The aim of this study is to assess the frequency of rabies antibodies in free-ranging capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella nigritus) in a fragmented, environmentally protected, rural area of southeastern Brazil. Thirty-six free-ranging monkeys were tested by the rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test for detection of antibodies against rabies virus. Four individuals (11.11 %) had neutralizing antibody titers a parts per thousand yen0.25 IU/mL, demonstrating rabies virus exposure.

Bats are main reservoirs for Lyssavirus worldwide, which is an important public health issue because it constitutes one of the big challenges in rabies control. Yet, little is known about how the virus is maintained among bats, and the epidemiological relationships remain poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to investigate the distribution of the rabies virus (RABV) in bat tissues and organs and to genetically characterize virus isolates from naturally infected non-hematophagous bats. The heminested reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (hnRT-PCR) and sequencing using primers to the nucleoprotein coding gene were performed. The results showed a dissemination of the RABV in different tissues and organs, particularly in the salivary glands, tongue, lungs, kidneys, bladder, intestine and feces, suggesting other possible forms of RABV elimination and the possibility of transmission among these animals. The phylogenetic analysis confirmed that different variants of RABV are maintained by non-hematophagous bats in nature and have similar tissue distribution irrespective of bat species and phylogenetic characterization. Alternative protein sources have been studied in order to reduce feed costs. In a completely random experimental design (five treatments and six replicates) 180 Nile tilapia fingerlings were distributed in 30 aquaria (50 L). The fish were fed isoprotein (28% digestible protein) and isoenergetic (3000 kcal digestible energy kg(-1)) diets where soybean meal was substituted by fodder radish meal at the following levels: 0, 12.5, 25, 50 and 75% Performance and chemical composition of the fillet were determined after 90 days. It was conclude that fodder radish meal can substitute soybean meal up to 25% without any interference on performance and fillet composition of Nile tilapia fingerlings.

Studies in which ACTH was administrated in heifers after the occurrence of luteolysis showed a delay in the onset of estrus and the estrus duration was shortened. This study evaluated the effect of acute stress by road transportation on estrous behavior and ovulation, monitored by serum progesterone and cortisol concentrations in cows at the periovulatory period, using a crossover design. Eleven crossbred cows, divided into Control and Transport groups had their estrus cycle synchronized with GnRH, an intravaginal progesterone device, and cloprostenol. Thirty hours after withdrawal of the device, the animals of the Transport group were transported for 60 min by truck and those from the Control group remained at pasture. Ovarian ultrasound examination was performed every 12 h from device withdrawal until ovulation in every cow. From the day after removal of the device until ovulation estrous behavior was monitored 24 h a day. Blood samples for serum cortisol and progesterone concentrations were taken at -90, -60, 0, 30, 60 and 180 min in relation to the end of transportation. Transportation during the estrous period induced stress in cows as reflected by changes in serum concentrations of progesterone and cortisol. However, we did not detect impairment in estrus expression, estrus duration or ovulation (P>0.05). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hepcidin is a highly conserved disulfide-bonded peptide that plays a central role in iron homeostasis. During systemic inflammation, hepcidin up-regulation is responsible for hypoferremia. This study aimed to analyze the influence of the inflammatory process induced by complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the liver expression of hepcidin mRNA transcripts and plasma iron concentration of sheep. The expression levels of hepcidin transcripts were up-regulated after CFA or LPS. Hypoferremic response was observed at 12 h (15.46 +/- 6.05 mu mol/L) or 6 h (14.59 +/- 4.38 mu mol/L) and iron reached its lowest level at 96 h (3.08 +/- 1.18 mu mol/L) or 16 h (4.06 +/- 1.58 mu mol/L) after CFA administration or LPS infusion, respectively. This study demonstrated that the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin was up-regulated in sheep liver in response to systemic inflammation. These findings extend our knowledge on the relationship between the systemic inflammatory response, hepcidin and iron, and provide a starting point for additional studies on iron metabolism and the inflammatory process in sheep. