The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of Group Support Systems (GSS) to overall efficiency of innovation process. Overall efficiency was found to be a sum of meeting efficiency, product effectiveness, and learning efficiency. These components were studied in various working situations common in early stages of innovation process. In the empirical part of this study, the suitability of GSS at the forest company was assessed. The basics for this study were idea generation meetings held at LUT and results from the surveys done after the sessions. This data combined with the interviews and theoretical background was used to analyze suitability of this technology to organizational culture at the company. The results of this study are divided to theory and case level. On theory level GSS was found to be a potentially valuable tool for innovation managers, especially at the first stages of the process. On case level, GSS was found to be a suitable tool at Stora Enso for further utilization. A five step implementation proposal was built to illustrate what would be the next stages of GSS implementation, if technology was chosen for further implementation.

Työn tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten käyttötietämystä hyödynnetään prosessisuunnittelussa. Tavoitteena on löytää keinoja parantaa käyttötietämyksen hallintaa suunnitteluprosessin aikana ja selvittää, vaikuttaako tämä prosessisuunnittelun laatuun.Prosessisuunnittelun laatua arvioidaan seitsemällä kriteerillä, jotka ovat investointikustannukset, käyttökustannukset, turvallisuus, ympäristövaikutukset, käytettävyys, innovatiivisuus ja aikataulu. Suunnitteluprosessi jaetaan kolmeen vaiheeseen: esisuunnitteluun, perussuunnitteluun ja detaljisuunnitteluun. Prosessisuunnittelua, investointiprojektia, prosessisuunnittelun laatukriteerejä, suunnitteluprosessin eri vaiheita ja käyttötietämyksen luokittelua tarkastellaan yleisesti. Työssä selvitettiin käyttötietämyksen hyödyntämistä Kemiralla. Aluksi muotoiltiin yleisiä väittämiä käyttötietämyksen hyödyntämisestä Kemiran ulkopuolisten eri alojen asiantuntijoiden haastattelujen perusteella. Tämän jälkeen Kemiran prosessisuunnittelijat arvioivat väittämiä. Arvioiden perusteella tehtiin johtopäätöksiä yleisesti käyttötietämyksen hyödyntämisestä prosessisuunnittelussa. Seuraavaksi haastateltiin kahdessa erityyppisessä case-projektissa mukana olleita henkilöitä ja muotoiltiin yleiset väittämät näihin projekteihin sopiviksi. Projekteissa mukana olleet henkilöt arvioivat väittämiä, ja näiden arvioiden perusteella projekteja vertailtiin keskenään. Lopussa esitetään johtopäätökset kaikkien väittämien arvioiden perusteella. Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että käyttötietämystä voidaan hyödyntää kaikissa suunnittelun vaiheissa, mutta paras hyöty saadaan perus- ja detaljisuunnittelussa. Käyttötietämyksellä voidaan vaikuttaa joihinkin prosessisuunnittelun laatukriteereihin, kuten esimerkiksi käytettävyyteen ja turvallisuuteen enemmän kuin muihin. Kemiralle suositellaan nykyisten tiedonhallintamenetelmien kehittämistä, jotta käyttötietämyksen saatavuus ja sen siirtäminen paranisi. Pr

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää minkälaisia arvojen sisäistämisen esteitä ja edistäjiä organisaatiossa ilmenee ja onko vuorovaikutuksella merkitystä arvojen sisäistämisessä. Case-tutkimuksella selvitän Stora Enson konsernin arvojen sisäistämisen tilaa Anjalan tehtailla sekä pyrin löytämään tutkimustulosten perusteella keinoja ja toimenpide-ehdotuksia arvojen konkretisoimiseksi.Tutkimusmenetelminä käytän kvantitatiivista lomakekyselyä ja kvalitatiivisia puoliksi strukturoituja teemahaastatteluja sekä virtuaalihaastatteluja. Arvojen sisäistämisen esteet organisaatiossa voidaan jakaa neljään ryhmään: arvoprosessin esteisiin, johdon ja esimiesten toimintaan liittyviin esteisiin sekä organisaatioon ja yksilöön liittyviin esteisiin. Arvojen sisäistämisen edistäjät puolestaan painottuvat suurimmaksi osaksi esimies-alais –yhteistoiminnan onnistumiseen. Tärkeimpinä ovat säännölliset kehityskeskustelut, palautteen antaminen, työn- ja vastuunjako, säännölliset osastopalaverit, selkeät tavoitteet, tasapuolisuus, vuorovaikutus ja tiedottaminen, sosiaalinen tuki ja välittäminen. Esimies-alais –toiminnan lisäksi arvot itsessään, organisaatioon liittyvät tekijät sekä osaamispääoman hallinta organisaatiossa toimivat myös arvojen edistäjinä.

