SÃndrome do Túnel Carpiano (STC) é uma neuropatia compressiva do nervo mediano ao nÃvel da articulação rádio-cubital inferior. Caracteriza-se fisiologicamente pelo aumento da pressão ao nÃvel do canal carpiano o que desencadeia a diminuição da função do nervo a esse nÃvel. Independentemente da fase de evolução da patologia, o indivÃduo apresenta défices motores e sensoriais que interferem com o desempenho dos seus diversos papéis ocupacionais e, concomitantemente, com a sua Qualidade de Vida (QV). Como forma de reduzir esse impacto, existem várias abordagens possÃveis, entre as quais se destaca o uso da tala nocturna de repouso. Este trabalho tem como objectivo principal definir quais os benefÃcios do uso da tala nocturna e o impacto manifesto na QV do indivÃduo com STC. Simultaneamente pretende-se definir em que medida a relação benefÃcio/melhoria da dor e normalização sensitiva se relaciona com o uso da tala. Por último, identificar quais as variáveis sociodemográficas que estão relacionadas ao problema em estudo e aos valores obtidos com as escalas SF-36 e PDI, nos indivÃduos dos grupos controlo e experimental. Para a realização deste estudo, utilizou-se uma amostra de 46 indivÃduos do sexo feminino aos quais aplicouse as escalas referidas anteriormente e os Monofilamentos de Semmes-Weinstein. Os resultados obtidos com o SF-36 revelaram uma maior percepção do estado de saúde no domÃnio Saúde Geral, no grupo ao qual se aplicou a tala, sugerindo que esta intervenção permite uma melhoria da QV. Simultaneamente, o PDI permitiu inferir que a aplicação da tala nocturna tem um impacto positivo no que concerne à percepção do nÃvel da dor nas diversas actividades da vida diária e, consequentemente, na QV. No que se refere à sensibilidade, os resultados obtidos não permitem afirmar que existem melhoras a este nÃvel. Relativamente à s variáveis socio-demográficas, apenas os casos classificados como ligeiros apresentam uma melhor percepção do nÃvel de Saúde Geral o que é sugestivo de que com o evoluir da patologia há perda de QV.

Introdução: O envolvimento respiratório é a principal causa de morbilidade e mortalidade na Fibrose QuÃstica (FQ). Dados pediátricos sobre atividade fÃsica (AF), saturação periférica da oxi-hemoglobina (SpO2) e pico do fluxo da tosse (PFT) são escassos e não padronizados. Objetivos: Avaliar a função pulmonar (FP), AF, SpO2 e PFT, em crianças e adolescentes com FQ, no estado basal e em agudização (AR) e, na fase estável, avaliar a correlação entre as variáveis. Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo observacional prospetivo, com análise de espirometria, podometria, oximetria noturna e PFT, em condições basais. Na AR reavaliaram-se os mesmos parâmetros à s 24-48 horas, 7, 15 e 30 dias, excetuando a AF aos 7 dias. Resultados: Avaliaram-se 8 doentes dos quais dois apresentaram um comprometimento ligeiro da FP e um moderado. A SpO2 foi de 96,2% [95,6; 96,6] e o número médio de passos/dia (NMP) foi de 6369 [4431; 10588]. Todos apresentaram valores do PFT inferiores ao percentil 5 para o género e idade (265 L/min [210; 290]). Apesar de não estatisticamente significativa, a correlação foi moderada entre FEV1 e SpO2 nocturna (rs =0,61; p=0,11); entre PFT e idade (rs=0,69; p=0,06); e entre PFT e capacidade vital forçada (CVF) (rs=0,54; p=0,17). Não se verificou correlação entre FEV1 e idade, NMP e PFT; e entre NMP e idade. No único caso de AR, à exceção da frequência respiratória, verificou-se a diminuição das variáveis à s 24-48h; após 1 mês, a maioria das variáveis aproximou-se ou igualou os valores basais. Conclusão: Os resultados sugerem uma tendência para melhores valores de FEV1 corresponderem a melhores SpO2 noturnas e que, quanto maior a idade e a CVF, maior é o PFT. Não foi possÃvel avaliar o impacto da AR por ter ocorrido apenas um caso.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between physical activity during the second trimester pregnancy and low birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restriction. METHODS: Case-control study including 273 low birth weight newborns and 546 controls carried out in the city of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, in 2005. Low birth weight cases were grouped into two subsamples: preterm birth (n=117) and intrauterine growth restriction (n=134), with their related controls. Information was collected by means of interviews with mothers shortly after birth and transcription of medical records. Data were analyzed using conditional multiple and hierarchical logistic regression. RESULTS: Light physical activity for over 7 hours per day was shown to be protective against low birth weight (adjusted OR=0.61; 95% CI 0.39-0.94) with a dose-response relationship (p-value for trend=0.026). A similar trend was found for intrauterine growth restriction (adjusted OR=0.51; 95% CI 0.26-0.97). Homemaking activities were associated as a protective factor for both low birth weight and preterm birth (p-value for trend=0.013 and 0.035, respectively). Leisure-time walking was found to be protective against preterm birth. CONCLUSIONS: Mild physical activity during the second trimester of pregnancy such as walking has an independent protective effect on low birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restriction.

