Bacteria growing in paper machines can cause several problems. Biofilms detaching from paper machine surfaces may lead to holes and spots in the end product or even break the paper web leading to expensive delays in production. Heat stable endospores will remain viable through the drying section of paper machine, increasing the microbial contamination of paper and board. Of the bacterial species regularly found in the end products, Bacillus cereus is the only one classified as a pathogen. Certain B. cereus strains produce cereulide, the toxin that causes vomiting disease in food poisonings connected to B. cereus. The first aim of this thesis was to identify harmful bacterial species colonizing paper machines and to assess the role of bacteria in the formation of end product defects. We developed quantitative PCR methods for detecting Meiothermus spp. and Pseudoxanthomonas taiwanensis. Using these methods I showed that Meiothermus spp. and Psx. taiwanensis are major biofoulers in paper machines. I was the first to be able to show the connection between end product defects and biofilms in the wet-end of paper machines. I isolated 48 strains of primary-biofilm forming bacteria from paper machines. Based on one of them, strain K4.1T, I described a novel bacterial genus Deinobacterium with Deinobacterium chartae as the type species. I measured the transfer of Bacillus cereus spores from packaging paper into food. To do this, we constructed a green fluorescent protein (GFP) labelled derivative of Bacillus thuringiensis and prepared paper containing spores of this strain. Chocolate and rice were the recipient foods when transfer of the labelled spores from the packaging paper to food was examined. I showed that only minority of the Bacillus cereus spores transferred into food from packaging paper and that this amount is very low compared to the amount of B. cereus naturally occurring in foods. Thus the microbiological risk caused by packaging papers is very low. Until now, the biological function of cereulide for the producer cell has remained unknown. I showed that B. cereus can use cereulide to take up K+ from environment where K+ is scarce: cereulide binds K+ ions outside the cell with high affinity and transports these ions across cell membrane into the cytoplasm. Externally added cereulide increased the growth rate of cereulide producing strains in medium where potassium was growth limiting. In addition, cereulide producing strains outcompeted cereulide non-producing B. cereus in potassium deficient environment, but not when the potassium concentration was high. I also showed that cereulide enhances biofilm formation of B. cereus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and test methods which could improve local estimates of a general model fitted to a large area. In the first three studies, the intention was to divide the study area into sub-areas that were as homogeneous as possible according to the residuals of the general model, and in the fourth study, the localization was based on the local neighbourhood. According to spatial autocorrelation (SA), points closer together in space are more likely to be similar than those that are farther apart. Local indicators of SA (LISAs) test the similarity of data clusters. A LISA was calculated for every observation in the dataset, and together with the spatial position and residual of the global model, the data were segmented using two different methods: classification and regression trees (CART) and the multiresolution segmentation algorithm (MS) of the eCognition software. The general model was then re-fitted (localized) to the formed sub-areas. In kriging, the SA is modelled with a variogram, and the spatial correlation is a function of the distance (and direction) between the observation and the point of calculation. A general trend is corrected with the residual information of the neighbourhood, whose size is controlled by the number of the nearest neighbours. Nearness is measured as Euclidian distance. With all methods, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) were lower, but with the methods that segmented the study area, the deviance in single localized RMSEs was wide. Therefore, an element capable of controlling the division or localization should be included in the segmentation-localization process. Kriging, on the other hand, provided stable estimates when the number of neighbours was sufficient (over 30), thus offering the best potential for further studies. Even CART could be combined with kriging or non-parametric methods, such as most similar neighbours (MSN).

