The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (Pernambuco State, Brazil), a national marine park, is formed by 21 islands and islets of volcanic origin. An update of the checklist of the benthic cnidarians from some of the archipelago`s reef environments, as well as a study of their corals and calcified hydroids morphometry, was the major goal of this work. Fieldwork was undertaken in February 2005 and in April 2006 and observations were carried out at 13 stations during snorkeling and/or scuba diving up to 30 m deep. Thirty-four species of cnidarians were recorded, of which 17 are new occurrences for the studied area. When added to the species previously listed in the literature, the total number of benthic cnidarians recorded for the Archipelago increases to 57. Stephanocoenia michelini, a new occurrence of zooxanthellate coral, is worthy of mention, as well as the calcified hydroid Millepora braziliensis. Mussismilia hispida tenuisepta showed several variations among its skeletal characters that surpassed the limits of intraspecific morphological variation when compared to those of Mussismilia hispida.

We used c-Fos immunoreactivity to estimate neuronal activation in hypothalamic feeding-regulatory areas of 3-month-old rats fed control or oil-enriched diets (soy or fish) since weaning. While no diet effect was observed in c-Fos immunoreactivity of 24-h fasted animals, the acute response to refeeding was modified by both hyperlipidic diets but with different patterns. Upon refeeding, control-diet rats had significantly increased c-Fos immunoreactivity only in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVH, 142%). In soy-diet rats, refeeding with the soy diet increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMH, 271%) and lateral hypothalamic area (LH, 303%). Refeeding fish-diet rats with the fish diet increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in PVH (161%), DMH (177%), VMH (81%), and ARC (127%). Compared to the fish-diet, c-Fos immunoreactivity was increased in LH by the soy-diet while it was decreased in ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) and arcuate hypothalamic nucleus (ARC). Based on the known roles of the activated nuclei, it is suggested that, unlike the fish-diet, the soy-diet induced a potentially obesogenic profile, with high LH and low VMH/PVH activation after refeeding.

Free fatty acids (FFA) are important mediators of proton transport across membranes. However, information concerning the influence of the Structural features of both FFA and the membrane environment on the proton translocation mechanisms across phospholipid membranes is relatively scant. The effects of FFA chain length, unsaturation and membrane composition on proton transport have been addressed in this study by means of electrical measurements in planar lipid bilayers. Proton conductance (G(H)(+)) was calculated from open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density measurements. We found that cis-unsaturated FFA caused a more pronounced effect on proton transport as compared to Saturated and trans-unsaturated FFA. Cholesterol and cardiolipin decreased membrane leak conductance. Cardiolipin also decreased proton conductance. These effects indicate a dual modulation of protein-independent proton transport by FFA: through a flip-flop mechanism and by modifying a proton diffusional pathway. Moreover the membrane phospholipid composition was shown to importantly affect both processes. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) controls blood pressure, electrolyte balance, cell growth and vascular remodeling. Ang II activates NAD(P)H oxidase in several tissues with important function in the control of insulin secretion. Considering the concomitant occurrence of hypertension, insulin resistance and pancreatic B cell secretion impairment in the development of type II diabetes the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of ANG II on NAD(P)H oxidase activation in isolated pancreatic islets. We found that ANGII-induced superoxide generation via NAD(P)H oxidase activation and increased protein and mRNA levels of NAD(P)H oxidase subunits (p47(PHOX) and gp91(PHOX)). (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important clinical syndrome characterized by abnormalities in the hydroelectrolytic balance. Because of high rates of morbidity and mortality (from 15% to 60%) associated with AKI, the study of its pathophysiology is critical in searching for clinical targets and therapeutic strategies. Severe sepsis is the major cause of AKI. The host response to sepsis involves an inflammatory response, whereby the pathogen is initially sensed by innate immune receptors (pattern recognition receptors [PRRs]). When it persists, this immune response leads to secretion of proinflammatory products that induce organ dysfunction such as renal failure and consequently increased mortality. Moreover, the injured tissue releases molecules resulting from extracellular matrix degradation or dying cells that function as alarmines, which are recognized by PRR in the absence of pathogens in a second wave of injury. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and NOD-like receptors (NLRs) are the best characterized PRRs. They are expressed in many cell types and throughout the nephron. Their activation leads to translocation of nuclear factors and synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. TLRs` signaling primes the cells for a robust inflammatory response dependent on NLRs; the interaction of TLRs and NLRs gives rise to the multiprotein complex known as the inflammasome, which in turn activates secretion of mature interleukin 1 beta and interleukin 18. Experimental data show that innate immune receptors, the inflammasome components, and proinflammatory cytokines play crucial roles not only in sepsis, but also in organ-induced dysfunction, especially in the kidneys. In this review, we discuss the significance of the innate immune receptors in the development of acute renal injury secondary to sepsis.