Tutkielma rakentui organisaation strategisen johtamisen ja tietojohtamisen teorialle. Tutkielmassa etsittiin niitä malleja, menetelmiä ja toimintatapoja, jotka tukevat tietojohtamisen juurruttamista organisaation toimintaan tavalla, mikä tukee asiantuntijaorganisaation strategisten tavoitteiden toteuttamista, organisaation uudistumista ja asiantuntijaorganisaation kyvykkyyden kehittämistä. Tutkielman empiirisessä osassa kohdeorganisaationa oli Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu. Organisaation kyvykkyyttä toteuttaa valittua strategiaa selvitettiin suorittamalla mittaus KM-factor™ mittarilla. Mittauksessa otoksena oli ammattikorkeakoulun Porvoo-Vantaa -alueyksikön koko henkilöstö. Mittausta täydennettiin organisaatiossa tehdyillä haastatteluilla. Organisaatiossa tehty empiirinen tutkimus ja suoritettu mittaus selvittivät organisaation kyvykkyyttä suoriutua strategian toteuttamisessa suhteessa muissa asiantuntijaorganisaatioissa saatuihin mittaustuloksiin. Tutkielman tietojohtamisen ja strategisen johtamisen teoria ja saatu mittaustulos tukivat käsitystä siitä, että asiantuntijaorganisaatioiden kyvykkyydessä uusiutumiseen löytyy yhteisiä piirteitä. Organisaatiolle valitut toimintatavat, mallit ja menetelmät voivat merkittävästi tukea organisaation innovaatiopotentiaalia. Asiantuntijaorganisaatioissa korostuu tutkielman mukaan kyvykkyys yhteisen näkemyksen ja tavoitetilan juurruttamisessa ja sitä tukevien käytäntöjen omaksumisessa yli organisaatiorajojen.

We propose an innovative, integrated, cost-effective health system to combat major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular, chronic respiratory, metabolic, rheumatologic and neurologic disorders and cancers, which together are the predominant health problem of the 21st century. This proposed holistic strategy involves comprehensive patient-centered integrated care and multi-scale, multi-modal and multi-level systems approaches to tackle NCDs as a common group of diseases. Rather than studying each disease individually, it will take into account their intertwined gene-environment, socio-economic interactions and co-morbidities that lead to individual-specific complex phenotypes. It will implement a road map for predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (P4) medicine based on a robust and extensive knowledge management infrastructure that contains individual patient information. It will be supported by strategic partnerships involving all stakeholders, including general practitioners associated with patient-centered care. This systems medicine strategy, which will take a holistic approach to disease, is designed to allow the results to be used globally, taking into account the needs and specificities of local economies and health systems.

Tässä tutkielmassa tutkitaan, miten luodaan tuloksellisesti toimiva tiedon jakamisen toimintaympäristö, missä virtuaaliyhteisön jäsenet voivat jakaa päivittäiset tiedon jakamisen prosessit ja luoda tietopääomaa. Tämä tutkielma luo kokonaiskäsityksen siitä, mitä tekijöitä tarvitaan ja miten tekijöiden välisellä vuorovaikutuksella luodaan tulokselliset tiedon jakamisen olosuhteet. Toisaalta virtuaaliyhteisöjen jäsenten tulee tietää kriittiset tiedon jakamisen esteet, jotka estävät tiedon jakamisen olosuhteiden kehittymistä. Kirjallisuustutkimukseen perustuen tutkielma esittää, että tuloksellisesti toimivien virtuaaliyhteisöjen tiedon jakamisen toimintaympäristö voidaan luoda tietojohtamisen sosioteknisen lähestymistavan sosioteknisten tasojen ja sosiaalisen pääoman vuorovaikutuksella. Rakentamalla sosiotekniset tasot tietojohtamisen järjestelmiin ja asettamalla ne vuorovaikutukseen sosiaalisen pääoman kanssa kyetään tiedon jakamisen olosuhteisiin myötävaikuttamaan. Samalla tiedon jakamisen esteiden vaikutusta kyetään vähentämään tai poistamaan.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have been performed to understand the way family physicians apply knowledge from medical research in practice. However, very little is known concerning family physicians in Switzerland. In an environment in which information constantly accumulates, it is crucial to identify the major sources of scientific information that are used by family physicians to keep their medical knowledge up to date and barriers to use these sources. Our main objective was to examine medical knowledge translation (KT) practices of Swiss family physicians. METHODS: The population consisted of French- and German-speaking private practice physicians specialised in family medicine. We conducted four interviews and three focus groups (n = 25). The interview guides of the semi-structured interviews and focus groups focused on (a) ways and means used by physicians to keep updated with information relevant to clinical practice; (b) how they consider their role in translating knowledge into practice; (c) potential barriers to KT; (d) solutions proposed by physicians for effective KT. RESULTS: Family physicians find themselves rather ambivalent about the translation of knowledge based on scientific literature, but generally express much interest in KT. They often feel overwhelmed by "information floods" and perceive clinical practice guidelines and other supports to be of limited usefulness for their practice. They often combine various formal and informal information sources to keep their knowledge up to date. Swiss family physicians report considering themselves as artisans, caring for patients with complex needs. CONCLUSION: Improved performance of KT initiatives in family medicine should be tailored to actual needs and based on high quality evidence-based sources.

