Classification of neocortical interneurons using affinity propagation

In spite of over a century of research on cortical circuits, it is still unknown how many classes of cortical neurons exist. Neuronal classification has been a difficult problem because it is unclear what a neuronal cell class actually is and what are the best characteristics are to define them. Recently, unsupervised classifications using cluster analysis based on morphological, physiological or molecular characteristics, when applied to selected datasets, have provided quantitative and unbiased identification of distinct neuronal subtypes. However, better and more robust classification methods are needed for increasingly complex and larger datasets. We explored the use of affinity propagation, a recently developed unsupervised classification algorithm imported from machine learning, which gives a representative example or exemplar for each cluster. As a case study, we applied affinity propagation to a test dataset of 337 interneurons belonging to four subtypes, previously identified based on morphological and physiological characteristics. We found that affinity propagation correctly classified most of the neurons in a blind, non-supervised manner. In fact, using a combined anatomical/physiological dataset, our algorithm differentiated parvalbumin from somatostatin interneurons in 49 out of 50 cases. Affinity propagation could therefore be used in future studies to validly classify neurons, as a first step to help reverse engineer neural circuits.

Observations on the purse-seine fishery for Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Eastern Pacific Ocean

ENGLISH: This report presents information on the fishery for bluefin in the northeastern Pacific Ocean derived from purse seiner logbook records and landing statistics. Information on the size composition of the fish in the catch is also presented. The logbook records cover the period 19611980; however, catch statistics and length-frequency data from previous years are also presented. SPANISH: Este informe presenta los datos sobre la pesca del T. thynnus en el Océano Pacífico nordeste, obtenidos de los cuadernos de bitácora de los barcos cerqueros y de las estadísticas de desembarque. Se presenta además la información sobre la composición de talla de los peces en la captura. Los registros de bitácora abarcan el período de 1961 a 1980; no obstante, se presentan además las estadísticas de captura y los datos de la frecuencia de talla de años anteriores. [ES] El programa de cooperación transnacional del Suroeste Europeo aporta la oportunidad de contrastar la situación que atraviesan los espacios periurbanos de cuatro áreas metropolitanas y plantear toda una serie de recomendaciones para su correcta ordenación. Tras varias décadas de crecimiento urbano intenso se observa la dificultad que tienen los documentos de ordenación para regularlo y dirigirlo en los límites de la ciudad. Tan sólo las figuras de protección de espacios naturales aportan ciertas garantías de preservar determinados entornos. Las propuestas se concretan en la necesidad de resaltar el valor natural, de ocio y agrario del medio rural próximo. También se incide en la necesidad de acometer la ordenación de este espacio utilizando una metodología diferente, la mirada invertida, con el objeto de conseguir mayor consenso y respeto a las propuestas de todas las partes.

The past history and present trends in the fisheries of Lake Chad

Lake Chad is a very large, shallow eutrophic lake shared by Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroun. It supplies approximately 13% of Nigeria's inland fish. It however lies in an unstable ecological environment characterised by intermittent period of rainfall and drought. This creates a very large draw down area. Consequently, the fisheries are affected by the oscillation in the size of lake due to the drought. Other factors affecting the volume of water are the numerous dams on the inflow rivers. The fishery is also subjected to intense overfishing and may be affected by pollution and other land use practices. The paper discusses changes that took place over the years as a result of the factors of drought, effect of dams on the inflow rivers. Previous records of fish production, species composition and distribution, the status of the fish stocks, their sizes are compared with more recent data. Suggestion for a national exploitation of the lake based on habitat improvement, increasing the volume of the water in the lake through controlled use of the influent rivers as well as reduction in overfishing are made
