Genetic testing with primary prevention and moral hazard

We develop a model where a free genetic test reveals whether the individual tested has a low or high probability of developing a disease. A costly prevention effort allows high-risk agents to decrease the probability of developing the disease. Agents are not obliged to take the test, but must disclose its results to insurers. Insurers offer separating contracts which take into account the individual risk, so that taking the test is associated to a discrimination risk. We study the individual decisions to take the test and to undertake the prevention effort as a function of the effort cost and of its e¢ ciency. We obtain that, if effort is observable by insurers, agents undertake the test only if the effort cost is neither too large nor too low. If the effort cost is not observable by insurers, they face a moral hazard problem which induces them to under-provide insurance. We obtain the counterintuitive result that moral hazard increases the value of the test if the effort cost is low enough. Also, agents may perform the test for lower levels of prevention e¢ ciency when effort is not observable

The crime kuznets curve

We document the existence of a Crime Kuznets Curve in US states since the 1970s. As income levels have risen, crime has followed an inverted U-shaped pattern, first increasing and then dropping. The Crime Kuznets Curve is not explained by income inequality. In fact, we show that during the sample period inequality has risen monotonically with income, ruling out the traditional Kuznets Curve. Our finding is robust to adding a large set of controls that are used in the literature to explain the incidence of crime, as well as to controlling for state and year fixed effects. The Curve is also revealed in nonparametric specifications. The Crime Kuznets Curve exists for property crime and for some categories of violent crime.

Evolución de la oruga o constreñimiento de la mariposa: una mirada al rol económico de China en Sudán. (1999- 2008)

La presente monografía tiene como propósito analizar el rol económico de China en Sudán de 1999 al 2008. Tras su crisis en la década de 1990, se examina el efecto que el rol chino tuvo en los sectores productivos de la economía sudanesa: el textil, el agrícola, el metalúrgico y el petrolero, aun cómo la estabilidad política en el régimen de Omar Al-Bashir en el ámbito político y el conflicto en Darfur como factor social. Como un último objetivo esta investigación, basándose en el trabajo de Mohammed Ayoob, se reevalúa el estatus de Sudán como Estado Tercermundista ilustrándolo a través del uso de la analogía de la metamorfosis de una mariposa.

Economic shocks and crime: evidence from the crash of ponzi schemes

In November 2008, Colombian authorities dismantled a network of Ponzi schemes, making hundreds of thousands of investors lose tens of millions of dollars throughout the country. Using original data on the geographical incidence of the Ponzi schemes, this paper estimates the impact of their break down on crime. We find that the crash of Ponzi schemes differentially exacerbated crime in affected districts. Confirming the intuition of the standard economic model of crime, this effect is only present in places with relatively weak judicial and law enforcement institutions, and with little access to consumption smoothing mechanisms such as microcredit. In addition, we show that, with the exception of economically-motivated felonies such as robbery, violent crime is not affected by the negative shock.

A justiça e a Psicologia Forense movimentam-se no mesmo terreno, o das personalidades e comportamentos humanos, no entanto, operam em campos não tão complementares quanto o necessário. O berço da investigação respeita a História e evolução da penalidade, sobrevoando posteriormente nos caminhos (en) cruzilhados entre a Psicologia e o Direito. Particularizou-se os laços que envolvem a avaliação psicológica forense e a perícia de personalidade quando pedidas em tribunal, e deslizou-se superficialmente pela ética e deontologia. A sua máxime consiste na procura de conhecimentos sobre o nível de Severidade Punitiva, em processos de menores relativos à aplicação da Lei Tutelar Educativa, sendo a adolescência uma etapa da vida onde frequentemente se cometem algumas condutas transgressivas e onde as mesmas emergem Para isso, aplicou-se um instrumento psicológico construído para o efeito, o Índice de Severidade Penalizadora e Psicologização (Criminalização Secundária – Transgressionalidades e Delinquência Juvenil (ISPP-CS-TDJ). Metaph’ornament and crime: the sequel to the delict of the centenary of Adolf Loos’ anti-ornament indictment

O videoclipe victimless crime e as imagens nos videoclipes

RESUMO: No âmbito do Mestrado em Estudos Cinematográficos da Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, propôs-se a concretização de um Projecto-Tese na área do videoclipe. O projecto consiste na produção, realização e edição de um videoclipe. Victimless Crime é o nome da música, criada durante o ano de 2009 e lançada em Maio de 2010, da banda pop lisboeta Soulbizness. O resultado é um videoclipe com a duração de três minutos e vinte e seis segundos, que entende a possibilidade de uma utilização real. Na componente teórica procede-se ao estudo do videoclipe enquanto formato audiovisual e suas especificidades. Segue-se a análise de Victimless Crime, através do Modelo de Análise proposto por Francisco J. G. Tarín, assente em três vectores essenciais: Análise Textual; Análise de Recursos Expressivos e Narrativos; e Interpretação. ABSTRACT: Within the scope of the MFA in Cinematography at the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, a thesis project was proposed in the field of music video. The project consists of producing, directing and editing a music video for the song Victimless Crime, created in 2009 and released in May 2010 by the Lisbon-based pop band Soulbizness. The result is a three minute, twenty-three second music video, complete and ready to be released. The project also includes a theoretical component, consisting of a general review of the music video as an audiovisual format and its characteristics, followed by an analysis of Victimless Crime, as per the Analysis Model proposed by Francisco J. G. Tarín, which is based on three main topics: Textual Analysis; Narrative Analysis and Expressive Language Analysis; and Interpretation.

Se o massacre é um tratado de história de humanidade, parece que, no contexto dos conflitos religiosos da França do século XVI, o recurso ao massacre se tornou objecto de repulsa, apesar de muito praticado. A partir da análise do dossiê do processo contra os responsáveis do massacre dos Valdenses do Lubéron em 1551, este estudo mostra como o advogado do rei denunciou este “Crime de inumanidade”.

A Study on the Efficiency of Synbiotics for Prevention and Control of Diarrhoea in 21 Dogs Submitted to Radiotherapy

A synbiotic is a formulation containing both probiotics and prebiotics. This study aims to evaluate the effect of supplementation with a synbiotic containing Enterococcus faecium strain E1707 (NCIMB 10415) in preventing or controlling diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal signs in boarded canine radiotherapy patients. A double-blind, randomized, placebocontrolled clinical trial was carried out in 21 adult dogs undergoing radiotherapy and boarded for a duration period of 2 to 3 weeks to treat their cancers. Dogs were randomly divided between two groups: A and B, the synbiotic and placebo group, respectively. The content of the sachets was added to the food once daily. Faecal score was assessed daily, and dogs were also monitored for the development of diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal signs such as weight loss, reduced appetite and vomiting. The results from descriptive statistics seem to favour group B, however these findings were not validated with inferential statistics due to insufficient statistical sample power. Because of this, it is not possible to make conclusions about the benefits of synbiotic as supportive treatment for dogs undergoing radiotherapy. All results should be considered to be preliminary, until they are elucidated by further animal inclusion.