The aim of this study was to devise a method for computing a composite indicator that measures the regional degree of exposure to external knowledge sources. On the basis of this indicator, we propose a typology of regions according to their potential capacity to access extra-local items of knowledge, which might help them to recombine complementary elements of such an asset to produce a higher number of new ideas. Building on various research streams that have been relatively independent to date, we summarize a non-exhaustive instrumental list of recent studies that motivates our approach and the construction of our complex indicator, which can be used to appraise the extent to which each region is in an optimal position to access external innovative resources.

Value chain collaboration has been a prevailing topic for research, and there is a constantly growing interest in developing collaborative models for improved efficiency in logistics. One area of collaboration is demand information management, which enables improved visibility and decrease of inventories in the value chain. Outsourcing of non-core competencies has changed the nature of collaboration from intra-enterprise to cross-enterprise activity, and this together with increasing competition in the globalizing markets have created a need for methods and tools for collaborative work. The retailer part in the value chain of consumer packaged goods (CPG) has been studied relatively widely, proven models have been defined, and there exist several best practice collaboration cases. The information and communications technology has developed rapidly, offering efficient solutions and applications to exchange information between value chain partners. However, the majority of CPG industry still works with traditional business models and practices. This concerns especially companies operating in the upstream of the CPG value chain. Demand information for consumer packaged goods originates at retailers' counters, based on consumers' buying decisions. As this information does not get transferred along the value chain towards the upstream parties, each player needs to optimize their part, causing safety margins for inventories and speculation in purchasing decisions. The safety margins increase with each player, resulting in a phenomenon known as the bullwhip effect. The further the company is from the original demand information source, the more distorted the information is. This thesis concentrates on the upstream parts of the value chain of consumer packaged goods, and more precisely the packaging value chain. Packaging is becoming a part of the product with informative and interactive features, and therefore is not just a cost item needed to protect the product. The upstream part of the CPG value chain is distinctive, as the product changes after each involved party, and therefore the original demand information from the retailers cannot be utilized as such – even if it were transferred seamlessly. The objective of this thesis is to examine the main drivers for collaboration, and barriers causing the moderate adaptation level of collaborative models. Another objective is to define a collaborative demand information management model and test it in a pilot business situation in order to see if the barriers can be eliminated. The empirical part of this thesis contains three parts, all related to the research objective, but involving different target groups, viewpoints and research approaches. The study shows evidence that the main barriers for collaboration are very similar to the barriers in the lower part of the same value chain; lack of trust, lack of business case and lack of senior management commitment. Eliminating one of them – the lack of business case – is not enough to eliminate the two other barriers, as the operational model in this thesis shows. The uncertainty of the future, fear of losing an independent position in purchasing decision making and lack of commitment remain strong enough barriers to prevent the implementation of the proposed collaborative business model. The study proposes a new way of defining the value chain processes: it divides the contracting and planning process into two processes, one managing the commercial parts and the other managing the quantity and specification related issues. This model can reduce the resistance to collaboration, as the commercial part of the contracting process would remain the same as in the traditional model. The quantity/specification-related issues would be managed by the parties with the best capabilities and resources, as well as access to the original demand information. The parties in between would be involved in the planning process as well, as their impact for the next party upstream is significant. The study also highlights the future challenges for companies operating in the CPG value chain. The markets are becoming global, with toughening competition. Also, the technology development will most likely continue with a speed exceeding the adaptation capabilities of the industry. Value chains are also becoming increasingly dynamic, which means shorter and more agile business relationships, and at the same time the predictability of consumer demand is getting more difficult due to shorter product life cycles and trends. These changes will certainly have an effect on companies' operational models, but it is very difficult to estimate when and how the proven methods will gain wide enough adaptation to become standards.