Este trabalho teve como objectivo o estudo de uma acção de conservação/reabilitação de um edifÃcio, localizado na rua Azevedo Coutinho na zona do Porto. Trata-se, portanto, de um trabalho académico que visa efectuar uma proposta de acções correctivas a implementar num edifÃcio habitacional, onde foram detectadas anomalias. Esta monografia encontra-se dividida em dois capÃtulos, onde, o primeiro faz uma abordagem teórica, muito breve e sucinta, à s matérias correntemente utilizadas no segundo capitulo. Dando também algumas noções e definições de alguns termos utilizados neste ramo da construção. A segunda parte do trabalho consiste no estudo do caso prático do edifÃcio onde serão implementados processos metodológicos definidos no primeiro capÃtulo. De forma a implementar esta metodologia, apresenta-se, então, um edifÃcio construÃdo em meados de 1975, que apresenta ligeiros sinais de degradação que sugerem a uma possÃvel acção de intervenção em alguns dos seus componentes. Sumariamente, pretendeu-se identificar as várias manifestações anómalas do interior e exterior do edifÃcio, procurando associar as mesmas. Neste sentido, esta metodologia fundamenta-se num estudo de documentação técnica, fotográfica e histórica do edifÃcio onde se procurou recolher o mais detalhadamente possÃvel todas as informações essenciais para o estudo, incluindo informações por parte dos seus residentes. Com base neste conjunto de informação foi possÃvel realizar um diagnóstico credÃvel, apesar de não ser completamente conclusivo. Procurou-se listar as possÃveis causas que desencadearam o aparecimento das anomalias, propondo finalmente um conjunto de soluções para a conservação/reabilitação do edifÃcio. Esta proposta de intervenção contempla um conjunto de recomendações, que norteiam a definição de soluções para a conservação/reabilitação do interior do edifÃcio e da sua fachada, de forma a se garantir que as mesmas assegurem resultados satisfatórios a longo prazo.

The tribological response of multilayer micro/nanocrystalline diamond coatings grown by the hot filament CVD technique is investigated. These multigrade systems were tailored to comprise a starting microcrystalline diamond (MCD) layer with high adhesion to a silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic substrate, and a top nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) layer with reduced surface roughness. Tribological tests were carried out with a reciprocating sliding configuration without lubrication. Such composite coatings exhibit a superior critical load before delamination (130–200 N), when compared to the mono- (60–100 N) and bilayer coatings (110 N), considering ∼10 µm thick films. Regarding the friction behaviour, a short-lived initial high friction coefficient was followed by low friction regimes (friction coefficients between 0.02 and 0.09) as a result of the polished surfaces tailored by the tribological solicitation. Very mild to mild wear regimes (wear coefficient values between 4.1×10−8 and 7.7×10−7 mm3 N−1 m−1) governed the wear performance of the self-mated multilayer coatings when subjected to high-load short-term tests (60–200 N; 2 h; 86 m) and medium-load endurance tests (60 N; 16 h; 691 m).

