Some faculty members from different universities around the world have begun to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool in recent years. These experiences show, in most cases, very satisfactory results and a substantial improvement in various basic skills, as well as a positive influence on the students' motivation. Nevertheless and despite the growing importance of e-learning methodologies based on the use of the Internet for higher education, the use of Wikipedia as a teaching resource remains scarce among university faculty.Our investigation tries to identify which are the main factors that determine acceptance or resistance to that use. We approach the decision to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool by analyzing both the individual attributes of faculty members and the characteristics of the environment where they develop their teaching activity. From a specific survey sent to all faculty of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), pioneer and leader in online education in Spain, we have tried to infer the influence of these internal and external elements. The questionnaire was designed to measure different constructs: perceived quality of Wikipedia, teaching practices involving Wikipedia, use experience, perceived usefulness and use of 2.0 tools. Control items were also included for gathering information on gender, age, teaching experience, academic rank, and area of expertise.Our results reveal that academic rank, teaching experience, age or gender, are not decisive factors in explaining the educational use of Wikipedia. Instead, the decision to use it is closely linked to the perception of Wikipedia's quality, the use of other collaborative learning tools, an active attitude towards web 2.0 applications, and connections with the professional non-academic world. Situational context is also very important, since the use is higher when faculty members have got reference models in their close environment and when they perceive it is positively valued by their colleagues. As far as these attitudes, practices and cultural norms diverge in different scientific disciplines, we have also detected clear differences in the use of Wikipedia among areas of academic expertise. As a consequence, a greater application of Wikipedia both as a teaching resource and as a driver for teaching innovation would require much more active institutional policies and some changes in the dominant academic culture among faculty members.

FOSS has always been particularly welcome in Universities. Its spirit corresponds generally with the academic state of mind, and royalty-free technologies are particularly appreciated where money is usually lacking.But at the opposite side of the spectrum, the universities¿ TTO¿s (Technology Transfer Officers) are supposed to ¿valorize¿ the production of research departments and to enable profit making cooperations with the industry. How should FOSS licensing be tackled in such context?

Universities must motivate future professionals so that they are able to apply their experience over and beyond the scientific and technological context. These professionals should also be trained so that they are aware of the current position as regards the economy and limited energy resources, and they must be creative, knowledgeable and committed if they are to rethink the current model.The Departments of Architectural Technology II and Applied Physics, in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Centre of Technology, Innovation and Education for Sustainability (CITIES), believed that students could be given the opportunity to specialise in the area of sustainable development by means of their final theses [2]. With this objective in mind, a line of theses called Energy Assessments was created as part of the Plan for Resource Consumption Efficiency (PECR). The line was based on a learning strategy that focused on the student.The teaching staff was able to observe that, in terms of cognitive aspects, the students improved their knowledge of environmental issues and the associated skills, and that they were more able to solve problems in the area of sustainability and had greater concerns about this subject matter after having completed their theses.

The research of condition monitoring of electric motors has been wide for several decades. The research and development at universities and in industry has provided means for the predictive condition monitoring. Many different devices and systems are developed and are widely used in industry, transportation and in civil engineering. In addition, many methods are developed and reported in scientific arenas in order to improve existing methods for the automatic analysis of faults. The methods, however, are not widely used as a part of condition monitoring systems. The main reasons are, firstly, that many methods are presented in scientific papers but their performance in different conditions is not evaluated, secondly, the methods include parameters that are so case specific that the implementation of a systemusing such methods would be far from straightforward. In this thesis, some of these methods are evaluated theoretically and tested with simulations and with a drive in a laboratory. A new automatic analysis method for the bearing fault detection is introduced. In the first part of this work the generation of the bearing fault originating signal is explained and its influence into the stator current is concerned with qualitative and quantitative estimation. The verification of the feasibility of the stator current measurement as a bearing fault indicatoris experimentally tested with the running 15 kW induction motor. The second part of this work concentrates on the bearing fault analysis using the vibration measurement signal. The performance of the micromachined silicon accelerometer chip in conjunction with the envelope spectrum analysis of the cyclic bearing faultis experimentally tested. Furthermore, different methods for the creation of feature extractors for the bearing fault classification are researched and an automatic fault classifier using multivariate statistical discrimination and fuzzy logic is introduced. It is often important that the on-line condition monitoring system is integrated with the industrial communications infrastructure. Two types of a sensor solutions are tested in the thesis: the first one is a sensor withcalculation capacity for example for the production of the envelope spectra; the other one can collect the measurement data in memory and another device can read the data via field bus. The data communications requirements highly depend onthe type of the sensor solution selected. If the data is already analysed in the sensor the data communications are needed only for the results but in the other case, all measurement data need to be transferred. The complexity of the classification method can be great if the data is analysed at the management level computer, but if the analysis is made in sensor itself, the analyses must be simple due to the restricted calculation and memory capacity.

