° Ciclo do Ensino Básico. ABSTRACT: This study’s aim is to contribute to the understanding of the professional knowledge of the Maths teacher, involved in the development of investigative tasks in the classroom, focusing four guiding questions: (i) how do teachers give practical way to the investigative tasks, having in mind the lesson plans and lesson execution? (ii) Which difficulties do the teachers face when developing the investigative tasks in the classroom? (iii) How does the teachers' didactical knowledge influence the development of the investigative tasks? (iv) How is the teachers' didactical knowledge influenced by the development of the investigative tasks? The theorical framework is based on two broad themes of the study: teacher's professional knowledge (discussing its nature, structure and contents) and the investigative tasks (whose nature and use in the classroom is deepened). Besides, empirical research in what concerns to the professional knowledge of the teacher involved in the development of investigative tasks is also added. The study assumed an interpretative approach, materialised through two case studies, one of a primary school teacher, the other of a preparatory school Maths teacher. The teachers worked in cooperation with the researcher on the investigative tasks, which, until then, they weren't familiar with, planning, teaching and thinking about a set of lessons with tasks of this kind. Data were collected during the work meetings, as well as in the lessons and also in interviews to each one of the teachers. A transversal appreciation of the cases allows us to draw some conclusions. The possibility of integrating the programmatic contents seems to be the main criteria for the selection of the tasks by the teachers. ln the planning, the main priority of the task is the inventory of contents, aiming to reduce the level of uncertainty in what concerns to eventual reactions of the students. ln what concerns to the conduction of the investigative tasks, the introduction phase was the shortest, fulfilling the aim of leading to the understanding of the proposal of the task by the students and also to reinforce some methodological aspects of the investigative work. The task's development phase was the one the preparatory school teacher dedicated more importance, though it was also valued by the primary school teacher. ln this aspect, the teachers consider that their role is to follow and lead the students’ work, helping them to overtake eventual obstacles, keeping the questioning attitude. ln what concerns the discussion phase, the big concern of the teachers is to reassure the understanding of the ideas presented by the students. However, there are two different strategies: while the primary school teacher, who really valued this phase, stimulates the student-student interaction, giving them the responsibility of validating/rejecting the presented conjectures; the preparatory school teacher centers around himself all this phase, assuming the responsibilities of correcting the presented ideas. The development of the investigative tasks is influenced by the didactical knowledge, and it is determinant the knowledge about the students and about the way they learn and the instructional knowledge. The development of the investigative tasks influences several components of the didactical knowledge of the teacher, allowing him/her to reinforce his mathematical knowledge, developing a more complete knowledge about the students and the way they learn. Finally, the lessons execution with investigative tasks provides the teacher with important data about how to plan and conduct open nature tasks, in order to take the biggest advantage of their potential.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of two online forums carried out with the participation of 42 students of the Licenciaturas in Preschool Education, Primary Education and Secondary Education of the University of Costa Rica. The main purpose of the forums was to determine the insights of the participant students about the competencies they have achieved in the field of education research, and which have been the essential tools for them to systematize their own teaching practices. The discussion forums were part of the course FD5091 Métodos de Investigación Educativa [Education Research Methods] of the School of Teacher Education, delivered from March-April 2010. Of the sample, 60 percent were students of the Preschool teaching program, 35 percent were from the Primary Education teaching program and 5 percent were from the Secondary Education teaching program in the fields of Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. According to the insights and beliefs showed by the participants –both, the future teachers and the profession practitioners–, there are no opportunities for research or systematization of their own teaching mediation, in the current work situation.(1) Translator’s Note: In Costa Rica, the “Licenciatura” is a one-year post-Bachelor study program, usually including thesis. “Primary Education” refers to students from the 1st to 6th grades, and “Secondary Education” refers to students from the 7th to 11th grades.

