This dissertation is the result of an ethnographic journey undertaken in three spiritual centers of Umbanda , located in different districts of Natal/RN. The aim of the study was to understand how the representations of exus (spirit category) are established in the studied religious environment. In order to study this, mythical narratives of songs and of people were analyzed. In addition, the incorporated spirit entities, loaded with codes and values, were possible to be read and understood. The present work was developed according to a theoretical and methodological approach that interprets culture as a constant construction process, with representations and significations. The empirical research focuses on the ethnographic observations and the narratives; providing the experimentation of the models of discursive dialogues and polyphony. It was observed that the studied empirical field is marked by the cult of the Jurema which influences the mythical construction of exus . Therefore, this study enabled a reflection on the meeting of notions of two distinct worlds ( Umbanda and Jurema ). This reflection is crucial to the understanding of the position that exus occupy in the local umbandista system

A Grande Guerra foi o acontecimento ápice de tensões acumuladas entre as potências da Europa ainda no começo da segunda década do século XX. O conflito deflagrado no verão de 1914 expandiu-se e envolveu nações de outros continentes, tornando-o mundial, com repercussões que extrapolaram os mais de quatro anos de batalhas oficiais – atualmente pode-se concluir que a Segunda Guerra Mundial nada mais foi do que a segunda parte de um conflito que não acabou de forma a contentar todos os países beligerantes. Entretanto, a Grande Guerra também demarcou o final de uma era conhecida como belle époque, um tempo que simbolicamente representava o apogeu cultural, econômico e social na Europa, inspirador do modelo civilizador em nações no novo mundo, inclusive no Brasil. Na Amazônia, sobretudo na capital do Estado do Pará, Belém, vivia-se ainda sob o imaginário da era da abundância provocada pela exportação da borracha nativa, cujo inicio ocorreu no final do século XIX e na primeira década do século passado. Nesse cenário, desenvolveu-se um jornalismo forte e muito sintonizado com as questões nacionais, regionais e de além-mar. Formado por intelectuais, políticos e escritores, o jornalismo paraense cobriu de forma sistemática os acontecimentos em torno da Grande Guerra, desde a morte do herdeiro do trono do Império Austro-húngaro, Francisco Ferdinando, até a paz ser selada. Com base neste panorâma, o objetivo desta investigação centra-se no esforço para compreender a natureza da cobertura jornalística dos jornais paraenses acerca da Primeira Guerra Mundial, tendo como objeto de análise três jornais diários que circulavam à época: Estado do Pará, Folha do Norte e A Tarde. Os dois primeiros eram jornais generalistas e de longo período de circulação. O terceiro foi um jornal vespertino, publicado entre setembro de 1915 e setembro de 1916, portanto, de caráter ocasional. Para alcançar esse objetivo, a metodologia usada compreende as análises quantitativa e qualitativa de conteúdo, conforme descrito por Sousa (2006). A primeira parte das análises centra-se em avaliar os dados relativos ao número de peças, de espaços dedicados ao tema da guerra, entre outros aspectos quantificáveis. Na segunda parte usou-se a análise qualitativa com base no estudo do diálogo establecido entre os aspectos da historiografia e os achados jornalísticos nos três jornais.

The railroad, from 1870 and on, becomes an usual complaining in the press s and politician elite s speeches, especially because of Natal s geographic isolation. The implantation of two railroads in the capital territory Estrada de Ferro de Natal a Nova Cruz, afterwards part of Great Western Railway Company network, and Estrada de Ferro Central do Rio Grande do Norte had serious implications in the urban environment. While railroad s structures were already consolidated, other transportation mechanisms were being implanted in the first decades of the 20th century, such as trams lines, which, by the way, was a transport modal that also used rails as a dislocation meaning. Considering these questions, we may ask: how come railroads and tramways demands, roads and buildings had influenced the internal organization of Natal? We work with the general hypothesis that the influence of technical networks, composed by tramways and railroads, over Natal s urban space happened in a diversified way, sometimes consolidating social aspects in certain areas, sometimes improving the occupation of others. The impact over the city s territory also happens in a diversified way between the buildings/railroad s complexes and the pathways. The different scale of the train in comparison to the trams velocity, size, noise level, flow, among others is also a cause to the different consequences in urban environment. The main objective of this work is to understand the role of circulation technical networks in the construction process of urban space in Natal, as a way to contribute to the urban historiography about the subject. The time frame adopted, between 1881 and 1937, marks the time path of railroads and tramways in Rio Grande do Norte: 1881 is the year of railroad s first section inauguration from Natal to São José do Mipibu as well of the railroad complex in the Republic Square in Natal; the year of 1937 marks the beginning of tramways declination process in the city. At this time railroads and tramways had to face more intensively the competition of motor vehicles. The theory reference adopted is based on concepts and analysis of authors, such as Flávio Villaça and Roberto Lobato Corrêa references to the concepts of urban structure , localization and accessibility and Gabriel Dupuy to explain the concept of urban technical networks . These references reveal the conflict of different realities in the urban universe interests and values which is an important factor about the construction of urban space. The information sources used were from two distinctive natures: primary, journals of the time studied and official government reports, and secondary, based on other works about the subject. It was also used by this study iconographic source, especially images from the data base of the research group História da Cidade, do Território e do Urbanismo .

