Summary of resolutions recently adopted by CDCC and resolutions of ECLAC and other organs of the United Nations which might be of special interest to member countries of ECLAC/CDCC

This paper brings to the attention of member countries of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC) resolutions adopted by past sessions of the Committee, since 2000, and the process of their implementation. Resolutions 55 to 66 for the period 2000- 2006 have been extracted from the reports of the eighteenth to twenty first sessions of the CDCC Also included for the information of member countries are selected resolutions recently adopted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and other organs of the United Nations. These resolutions greatly influence the preparation of the programme of work and are expected guide the day-to-day functioning of the secretariat. It is a great source of information for delegations, given the perceived special relevance of the resolutions to the membership of the CDCC. The resolutions listed in this document are pertinent to all subprogrammes of ECLAC and indeed the CDCC subprogramme 12 of ECLAC. However, the content of these resolutions either marked no real advance on the outcomes of the corresponding conferences that were held within recent times or were cast in a globally relevant context that did not address specific concerns of Caribbean countries to any significant extent.

Two Dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives and other chemical constituents from Aristolochia peltato-deltoidea

Do extrato hexânico das partes aéreas de Aristolochia peltato-deltoidea Hoehne (Aristolochiaceae) foram isolados duas novas lignanas epiméricas do tipo dibenzilbutirolactol, rel-(8R, 8 S, 9S)-3,4-dimetoxi-3 ,4 -metilenodioxi-9b-etoxi- e rel-(8R, 8 S, 9R)-3,4-dimetoxi-3 ,4 -metilenodioxi-9a-etoxi-lignanas-8.8 ,9.O.9 , além da neolignana benzofurânica eupomatenóide-7, a-tocoferilquinona, b-sitosterol e estigmasterol. Do extrato clorofórmico foram isoladas duas lignanas dibenzilbutirolactonas diasteroisoméricas: rel-(8R, 8 R)- e rel-(8R, 8 S)-3,4-dimetoxi-3 ,4 -metilenodioxi-9-oxo-lignanas-8.8 ,9.O.9 . A composição química das frações apolares do extrato hexânico também foi analisada por CG/EM. Dentre os componentes detectados, dez foram identificados. As estruturas dos compostos isolados foram elucidadas utilizando-se métodos espectrométricos.

Studies of micronuclei and other nuclear abnormalities in red blood cells of Colossoma macropomum exposed to methylmercury

The frequencies of micronuclei (MN) and morphological nuclear abnormalities (NA) in erythrocytes in the peripheral blood of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), treated with 2 mg.L^-1 methylmercury (MeHg), were analyzed. Two groups (nine specimens in each) were exposed to MeHg for different periods (group A - 24 h; group B - 120 h). A third group served as negative control (group C, untreated; n = 9). Although, when compared to the control group there were no significant differences in MN frequency in the treated groups, for NA, the differences between the frequencies of group B (treated for 120 h) and the control group were extremely significant (p < 0.02), thus demonstrating the potentially adverse effects of MeHg on C. macropomum erythrocytes after prolonged exposure.
