Nomenclature and syntaxonomic notes on some high-rank syntaxa of the European grassland vegetation

We present descriptions of a new order (Ranunculo cortusifolii-Geranietalia reuteri and of a new alliance (Stachyo lusitanicae-Cheirolophion sempervirentis) for the herbaceous fringe communities of Macaronesia and of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula, respectively. A new alliance, the Polygalo mediterraneae-Bromion erecti (mesophilous post-cultural grasslands), was introduced for the Peninsular Italy. We further validate and typify the Armerietalia rumelicae (perennial grasslands supported by nutrient-poor on siliceous bedrocks at altitudes characterized by the submediterranean climate of central-southern Balkan Peninsula), the Securigero-Dasypyrion villosae (lawn and fallow-land tall-grass annual vegetation of Italy), and the Cirsio vallis-demoni-Nardion (acidophilous grasslands on siliceous substrates of the Southern Italy). Nomenclatural issues (validity, legitimacy, synonymy, formal corrections) have been discussed and clarified for the following names: Brachypodio-Brometalia, Bromo pannonici-Festucion csikhegyensis, Corynephoro-Plantaginion radicatae, Heleochloion, Hieracio-Plantaginion radicatae, Nardetea strictae, Nardetalia strictae, Nardo-Callunetea, Nardo-Galion saxatilis, Oligo-Bromion, Paspalo-Heleochloetalia, Plantagini-Corynephorion and Scorzoneret alia villosae. 

Validations and descriptions of European syntaxa of vegetation dominated by lichens, bryophytes and algae

Fourty-two high-rank syntaxa and seven associations of the thallophyte system of syntaxa are either described as new or validated in this paper. Among those, there are the following nine classes: Aspicilietea candidae, Caulerpetea racemosae, Desmococcetea olivacei, Entophysalidetea deustae, Gloeocapsetea sanguineae, Mesotaenietea berggrenii, Naviculetea gregariae, Porpidietea zeoroidis, Roccelletea phycopsis. Eleven orders and ten alliances as well as three associations are described or validated: the Aspicilietalia verruculosae (incl. Aspicilion mashiginensis and Teloschistion contortuplicati), the Caulerpetalia racemosae (incl. Caulerpion racemosae), the Desmococcetalia olivacei (incl. Desmococcion olivacei), the Dirinetalia massiliensis, the Fucetalia vesiculosi (incl. Ascophyllion nodosi), the Gloeocapsetalia sanguineae, the Lecideetalia confluescentis (incl. Lecideion confluescentis), the Mesotaenietalia berggrenii (incl. Mesotaenion berggrenii, Mesotaenietum berggrenii and Chloromonadetum nivalis), the Naviculetalia gregariae (incl. Oscillatorion limosae and Oscillatorietum limosae), the Porpidietalia zeoroidis (incl. Porpidion zeoroidis), and the Roccelletalia fuciformis (incl. Paralecanographion grumulosae). Further, five orders, seven alliances and four associations, classified in known classes, were described as well. These include: the Bacidinetalia phacodis, the Agonimion octosporae and the Dendrographetalia decolorantis (all in the Arthonio radiatae-Lecidelletea elaeochromae), the Staurothelion solventis (in the Aspicilietea lacustris), the Pediastro duplicis-Scenedesmion quadricaudae and the Pediastro duplicis-Scenedesmetum quadricaudae (both in the Asterionelletea formosae), the Peccanion coralloidis and the Peltuletalia euplocae (both in the Collematetea cristati), the Laminarion hyperboreae, the Saccorhizo polyschidi-Laminarietum and the Alario esculenti-Himanthalietum elongatae (all in the Cystoseiretea crinitae), the Delesserietalia sanguinei, the Delesserion sanguinei and the Delesserietum sanguineae (all in the Lithophylletea soluti), as well as the the Rinodino confragosae-Rusavskietalia elegantis and the Rhizocarpo geographici-Rusavskion elegantis (both in the Rhizocarpetea geographici).