This paper takes a regional studies approach to assess spin-offs from a university-based technology transfer network. We first detect the regional objectives, inputs and outputs needed to assess spin-offs from support programmes. We then provide evidence on regional mechanisms for firm creation. We analyse spin-offs created at Catalan universities and find that many efficient spin-offs have formal technology transfer agreements, and emerge from technology-oriented universities. We also find that higher innovation levels and experience from the parent university are associated with higher efficiency, which is positively related to future fundamental profitability. Finally, we propose regional policy making and research directions.

Lappeenrannan teknillisen korkeakoulun sähkötekniikan osasto muutti 1.8.2005 sähkötekniikan tutkinnon kaksiportaiseksi ja vastaamaan näin Bologna-prosessia ja Suomen yliopistolainsäädäntöä. Tutkinnonuudistuksen myötä osasto haluaa varmistaa sähkötekniikan tutkintojen laadun ja vertailtavuuden sekä parantaa opiskelijoidensekä henkilökunnan liikkuvuutta. Tutkintojen laatu ja vertailtavuus osoitetaan sähkötekniikan osaston benchmark-projektilla, jossa kerätään tietoja maisteri- ja tohtorintutkintoa tarjoavista eurooppalaisista yliopistoista. Diplomityö käsittää BM-projektin kolmannen vaiheen suunnittelun ja toteutuksen sisältäen teoriaa benchmark-projekteille tyypillisistä toimintatavoista. Hyväksi havaitut menetelmiä, kuten kyselyt ja matriisit, on tässä työssä otettu soveltuvin osin sähkötekniikan osaston BM-projektin työkaluiksi. Diplomityössä analysoidaan työkalujen avulla BM-kumppaneilta kerättyjä tietoja sekä esitetään ratkaisuja, miten sähkötekniikan osastolla voidaan jatkaa parhaiden toimintatapojen löytämistä.

Tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää taloushallinnon asiakasorientaation tilanne Suomessa. Asiakasorientaatio taloushallinnossa ymmärretään asiakaskannattavuuslaskentana, joka on osa asiakkuuden johtamista. Asiakaskannattavuuslaskentaa tutkittiin innovaationa ja tutkimusongelmana selvitettiin miten ja minkä tekijöiden vaikutuksesta diffuusio on tapahtunut Suomessa ajanjaksolla 1995-2006. Alatutkimusongelmina tutkittiin innovaation omaksuneiden yritysten erityispiirteitä sekä syitä innovaation hitaaseen diffuusioon. Tutkielma toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena. Aineisto koottiin talouslehtien antamien viitteiden sekä aiheesta teetettyjen diplomitöiden ja pro gradujen case-osuuksien pohjalta. Tutkielman empiria-osiota on analysoitu sekä kvalitatiivisesti että kvantitatiivisesti, painoarvon ollessa kvalitatiivisessa tekniikassa. Asiakaskannattavuuslaskenta on levinnyt Suomeen konsultointiyritysten, yliopistojen ja median välityksellä. Innovaation leviämiseen ovat osaltaan vaikuttanut tasapainoitetun mittariston ja CRM:n levimäinen. Tärkeimpiä motiiveja ja syitä yritysten haluun omaksua innovaatio ovat kiristyvä kilpailu, tietojärjestelmien kehittyminen ja vanhan laskentajärjestelmän informatiivisyyden riittämättömyys. Syitä hitaaseen diffuusion puolestaan löytyi 1990-luvun lopun kehittymättömistä tietojärjestelmistä, markkinoinnin ja taloushallinnon erilaisista näkökannoista sekä resurssien puutteesta.

BACKGROUND: The literature suggests that intraoperative fractures of the greater trochanter and the metaphysis are increased with uncemented stems and the direct anterior approach. This study aims to determine the incidence and assess the functional and radiological outcome after such fractures. METHODS: 484 consecutive total hip replacements (THR) (64 ± 12 years) were analyzed. We treated trochanteric fractures conservatively without any further denuding, and secured metaphyseal fissures with cerclages. Postoperative X-rays and at the latest follow-up were compared to assess secondary fracture displacement and stem subsidence. Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) scores after 1 year were analyzed. For each patient sustaining a fracture, two patients without fractures were matched in terms of age, body mass index and gender. RESULTS: 13 (2.7 %, 5 male, 68 ± 9 years) patients with intraoperative fractures of the greater trochanter (n = 8) or the metaphysis (n = 5) were analyzed. Consolidation was observed in 7/8 patients sustaining a trochanteric fracture while secondary displacement of the fragment occurred in one case. Stem subsidence was observed in 2/5 cases (5 and 7 mm). Patients who sustained a fracture showed a trend towards poorer WOMAC scores at 1 year postoperatively, compared to patients without fractures. A significantly increased joint stiffness was also observed. CONCLUSION: The intraoperative fracture risk in this series of THR through a direct anterior approach was 2.7 %. Trochanteric fractures do heal without primary fixation. Metaphyseal fractures heal well if immediately stabilized with a cerclage.

