Shane Meadows’ country: analysis of the film this is England (2006)

This Is England is social realist film portraying racism and poverty in 1980s Britain through the eyes of Shaun, a 12 year old boy, who has lost his father in the Falklands war and as to come to terms with his own identity, the difficult transition from childhood to adolescence and the need to fit in a determined group/tribe/gang. The following article aims at analysing relevant aspects depicted from the film emphasizing the so much debated reality of life during 80s. In This is England Shane Meadows manages to rediscover his own self geography, by revisiting his adolescent years. It is a biographical film about the importance of peer pressure and the results of an excess of nationalism, at the same time it typifies some issues related to the 80s youth culture.

Diane Arbus: the wonderful wizard of odds or the poetics of the i (eye)

Diane Arbus‘ photographs are mainly about difference. Most of the time she is trying ‗[…] to suppress, or at least reduce, moral and sensory queasiness‘ (Sontag 1977: 40) in order to represent a world where the subject of the photograph is not merely the ‗other‘ but also the I. Her technique does not coax her subjects into natural poses. Instead she encourages them to be strange and awkward. By posing for her, the revelation of the self is identified with what is odd. This paper aims at understanding the geography of difference that, at the same time, is also of resistance, since Diane Arbus reveals what was forcefully hidden by bringing it into light in such a way that it is impossible to ignore. Her photographs display a poetic beauty that is not only of the ‗I‘ but also of the ‗eye‘. The world that is depicted is one in which we are all the same. She ―atomizes‖ reality by separating each element and ‗Instead of showing identity between things which are different […] everybody is shown to look the same.‘ (Sontag 1977: 47). Furthermore, this paper analyses some of Arbus‘ photographs so as to explain this point of view, by trying to argue that between rejecting and reacting against what is standardized she does not forget the geography of the body which is also a geography of the self. While creating a new imagetic topos, where what is trivial becomes divine, she also presents the frailty of others as our own.

East of Suez and the imaginary tangles of space and self

Drawing on postcolonial studies and the theorization on imperial gothic, this paper centres on three texts: The Hosts of the Lord (1900) by Flora Annie Steel; East of Suez (1901) by Alice Perrin, and The Way of an Eagle (1912)by Ethel Dell. These three texts highlight in different ways the discursive mediation of the Other and its destabilizing effects on the identity of the European-minded colonizer, thus foregrounding the multifarious nature of the British imaginative engagement with India. In this context, it is particularly relevant to examine the political and ideological implications of representing anywhere East of Suez as a locus of primitivism and chaos vis-à-vis the colonizer’s ambivalent reactions. Thus we seek to demonstrate the power of two distinct practices or modes of representation – namely, the power of a metaphorical discourse versus metonymic discourse- within the proces of constructing the East for a vast Western readership.

Eu e eles: a construção da identidade em alunos do ensino básico

Partilhando a ideia que a identidade individual é um conceito que expressa caraterísticas singulares que se constroem e desenvolvem na acção de relacionamento com os outros, o domínio da identidade cruza-se com o da aprendizagem. Este estudo faz parte de um projeto investigação, cujo objetivo principal é compreender a relação entre a natureza do feedback do professor, a identidade do aluno e o comprometimento do aluno na escola. A finalidade deste trabalho foi a construção de um questionário. Pretendia-se compreender como os alunos do Ensino Básico vão construindo a sua identidade de aluno, partindo das questões: a) Como me vejo enquanto aluno?; b) Como os meus colegas me veem enquanto aluno?; c) Como os professores me vêem enquanto aluno? Alunos do 6º e 9º ano de escolaridade, entre os 10 e os 19 anos de idade, num total de 44, responderam a um questionário em formato de resposta aberta. Uma análise preliminar indica que os alunos têm imagens positivas e negativas de si mesmos enquanto alunos, verificando-se semelhanças entre as imagens que os alunos referem de si e as que consideram que os colegas e os professores têm deles enquanto alunos. Os alunos de 6º ano descrevem-se com um maior número de imagens, tanto positivas como negativas. Contudo, as imagens destes alunos são semelhantes às descritas pelos alunos de 9º ano. Estes resultados sugerem-nos que as imagens que os alunos vão construindo acerca das suas posições são estáveis.