The career of civil engineer Henrique de Novaes, a remarkable figure in the academic, technical and political fields, demonstrates its extensive and relevant work across Brazil in the first half of the twentieth century. It covered from the design of water supply and sewage works, road and rail transport networks, works against drought in the Northeast, hydroelectric and harbor facilities to the urbanization planning and architectural projects, which displays a systematic and multiple production. City and territory conformed to his fields of verification, practical and above all, transformation. The search for understanding of the inclusion of a social actor in this process thus contributes to the specific analysis of the doings of Henrique de Novaes, who graduated at Polytechnic School of Rio de Janeiro in 1906. From a polymorphic activity in different scales, one tries to figure how, through academic education or professional practice, urban history in Brazil can be told or built. The introduction of technological innovations matched the purposes of planning and urban sprawl, as well as met the specifications of regulation and institutionalization of public infrastructure services at the time. The overall plans proposed by the engineer thought of the city as a whole, interconnected to the structural networks. At the same time, the knowledge of a larger physical scale the territory bounces back in the urban in a relationship of reciprocity and completeness. The objective research, therefore, tries to understand the roles played by Henrique de Novaes s works and academic education in the accomplishment of systematic modernization of Brazilian urban space and territory, recovering a little known historical figure by current historiography. It is proposed, as methodological axis, that the study of this professional career configures itself as an essential element for understanding the idea of progress embodied in the technical studies and proposals for improvements and sanitation nationwide in the first half of the twentieth century . The primary sources for the construction of this analysis were technical articles in journals of the period ( Clube de Engenharia , Viação e Revista Brasileira de Engenharia ), and technical reports, government messages, newspaper articles published at the time, autobiographical reports and the engineer s verbal communications with relatives. The work is structured in three chapters: "Biographical traces, academic education and 'technical and political' activities" illustrates the initiation into the technical, public and political environment; Chapter 2, "Technique and territory" outlines his network understanding through sanitation and transport services; Chapter 3 "Technique and City" describes the influence of polytechnics knowledge on the propositions of modernization of cities; Finally, "Final Thoughts: An Evaluation," presents an overview of the affiliations and practice of an engineer in the different scales, and its contribution to the modernization of Brazilian urban and territorial space

Um dos edifícios de tipologia palaciana que se destaca na iconografia da Lisboa antiga corresponde ao desaparecido Palácio dos Câmara, condes de Vila Franca (1583) e de Ribeira Grande (depois de 1662). Situava-se na colina de S. Francisco, uma área de ocupação aristocrática da cidade, frente à igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, a leste do Paço dos Duques de Bragança e a norte do Corpo Santo, onde se erguia perto da margem do Tejo, o também já desaparecido Palácio Corte Real. Porventura ofuscada pela grandiosidade destes imóveis, a historiografia olisiponense não tem prestado a devida atenção ao palácio dos Câmara que, no entanto, deve ser encarado como um dos mais significativos palácios urbanos da primeira metade de seiscentos. Com base no cruzamento de fontes iconográficas, judiciais, administrativas e epistolares, o presente estudo dá conta dos aspetos da encomenda, da autoria e datação envolvidos na sua construção, procurando, acima de tudo, caracterizá-lo do ponto de vista tipológico, espacial e distributivo, por forma a entender as opções arquitetónicas, os padrões de gosto e as vivências do espaço interior protagonizados por um dos mais destacados membros da nobreza titular portuguesa.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo contribuir com a historiografia literária sul-rio-grandense e seu sistema literário, através do resgate da obra impressa por Francisco Xavier Ferreira em sua tipografia e dos registros literários da primeira metade do século XIX publicados no jornal O Noticiador. Ao coletar e analisar esses dados, pode-se divulgar melhor os autores, poemas e outros textos pouco conhecidos da região sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Também é possível certificar a veracidade dos dados biográficos referentes aos autores que publicaram nesse periódico. Reunir os dados esparsos sobre Francisco Xavier Ferreira e seus contemporâneos permite igualmente conhecer melhor a história da imprensa no Rio Grande do Sul, já que esse fundou a primeira tipografia e o primeiro jornal da cidade de Rio Grande. Além dos impressos de 1831 e 1834, o conteúdo literário existente no jornal O Noticiador, publicado de 1831 a 1836, é a fonte primordial para o para entender a inserção da literatura no contexto intelectual da época. Desta forma, busca-se entender a literatura produzida na década de 1830, bem como resgatar o contexto literário da época em que foi produzida.