Tutkimuksessa haetaan vastausta kysymykseen: millaista tietoa ammattikorkeakoulun taloushallinnon laskentajärjestelmistä pitäisi saada, jotta se vastaisi tiedon tarvitsijoiden tarpeisiin, sekä ammattikorkeakoulun sisällä että organisaation sidosryhmiin nähden, mahdollisimman tarkoituksenmukaisesti ja tehokkaasti? Tavoitteina on selvittää taloushallinnon laskentajärjestelmien kehitystarpeet maksullisen palvelutoiminnan osalta ja vertailla kolmen eri ammattikorkeakoulun välillä taloushallinnon laskentajärjestelmistä saatavaa tietoa tuoden esille parhaat käytännöt ja tiedon-tuottamistavat. Tutkimus on rajattu koskemaan maksullista palvelutoimintaa ja tutkittavaa ilmiötä käsitellään ammattikorkeakoulun sisällä. Näkökulmina ovat johtajan ja päätöksentekijän, kehittäjän ja taloushallinto-osaston näkökulmat. Tutkimus on teemahaastatteluin toteutettava kvalita-tiivinen case-tutkimus, jonka lopputulemana syntyy 'Taloushallinnon raportoinnin johdonmukainen ja aktiivinen kehittäminen' -toimintamalli. Tutkimuksen teoria perustuu pääosin laskentatoimesta (strateginen, johdon ja rahoituksen laskentatoimi sekä laskentatoimi yrityksen informaatiojärjestelmänä), taloushallinnosta (mm.talousjohtaminen, taloushallinnon muuttuva rooli) sekä benchmarkingista kirjoitetulle kirjallisuudelle. Näistä muodostuu tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys jaedelleen teemahaastattelu-lomake, joka toimii empiirisen osion tiedon hankinnan pohjana.

As production and use of nanomaterials in commercial products grow it is imperative to ensure these materials are used safely with minimal unwanted impacts on human health or the environment. Foremost among the populations of potential concern are workers who handle nanomaterials in a variety of occupational settings, including university laboratories, industrial manufacturing plants and other institutions. Knowledge about prudent practices for handling nanomaterials is being developed by many groups around the world but may be communicated in a way that is difficult for practitioners to access or use. The GoodNanoGuide is a collaborative, open-access project aimed at creating an international forum for the development and discussion of prudent practices that can be used by researchers, workers and their representatives, occupational safety professionals, governmental officials and even the public. The GoodNanoGuide is easily accessed by anyone with access to a web browser and aims to become a living repository of good practices for the nanotechnology enterprise. Raportti käsittelee Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston sähkötekniikan uutta kaksivaiheista tutkintorakennetta suhteessa ulkomaisiin vastaaviin master-tasoisiin tutkintorakenteisiin. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytetään benchmarking-menetelmää. Tutkimusainesto kerätttiin 52:n eurooppalaisen yliopiston www-sivuilta ja opinto-oppaista. Näistä yliopistoista valittiin tarkempaan vertailuun kolme mielenkiintoiseksi vertailukumppaniksi valittua sähkötekniikan koulutusyksikköä: TUL, Technical University of Lodz, Puolasta. TUM,Technical University of München, Saksasta. KTH, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, Ruotsi. Toisen vaiheen vertailutulosten valossa näyttää siltä, että kaikkien vertailtujen yliopistojen tutkintojen sisällöt ja määrät ovat samankaltaisia, joten vertailukumppanit oletettavasti kykenevät ymmärtämään eri yliopistojen koulutusohjelmien toteutuksia. Toisaalta sähkötekniikan koulutuksen toteutukset näyttävät vertailuissa yliopistoissa sen verran erilaisilta, että vertailun avulla on mahdollista oppia eri toteutuksien taustalla olevista kulttuurieroista ja tavoitteista, sekä päästä hedelmälliseen yhteistyöhön vertailtavien yliopistojen sähkötekniikan osastojen kanssa.

Durante los cursos 2005/06 y 2006/07 se llevó a cabo un estudio sobre la incorporación de un centro virtual de recursos educativos como herramienta para la formación en TIC de estudiantes de magisterio de las universidades Rovira i Virgili y la de Lleida en el marco de la asignatura troncal Nuevas tecnologías aplicadas a la educación. Además de analizar la incidencia del centro virtual en la formación profesional de los estudiantes en el uso de TIC, el estudio tenía como objetivo comparar –entre los alumnos de ambos cursos y ambas universidades– el impacto de la asignatura en su percepción acerca de su capacitación y dominio de las TIC. En la primera parte del artículo se detallan los principales objetivos e instrumentos de nuestra investigación, en la segunda se describen y ejemplifican las características y funciones de la herramienta. Por último, se plantean los principales resultados y conclusiones de nuestra investigación.
