ABSTRACT Structural safety verification of both structures allowing a certain degree of deterioration in design and deteriorated existing structures needs strength models that factor in the effects of deterioration. In case of corrosion of steel bars in reinforced concrete structures, the resistance depends on many things such as the remaining cross-section of the corroded reinforcement bars, the stress-strain diagrams of steel, the concrete-reinforcement bond and corrosion-induced concrete cracking or spalling. Accordingly, the force transfer through the contact surface between concrete and reinforcement, bond, is one of the most important aspects to consider and it is the basis of the structural performance of reinforced concrete. Bond must assure anchorage of reinforcement and transmit shear stresses as a consequence of the different stresses along a structural element As a consequence of corrosion, the bond development may be affected and hence the transfer of longitudinal stresses. This PhD Thesis deals with ultimate limit state bond behaviour in structural concrete with corrode steel bars. The main objective is to obtain a realistic and reliable model for the assessment of bond within the context of structural safety verifications of reinforced concrete members with corroded steel bars. In that context, an experimental programme of eccentric pull-out tests were conducted, with different specimens, ones without corrosion and others subjected to accelerated or natural corrosion with different corrosion degrees. This type of bond test reproduces in a realistic and reliable way bond stresses in the anchorage zone. Moreover, for conducting these tests it was necessary to develop both a test procedure and also a data acquisition system including the use of an embedded fibre-optic sensing system with fibre Bragg grating sensors to obtain the representative parameters of bond strength in structural concrete with corroded steel bars. Furthermore, the compilation of data from bond studies with corroded steel bars from scientific literature, including tests conducted in the present study, along with the identification of the relevant variables influencing bond behaviour for both corroded and non-corroded steel bars was used to obtain a realistic and reliable formulation for bond assessment in corroded and non-corroded steel bars by multiple linear regression analysis. The proposed formulation was validated with a number of statistical criteria and compared to other models from scientific literature. Moreover, an analysis of the influencing variables of the proposed formulation has been performed. Also, a simplified and efficient numerical model has been obtained and validated with several tests performed in this PhD Thesis for simulating the bond in corroded and non-corroded steel bars. Finally, a proposal for the assessment of corrosion-damaged beams with stress field models including bond assessment with the proposed formulation is presented. The conclusions raised in this work have allowed a realistic and reliable bond assessment in corroded steel bars. Furthermore, bond assessment has been included within the context of structural safety verifications in corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete elements.

ABSTRACT The aim of this project is to study the effects of using concrete structures as thermo-active constructions, either as energy foundations or other kind of thermo-active ground structures, or as a thermally activated building structure utilizing its own thermal mass conductivity and storage capacity to heat and cool buildings, based on renewable or “free” energy sources. The pipes, filled with a heat carrier fluid, that are embedded into the building´s concrete elements may bring on two different adverse effects on concrete structures. In one hand, the consequence of thermal variations and, on the other hand, because of the fact that the pipes are inside of the concrete mortar and in direct contact with the reinforcing steel bars. For this reason, different types of specimens and testing procedures have been proposed to discuss the effects of temperature (20º, 40ºC, 70ºC y 100ºC) on the performance of two different hardened concrete: H-25 and H-30, and the effects of having the pipes embedded in different positions inside of specimens made of two types of concrete, H-25 and H-30, and with two kind of cast, cylindrical and cubical. The experimental program includes the use of compressive strength test and also pull-out test, in order to investigate the interfacial adhesion quality and interfacial properties between steel bar and concrete. The results of the mechanical test showed that the increase of temperature in hardened concrete specimens lower than 70ºC, and the introduction of embedded pipes placed in parallel to the load, in cylindrical or cubic specimens, does not jeopardize the mechanical properties of concrete with strength decreases higher than 20%.