Discovering keys to explain social policies within the social and democratic rule-of-law sate

There is a collective worldview on social policies that is expressed and understood by university professionals. However, it takes students time to construct this knowledge. Here, we provide fundamental ideas and a dynamic to facilitate learning of social policies. The preparation of a brief dictionary of significant terms is to be constructed as a group, alongside the maieutic work to be carried out by the teacher. The goal is to discover keys to understand the meaning of social policies and the underlying values that sustain a social and democratic rule-of-law state such as the one proposed in the Spanish Constitution of 1978. Attention is focused on the structure of the mixed welfare state. This is an integral proposal and comprises three dimensions. First, it considers the state and its possible welfare agents: business, market, the Church and civil society. The attitudes with which universal and inclusive social action is promoted, breaking radically with the aid-based meaning contained in other systems, are then addressed. Finally, we examine human dignity as a principle and aim of intervention, a basis for understanding other concepts such as human, social, labour and political rights. It is to be hoped that these pages prove useful for both teaching staff and students.

Dogs in the paradise: The influence of the cynical philosophy in the construction of the myth of the good savage

This paper studies the influence of cynic philosophy in the construction of the myth of the good savage. In the first part it studies the importance of cynicism in the XVI century and how the cynic influence of Erasmus, More and Montaigne was fundamental to the way that Europe approached the American indigenous. In the second part it studies the cynic motives that could have influenced in the construction of the myth of the good savage.

Los nuevos territorios de la gráfica: imagen, proceso y distribución

La gráfica se encuentra en un proceso de simbiosis con la cultura visual en el que la tecnología de la imagen, la descentralización de la matriz y la adaptación del formato expositivo se funden con el resto de las actividades artísticas. El análisis de las comunidades formadas alrededor de esta práctica configura un puzzle, aparentemente bien encajado, que se divide entre el formalismo y el conceptualismo y entre la idea y el proceso. Las bienales y trienales, a la vanguardia del discurso, cuestionan cualquier concepto que se haya podido asentar con solidez: ante la decadencia del proceso artesanal el mensaje se profundiza nutriéndose de la invectiva provocada por las contradicciones sociales, territoriales y medioambientales para convertirse en un reflejo de la sociedad contemporánea. Comprender la gráfica actual pasa por un ejercicio de aperturismo y un proceso de adaptación al cambio técnico e iconográfico de los sectores implicados. El grabado es ahora un territorio en el que la integración de todas las artes permite cruzar sus fronteras con fluidez.

Statins for the treatment of dementia

The use of statin therapy in established Alzheimer's disease (AD) or vascular dementia (VaD) is a relatively unexplored area. In AD ss-amyloid protein (Ass) is deposited in the form of extracellular plaques and previous studies have determined Ass generation is cholesterol dependent. Hypercholesterolaemia has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of VaD. Due to the role of statins in cholesterol reduction it is biologically plausible they may be efficacious in the treatment of AD and dementia.

A field and reactive transport model study of arsenic in a basaltic rock aquifer

The use of geothermal energy as a source for electricity and district heating has increased over recent decades. Dissolved As can be an important constituent of the geothermal fluids brought to the Earth's surface. Here the field application of laboratory measured adsorption coefficients of aqueous As species on basaltic glass surfaces is discussed. The mobility of As species in the basaltic aquifer in the Nesjavellir geothermal system, Iceland was modelled by the one-dimensional (1D) reactive transport model PHREEQC ver. 2, constrained by a long time series of field measurements with the chemical composition of geothermal effluent fluids, pH, Eh and, occasionally, Fe- and As-dissolved species measurements. Di-, tri- and tetrathioarsenic species (As(OH)S22-, AsS₃H^2-, AsS33- and As(SH)4-) were the dominant form of dissolved As in geothermal waters exiting the power plant (2.556μM total As) but converted to some extent to arsenite (H₃AsO₃) and arsenate HAsO42- oxyanions coinciding with rapid oxidation of S2- to S2O32- and finally to SO42- during surface runoff before feeding into a basaltic lava field with a total As concentration of 0.882μM following dilution with other surface waters. A continuous 25-a data set monitoring groundwater chemistry along a cross section of warm springs on the Lake Thingvallavatn shoreline allowed calibration of the 1D model. Furthermore, a series of ground water wells located in the basaltic lava field, provided access along the line of flow of the geothermal effluent waters towards the lake. The conservative ion Cl^- moved through the basaltic lava field (4100m) in less than10a but As was retarded considerably due to surface reactions and has entered a groundwater well 850m down the flow path as arsenate in accordance to the prediction of the 1D model. The 1D model predicted a complete breakthrough of arsenate in the year 2100. In a reduced system arsenite should be retained for about 1ka. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Evaluation de la campagne Break The Chain 2012

