The thesis primarily reports the synthesis, characterization and application of novel mixed mode stationary phases for Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography (HILIC). HILIC is a rapidly emerging chromatographic mode that is finding great applicability in the analysis of polar organic molecules. In addition, there is a chapter on the analysis of Bisphenol A and related species using capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with boron-doped diamond electrodes for electrochemical detection. The synthesis and characterization of the novel mixed mode stationary phases prepared in this work is an important contribution to the field as the materials prepared exhibited better performance than similar materials obtained commercially. In addition a more thorough characterization of the materials (e.g.,thermogravimetric analysis, various NMR modes, elemental analysis, etc.) and resulting columns (e.g., H) than is typically encountered. The application of these new materials to the analysis of sugars using evaporative light scattering is also novel. In CE studies, electrochemical detection is sufficiently rare that the work is also novel.

Ga and In co-doped ZnO (GIZO) thin films together with ZnO, In-doped ZnO (IZO), Ga-doped ZnO (GZO), and IZO/GZO multilayer for comparison, were grown on corning glass and boron doped Si substrates by PLD. The photoluminescence spectra of GIZO showed a strong white light emission and the current-voltage characteristics showed relatively lower turn-on voltage and larger forward current. The CIE coordinates for GIZO were observed to be (0.31, 0.33) with a correlated colour temperature of 6650 K, indicating a cool white light, and establishing a possibility of white light emitting diodes. The in-situ p-type doping of 4H-SiC grown on off-oriented (0001) 4H-SiC substrates was performed with trimethylaluminum (TMA) and/or diborane (B2H6) as the dopants. The incorporations of Al and B atoms and their memory effects and the electrical properties of p-type 4H-SiC epilayers were characterized by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and Hall effect measurements, respectively. Both Al- and B-doped 4H-SiC epilayers were p-type conduction. It was shown that the profiles of the incorporated boron and aluminum concentration were in agreement with the designed TMA and B2H6 flow rate diagrams. The maximum hole concentration for the Al doped 4H-SiC was 3.52x10(20) cm(-3) with Hall mobility of about 1 cm(2)/Vs and resistivity of 1.6 similar to 2.2x10(-2) Omega cm. The heavily boron-doped 4H-SiC samples were also obtained with B2H6 gas flow rate of 5 sccm, yielding values of 0.328 Omega cm for resistivity, 5.3x10(18) cm(-3) for hole carrier concentration, and 7 cm(2)/VS for hole mobility. The doping efficiency of Al in SiC is larger than that of B. The memory effects of Al and B were investigated in undoped 4H-SiC by using SIMS measurement after a few run of doped 4H-SiC growth. It was clearly shown that the memory effect of Al is stronger than that of B. It is suggested that p-type 4H-SiC growth should be carried out in a separate reactor, especially for Al doping, in order to avoid the join contamination on the subsequent n-type growth. 4H-SiC PiN diodes were fabricated by using heavily B doped epilayers. Preliminary results of PiN diodes with blocking voltage of 300 V and forward voltage drop of 3.0 V were obtained.

It is well known that the value of room-temperature conductivity sigma(RT) of boron-doped silicon films is one order lower than that of phosphorus-doped silicon films, when they are deposited in an identical plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition system. We use surface acoustic wave and secondary-ion mass spectrometry techniques to measure the concentration of total and electrically active boron atoms. It is shown that only 0.7% of the total amount of incorporated boron is electrically active. This is evidence that hydrogen atoms can passivate substitutional B-Si bonds by forming the neutral B-H-Si complex. By irradiating the boron-doped samples with a low-energy electron beam, the neutral B-H-Si complex converts into electrically active B-Si bonds and the conductivity can be increased by about one order of magnitude, up to the same level as that of phosphorus-doped samples.

We report on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of nitrogen doped diamond that has been N-15 enriched, electron irradiated and annealed. EPR spectra from two new nitrogen containing S = 1/2 defects are detected and labelled WAR9 and WAR10. We show that the properties of these defects are consistent with them being the < 001 >-nitrogen split interstitial and the < 001 >-nitrogen split interstitial-< 001 >-carbon split interstitial pair, respectively. We also provide an explanation for why these defects have previously eluded discovery.

Nitrogen is one of the most common impurities in diamond. On a substitutional site it acts as a deep donor, approximately 1.7 eV below the conduction band. Irradiation of nitrogen containing diamond and subsequent annealing creates the nitrogen vacancy centre, which has recently attracted much attention for quantum information processing application. Another possible product of irradiation and annealing of nitrogen containing diamond is interstitial nitrogen. Presumably, a mobile carbon interstitial migrates to a substitutional nitrogen to produce an interstitial nitrogen complex which may or may not be mobile. The configuration(s) of interstitial nitrogen related defects (e.g. bond centred, [001]-split) are not known. An infra-red (IR) absorption peak at 1450 cm-1 labelled H1a has been associated with an nitrogen interstitial complex. [1] Theoretical modelling suggested that this IR local mode is due to a bond centred nitrogen interstitial [2]. However, more recent modelling [3] suggests that this defect is mobile at temperatures were H1a is stable and instead assign H1a to two nitrogen atoms occupying a single lattice site in a [001]-split configuration. To date no electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra have been conclusively associated with an interstitial nitrogen defect.
In this study we present data from new EPR and optical absorption studies in combination with uniaxial stress of nitrogen interstitial related defects in electron irradiated and annealed nitrogen doped diamond. These measurements yield symmetry information about the defects allowing us to determine which of the proposed models are possible. EPR spectra of nitrogen interstitial related defects in samples isotopically enriched with 15N are reported and we show that these explain the lack of previous EPR data for these defects. Correlations between the IR absorbance and the integrated intensity of the new EPR defects are studied for varying irradiation doses and annealing temperatures.

