The development of a reflective, gold-coated long-period grating-based sensor for the measurement of chloride ions in solution is discussed. The sensor scheme is based around a long-period fiber grating (LPG)-based Michelson interferometer where the sensor was calibrated and evaluated in the laboratory using sodium chloride solutions, over a wide range of concentrations, from 0.01 to 4.00 M. The grating response creates shifts in the spectral characteristic of the interferometer, formed using the LPG and a reflective surface on the distal end of the fiber, due to the change of refracting index of the solution surrounding it. It was found that the sensitivity of the device could be enhanced over that obtained from a bare fiber by coating the LPG-based interferometer with gold nanoparticles and the results of a cross-comparison of performance were obtained and details discussed. The approach will be explored as a basis to create a portable, low-power device, developed with the potential for installation in concrete structures to determine the ingress of chloride ions, operating through monitoring the refractive index change.

We review the design and fabrication of thin-film composite optical waveguides (OWG) with high refractive index for sensor applications. A highly sensitive optical sensor device has been developed on the basis of thin-film, composite OWG. The thin-film OWG was deposited onto the surface of a potassium-ion-exchanged (K+) glass OWG by sputtering or spin coating (5-9 mm wide, and with tapers at both ends). By allowing an adiabatic transition of the guided light from the secondary OWG to the thin-film OWG, the electric field of the evanescent wave at the thin film was enhanced. The attenuation of the guided light in the thin film layer was small, and the guided light intensity changed sensitively with the refractive index of the cladding layer. Our experimental results demonstrate that thin-film, composite OWG gas sensors or immunosensors are much more sensitive than sensors based on other technologies. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Effects of inappropriate installation can bias the measurements of flowmeters. For vortex flowmeters, a method is proposed to detect inappropriate installation of the flowmeter from the oscillatory signal of the vortex sensor. The method is based on assuming the process of vortex generation to be a generic, noisy, nonlinear oscillation, describable by a noisy Stuart-Landau equation, with a corresponding sensor signal that also contains higher harmonic excitations. By making use of the scaling properties of the Navier-Stokes Equation, the method was designed to be robust with respect to uncertainties in the fluid properties. The diagnostic functionality is demonstrated on measurement data. In the experiments, installation effects that lead to more than 0.5% error in the output of the flowmeter could clearly be detected. The 5' cap structures of higher eukaryote mRNAs have ribose 2'-O-methylation. Likewise, many viruses that replicate in the cytoplasm of eukaryotes have evolved 2'-O-methyltransferases to autonomously modify their mRNAs. However, a defined biological role for 2'-O-methylation of mRNA remains elusive. Here we show that 2'-O-methylation of viral mRNA was critically involved in subverting the induction of type I interferon. We demonstrate that human and mouse coronavirus mutants lacking 2'-O-methyltransferase activity induced higher expression of type I interferon and were highly sensitive to type I interferon. Notably, the induction of type I interferon by viruses deficient in 2'-O-methyltransferase was dependent on the cytoplasmic RNA sensor Mda5. This link between Mda5-mediated sensing of viral RNA and 2'-O-methylation of mRNA suggests that RNA modifications such as 2'-O-methylation provide a molecular signature for the discrimination of self and non-self mRNA.

A detailed investigation on planar two dimensional metallodielectric dipole arrays with enhanced near-fields for sensing applications was carried out. Two approaches for enhancing the near-fields and increasing the quality factor were studied. The reactive power stored in the vicinity of the array at resonance increases rapidly with increasing periodicity. Higher quality factors are produced as a result. The excitation of the odd mode in the presence of a perturbation gives rise to a sharp resonance with near-field enhanced by at least an order of magnitude compared to unperturbed arrays. The trade-off between near-field enhancement and thermal losses was also studied, and the effect of supporting dielectric layers on thermal losses and quality factors were examined. Secondary transmissions due to the dielectric alone were found to enhance and reduce cyclically the quality factor as a function of the thickness of the dielectric material. The performance of a perturbed frequency selective surface in sensing nearby materials was investigated. Finally, unperturbed and perturbed arrays working at infrared frequencies were demonstrated experimentally. (C) 2011 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). [DOI: 10.1117/1.3604785]
