Jiao Tong: A Grounded Theory of Chinese International Students' Transition to American Tertiary Education

University students are more globally mobile than ever before, increasingly receiving education outside of their home countries. One significant student exchange pattern is between China and the United States; Chinese students are the largest population of international students in the U.S. (Institute of International Education, 2014). Differences between Chinese and American culture in turn influence higher education praxis in both countries, and students are enculturated into the expectations and practices of their home countries. This implies significant changes for students who must navigate cultural differences, academic expectations, and social norms during the process of transition to a system of higher education outside their home country. Despite the trends in students’ global mobility and implications for international students’ transitions, scholarship about international students does not examine students’ experiences with the transition process to a new country and system of higher education. Related models were developed with American organizations and individuals, making it unlikely that they would be culturally transferable to Chinese international students’ transitions. This study used qualitative methods to deepen the understanding of Chinese international students’ transition processes. Grounded theory methods were used to invite the narratives of 18 Chinese international students at a large public American university, analyze the data, and build a theory that reflects Chinese international students’ experiences transitioning to American university life. Findings of the study show that Chinese international students experience a complex process of transition to study in the United States. Students’ pre-departure experiences, including previous exposure to American culture, family expectations, and language preparation, informed their transition. Upon arrival, students navigate resource seeking to fulfill their practical, emotional, social, intellectual, and ideological needs. As students experienced various positive and discouraging events, they developed responses to the pivotal moments. These behaviors formed patterns in which students sought familiarity or challenge subsequent to certain events. The findings and resulting theory provide a framework through which to better understand the experiences of Chinese international students in the context of American higher education.

Evaluation of GFP Tag as a Screening Reporter in Directed Evolution of a Hyperthermophilic beta-Glucosidase

By applying a directed evolution methodology specific enzymatic characteristics can be enhanced, but to select mutants of interest from a large mutant bank, this approach requires high throughput screening and facile selection. To facilitate such primary screening of enhanced clones, an expression system was tested that uses a green fluorescent protein (GFP) tag from Aequorea victoria linked to the enzyme of interest. As GFP`s fluorescence is readily measured, and as there is a 1:1 molar correlation between the target protein and GFP, the concept proposed was to determine whether GFP could facilitate primary screening of error-prone PCR (EPP) clones. For this purpose a thermostable beta-glucosidase (BglA) from Fervidobacterium sp. was used as a model enzyme. A vector expressing the chimeric protein BglA-GFP-6XHis was constructed and the fusion protein purified and characterized. When compared to the native proteins, the components of the fusion displayed modified characteristics, such as enhanced GFP thermostability and a higher BglA optimum temperature. Clones carrying mutant BglA proteins obtained by EPP, were screened based on the BglA/GFP activity ratio. Purified tagged enzymes from selected clones resulted in modified substrate specificity.

Perfectionism and sensory phenomena: phenotypic components of obsessive-compulsive disorder

Background: The aim of the study was to investigate how perfectionism and sensory phenomena (SP) interact as possible phenotypic components of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods: Forty-seven adult outpatients, meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria for OCD, and a control group of 41 community subjects were assessed using the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FM PS), the University of Sao Paulo-Sensory Phenomena Scale, and other standard measures of OCD severity. Results: Three of the FMPS subscales (""concern over mistakes,"" ""doubts about action,"" and ""parental criticism"") were significantly different between OCD patients and control subjects. All subtypes of SP were significantly more frequent and more severe in OCD than in control subjects. The ""incompleteness"" subtype of SP was associated with high scores on all dimensions of the FMPS, whereas the ""just-right"" subtype of SP was only associated with ""doubts about action,"" ""personal standards,"" and ""organization"" subscales of the FMPS. Conclusions: Presence and severity of SP and specific elements of perfectionism clearly distinguish OCD patients from healthy control subjects. Some SP subtypes are associated with specific FPMS subscale scores, whereas others are not. These results emphasize the relevance of assessing different subtypes of perfectionism and SP in OCD patients as important subcomponents of the OCD phenotype. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Resumo I (Prática Pedagógica)- Este Relatório de Estágio é composto por duas secções. Na primeira descreve-se o estágio realizado pela mestranda, na Classe de Flauta do Professor João Pereira Coutinho (JPC), na Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional (EMCN), ao longo do ano lectivo de 2012/2013, com a supervisão do Professor Nuno Ivo Cruz. Após uma contextualização da EMCN e dos alunos acompanhados no estágio, descreve-se o desempenho de cada um deles, ao longo do ano lectivo, bem como as práticas educativas desenvolvidas pelo Professor Cooperante, nas aulas assistidas, e as desenvolvidas pela estagiária. Realiza-se uma reflexão sobre as mesmas,apresentando, também, algumas vantagens e desvantagens relativamente ao modelo de Estágio proposto.