The aim of this study was the determination of the deforming micromechanisms of needlepunched felts subjected to impact loads. A large experimental campaign has been carried out to analyze the influence of the fiber alignment in the ballistic performance. Ballistic limit curves of predeformed samples were compared. The fiber realignment was experimentally measure by means of 2D X-Ray diffraction. Higher specific absorption was observed for samples with a more isotropic mechanical response. A constitutive physicallybased model was developed within the context of the finite element method, which provided the constitutive response for a mesodomain including micromechanical aspects as fiber alignment, fiber sliding and pull-out. The macroscopic response has been validated with the experimental results, showing a very good agreement. The absorbed energy by the material during the impact was predicted and the fiber realignment evolution was also obtained.

Nonwoven fabrics are a class of textile material made up of a disordered fiber network linked by either thermal, chemical or mechanical bonds. They present lower stiffness and strength (as well as processing cost) than the woven counterparts but much higher deformability and energy absorption capability and are used in many different engineering applications (including thermal insulation, geotextiles, fireproof layers, filtration and water absorption, ballistic impact, etc). In particular, needle-punched nonwoven fabrics manufactured with high strength fibers present an excellent performance for ballistic protection, providing the same ballistic protection with one third of the areal weight as compared to dry woven fabrics. Nevertheless, very little is known about their deformation and fracture micromechanisms at the microscopic level and how they contribute to the macroscopic mechanical properties. This lack of knowledge hinders the optimization of their mechanical performance and also limits the development of physically-based models of the mechanical behavior that can be used in the design of structural components with these materials. In this thesis, a thorough study was carried out to ascertain the micromechanisms of deformation and the mechanical properties of a needle-punched nonwoven fabric made up by ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers. The deformation and energy dissipation processes were characterized in detail by a combination of experimental techniques (macroscopic mechanical tests at quasi-static and high strain rates, ballistic impact, single fiber and multi fiber pull-out tests, optical microscopy, X-ray computed tomography and wide angle X-ray diffraction) that provided information of the dominant mechanisms at different length scales. The macroscopic mechanical tests showed that the nonwoven fabric presented an outstanding strength and energy absorption capacity. It was found that fibers were initially curved and the load was transferred within the fabric through the random and isotropic network of knots created by needlepunching, leading to the formation of an active fiber network. Uncurling and stretching of the active fibers was followed by fiber sliding and pull-out from the entanglement points. Most of the strength and energy dissipation was provided by the extraction of the active fibers from the knots and final fracture occurred by the total disentanglement of the fiber network in a given section at which the macroscopic deformation was localized. However, although the initial fiber orientation distribution was isotropic, the mechanical properties (in terms of stiffness, strength and energy absorption) were highly anisotropic. Pull-out tests of multiple fibers at different orientations showed that structure of the knots connected more fibers in the transverse direction as compared with the machine direction. The better fiber interconnection along the transverse direction led to a denser active fiber skeleton, enhancing the mechanical response. In terms of affinity, fabrics deformed along the transverse direction essentially displayed affine deformation {i.e. the macroscopic strain was directly transferred to the fibers by the surrounding fabric, while fabrics deformed along the machine direction underwent non-affine deformation, and most of the macroscopic strain was not transferred to the fibers. Based on these experimental observations, a constitutive model for the mechanical behavior of the mechanically-entangled nonwoven fiber network was developed. The model accounted for the effects of non-affine deformation, anisotropic connectivity induced by the entanglement points, fiber uncurling and re-orientation as well as fiber disentanglement and pull-out from the knots. The model provided the constitutive response for a mesodomain of the fabric corresponding to the volume associated to a finite element and is divided in two blocks. The first one was the network model which established the relationship between the macroscopic deformation gradient and the microscopic response obtained by integrating the response of the fibers in the mesodomain. The second one was the fiber model, which took into account the deformation features of each set of fibers in the mesodomain, including non-affinity, uncurling, pull-out and disentanglement. As far as possible, a clear physical meaning is given to the model parameters, so they can be identified by means of independent tests. The numerical simulations based on the model were in very good agreement with the experimental results of in-plane and ballistic mechanical response of the fabrics in terms of the macroscopic mechanical response and of the micromechanisms of deformation. In addition, it provided additional information about the influence of the microstructural features (fiber orientation, anisotropic fiber connectivity, affinity) on the mechanical performance of mechanically-entangled nonwoven fabrics.

