The biocompatibility of commercially pure (cp) titanium stems from its chemical stability within an organism, due to a fine film of impermeable titanium oxide covering the metal surface, which guarantees its resistance to corrosion. Despite its biocompatible characteristic, this material does not promote the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer, therefore, many research groups have sought to alter the material`s surface, introducing modifications that might influence corrosion resistance. The electrochemical behavior of cp Ti, with hydroxyapatite coating and without hydroxyapatite coating, commonly used in implant materials, was investigated using an artificial saliva solution at 25 degrees C and pH=7.4. In the conditions of the study it was observed that the hydroxyapatite layer influences the properties of corrosion resistance. This study of the behavior of cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating, in naturally aerated artificial saliva solution at 25 degrees C, was based on open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization curves. At approximately 1x10(-6) A/cm(2) the potential for cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating begins to increase at a faster rate, but at -74mV (SCE) for coated cp Ti and at 180mV (SCE) for uncoated cp Ti the increase in potential begins to slow. This behavior, characterized by a partial stabilization of current density, indicates that in those potential ranges a protective passive film is formed.

The corrosion resistance of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V was investigated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS, potentiodynamic polarisation curves and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The tests were done in Hank solution at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C. The EIS measurements were done at the open circuit potential at specific immersion times. An increase of the resistance as a function of the immersion time was observed, for Ti (at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C), and for Ti-6Al-4V (at 25 degrees C), which was interpreted as the formation and growth of a passive film on the metallic surfaces. The use of ceramic material as refractories in the manufacturing industry is a common practice worldwide. During usage, for example in the production of steel, these materials do experience severe working conditions including high temperatures, low pressures and corrosive environments. This results in lowered service lives and high consumptions of these materials. This, in turn, affects the productivity of the whole steel plant and thereby the cost. In order to investigate how the service life can be improved, studies have been carried out for refractories used in the inner lining of the steel ladles. More specifically, from the slag zone, where the corrosion is most severe. By combining thermodynamic simulations, plant trails and post-mortem studies of the refractories after service, vital information about the behaviour of the slagline refractories during steel refining and the causes of the accelerated wear in this ladle area has been achieved. The results from these studies show that the wear of the slagline refractories of the ladle is initiated at the preheating station, through reduction-oxidation reactions. The degree of the decarburization process is mostly dependent on the preheating fuel or the environment. For refractories without antioxidants, refractory decarburization is slower when coal gas is used in ladle preheating than when a mixture of oil and air is used. In addition, ladle preheating of the refractories without antioxidants leads to direct wear of the slagline refractories. This is due to the total loss of the matrix strength, which results in a sand-like product. Thermal chemical changes that take place in the slagline refractories are due to the MgO-C reaction as well as the formation of liquid phases from impurity oxides. In addition, the decrease in the system pressure during steel refining makes the MgO-C reaction take place at the steel refining temperatures. This reduces the refractory’s resistance to corrosion. This is a serious problem for both the magnesia-carbon and dolomite-carbon refractories. The studies of the reactions between the slagline refractories and the different slag compositions showed that slags rich in iron oxide lead mostly to the oxidation of carbon/graphite in the carbon-containing refractories. This leads to an increased porosity and wettability and therefore an enhanced penetration of slag into the refractory structure. If the slag contains high contents of alumina and or silica (such as the steel refining slag), reactions between the slag components and the dolomite-carbon refractory are promoted. This leads to the formation of low-temperature melting phases such as calcium-aluminates and silicates. The state of these reaction products during steel refining leads to an accelerated wear of the dolomite-carbon refractory. The main products of the reactions between the magnesia-carbon refractory and the steel refining slag are MgAl2O4 spinels, and calcium-aluminates, and silicates. Due to the good refractory properties of MgAl2O4 spinels, the slag corrosion resistance of the magnesiacarbon refractory is promoted.

The effect of the heat treatment on the corrosion behaviour of amorphous Al88Ni6La6 made by melt-spun has been investigated by electrochemical measurements. Heat treatment was carried out at 523 K and 673 K for 4 min and 15 min respectively. The evolution of the crystallization process after annealing was identified by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) as well as X-ray diffraction. The XRD patterns show that the structure of samples heat-treated at higher temperature changes towards a crystal state. The results obtained from the polarization curves reveal that all Al88Ni6La6 alloys exhibit spontaneously passivated behaviour. Furthermore, it is noted that the partially crystallized alloy has the best corrosion resistance in comparison with as-spun amorphous and fully crystallized alloys, while the fully crystallized sample shows deterioration in the corrosion resistance.

