[EN] Progress in methodology in specific fields is usually very closely linked to the technological progress in other areas of knowledge. This justifies the fact that lexicographical techniques have had to wait for the arrival of the IT era of the last decades of the 20th century in order to be able to create specialised electronic dictionaries which can house and systemise enormous amounts of information which can later be dealt with quickly and efficiently. This study proposes a practical-methodological model which aims to solve the grammatical treatment of adverbs in Ancient Latin. We have suggested a list of 5 types, in a decreasing order from a greater to lesser degree of specialisation; technical (T), semi-technical (S-T), instrumental-valued (I-V), instrumental- descriptive (I-D), instrumental-expository (I-E).

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is an important noninvasive tool used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the neurologic evaluation of the sick newborn infant. It provides an excellent assessment of at-risk newborns and formulates a prognosis for long-term neurologic outcome. The automated analysis of neonatal EEG data in the NICU can provide valuable information to the clinician facilitating medical intervention. The aim of this thesis is to develop a system for automatic classification of neonatal EEG which can be mainly divided into two parts: (1) classification of neonatal EEG seizure from nonseizure, and (2) classifying neonatal background EEG into several grades based on the severity of the injury using atomic decomposition. Atomic decomposition techniques use redundant time-frequency dictionaries for sparse signal representations or approximations. The first novel contribution of this thesis is the development of a novel time-frequency dictionary coherent with the neonatal EEG seizure states. This dictionary was able to track the time-varying nature of the EEG signal. It was shown that by using atomic decomposition and the proposed novel dictionary, the neonatal EEG transition from nonseizure to seizure states could be detected efficiently. The second novel contribution of this thesis is the development of a neonatal seizure detection algorithm using several time-frequency features from the proposed novel dictionary. It was shown that the time-frequency features obtained from the atoms in the novel dictionary improved the seizure detection accuracy when compared to that obtained from the raw EEG signal. With the assistance of a supervised multiclass SVM classifier and several timefrequency features, several methods to automatically grade EEG were explored. In summary, the novel techniques proposed in this thesis contribute to the application of advanced signal processing techniques for automatic assessment of neonatal EEG recordings.

The cliché is a peripheral term in our critical vocabulary. Reviewers, critics, and editors speak of clichés, but dictionaries of critical terms rarely provide entries on the word. This paper asks whether pointing out clichés represents a form of critique or whether it is just quibbling, and how we draw the line between scrutiny and pedantry.

Contemporary prison practice faces many challenges, is developing rapidly and is become increasingly professionalized, influenced by the new National Offender Management Service. As well as bringing an increased emphasis on skills and qualifications it has also introduced a new set of ideas and concepts into the established prisons and penal lexicon. At the same time courses on prisons and penology remain important components of criminology and criminal justice degree courses. This will be the essential source of reference for the increasing number of people studying in, working in prisons and working with prisoners. This Dictionary is part a new series of Dictionaries covering key aspects of criminal justice and the criminal justice system and designed to meet the needs of both students and practitioners. This title includes key features such as: approximately 300 entries (of between 500 and 1500 words) on key terms and concepts arranged alphabetically; designed to meet the needs of both students and practitioners; and, entries which include summary definition, main text and key texts and sources. It takes full account of emerging occupational and Skills for Justice criteria. It is edited by a leading academic and practitioner in the prisons and penology field. It includes entries contributed by leading academic and practitioners in prisons and penology.

ANPO (A Non-predefined Outcome) is an an art-making methodology that employs structuralist theory of language (Saussure, Lacan, Foucault) combined with Hegel’s dialectic and the theory of creation of space by Lefebvre to generate spaces of dialogue and conversation between community members and different stakeholders. These theories of language are used to find artistic ways of representing a topic that community members have previously chosen. The topic is approached in a way that allows a visual, aural, performative and gustative form. To achieve this, the methodology is split in four main steps: step 1 ‘This is not a chair’, Step 2 ‘The topic’, Step 3 ‘ Vis-á-vis-á-vis’ and step 4. ‘Dialectical representation’ where the defined topic is used to generate artistic representations. The step 1 is a warm up exercise informed by the Rene Magritte painting ‘This is not a Pipe’. This exercise aims to help the participants to see an object as something else than an object but as a consequence of social implications. Step 2, participants choose a random topic and vote for it. The artist/facilitator does not predetermine the topic, participants are the one who propose it and choose it. Step 3, will be analysed in this publication and finally step 4, the broken down topic is taken to be represented and analysed in different ways.

A practical machine-vision-based system is developed for fast detection of defects occurring on the surface of bottle caps. This system can be used to extract the circular region as the region of interests (ROI) from the surface of a bottle cap, and then use the circular region projection histogram (CRPH) as the matching features. We establish two dictionaries for the template and possible defect, respectively. Due to the requirements of high-speed production as well as detecting quality, a fast algorithm based on a sparse representation is proposed to speed up the searching. In the sparse representation, non-zero elements in the sparse factors indicate the defect's size and position. Experimental results in industrial trials show that the proposed method outperforms the orientation code method (OCM) and is able to produce promising results for detecting defects on the surface of bottle caps.