This dissertation is an onomastic study of variation in women s name phrases in official documents in Finland during the period 1780−1930. The aim is to discuss from a socio-onomastic perspective both the changeover from patronymics to inherited family names and the use of surnames after marriage (i.e. whether women adopted their husbands family names or retained their maiden names), before new laws in this area entered into force in Finland in the early 20th century. In 1920, a law on family names that required fixed names put an end to the use of the patronymic as a person s only surname. After 1929, it was no longer possible for a married woman to retain her maiden name. Methodologically, to explain this development from a socio-onomastic perspective, I have based my study on a syntactic-semantic analysis of the actual name phrases. To be able to demonstrate the extensive material, I have elaborated a scheme to divide the 115 different types of name phrases into 13 main categories. The analysis of the material for Helsinki is based on frequency calculations of the different types of name phrases every thirtieth year, as well as on describing variation in the structure and semantic content of the name phrases, e.g. social variation in the use of titles and epithets. In addition to this, by applying a biographic-genealogical method, I have conducted two case studies of the usage of women s name phrases in the two chosen families. The study is based on parish registers from the period 1780−1929, estate inventory documents from the period 1780−1928, registration forms for liberty of trade from the period 1880−1908, family announcements on newspapers from the period 1829−1888, gravestones from the period 1796−1929 and diaries from the periods 1799−1801 and 1818−1820 providing a corpus of 5 950 name phrases. The syntactic-semantic analysis has revealed the overall picture of various ways of denoting women in official documents. In Helsinki, towards the end of the 19th century, the use of inherited family names seems to be almost fully developed in official contexts. At the late 19th century, a patronymic still appears as the only surname of some working-class women whereas in the early 20th century patronymics were only entered in the parish register as a kind of middle name. In the beginning of the 19th century, most married women were still registered under their maiden names, with a few exceptions among the bourgeoisie and upper class. The comparative analysis of name phrases in diaries, however, indicates that the use of the husband s family name by married women was a much earlier phenomenon in private contexts than in official documents. This dissertation deals with the design, fabrication, and applications of microscale electrospray ionization chips for mass spectrometry. The microchip consists of microchannel, which leads to a sharp electrospray tip. Microchannel contain micropillars that facilitate a powerful capillary action in the channels. The capillary action delivers the liquid sample to the electrospray tip, which sprays the liquid sample to gas phase ions that can be analyzed with mass spectrometry. The microchip uses a high voltage, which can be utilized as a valve between the microchip and mass spectrometry. The microchips can be used in various applications, such as for analyses of drugs, proteins, peptides, or metabolites. The microchip works without pumps for liquid transfer, is usable for rapid analyses, and is sensitive. The characteristics of performance of the single microchips are studied and a rotating multitip version of the microchips are designed and fabricated. It is possible to use the microchip also as a microreactor and reaction products can be detected online with mass spectrometry. This property can be utilized for protein identification for example. Proteins can be digested enzymatically on-chip and reaction products, which are in this case peptides, can be detected with mass spectrometry. Because reactions occur faster in a microscale due to shorter diffusion lengths, the amount of protein can be very low, which is a benefit of the method. The microchip is well suited to surface activated reactions because of a high surface-to-volume ratio due to a dense micropillar array. For example, titanium dioxide nanolayer on the micropillar array combined with UV radiation produces photocatalytic reactions which can be used for mimicking drug metabolism biotransformation reactions. Rapid mimicking with the microchip eases the detection of possibly toxic compounds in preclinical research and therefore could speed up the research of new drugs. A micropillar array chip can also be utilized in the fabrication of liquid chromatographic columns. Precisely ordered micropillar arrays offer a very homogenous column, where separation of compounds has been demonstrated by using both laser induced fluorescence and mass spectrometry. Because of small dimensions on the microchip, the integrated microchip based liquid chromatography electrospray microchip is especially well suited to low sample concentrations. Overall, this work demonstrates that the designed and fabricated silicon/glass three dimensionally sharp electrospray tip is unique and facilitates stable ion spray for mass spectrometry.

The neuronal cell adhesion molecule ICAM-5 ICAM-5 (telencephalin) belongs to the intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-subgroup of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF). ICAMs participate in leukocyte adhesion and adhesion-dependent functions in the central nervous system (CNS) through interacting with the leukocyte-specific b2 integrins. ICAM-5 is found in the mammalian forebrain, appears at the time of birth, and is located at the cell soma and neuronal dendrites. Recent studies also show that it is important for the regulation of immune functions in the brain and for the development and maturation of neuronal synapses. The clinical importance of ICAM-5 is still under investigation; it may have a role in the development of Alzheimer s disease (AD). In this study, the role of ICAM-5 in neuronal differentiation and its associations with a-actinin and N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors were examined. NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are known to be involved in many neuronal functions, including the passage of information from one neuron to another one, and thus it was thought important to study their role related to ICAM-5. The results suggested that ICAM-5 was able to induce dendritic outgrowth through homophilic adhesion (ICAM-5 monomer binds to another ICAM-5 monomer in the same or neighbouring cell), and the homophilic binding activity appeared to be regulated by monomer/multimer transition. Moreover, ICAM-5 binding to a-actinin was shown to be important for neuritic outgrowth. It was examined whether matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are the main enzymes involved in ICAM-5 ectodomain cleavage. The results showed that stimulation of NMDARs leads to MMP activation, cleavage of ICAM-5 and it is accompanied by dendritic spine maturation. These findings also indicated that ICAM-5 and NMDA receptor subunit 1 (NR1) compete for binding to a-actinin, and ICAM-5 may regulate the NR1 association with the actin cytoskeleton. Thus, it is concluded that ICAM-5 is a crucial cell adhesion molecule involved in the development of neuronal synapses, especially in the regulation of dendritic spine development, and its functions may also be involved with memory formation and learning.