Oscilando entre a defesa da repressão da saída daqueles que abandonam o seu país em procura de melhores condições de vida, pelos impactos negativos que daí advinham para Portugal, e o reconhecimento de que o desenvolvimento local dependia, quase exclusivamente, das remessas dos emigrantes ou dos que, depois de uma vida de trabalho no exterior, retornavam à sua terra natal, a imprensa regional deve ser entendida, na primeira metade do século XX, como um complexo barómetro das sensibilidades locais relativamente à questão da emigração. Esta ambivalência no posicionamento dos jornais publicados no interior do país face a uma questão sobre a qual o discurso oficial, produzido a partir de Lisboa, apresenta, na generalidade dos casos, uma perspectiva negativa, não tem merecido a devida atenção na historiografia.

Jörn Rüsen influenciou teoricamente a base deste Trabalho de Conclusão de Mestrado, que se propõe apresentar a consciência histórica como substanciação da forma dos seres humanos se corresponderem ao mundo através da relação temporal entre o presente e o passado para prospectar o futuro, sendo tais condições extremamente necessárias à práxis vital. Através disso, o presente trabalho sofreu algumas alterações, pois passou-se a entender que não era relevante analisar o que apresentavam os livros didáticos por si só, mas sim como as pessoas que os liam se orientavam temporalmente através das informações que eles apresentavam. A partir de então, começou-se a refletir algumas questões para a produção desse trabalho, como, por exemplo: 1) Qual seria o público-alvo da pesquisa?; 2) Qual a justificativa para o público-alvo?; 3) Que metodologia usar para extrair as fontes narrativas?; 4) Que materiais utilizar como base informativa ao público-alvo; 5) Como criar um mecanismo coerente para extrair a percepção temporal e significativa do públicoalvo? 6) Quais as significâncias que o público-alvo apresentou sobre o assunto? Deve-se ficar claro que o assunto permaneceu, que é a análise sobre as modificações políticas, intelectuais, religiosas, econômicas, etc., da Inglaterra durante o século XVII, o que mudou foi somente a forma de análise sobre tal assunto.

À margem das apressadas generalizações aristotélicas, este artigo se propõe remastigar o prólogo do poema Sobre a Natureza de Parmênides, em busca de uma compreensão profunda da relação entre a filosofia que nasce e as práticas de katábasis, de descida ao mundo dos mortos. Ocasião para redescobrir a beleza de um diálogo, antigo entre a reflexão filosófica e o vasto mundo da sabedoria em suas formas mais arcaicas. Em 1471 D. Afonso V (1432-1481), rei de Portugal, decidiu voltar ao Norte de África para dar continuidade à política de expansão africana da Coroa. O alvo escolhido foi Arzila e, em Agosto de 1471, a vila foi conquistada por uma hoste portuguesa que contou com 23.000 homens de combate. Pouco estudada pela historiografia, a conquista de Arzila é meritória de um lugar de destaque fruto da sua singularidade. Foi uma campanha meticulosamente planeada que incluiu a compra de toneladas de mantimentos e armas e o recrutamento da maior hoste até então levantada em Portugal. As consequências da queda de Arzila perduraram no tempo: Tânger foi abandonada dias depois e o tratado de tréguas assinado com o sultanato de Fez consolidou presença portuguesa na região, tendo esta permanecido imperturbável até ao início do século XVI, e permitiu a D. Afonso V abandonar de vez os campos de batalha norte-africanos e dar azo às suas ambições castelhanas. O presente estudo insere-se numa lacuna historiográfica face à pouca atenção que a conquista de Arzila granjeou, até ao momento, por parte dos historiadores portugueses. Assim sendo, é estudada não apenas a conquista de Arzila, enquanto acontecimento limitado ao mês de Agosto de 1471, mas também todos os preparativos que foram levados a cabo para permitirem o sucesso da campanha, bem como as consequências da queda de Arzila, mais prolongadas no tempo. Esse estudo é escorado não só nos relatos cronísticos mas também noutras fontes de tipo narrativo e na documentação de chancelaria. É através do cruzamento das várias fontes que é possível detectar e corrigir determinadas lacunas dos cronistas e dos historiadores que os seguiram.