L'Office fédéral de la santé publique (OFSP) a mandaté l'Institut universitaire de médecine sociale et préventive (IUMSP) afin d'évaluer la campagne nationale « Break The Chain » réalisée en avril 2012. Il s'agit d'une campagne de prévention du VIH/sida s'adressant exclusivement aux hommes ayant des rapports sexuels avec des hommes (HSH). Elle a été mise en oeuvre par le Checkpoint Zürich et le Checkpoint Genève avec l'appui de l'Aide suisse contre le sida (ASS) sur mandat de l'OFSP.

Aspectos oceanográficos durante la evaluación del recurso merluza (Cr. BIC SNP-1, 9505-06)

Describe las características frías entre Callao - Talara, por la intensidad del afloramiento costero, el cual se ha observado con valores menores de 18ºC, 35,05 00/00 y 4.00 ml/l de temperatura, salinidad y oxígeno, respectivamente. Algunos rezagos de Aguas Subtropicales Superficiales (ASS) se manifiestan cerca de la costa, frente a Pimentel y Punta Aguja -Talara. Un frente Ecuatorial (FE) muy marcado se presentó entre Talara - Cabo Blanco, con temperatura de 18 a 25 °C y salinidades de 35,1 a 34,0‰. La extensión Sur de la Corriente de Cromwell (ESCC) se encuentra fortalecida dentro de las 40 mn entre Paita-Punta Aguja, y debilitada por fuera de las 50 mn frente a Salaverry. La temperatura y el oxígeno a nivel de la profundidad de pesca variaron de 11,78 a 16,24° C y 0,14 a 1,55 mL/L, respectivamente.

Distribución y concentración de los principales recursos pelágicos peruanos durante el invierno de 1995. Crucero BIC Humboldt 9508-09

Se ejecutó un rastreo acústico en plena estación invernal, entre Tambo de Mora y Paita para determinar la distribución geográfica y vertical de las principales especies pelágicas (anchoveta peruana, sardina, jurel y caballa), basados para ello en información oceanográfica, en interpretación de ecotrazos y en los resultados de los lances y otras observaciones. Como parámetro determinante para la distribución de recursos se observó la intromisión de aguas subtropicales superficiales (ASS) que llegó hasta las 20 mn de la costa entre el Callao y Chimbote y sobre el litoral entre Chicama y Eten. En estas condiciones, la anchoveta peruana tuvo un distribución costera. La sardina mostró una distribución predominantemente muy dispersa. El jurel y la caballa fueron detectados mayormente en forma muy dispersa, con mayor continuidad al norte de las Islas Lobos de Afuera.

Condiciones físicas del mar peruano de Tambo de Mora a Paita, durante agosto y setiembre de 1995

Dan a conocer las condiciones oceanográficas registradas durante el Crucero de Evaluación de la Biomasa Desovante de Anchoveta y Sardina BIC Humboldt 9508-09; se describen las condiciones del ambiente físico durante los meses de agosto y setiembre de 1995 y se comparan con observaciones durante el mismo período en los años 1990 y 1994. Las características térmicas superficiales se presentaron dentro de su rango de normalidad para la época, con una tendencia a condiciones ligeramente frías para los próximos meses. La temperatura superficial del mar osciló de 15,0 a 20,5 °C (a 60 mn frente a Paita). La distribución de las anomalías térmicas, se presentó con valores que fluctuaron de +1,0 °C (100 mn frente a Callao) a -2,3° C (a 60 mn frente a Paita). En general, la zona costera tuvo predominio de anomalías negativas. En toda la región prospectada, la salinidad superficial del mar mostró características de las aguas costeras frías dentro de las 20 mn de la costa, observándose una fuerte advección de aguas subtropicales superficiales (ASS) de Chancay y a Casma. La estructura vertical termohalina mostró característica normales en las áreas cercanas a la costa y casi normales fuera de las 30 millas por efecto de la influencia de las ASS con una columna de agua estable y una termoclina casi superficial.