Leptin is involved in the control of energy storage by the body. Low serum leptin levels, as seen in starvation, are associated with impaired inflammatory T cell responses that can be reversed by exogenous leptin. Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and recurrent infections. Several defects in T cell function have also been described, and allergy, autoimmune disease, and lymphomas or other malignancies can be present. Previous studies in Brazilian CVID patients have shown that, in contrast with mononuclear cells from healthy controls, CVID cells cultured with phytohemagglutinin and added leptin increased the proliferative response and decreased activation-induced apoptosis. Interleukin (IL)-2 and especially IL-4 production also increased significantly, although the effects of exposure to leptin were not observed uniformly in CVID patients. The majority, however, responded in some degree, and some exhibited completely restored values of the four parameters. These remarkable results indicate leptin could be used to improve immune function in these patients. On the other hand, we found no specific correlation between serum leptin levels and the number of infectious events over a 24-month period, presence of autoimmunity, allergies, or cancer in these patients. The results suggest that the absolute value of serum leptin does not determine the clinical behavior of patients or responses to leptin in vitro. Of note is the divergence between serum leptin, response to leptin in vitro, and the presence of autoimmunity, indicating the need to identify the cellular and molecular players involved in the regulation of the immune response by leptin in CVID.

The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A) contains a special amino acid residue named hypusine that is required for its activity, being produced by a post-translational modification using spermidine as substrate. Stem cells from rat skeletal muscles (satellite cells) were submitted to differentiation and an increase of eIF5A gene expression was observed. Higher content of eIF5A protein was found in satellite cells on differentiation in comparison to non-differentiated satellite cells and skeletal muscle. The treatment with NI-guanyl- 1,7-diaminoheptane (GC7), a hypusination inhibitor, reversibly abolished the differentiation process. In association with the differentiation blockage, an increase of glucose consumption and lactate production and a decrease of glucose and palmitic acid oxidation were observed. A reduction in cell proliferation and protein synthesis was also observed. L-Arginine, a spermidine precursor and partial suppressor of muscle dystrophic phenotype, partially abolished the GC7 inhibitory effect on satellite cell differentiation. These results reveal a new physiological role for eIF5A and contribute to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in muscle regeneration.

High-frequency extensions of magnetorotational instability driven by the Velikhov effect beyond the standard magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) regime are studied. The existence of the well-known Hall regime and a new electron inertia regime is demonstrated. The electron inertia regime is realized for a lesser plasma magnetization of rotating plasma than that in the Hall regime. It includes the subregime of nonmagnetized electrons. It is shown that, in contrast to the standard MHD regime and the Hall regime, magnetorotational instability in this subregime can be driven only at positive values of dln Omega/dlnr, where Omega is the plasma rotation frequency and r is the radial coordinate. The permittivity of rotating plasma beyond the standard MHD regime, including both the Hall regime and the electron inertia regime, is calculated.