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline and dementia. Earlier diagnosis and classification of different stages of the disease are currently the main challenges and can be assessed by neuroimaging. With this work we aim to evaluate the quality of brain regions and neuroimaging metrics as biomarkers of AD. Multimodal Imaging Brain Connectivity Analysis (MIBCA) toolbox functionalities were used to study AD by T1weighted, Diffusion Tensor Imaging and 18FAV45 PET, with data obtained from the AD Neuroimaging Initiative database, specifically 12 healthy controls (CTRL) and 33 patients with early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late MCI (LMCI) and AD (11 patients/group). The metrics evaluated were gray-matter volume (GMV), cortical thickness (CThk), mean diffusivity (MD), fractional anisotropy (FA), fiber count (FiberConn), node degree (Deg), cluster coefficient (ClusC) and relative standard-uptake-values (rSUV). Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of the most significant metrics and brain regions and expressed as area under the curve (AUC). Comparisons were performed between groups. The RH-Accumbens/Deg demonstrated the highest AUC when differentiating between CTRLEMCI (82%), whether rSUV presented it in several brain regions when distinguishing CTRL-LMCI (99%). Regarding CTRL-AD, highest AUC were found with LH-STG/FiberConn and RH-FP/FiberConn (~100%). A larger number of neuroimaging metrics related with cortical atrophy with AUC>70% was found in CTRL-AD in both hemispheres, while in earlier stages, cortical metrics showed in more confined areas of the temporal region and mainly in LH, indicating an increasing of the spread of cortical atrophy that is characteristic of disease progression. In CTRL-EMCI several brain regions and neuroimaging metrics presented AUC>70% with a worst result in later stages suggesting these indicators as biomarkers for an earlier stage of MCI, although further research is necessary.

Bifunctional Pt-HMOR catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation of various desilicated MOR obtained by alkaline treatment using NaOH concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 M. The zeolite structural changes upon modification were investigated by several techniques including powder X-ray diffraction,Al-27 and Si-29 MAS-NMR spectroscopy, N-2 adsorption, pyridine adsorption followed by infrared spectroscopy and the catalytic model reaction of m-xylene transformation. For low alkaline concentration the zeolite acidity is preserved, along with a slight increase of the volume correspondent to the larger micropores due to the removal of extra-framework debris already existent at the parent zeolite. At higher NaOH concentrations there is a significant loss of crystalinity and acidity as well as the formation of mesoporosity. The characterization of the metal function shows similar patterns for Pt-HMOR and Pt-M/0.1 samples, with Pt particles located mainly inside the inner porosity. In contrast, large Pt particles become visible at the intercrystalline mesoporosity of MOR crystals developed during the desilication treatments at severe alkaline conditions. The catalytic results obtained for n-hexane hydroisomerization showed an improved selectivity for dibranched over monobranched isomers for Pt-M/0.1 sample, likely due to the preservation of the support acidity and the slight enlargement of the micropores. This work is a new example in which the mesoporous development does not improve the catalytic efficiency of the zeolites, whereas mild alkaline desilication might be considered as an effective solution to produce customized catalysts with enhanced performance for a given application. [CoCl(-Cl)(Hpz(Ph))(3)](2) (1) and [CoCl2(Hpz(Ph))(4)] (2) were obtained by reaction of CoCl2 with HC(pz(Ph))(3) and Hpz(Ph), respectively (Hpz(Ph)=3-phenylpyrazole). The compounds were isolated as air-stable solids and fully characterized by IR and far-IR spectroscopy, MS(ESI+/-), elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry (CV), controlled potential electrolysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed that 1 and 2 undergo single-electron irreversible (CoCoIII)-Co-II oxidations and (CoCoI)-Co-II reductions at potentials measured by CV, which also allowed, in the case of dinuclear complex 1, the detection of electronic communication between the Co centers through the chloride bridging ligands. The electrochemical behavior of models of 1 and 2 were also investigated by density functional theory (DFT) methods, which indicated that the vertical oxidation of 1 and 2 (that before structural relaxation) affects mostly the chloride and pyrazolyl ligands, whereas adiabatic oxidation (that after the geometry relaxation) and reduction are mostly metal centered. Compounds 1 and 2 and, for comparative purposes, other related scorpionate and pyrazole cobalt complexes, exhibit catalytic activity for the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone under mild conditions (room temperature, aqueous H2O2). Insitu X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies indicated that the species derived from complexes 1 and 2 during the oxidation of cyclohexane (i.e., Ox-1 and Ox-2, respectively) are analogous and contain a Co-III site. Complex 2 showed low invitro cytotoxicity toward the HCT116 colorectal carcinoma and MCF7 breast adenocarcinoma cell lines.