Examining a team’s performance from a physical point of view their momentum might indicate unexpected turning points in defeat or success. Physicists describe this value as to require some effort to be started, but also that it is relatively easy to keep it going once a sufficient level is reached (Reed and Hughes, 2006). Unlike football, rugby, handball and many more sports, a regular volleyball match is not limited by time but by points that need to be gathered. Every minute more than one point is won by either one team or the other. That means a series of successive points enlarges the gap between the teams making it more and more difficult to catch up with the leading one. This concept of gathering momentum, or the reverse in a performance, can give the coaches, athletes and sports scientists further insights into winning and losing performances. Momentum investigations also contain dependencies between performances or questions if future performances are reliant upon past streaks. Squash and volleyball share the characteristic of being played up to a certain amount of points. Squash was examined according to the momentum of players by Hughes et al. (2006). The initial aim was to expand normative profiles of elite squash players using momentum graphs of winners and errors to explore ‘turning points’ in a performance. Dynamic systems theory has enabled the definition of perturbations in sports exhibiting rhythms (Hughes et al., 2000; McGarry et al., 2002; Murray et al., 2008), and how players and teams cause these disruptions of rhythm can inform on the way they play, these techniques also contribute to profiling methods. Together with the analysis of one’s own performance it is essential to have an understanding of your oppositions’ tactical strengths and weaknesses. By modelling the oppositions’ performance it is possible to predict certain outcomes and patterns, and therefore intervene or change tactics before the critical incident occurs. The modelling of competitive sport is an informative analytic technique as it directs the attention of the modeller to the critical aspects of data that delineate successful performance (McGarry & Franks, 1996). Using tactical performance profiles to pull out and visualise these critical aspects of performance, players can build justified and sophisticated tactical plans. The area is discussed and reviewed, critically appraising the research completed in this element of Performance Analysis.

Conclusion. The new Provox(R) NID (TM) non- indwelling voice prosthesis investigated in this study provides a good option for laryngectomized patients using non- indwelling voice prostheses and can potentially improve safety and increase patients' satisfaction with their voice and speech. Objective. To investigate the feasibility of and patient satisfaction with the Provox NID non- indwelling voice prosthesis. Material and methods. Pre- and post- study questionnaires were used to evaluate the patients' former voice prosthesis and the Provox NID voice prosthesis. In addition, measurements of pull- out force, maximum phonation time and loudness were made for both voice prostheses. In vitro measurements of airflow characteristics were also made. Following a 6- week trial, all patients provided feedback on the new voice prosthesis and the results were used to further improve the Provox NID. This final version of the new voice prosthesis was subsequently trialled and evaluated by 10 patients 6 months later. Results. Overall results showed that patient satisfaction with the Provox NID non- indwelling voice prosthesis was favourable. The pull- out force for the new prosthesis was significantly higher than that for the formerly used prosthesis and its aerodynamic characteristics were better.

Sodium cyanide poison is potentially a more humane method to control wild dogs than sodium fluoroacetate (1080) poison. This study quantified the clinical signs and duration of cyanide toxicosis delivered by the M-44 ejector. The device delivered a nominal 0.88 g of sodium cyanide, which caused the animal to loose the menace reflex in a mean of 43 s, and the animal was assumed to have undergone cerebral hypoxia after the last visible breath. The mean time to cerebral hypoxia was 156 s for a vertical pull and 434 s for a side pull. The difference was possibly because some cyanide may be lost in a side Pull. There were three distinct phases of cyanide toxicosis: the initial phase was characterised by head shaking, panting and salivation; the immobilisation phase by incontinence, ataxia and loss of the righting reflex; and the cerebral hypoxia phase by a tetanic seizure. Clinical signs that were exhibited in more than one phase of cyanide toxicosis included retching, agonal breathing, vocalisation, vomiting, altered levels of ocular reflex, leg paddling, tonic muscular spasms, respiratory distress and muscle fasciculations of the muzzle.

