. Here, for the first time, we report that thulium- and terbium-doped zinc-oxide films are suitable for electroluminescence applications. Two different devices were assembled as lTO/LiF/ZnO:RE/LiF/Al or ITO/SiO2/ZnO:RE/SiO2/Al, where ZnO:RE is a film of zinc oxide containing 10 at% of Tb3+ or Tm3+. Electroluminescence spectra show that besides a broad emission band with maximum around 650 nm assigned to ZnO, also emission lines from Tb3+ at 484 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), 543 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), and 589 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(4)), or from Tm3+ at 478 nm ((1)G(4) -> H-3(6)), and 511 mn (D-1(2) -> H-3(5)) were detected. Intensity of emission as function of applied voltage and current-voltage characteristic are shown and discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the microbial leakage of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Portland cement (PC), Sealapex and zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) as root-end filling materials.Study design: An in vitro microbial leakage test (MLT) with a split chamber was used in this study. A mixture of facultative bacteria and one yeast (S. aureus + E. faecalis + P. aeruginosa + B. subtilis + C. albicans) was placed in the upper chamber and it could only reach the lower chamber containing Brain Heart Infusion broth by way of leakage through the root-end filling. Microbial leakage was observed daily for 60 days. Sixty maxillary anterior human teeth were randomly assigned to different groups - MTA and PC (gray and white), Sealapex + zinc oxide and ZOE, control groups and subgroups to evaluate the influence of EDTA for smear layer removal. These materials were further evaluated by an agar diffusion test (ADT) to verify their antimicrobial efficacy. Data were analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. Results: In the MLT, Sealapex + zinc oxide and ZOE did not show evidence of microbial leakage over the 60-day experimental period. The other materials showed leakage from the 15th day. The presence of smear layer influenced microbial leakage. Microbial inhibition zones were not observed in all samples tested by ADT.Conclusion: Sealapex + zinc oxide and ZOE did not show microbial leakage over the experimental period, whereas it was verified within 15 to 45 days in MTA and Portland cement.

Zinc oxide can be obtained by thermal decomposition of hydrozincite, a topochemical reaction. This work reports the relation between zinc oxide morphology and the precursor zinc hydroxide carbonate precipitation time. The morphological evolution was monitored by SEM, IR and XRD. Zinc oxide obtained from initially precipitated hydrozincite consists of porous spherical aggregates and shows a single Zn-O IR vibrational band. At longer periods of precipitation time the aggregates were transformed into spherulitic-shaped zinc oxide particles showing the Zn-O split vibrational band. X-ray patterns show that the hexagonal zinc oxide phase is substantially increased as a function of hydrozincite precipitation time. © 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Zinc oxide varistors are very complex systems, and the dominant mechanism of voltage barrier formation in these systems has not been well established. Yet the MNDO quantum mechanical theoretical calculation was used in this work to determine the most probable defect type at the surface of a ZnO cluster. The proposed model represents well the semiconducting nature as well as the defects at the ZnO bulk and surface. The model also shows that the main adsorption species that provide stability at the ZnO surface are O-, O2 -, and O2.

In this work, zinc oxide samples were obtained from hydroxycarbonate by thermal decomposition at 300°C. Zinc hydroxycarbonate samples were produced by homogeneous precipitation over different periods of time. The method used to obtain zinc oxide produces different morphologies as a function of the precursor precipitation time. Among the obtained particle shapes were porous spherical aggregates, spherulitic needle aggregates, and single acicular particles. This work investigated spherulitic needle-aggregate formation and the correlation among morphology, domain size, and microstrain. Transmission electron microscopy data revealed that the acicular particles that form the spherulitic needle aggregates consist of nanometer crystallites. Apparent crystallite size and microstrain in the directions perpendicular to (h00), (h0l), (hk0), and (00l) planes were invariable as a function of precursor precipitation time. From the results, it was possible to conclude that the precursor precipitation period directly influenced the morphology of the zinc oxide but did not influence average crystallite size and microstrain for ZnO samples. Therefore, using this route, it was possible to prepare zinc oxide with different morphologies without microstructural alterations. © 2001 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the antimicrobial activity of glass ionomer (GIC) and zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) cements against Candida albicans. Standardized GIC and ZOE specimens were maintained in contact with C. albicans suspension (1 x 10(6) cells/ml) at 37 degrees C for 24 h, 48 h or 7 days. A control group without any testing cement was included. After the incubation period, aliquots of 0.1 ml were plated on Sabouraud's agar, and then the number of colonies was counted. The results were expressed as values of logarithms of colony-forming units per milliliter (log CFU/mL) and were analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. After 48 h of incubation, the ZOE group presented no growth of C. albicans. GIC and control groups presented similar mean values at all tested periods. According to the results obtained, it could be concluded that, under the experimental conditions, ZOE cement was more effective in vitro against C. albicans than GIC.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance, egg quality and morphometry of the reproductive tract, liver, pancreas and tongue of laying hens submitted to different molting methods. Two hundred and eighty eight 72-week-old Isa brown layers were distributed according to a completely randomized design with six treatments (molting methods) and six replicates of eight birds each. Layers were fed diets containing 3000 ppm zinc oxide, 60 ppm or 120 ppm nicarbazin, 30 ppm or 60 ppm salinomycin, or were submitted to feed fasting. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by the test of Tukey at 5% probability level. Molting methods alternative to feed fasting were effective to induce molting in layer and provided good performance results in the second laying cycle.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibiofilm activity against Enterococcus faecalis, compressive strength. and radiopacity of Portland cement (PC) added to zirconium oxide (ZrO2), as radiopacifier, with or without nanoparticulated zinc oxide (ZnO).The following experimental materials were evaluated: PC, PC + ZrO2, PC + ZrO2 + ZnO (5%), and PC + ZrO2 + ZnO (10%). Antibiofilm activity was analyzed by using direct contact test (DCT) on Enterococcus faecalis biofilm, for 5 h or 15 h. The analysis was conducted by using the number of colony-forming units (CFU/mL). The compressive strength was performed in a mechanical testing machine. For the radiopacity tests, the specimens were radiographed together with an aluminium stepwedge. The results were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests, with level of significance at 5%. The results showed that all materials presented similar antibiofilm activity (