A series of six new mixed-ligand dinuclear Mn(II, II) complexes of three different hydrazone Schiff bases (H3L1, H3L2 and H3L3), derived from condensation of the aromatic acid hydrazides benzohydrazide, 2-aminobenzohydrazide or 2-hydroxybenzohydrazide, with 2,3-dihydroxy benzaldehyde, respectively, is reported. Reactions of Mn(NO3)(2) center dot 4H(2)O with the H3L1-3 compounds, in the presence of pyridine (1 : 1 : 1 mole ratio), in methanol at room temperature, yield [Mn(H2L1)(py)(H2O)](2)(NO3)(2) center dot 2H(2)O (1 center dot 2H(2)O), [Mn(H2L2)(py)(CH3OH)](2)(NO3)(2) center dot 4H(2)O (2 center dot 4H(2)O) and [Mn(H2L3)(py)(H2O)](2)(NO3)(2) (3) respectively, whereas the use of excess pyridine yields complexes with two axially coordinated pyridine molecules at each Mn(II) centre, viz. [Mn(H2L1)(py)(2)] 2(NO3)(2) center dot H2O (4 center dot H2O), [Mn(H2L2)(py) H-O (6 center dot 2CH(3)OH), respectively. In all the complexes, the (H2L1-3)-ligand coordinates in the keto form. Complexes 1 center dot 2H(2)O, 2 center dot 4H(2)O, 4 center dot H2O, 5 center dot 2H(2)O and 6 center dot 2CH(3)OH are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes 1, 2 and 6, having different coordination environments, have been selected for variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements to examine the nature of magnetic interaction between magnetically coupled Mn(II) centres and also for exploration of the catalytic activity towards microwave assisted oxidation of alcohols. A yield of 81% (acetophenone) is obtained using a maximum of 0.4% molar ratio of catalyst relative to the substrate in the presence of TEMPO and in aqueous basic solution, under mild conditions.

The present study aims to characterize ultrafine particles emitted during gas metal arc welding of mild steel and stainless steel, using different shielding gas mixtures, and to evaluate the effect of metal transfer modes, controlled by both processing parameters and shielding gas composition, on the quantity and morphology of the ultrafine particles. It was found that the amount of emitted ultrafine particles (measured by particle number and alveolar deposited surface area) are clearly dependent from the main welding parameters, namely the current intensity and the heat input of the Welding process. The emission of airborne ultrafine particles increases with the current intensity as fume formation rate does. When comparing the shielding gas mixtures, higher emissions were observed for more oxidizing mixtures, that is, with higher CO2 content, which means that these mixtures originate higher concentrations of ultrafine particles (as measured by number of particles. by cubic centimeter of air) and higher values of alveolar deposited surface area of particles, thus resulting in a more hazardous condition regarding welders exposure.

The reactions between 4'-phenyl-terpyridine (L) and nitrate, acetate or chloride Cu(II) salts led to the formation of [Cu(NO3)(2)L] (1), [Cu(OCOCH3)(2)L]center dot CH2Cl2 (2 center dot CH2Cl2)and [CuCl2L]center dot[Cu(Cl)(mu-Cl)L](2) (3), respectively. Upon dissolving 1 in mixtures of DMSO-MeOH or EtOH-DMF the compounds [Cu(H2O){OS(CH3)(2)}L]-(NO3)(2) (4) and [Cu(HO)(CH3CH2OH)L](NO3) (5) were obtained, in this order. Reaction of 3 with AgSO3CF3 led to [CuCl(OSO2CF3)L] (6). The compounds were characterized by ESI-MS, IR, elemental analysis, electrochemical techniques and, for 2-6, also by single crystal X-ray diffraction. They undergo, by cyclic voltammetry, two single-electron irreversible reductions assigned to Cu(II) -> Cu(I)and Cu(I) -> Cu(0) and, for those of the same structural type, the reduction potential appears to correlate with the summation of the values of the Lever electrochemical EL ligand parameter, which is reported for the first time for copper complexes. Complexes 1-6 in combination with TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl radical) can exhibit a high catalytic activity, under mild conditions and in alkaline aqueous solution, for the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols. Molar yields up to 94% (based on the alcohol) with TON values up to 320 were achieved after 22 h.