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of nicotine and ovariectomy on alveolar bone regeneration after exodontias in rats.Materials and Methods: For 30 days, sham ovariectomized (OVX)/NaCl, sham OVX/nicotine, OVX/NaCl, and OVX/nicotine animals were given 2 daily injections of saline or hemisulfate of nicotine. After this period, exodontic procedures were carried out and treatment continued up to the time of euthanasia on clays 7 and 14 when the alveoli were removed for further analyses. Results: The data confirmed that nicotine significantly delays the alveolar regeneration process after dental extraction in rats and showed that the association of nicotine with ovariectomy exacerbates these results. Conclusion: These results indicate that nicotine potentiated the effect of estrogen deficiency on bone regeneration induced by ovariectomy. Objective. In the present study, the role of macrophages and mast cells in mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-induced release of neutrophil chemotactic factor was investigated.Study design. MTA suspension (50 mg/mL) was plated over inserts on macrophages or mast cells for 90 minutes. Untreated cells served as controls. Cells were washed and cultured for 90 minutes in RPMI without the stimuli. Macrophages and mast cell supernatants were injected intraperitoneally (0.5 mL/cavity), and neutrophil migration was assessed 6 hours later. In some experiments, cells were incubated for 30 minutes with dexamethasone (DEX, 10 mu M/well), BWA4C (BW, 100 mu M/well) or U75302 (U75, 10 mu M/well). The concentration of Leukotriene B-4 (LTB4) in the cell-free supernatant from mast cells and macrophage culture was measured by ELISA.Results. Supernatants from MTA-stimulated macrophages and mast cells caused neutrophil migration. The release of neutrophil chemotactic factor by macrophages and mast cells was significantly inhibited by DEX, BW, or U75. Macrophages and mast cells expressed mRNA for interleukin-1 (IL-1)beta and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) and the pretreatment of macrophages and mast cells with DEX, BW, or U75 significantly altered IL-1 beta and MIP-2 mRNA expression. LTB4 was detected in the MTA-stimulated macrophage supernatant but not mast cells.Conclusions. MTA-induces the release of neutrophil chemotactic factor substances from macrophages and mast cells with participation of IL-1 beta, MIP-2, and LTB4. The aim of this study was to investigate cellular migration induced by calcium hydroxide to air-pouch cavities in mice. The migration was more specific to neutrophil and was dose and time dependent (peaking 96 h after stimulation). This migration was inhibited by pretreatment with thalidomide, indomethacin, MK886, meloxicam, dexamethasone, MK886 associated with indomethacin, and MK886 associated with indomethacin and dexamethasone. The air-pouch exudate from animals stimulated with calcium hydroxide showed an increase of leukotriene-B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (KC), and macrophage inflammatory protein 2 (MIP-2) release. Pretreatment with 3% thioglycollate increased the macrophage population in the air pouch but did not change neutrophil migration. Depleting the resident mast cells through chronic pretreatment with compound 48/80 did not alter neutrophil migration in response to calcium hydroxide. It was possible to conclude that calcium hydroxide-induced neutrophil migration to the air-pouch cavity in mice is mediated by LTB4, TNF-alpha, KC, MIP-2, and prostaglandins, but it was not dependent on macrophages or mast cells.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate histomorphometrically the effect of alveolex (Propolis 10%) on the repair of bone cavities in the calvaria of rats. MATERIALS and METHODS: A 5 mm diameter bone defect was made in the calvaria of male Wistar rats using the drill-type trephine. The defects were filled with rhBMP-21Alveolex, rhBMP-2, Alveolex, or coagulum. Twenty-eight animals with seven subjects on each were sacrificed 30 days after surgery and samples were fixed and embedded in paraffin. Histological sections stained by HE (hematoxylin and eosin) were obtained from the calvaria bone defect and analyzed by a differential point-counting method. RESULTS: Group I and II, rhBMP-21Alveolex and rhBMP-2, respectively, presented higher levels of newly formed bone than other groups (P < 0.001). There were not significant differences between groups I and II (P > 0.05). In addition, there was not significant difference between groups III and IV, Control-Coagulum and Alveolex, respectively (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Alveolex has increased the bone repair in calvaria defects of rats when associated to rhBMP-2, however without significant differences for rhBMP-2 isolated group; Alveolex isolated group showed the lowest levels of newly formed bone with no significant differences to coagulum group (control).