Poster. Introduction: One in five menand one half of women over the age of 50 will experience a bone fracture, whichis frequently accompanied by poor bone health. This combination of poor bonehealth and fracture is a two edge sword, because not only does poor bone healthmake fractures more likely, it also reduces the efficacy of standard fracturetreatments. Currently available surgical fixation devices that were originallydeveloped for healthy bone, such as pins, plates and bone screws, are often noteffective for patients with osteoporosis, resulting in unsatisfactory outcomesor longer and more painful recovery times. One major issue is the design ofbone screws, which can loosen or pull-out from osteoporotic bone. Osteopenicscrews with larger outer thread diameters have been developed to try andaddress this problem. The larger diameter screws have been shown to be 60–70 %stronger in lab tests of individual screws but the larger diameter screwscannot be used with the standard spacing in fixation plates without the risk ofcausing fractures between the screws. In addition, many fractures occur nearjoints where there is not room to increase the spacing between screws. Therefore, new bone screws are needed for treatment of fractures in osteoporoticbone. Materials and Methods: Afterdeveloping a novel bone screw design, we fabricated screws using rapidprototyping methods. Screws were inserted into 10 pcf density sawbones polyurethanefoam as a model for osteoporotic bone. Pull-out tests were conducted using theprototype bone screw design and the standard screw design for comparison inaccordance with ASTM 543-13. Results and Discussion: Ourprototype screws have the same outer diameter as standard bone screws, but haveoptimised threads. For pull-out tests in 10 psf density sawbones poly-urethanefoam, the prototype screw design was 60 % stronger than the standard bone screwdesign (p<0.01). Conclusion: Our novel bonescrew design provides significant improvement in standard tests with syntheticbone material. Additional tests are needed to determine if the bone screwswould be suitable for human trials.

The problems of plasticity and non-linear fracture mechanics have been generally recognized as the most difficult problems of solid mechanics. The present dissertation is devoted to some problems on the intersection of both plasticity and non-linear fracture mechanics. The crack tip is responsible for the crack growth and therefore is the focus of fracture science. The problem of crack has been studied by an army of outstanding scholars and engineers in this century, but has not, as yet, been solved for many important practical situations. The aim of this investigation is to provide an analytical solution to the problem of plasticity at the crack tip for elastic-perfectly plastic materials and to apply the solution to a classical problem of the mechanics of composite materials.^ In this work, the stresses inside the plastic region near the crack tip in a composite material made of two different elastic-perfectly plastic materials are studied. The problems of an interface crack, a crack impinging an interface at the right angle and at arbitrary angles are examined. The constituent materials are assumed to obey the Huber-Mises yielding condition criterion. The theory of slip lines for plane strain is utilized. For the particular homogeneous case these problems have two solutions: the continuous solution found earlier by Prandtl and modified by Hill and Sokolovsky, and the discontinuous solution found later by Cherepanov. The same type of solutions were discovered in the inhomogeneous problems of the present study. Some reasons to prefer the discontinuous solution are provided. The method is also applied to the analysis of a contact problem and a push-in/pull-out problem to determine the critical load for plasticity in these classical problems of the mechanics of composite materials.^ The results of this dissertation published in three journal articles (two of which are under revision) will also be presented in the Invited Lecture at the 7$\rm\sp{th}$ International Conference on Plasticity (Cancun, Mexico, January 1999). ^

In this study, fibre optic sensors (FOS) were used to investigate the interfacial stress-strain behaviour of bonded-in basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP) rods loaded into glulam members. Pull-out tests were conducted to examine the effect of bonded length and load-to-grain direction on the distribution of stress at the BFRP rod/adhesive zone. It was observed that the stress concentration at the loaded end of the BFRP rod of the samples was significantly the highest while the unloaded end showed the lowest. Increasing the bonded length at the same loading configuration resulted in a decrease in stress concentration at the loaded end. The stress concentration at the loaded end of the perpendicular to the grain samples was relatively higher than that of the corresponding parallel to the grain samples.