We report the first observation of two Cabibbo-suppressed ecay modes, Xi(+)(c) -> Sigma(+)pi(-)pi(+) and Xi c+ -> Sigma(-)pi(+)pi(+). We observe 59 +/- 14 over a background of 87, and 22 +/- 8 over a background of 13 events, respectively, for the signals. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 Gev/c Sigma(-) beam. The branching ratios of the decays relative to the Cabibbo-favored Xi c+ -> Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+) are measured to be B(Xi(+)(c) -> Sigma(+)pi(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c) -> Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.48 +/- 0.20, and B(Xi(+)(c) -> Sigma(-)pi(+)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c) -> Sigma(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.18 +/- 0.09, respectively. We also report branching ratios for the same decay modes of the Delta(+)(c) relative to Delta(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+.) (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Texture is one of the most important visual attributes for image analysis. It has been widely used in image analysis and pattern recognition. A partially self-avoiding deterministic walk has recently been proposed as an approach for texture analysis with promising results. This approach uses walkers (called tourists) to exploit the gray scale image contexts in several levels. Here, we present an approach to generate graphs out of the trajectories produced by the tourist walks. The generated graphs embody important characteristics related to tourist transitivity in the image. Computed from these graphs, the statistical position (degree mean) and dispersion (entropy of two vertices with the same degree) measures are used as texture descriptors. A comparison with traditional texture analysis methods is performed to illustrate the high performance of this novel approach. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Texture is an important visual attribute used to describe the pixel organization in an image. As well as it being easily identified by humans, its analysis process demands a high level of sophistication and computer complexity. This paper presents a novel approach for texture analysis, based on analyzing the complexity of the surface generated from a texture, in order to describe and characterize it. The proposed method produces a texture signature which is able to efficiently characterize different texture classes. The paper also illustrates a novel method performance on an experiment using texture images of leaves. Leaf identification is a difficult and complex task due to the nature of plants, which presents a huge pattern variation. The high classification rate yielded shows the potential of the method, improving on traditional texture techniques, such as Gabor filters and Fourier analysis.

This paper introduces a novel methodology to shape boundary characterization, where a shape is modeled into a small-world complex network. It uses degree and joint degree measurements in a dynamic evolution network to compose a set of shape descriptors. The proposed shape characterization method has all efficient power of shape characterization, it is robust, noise tolerant, scale invariant and rotation invariant. A leaf plant classification experiment is presented on three image databases in order to evaluate the method and compare it with other descriptors in the literature (Fourier descriptors, Curvature, Zernike moments and multiscale fractal dimension). This article presents a novel method of plant classification using Gabor wavelet filters to extract texture filters in a foliar surface. The aim of this promising method is to add to the results obtained by other leaf attributes (such as shape, contour, color, among others), increasing, therefore, the percentage of classification of plant species. To corroborate the efficiency of the technique, an experiment using 20 species from Brazilian flora was done and discussed. The results are also compared with texture Fourier descriptors and cooccurrence matrices. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background: Photodynamic therapy is mainly used for treatment of malignant lesions, and is based on selective location of a photosensitizer in the tumor tissue, followed by light at wavelengths matching the photosensitizer absorption spectrum. In molecular oxygen presence, reactive oxygen species are generated, inducing cells to die. One of the limitations of photodynamic therapy is the variability of photosensitizer concentration observed in systemically photosensitized tissues, mainly due to differences of the tissue architecture, cell lines, and pharmacokinetics. This study aim was to demonstrate the spatial distribution of a hematoporphyrin derivative, Photogem(R), in the healthy liver tissue of Wistar rats via fluorescence spectroscopy, and to understand its implications on photodynamic response. Methods: Fifteen male Wistar rats were intravenously photosensitized with 1.5 mg/kg body weight of Photogem(R). Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy at 532nm-excitation was performed on ex vivo liver slices. The influence of photosensitizer surface distribution detected by fluorescence and the induced depth of necrosis were investigated in five animals. Results: Photosensitizer distribution on rat liver showed to be greatly non-homogeneous. This may affect photodynamic therapy response as shown in the results of depth of necrosis. Conclusions: As a consequence of these results, this study suggests that photosensitizer surface spatial distribution should be taken into account in photodynamic therapy dosimetry, as this will help to better predict clinical results. Most physiological effects of thyroid hormones are mediated by the two thyroid hormone receptor subtypes, TR alpha and TR beta. Several pharmacological effects mediated by TR beta might be beneficial in important medical conditions such as obesity, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes, and selective TR beta activation may elicit these effects while maintaining an acceptable safety profile, To understand the molecular determinants of affinity and subtype selectivity of TR ligands, we have successfully employed a ligand- and structure-guided pharmacophore-based approach to obtain the molecular alignment of a large series of thyromimetics. Statistically reliable three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) and three-dimensional quantitative structure-selectivity relationship (3D-QSSR) models were obtained using the comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) method, and the visual analyses of the contour maps drew attention to a number of possible opportunities for the development of analogs with improved affinity and selectivity. Furthermore, the 3D-QSSR analysis allowed the identification of a novel and previously unmentioned halogen bond, bringing new insights to the mechanism of activity and selectivity of thyromimetics.