This work reports a preliminary exploration of the potential of the ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinate (P6,6,6,14M3PPh) for use as a conversion coating agent for corrosion protection of magnesium alloy AZ31. Results obtained for the as received IL did not indicate any measureable improvement in protection. However, when the IL was allowed to reach equilibrium/saturation with moisture from the atmosphere, treatment with this ‘wet’ solution resulted in a substantial improvement in corrosion resistance. Preliminary electrochemical, optical, and spectroscopic characterization of the film will be presented along with a possible mechanism for film formation.

Magnesium alloy ZE41, used extensively in the aerospace industry, possesses excellent mechanical properties albeit poor corrosion resistance. This paper investigates the mechanism of corrosion and the interaction between the grain boundary intermetallic phases, the Zr-rich regions within the grains and the bulk Mg-rich matrix. The results of optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) potential map measurements have shown the importance of the microstructure in the initiation and propagation of corrosion in an aqueous environment, indicating that the Zr-rich regions play a distinct role in the early stages of corrosion in this alloy.

A complete understanding of how grain refinement, grain size, and processing affect the corrosion resistance of different alloys has not yet been fully developed. Determining a definitive 'grain size-corrosion resistance' relationship, if one exists, is inherently complex as the processing needed to achieve grain refinement also imparts other changes to the microstructure (such as texture, internal stress, and impurity segregation). This work evaluates how variation in grain size and processing impact the corrosion resistance of high purity aluminium. Aluminium samples with a range of grain sizes, from ∼100 μm to ∼2000 μm, were produced using different processing routes, including cold rolling, cryo rolling, equal channel angular pressing, and surface mechanical attrition treatment. Evaluation of all the samples studied revealed a tendency for corrosion rate to decrease as grain size decreases. This suggests that a Hall-Petch type relationship may exist for corrosion rate and grain size. This phenomenon, discussed in the context of grain refinement and processing, reveals several interesting and fundamental relationships.

The effect of rf-power in the range from 100 to 200 W on the electrochemical properties of TiN coatings deposited on 316L stainless steel was investigated by using various electrochemical techniques in a 3.5-wt\% NaCl solution. Surface analyses were also conducted to analyze the coating characteristics. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses confirmed that increasing the rf-power led to a preferred orientation of the TiN(200) microstructure and decreased the surface roughness. The potentiodynamic test results confirmed the passive behavior of all of the specimens with low passive current densities and demonstrated that the effective pitting resistance of the TiN coatings increased with increasing rf-power. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests showed that the TiN films deposited with high rf-power had excellent corrosion resistance during an immersion time of 720 h due to their high total resistance and low porosity.

Corrosion properties of three different Sn-Ag lead free solder alloys have been investigated in 0.3 wt% Na2SO4 solution as corrosive environment. As cast solder alloy was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Volume fractions of the Ag3Sn in the solders were determined by image analysis technique. Pitting potential and corrosion potential for the alloys were determined by potentiodynamic tests. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was carried out to measure the film and charge transfer resistance. Alloys with lower Ag content have been found as better corrosion resistance material.

Three types of methylcyclohexane (MCH) coating were deposited as interlayer dielectrics on copper using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at three different RF plasma power levels. The coating performance was then evaluated by an electrochemical im pedance spectroscopy (EIS) and a potentiodynamic polarization test in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. An atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier transform infrared reflection (FT-IR) spectroscopy were also conducted to analyze the coatings. The MCH coatings showed a lower corrosion rate than the copper substrate in the potentiodynamic tests. The EIS results showed that the corrosion resistance of the coatings increased with an increasing plasma power. Thus, the MCH films with an increasing plasma power improved the corrosion resistance due to the formation of a low-porosity coating, the enhanced formation of C−H, C−C, and C≡C stretching configurations, and the improved smooth surfaces.

The performance of surface finishes as a function of the pH of the utilized plating solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. In addition, the surface finishes were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), and the contact angle of the liquid/solid interface was recorded. NiP films on copper substrates with gold coatings exhibited their highest coating performance at pH 5. This was attributed to the films having the highest protective efficiency and charge transfer resistance, lowest porosity value, and highest contact angle among those examined as a result of the strongly preferred Au(111) orientation and the improved surface wettability.

A novel electrochemically integrated multi-electrode array namely the wire beam electrode(WBE) in combination with noise signatures analysis has been designed to monitor pittingcorrosion of one of the best corrosion resistance ferrous alloys, stainless steel type 316L.From the direct correlation of electrochemical potential noise signatures and galvanic currentdistribution maps during pitting corrosion processes, two characteristic noise patterns wereobserved prior to stable pit formation: (i) the characteristic ‘peak’ of rapid potential transient, towards less negative direction, followed by recovery (termed noise signature I) was found tocorrelate with the disappearance of unstable anode; (ii) the characteristic noise pattern ofquick potential changes towards less negative direction followed by no recovery (termed noisesignature II) was found to correspond with the massive disappearance of minor anodes leadingto formation of highly localized major anodes in the galvanic current distribution maps.
