Longevity and Persistence of Triploid Grass Carp Stocked into the Santee Cooper Reservoirs of South Carolina

This study evaluated longevity and population persistence of 768,500 triploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Valenciennes) stocked in the 70,000-ha Santee Cooper system in South Carolina from 1989 through 1996 to control hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle).

Nonlinear Dynamic Response of Tension Leg Platform

Tension Leg Platform (TLP) is a typical compliant offshore structure for oil exploitation in deep water. Most of the existing mathematical models for analyzing the dynamic response of TLP are based on explicit or implicit assumptions that displacements (translations and rotations) are small magnitude. Herein a theoretical method for analyzing the nonlinear dynamic behavior of TLP with finite displacement is developed, in which multifold nonlinearities are taken into account, i.e. finite displacement, coupling of the six degrees of freedom, instantaneous position, instantaneous wet surface, free surface effects and viscous drag force. Using this theoretical model, we perform the numerical analysis of dynamic response of a representative TLP. The comparison between the degenerative linear solution of the proposed nonlinear model and the published one shows good agreements. Furthermore, numerical results are presented which illustrate that nonlinearities exert a distinct influence on the dynamic responses of the TLP.

A Finite Element Analysis of a Crack Penetrating or Deflecting into an Interface in a Thin Laminate

The crack tip driving force of a crack growing from a pre-crack that is perpendicular to and terminating at an interface between two materials is investigated using a linear fracture mechanics theory. The analysis is performed both for a crack penetrating the interface, growing straight ahead, and for a crack deflecting into the interface. The results from finite element calculations are compared with asymptotic solutions for infinitesimally small crack extensions. The solution is found to be accurate even for fairly large amounts of crack growth. Further, by comparing the crack tip driving force of the deflected crack with that of the penetrating crack, it is shown how to control the path of the crack by choosing the adhesion of the interface relative to the material toughness.

A Comparison of Two Methods for Enhancing the Recovery of Seagrasses into Propellor Scars: Mechanical Injection of a Nutrient and Growth Hormone Solution vs. Defecation by Roosting Seabirds: Final Report.

Based on the recovery rates for Thalassia testudinum measured in this study for scars of these excavation depths and assuming a linear recovery horizon, we estimate that it would take ~ 6.9 years (95% CI. = 5.4 to 9.6 years) for T. testudinum to return to the same density as recorded for the adjacent undisturbed population. The application of water soluble fertilizers and plant growth hormones by mechanical injection into the sediments adjacent to ten propellor scars at Lignumvitae State Botanical Site did not significantly increase the recovery rate of Thalassia testudinum or Halodule wrightii. An alternative method of fertilization and restoration of propellor scars was also tested by a using a method of “compressed succession” where Halodule wrightii is substituted for T. testudinum in the initial stages of restoration. Bird roosting stakes were placed among H.wrightii bare root plantings in prop scars to facilitate the defecation of nitrogen and phosphorus enriched feces. In contrast to the fertilizer injection method, the bird stakes produced extremely high recovery rates of transplanted H. wrightii. We conclude that use of a fertilizer/hormone injection machine in the manner described here is not a feasible means of enhancing T. testudinum recovery in propellor scars on soft bottom carbonate sediments. Existing techniques such as the bird stake approach provide a reliable, and inexpensive alternative method that should be considered for application to restoration of seagrasses in these environments. Diez años de investigación sobre teatro traducido en España: el proyecto TRACE y los archivos de censura

[EN] This contribution offers a brief overview of research undertaken for the last few years under the TRACE (translation and censorship, or censored translations) project with respect to theatre. The AGA (General Administration Archive in Alcala de Henares, Madrid), a unique source for information for translation scholars, has become the focus of TRACE-theatre investigations on Francoist Spain in the last few years. In Spain, these censorship archives have proved to be an essential source of information, and a rich reservoir of data that, when explored in depth, help draw a history of Spanish theatre in translation. Contrary to what one may think at first, the purpose of using censorship archives in TRACE is not only to check what got censored (banned, crossed out or modified) but rather to trace back all written evidence left by plays that underwent the bureaucratic censoring process which was applied to all cultural manifestations, national or foreign, theatrical as well as non-dramatic. And it is precisely when tracing back censorship records that one finds a way to uncover a history of Spanish theatre in translation that is yet to be written but can now be outlined.

Crossing the Threshold, one of a series of advice and guidance publications, is designed to support use of the online e-Portfolio Implementation Toolkit and video case studies by those involved in wide-scale implementation of e-portfolios in their institutions. As the resources address the needs of both managers and practitioners, the publication has relevance for a wide range of readers in further and higher education and work-based learning. To assist the planning and effective management of a large-scale e-portfolio implementation, Crossing the Threshold follows the stages of an implementation journey with insights and guidance drawn from the toolkit and its supporting case studies.