The surface properties of boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond films treated with H(2) plasma was investigated in regard to their electrochemical response for phenol oxidation. The surface of these films is relatively flat formed by crystallites with sizes of about 40 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses showed that electrode surface has a high amount of C-H bonds. This behavior is in agreement with Mott-Schottky plot measurements concerning the flat band potential that presented a value as expected for hydrogenated diamond surface. This electrode presented the phenol detection limit of 0.08 mg L(-1) for low phenol concentrations from 40 to 250 mu mol L(-1).

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films with different indium compositions were grown on p-type boron doped Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effect of indium concentration on the structural, optical and electrical properties of the film was studied. XRD, XPS and Raman studies confirm the single phase formation and successful doping of In in to ZnO. We observed various photoluminescence emissions, ranging from UV to visible, with the incorporation of In into ZnO. Room temperature Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics showed good p-n junction properties for n-type-undoped and In doped ZnO with p-type substrates. The turn on voltage was observed to be decreasing with increase in In composition.

Single-walled nanohorns (SWNHs) have been prepared by sub-merged arc discharge of graphite electrodes in liquid nitrogen. The samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Nitrogen and boron doped SWNHs have been prepared by the sub-merged arc discharge method using melamine and elemental boron as precursors. Intensification of Raman D-band and stiffening of G-band has been observed in the doped samples. The electrical resistance of the SWNHs varies in opposite directions with nitrogen and boron doping. Functionalization of SWNHs through amidation has been carried out for solubilizing them in non-polar solvents. Water-soluble SWNHs have been produced by acid treatment and non-covalent functionalization with a coronene salt. SWNHs have been decorated with nanoparticles of Au, Ag and Pt. Interaction of electron donor (tetrathiafulvalene, TTF) and acceptor molecules (tetracyanoethylene, TCNE) with SWNHs has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Progressive softening and stiffening of Raman G-band has been observed respectively with increase in the concentration of TTF and TCNE.

Ammonia (NH 3) plasma pretreatment is used to form and temporarily reduce the mobility of Ni, Co, or Fe nanoparticles on boron-doped mono- and poly-crystalline silicon. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy proves that NH 3 plasma nitrides the Si supports during nanoparticle formation which prevents excessive nanoparticle sintering/diffusion into the bulk of Si during carbon nanotube growth by chemical vapour deposition. The nitridation of Si thus leads to nanotube vertical alignment and the growth of nanotube forests by root growth mechanism. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Phosphorous-doped and boron-doped amorphous Si thin films as well as amorphous SiO2/Si/SiO2 sandwiched structures were prepared in a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. Then, the p-i-n structures containing nano-crystalline Si/SiO2 sandwiched structures as the intrinsic layer were prepared in situ followed by thermal annealing. Electroluminescence spectra were measured at room temperature under forward bias, and it is found that the electroluminescence intensity is strongly influenced by the types of substrate. The turn-on voltages can be reduced to 3 V for samples prepared on heavily doped p-type Si (p(+)-Si) substrates and the corresponding electroluminescence intensity is more than two orders of magnitude stronger than that on lightly doped p-type Si (p-Si) and ITO glass substrates. The improvements of light emission can be ascribed to enhanced hole injection and the consequent recombination of electron-hole pairs in the luminescent nanocrystalline Si/SiO2 system. The successful application of boron-doped hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon as window layer in a-Si: H nip solar cells on stainless steel foil with a thickness of 0.05 mm is reported. Open circuit voltage and fill factor of the fabricated solar cell were 0.90V and 0.70 respectively. The optical and structural properties of the p-layers have been investigated by using UV-VIS and Raman spectroscopy. It is confirmed that the p-layer is hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon with a wide optical gap due to quantum size effect.

Hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) layers of boron-doped increasing step by step was deposited on n-type crystalline silicon substrate using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) system. After evaporating Ohm contact electrode on the side of substrate and on the side of nc-Si:H film, a structure of electrode/ (p)nc-Si:H/(n)c-Si/electrode was obtained. It is confirmed by electrical measurement such as I-V curve, C-V curve and DLTS that this is a variable capacitance diode. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The heteroepitaxial growth of n-type and p-type 3C-SiC on (0001) sapphire substrates has been performed with a supply of SiH4+C2H4+H-2 system by introducing ammonia (NH3) and diborane (B2H6) precursors, respectively, into gas mixtures. Intentionally incorporated nitrogen impurity levels were affected by changing the Si/C ratio within the growth reactor. As an acceptor, boron can be added uniformly into the growing 3C-SiC epilayers. Nitrogen-doped 3C-SiC epilayers were n-type conduction, and boron-doped epilayers were p-type and probably heavily compensated.