This chapter aims to situate values education as a core component of social science pre-service teacher education. In particular, it reflects on an experiment in embedding a values laden Global Education perspective in a fourth year social science curriculum method unit. This unit was designed and taught by the researcher on the assumption that beginning social science teachers need to be empowered with pedagogical skills and new dispositions to deal with value laden emerging global and regional concerns in their secondary school classrooms. Moreover, it was assumed that when pre-service teachers engage in dynamic and interactive learning experiences in their curriculum unit, they commence the process of ‘capacity building’ those skills which prepare them for their own lifelong professional learning. This approach to values education also aimed at providing pre-service teachers with opportunities to ‘create deep understandings of teaching and learning’ (Barnes, 1989, p. 17) by reflecting on the ways in which ‘pedagogy can be transformative’ (Lovat and Toomey, 2011 add page no from Chapter One). It was assumed that this tertiary experience would foster the sine qua non of teaching – a commitment to students and their learning. Central to fostering new ‘dispositions’ through this approach, was the belief in the power of pedagogy to make the difference in enhancing student participation and learning. In this sense, this experiment in values education in secondary social science pre-service teacher education aligns with the Troika metaphor for a paradigm change, articulated by Lovat and Toomey (2009) in Chapter One.

This study focused on the leadership perceptions of 6 department heads, the conditions for their leadership role and their strategies, and supports for navigating their role. Research participants engaged in 2 sets of semistructured interviews; this resulted in a wealth of richly detailed data. It is clear that department heads do act as teacher leaders, even if they do not use this language to discuss their roles. Five elements of the role of the department head as teacher leader unfolded. The research participants perceived their leadership role to be rooted in teaching. They noted their management and leadership roles. They recognized the importance of support for their work and the support that they provide to others. In addition, they provided an overview of key strategies that they implement to lead in their individualized contexts. Department heads also noted the difficulties associated with their position and the effects that these challenges have on them as individuals. This research has resulted in a number of key recommendations for stakeholders. Department heads themselves need to openly discus's their leadership role with their colleagues and their administrators. In turn, administrators need to develop a deeper understanding of the role along with the potential for balkanization in schools. In addition, unions, school districts, and professional bodies need to develop a system of support for department heads and other teacher leaders. With ongoing meaningful communication and professional development, department heads will be more fully recognized as teacher leaders.

This paper discusses the development of a new Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling) at The University of Queensland, Australia. The middle years of schooling have increasingly been the focus of education reform initiatives in Australia, but this has not been accompanied by significant increases in the number of teacher education institutions offering specialised middle schooling-level teacher preparation programmes. Considering the rapidly changing social and economic context and the emergent state of middle schooling in Australia, the programme represented a conceptual and practical opportunity and challenge for The University of Queensland team. Working collaboratively, the team sought to design a teacher education preservice programme that was both responsive and generative: that is, responsive to local school contexts and to current education research and reform at national and international levels; and generative of cutting-edge theories and practices associated with middle schooling, teachers' work, and teacher education. This paper focuses on one component of the Middle Years of Schooling Teacher Education programme at The University of Queensland; namely, the practicum. We first present the underlying principles of the practicum programme and then examine "dilemmas" that emerged early in the practicum. These issues and tensions were associated with the ideals of "middle years" philosophy and the pragmatics of school reform associated with that approach. Within this context, we explore what it means to be both responsive and generative, and describe how we as teacher educators negotiated the extremes these terms implied.

The purpose of this study was to describe the teaching and leadership experiences of a science teacher who, as head of department, was preparing to introduce changes in the science department of an independent school in response to the requirements of the new junior science syllabus in Queensland, Australia. This teacher consented to classroom observations and interviews with the researchers where his beliefs about teaching practice and change were explored. Other science teachers at the school also were interviewed about their reactions to the planned changes. Interpretive analysis of the data provides an account of the complex interactions, negotiations, compromises, concessions, and trade-offs faced by the teacher during a period of education reform. Perceived barriers existing within the school that impeded proposed change are identified