The aim of this thesis was to unravel the functional-structural characteristics of root systems of Betula pendula Roth., Picea abies (L.) Karst., and Pinus sylvestris L. in mixed boreal forest stands differing in their developmental stage and site fertility. The root systems of these species had similar structural regularities: horizontally-oriented shallow roots defined the horizontal area of influence, and within this area, each species placed fine roots in the uppermost soil layers, while sinker roots defined the maximum rooting depth. Large radial spread and high ramification of coarse roots, and the high specific root length (SRL) and root length density (RLD) of fine roots indicated the high belowground competitiveness and root plasticity of B. pendula. Smaller radial root spread and sparser branching of coarse roots, and low SRL and RLD of fine roots of the conifers could indicate their more conservative resource use and high association with and dependence on ectomycorrhiza-forming fungi. The vertical fine root distributions of the species were mostly overlapping, implying the possibility for intense belowground competition for nutrients. In each species, conduits tapered and their frequency increased from distal roots to the stem, from the stem to the branches, and to leaf petioles in B. pendula. Conduit tapering was organ-specific in each species violating the assumptions of the general vascular scaling model (WBE). This reflects the hierarchical organization of a tree and differences between organs in the relative importance of transport, safety, and mechanical demands. The applied root model was capable of depicting the mass, length and spread of coarse roots of B. pendula and P. abies, and to the lesser extent in P. sylvestris. The roots did not follow self-similar fractal branching, because the parameter values varied within the root systems. Model parameters indicate differences in rooting behavior, and therefore different ecophysiological adaptations between species.

Tilasto Suomen eläkkeensaajista kunnittain perustuu Eläketurvakeskuksen ja Kansaneläkelaitoksen rekistereihin. Julkaisua on tuotettu vuodesta 1993 lähtien. Tilaston sisältöä on vuosien varrella jonkin verran uudistettu. Tarkempaa tietoa sisältöön kohdistuneista muutoksista on laatuselosteen kohdassa 4 Tilastojen yhtenäisyys ja vertailukelpoisuus sivulla 93. Julkaisu sisältää kuntakohtaista tietoa kaikista työ- ja kansaneläkkeensaajista sekä eläkemenosta. Tietoja on eläkkeensaajien lukumääristä, eläkkeiden suuruuksista sekä kokonaiseläkemenosta. Luokittelijoina ovat mm. eläkelaji, eläkkeensaajan ikä, eläkkeen suuruus ja eläkejärjestelmä. Koko maata koskevaa tietoa löytyy laajemmin julkaisusta Tilasto Suomen eläkkeensaajista, jota on julkaistu vuodesta 1981 lähtien.

Tilasto Suomen eläkkeensaajista perustuu Eläketurvakeskuksen ja Kansaneläkelaitoksen rekistereihin. Julkaisua on tuotettu vuodesta 1981 lähtien. Vuosina 1981–1990 kirja julkaistiin erikseen suomen- ja ruotsinkielisenä. Ruotsinkielinen osa sisälsi suppean englanninkielisen liitteen. Vuodesta 1991 lähtien julkaisu on ollut kolmikielinen. Julkaisu sisältää tietoja kaikista työ- ja kansaneläkkeensaajista, eläkkeelle siirtyneistä ja eläkemenosta. Tietoja on kaikista eläkkeensaajista sekä erikseen Suomessa ja ulkomailla asuvista eläkkeensaajista, poikkeuksena eläkkeelle siirtyneet, joista ei ainakaan toistaiseksi tehdä erillistä tilastoa ulkomailla asuvista. Tilasto on ilmestynyt osana Suomen virallista tilastoa vuodesta 2003 lähtien. Laatuseloste on julkaisun liitteessä 1. Julkaisun alussa on kuvaus eläkejärjestelmästä ja eläke-etuuksista sekä tilastossa käytetyistä käsitteistä. Liitteessä 2 on suppea yhteenveto keskeisistä eläkelainsäädännön muutoksista.

The Witten index can be defined in many supersymmetric theories by formulating them in the space-time R×S3. If the index is nonzero for any value of the radius of S3, it can be shown that the theory does not break supersymmetry in Minkowski space. This approach rules out supersymmetry breaking in a large class of models, chiral and otherwise. The index arguments are consistent with previous instanton calculations which indicate supersymmetry breaking in certain theories.
