A strongly textured sheet of magnesium alloy AZ31 has been subjected to tensile testing at temperatures between ambient and 300°C. Structures have been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy and also by atomic force microscopy to quantify surface displacements seen at grain boundaries. Plastic anisotropy varies strongly with test temperature as was observed previously by Agnew and Duygulu. The present findings do not support the view that crystallographic <c + a> becomes a major contributor to deformation at higher temperatures. Rather, the material behaviour reflects an increasing contribution from grain boundary sliding despite the relatively high strain rate (I 0-3 s-1) used in the mechanical tests.

A novel approach to producing improved bio-interfaces by combining continuous wave (CW) and pulsed plasma polymerization (PP) modes is reported. This approach has enabled the generation of stable interfaces with a higher density of primary amine functionality on metal, ceramic and semiconductor surfaces. Heptylamine (HA) was used as the amine-precursor. In this new design, a thin CW PPHA layer is introduced to provide strong cross-linking and attachment to the metal or semiconductor surfaces and to provide a good foundation for better bonding a pulsed PPHA layer with high retention of functional groups. The combined mode provides the pulsed mode advantage of a 3-fold higher density of primary amines, while retaining much of the markedly higher stability in aqueous solutions of the continuous mode.

This study found that first aid competencies of participants assessed three months after standard two-day, classroom-based first aid courses, were similar to those assessed three months after flexible learning courses in which participants undertook home study using a text and on-line theory questionnaire, followed by a day of classroom training.

Aims: Flexible-learning first aid courses are increasingly common due to reduced classroom contact time. This study compared retention of first aid knowledge and basic life support (BLS) skills three months after a two-day, classroom-based first aid course (STD) to one utilizing on-line theory learning at home followed by one day of classroom training (FLEX).
Methods: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, 256 participants with internet access and no first aid related training for at least five years were randomly allocated to a STD or FLEX course. Assessment was conducted immediately after training and again three months later. Each participant was allocated a theory and a BLS score, which were summed and averaged to create an equally-weighted ‘combined score’
of first aid knowledge and skills.
Results: There was no significant difference in theory scores between the STD and FLEX groups immediately after training and after three months. STD participants had significantly higher BLS scores immediately after training (p = 0.001) and three months later (p = 0.046). Males had significantly higher BLS scores after training (p < 0.001), but not three months later (p = 0.02). Participants older than 46 years had significantly lower BLS scores than younger participants (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in combined scores between the STD and FLEX groups or between genders, education or age groups either immediately after training or three months later.
Conclusion: After replacing one day of classroom-based training with on-line theory training, there was no significant difference in the first aid competencies of the study population, as measured by an equallyweighted
combined score of basic life support and first aid theory.

Veteran Indigenous affairs reporter Tony Koch emphasises the importance of respect, trust and listening in his journalism practice. This paper draws on Koch’s insights as well as recent scholarship on the policies and value of listening to support the proposal that Indigenous research ethics provide a concrete framework for improving media representations of Indigenous people and their access to news media. The university ethics process cannot replicate the understanding Koch has gained from 25 years of interacting with Indigenous people and their communities. However, this paper argues it provides a pathway along which journalism academics and their students can learn to engage with Indigenous people, navigate Indigenous public spheres and produce high-quality reporting that reflects Indigenous people’s aspirations. Journalists within the academy, who are not subject to the commercial or organizational pressures of the news industry, are especially well placed to collaborate with Indigenous people to deliver new ways of conducting research and telling stories that privilege their perspectives. Koch’s newsgathering practice demonstrates that many principals of this progressive approach are also achievable in mainstream journalism.

Commuting to work is one of the most important and regular routines of transportation in towns and cities. From a geographic perspective, the length of people’s commute is influenced, to some degree, by the spatial separation of their home and workplace and the transport infrastructure. The rise of car ownership in Australia from the 1950s to the present was accompanied by a considerable decrease of public transport use. Currently there is an average of 1.4 persons per car in Australia, and private cars are involved in approximately 90% of the trips, and public transportation in only 10%. Increased personal mobility has fuelled the trend of decentralised housing development, mostly without a clear planning for local employment, or alternative means of transportation. Transport sector accounts for 14% of Australia’s net greenhouse gas emissions. Without further policy action, Australia’s emissions are projected to continue to increase. The Australian Federal Government and the new Department of Climate Change have recently published a set of maps showing that rising seas would submerge large parts of Victoria coastal region. Such event would lead to major disruption in planned urban growth areas in the next 50 years with broad scale inundation of dwellings, facilities and road networks. The Greater Geelong Region has well established infrastructure as a major urban centre and tourist destination and hence attracted the attention of federal and state governments in their quest for further development and population growth. As a result of its natural beauty and ecological sensitivity, scenarios for growth in the region are currently under scrutiny from local government as well as development agencies, scientists, and planners. This paper is part of a broad research in the relationship between transportation system, urban form, trip demand, and emissions, as a paramount in addressing the challenges presented by urban growth. Progressing from previous work focused on private cars, this present paper investigates the use of public transport as a mode for commuting in the Greater Geelong Region. Using a GIS based interaction model, it characterises the current use of the existing public transportation system, and also builds a scenario of increased use of the existing public transportation system, estimating potencial reductions in CO2 emissions. This study provides an improved understanding of the extent to which choices of transport mode and travel activity patterns, affect emissions in the context of regional networks. The results indicate that emissions from commuting by public transportation are significantly lower than those from commuting by private car, and emphasise that there are opportunities for large abatment in the greenhouse emissions from the transportation sector related to efforts in increasing the use of existing public transportation system.

This paper addresses the limitation of current multilinear techniques (multilinear PCA, multilinear ICA) when applied to face recognition for handling faces in unseen illumination and viewpoints. We propose a new recognition method, exploiting the interaction of all the subspaces resulting from multilinear decomposition (for both multilinear PCA and ICA), to produce a new basis called multilinear-eigenmodes. This basis offers the flexibility to handle face images at unseen illumination or viewpoints. Experiments on benchmarked datasets yield superior performance in terms of both accuracy and computational cost.

In this paper we consider face recognition from sets of face images and, in particular, recognition invariance to illumination. The main contribution is an algorithm based on the novel concept of maximally probable mutual modes (MMPM). Specifically: (i) we discuss and derive a local manifold illumination invariant and (ii) show how the invariant naturally leads to a formulation of "common modes" of two face appearance distributions. Recognition is then performed by finding the most probable mode, which is shown to be an eigenvalue problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated empirically on a challenging database containing the total of 700 video sequences of 100 individuals