In this paper we seek to verify the hypothesis that trust and cooperation between individuals, and between them and public institutions, can encourage technological innovation and the adoption of knowledge. Additionally, we test the extent to which the interaction of social capital with human capital and R&D expenditures improve their effect on a region’s ability to innovate. Our empirical evidence is taken from the Spanish regions and employs a knowledge production function and longitudinal count data models. Our results suggest that social capital correlates positively with innovation. Further, our analysis reveals a powerful interaction between human and social capital in the production of knowledge, whilst the complementarity with R&D efforts would seem less clear.

Globalization has increased transport aggregates’ demand. Whilst transport volumes increase, ecological values’im portance has sharpened: carbon footprint has become a measure known world widely. European Union together with other communities emphasizes friendliness to the environment: same trend has extended to transports. As a potential substitute for road transport is noted railway transport, which decreases the congestions and lowers the emission levels. Railway freight market was liberalized in the European Union 2007, which enabled new operators to enter the markets. This research had two main objectives. Firstly, it examined the main market entry strategies utilized and the barriers to entry confronted by the operators who entered the markets after the liberalization. Secondly, the aim was to find ways the governmental organization could enhance its service towards potential railway freight operators. Research is a qualitative case study, utilizing descriptive analytical research method with a normative shade. Empirical data was gathered by interviewing Swedish and Polish railway freight operators by using a semi-structured theme-interview. This research provided novel information by using first-hand data; topic has been researched previously by utilizing second-hand data and literature analyses. Based on this research, rolling stock acquisition, needed investments and bureaucracy generate the main barriers to entry. The research results show that the mostly utilized market entry strategies are start-up and vertical integration. The governmental organization could enhance the market entry process by organizing courses, paying extra attention on flexibility, internal know-how and educating the staff.

This study aims at enhancing understanding and deriving new constructs about the management of intellectual capital in the early phases of project marketing. The research methodology employed is deductive; conceptual reasoning is based on existing literature. The study's knowledge base is drawn from the bodies of literature dealing with project, relationship, and industrial marketing, as well as from the literature dealing with mechanical engineering, network approach, systems selling, R&D, project portfolio, strategic, financial, and knowledge management. As a result, three processes, 32 summaries and 19 conclusions give to the management of intellectual capital meaning in the context of project marketing. These conclusions and synthesis are proposed to improve the existing concepts and models in project marketing.

This study has been made for specific paper production line at an international forest industry company in Finland. The main purpose for the study was a need to examine the current situation of the customer knowledge and its’ sharing at case production line, recognize the problems in it and finally, find out the improvement actions. The study is composed of theoretical and empirical parts. In theoretical part, knowledge management and information sharing in addition to customer knowledge management are presented. Empirical data from case production line was collected by using survey questionnaires. The results are analyzed in discussion and conclusions and finally, study ends with summary which includes recommendations. Based on the study, the amount and quality of customer knowledge and gaining and transferring the customer knowledge were found as the main challenges. The proposed solutions were discovered from moving towards more dynamic operating environment and in the area of customer knowledge management, especially from the communities of creation.

Aim of the Thesis is to study and understand the theoretical concept of Metanational corporation and understand how the Web 2.0 technologies can be used to support the theory. Empiric part of the study compares the theory to the case company’s current situation Goal of theoretical framework is to show how the Web 2.0 technologies can be used in the three levels of the Metanational corporation. In order to do this, knowledge management and more accurately knowledge transferring is studied to understand what is needed from the Web 2.0 technologies in the different functions and operations of the Metanational corporation. Final synthesis of the theoretical framework is to present a model where the Web 2.0 technologies are placed on the levels of the Metanational corporation. Empirical part of the study is based on interviews made in the case company. Aim of the interviews is to understand the current state of the company related to the theoretical framework. Based on the interviews, the differences between the theoretical concept and the case company are presented and studied. Finally the study presents the found problem areas, and where the adoption of the Web 2.0 tools is seen as beneficiary, based on the interviews and theoretical framework.
