Correlations between Si nanocrystal (nc-Si) related photoluminescence (PL), Er3+ emission and nonradiative defects in the Er-doped SiO2 films containing nc-Si (SRSO) are studied. Upon 514.5 nm laser excitation the erbium-doped SRSO samples exhibit PL peaks at around 0.8 and 1.54 mum, which can be assigned to the electron-hole recombination in nc-Si and the intra-4f transition in Er3+, respectively. With increasing Er3+ content in the films, Er3+ emission becomes intense while the PL at 0.8 mum decreases, suggesting a strong coupling of nc-Si and Er 31 ions. Hydrogen plasma treatment for the samples improve the PL intensities of the 0.8 and 1.54 mum bands, indicating H passivation for the nonradiative defects existing in the samples. Further-more, from the effect of hydrogen treatment for the samples, we observe variation of the number of nonradiative defects with annealing temperatures. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Er-doped silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN) films were deposited on silicon substrate by an RF magnetron reaction sputtering system. After high temperature annealing, the films show intense photoluminescence in both the visible and infrared regions. Besides broad-band luminescence centered at 780 nm which originates from silicon nanocrystals, resolved peaks due to transitions from all high energy levels up to ~2H_(11/2) to the ground state of Er~(3+) are observed. Raman spectra and HRTEM measurements have been performed to investigate the structure of the films, and possible excitation processes are discussed.

SiOx films with oxygen concentrations ranging 13-46 at.% were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique using: pure SiH4 and N2O mixture. Erbium was then implanted at an energy of 500 KeV with dose of 2x10(15) ions/cm(2). The samples were subsequently annealed in N-2 for 20 sec at temperatures of (300-950 degrees C). Room temperature (RT) photo-luminescence (PL) data were collected by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIS) with an argon laser at a wavelength of 514.5 nm and an output power from 5 to 2500 mw. The intense room-temperature luminescence was observed around 1.54 mu m. The luminescence intensity increases by 2 orders of magnitude as compared with that of Er-doped Czochralski (CZ) Si. We found that the Er3+ luminescence depends strongly on the SiOx microstructure. Our experiment also showed that the silicon grain radius decreased with increasing oxygen content and finally formed micro-crystalline silicon or nano-crystalline silicon. As a result, these silicon small particles could facilitate the energy transfer to Er3+ and thus enhanced the photoluminescence intensity.

Silica glass samples were implanted with 1.157 GeV Fe-56 and 1.755 GeV Xe-136 ions to fluences range from 1 x 10(11) to 3.8 x 10(12) ions/cm(2). Virgin and irradiated samples were investigated by ultraviolet (UV) absorption from 3 to 6.4 eV and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The UV absorption investigation reveals the presence of various color centers (E' center, non-bridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC) and ODC(II)) appearing in the irradiated samples. It is found that the concentration of all color centers increase with the increase of fluence and tend to saturation at high fluence. Furthermore the concentration of E' center and that of NBOHC is approximately equal and both scale better with the energy deposition through processes of electronic stopping, indicating that E' center and NBOHC are mainly produced simultaneously from the scission of strained Si-O-Si bond by electronic excitation effects in heavy ion irradiated silica glass. The PL measurement shows three emissions peaked at about 4.28 eV (alpha band), 3.2 eV (beta band) and 2.67 eV (gamma band) when excited at 5 eV. The intensities of alpha and gamma bands increase with the increase of fluence and tend to saturation at high fluence. The intensity of beta band is at its maximum in virgin silica glass and it is reduced on increasing the ions fluence. It is further confirmed that nuclear energy loss processes determine the production of alpha and gamma bands and electronic energy loss processes determine the bleaching of beta band in heavy ion irradiated silica glass. [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)-doped silica (RuSi) nanoparticles were synthesized by using a water/oil microemulsion method. Stable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was obtained when the RuSi nanoparticles were immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode by using tripropylamine (TPA) as a coreactant. Furthermore, the ECL of the RuSi nanoparticles with layer-by-layer biomolecular coatings was investigated. Squential self-assembly of the polyelectrolytes and biomolecules on the RuSi nanoparticles gave nanocomposite suspensions, the ECL of which decreased on increasing the number of bilayers.

Spherical Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-doped silica (RuSi) nanoparticles were prepared via a water-in-oil microemulsion approach. The electrochemical and electrochemiluminescent properties of the RuSi nanoparticles immobilized on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode were investigated. Further, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the RuSi nanoparticles with covalently coated biomacromolecules was studied. By covalent cross-linking with glutaraldehyde, gamma-(aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES)-pretreated RuSi nanoparticles were coupled with different concentrations of bovine serum albumin (BSA), hemoglobin, and myoglobin, respectively.

A large-scale process combined sonication with self-assembly techniques for the preparation of high-density gold nanoparticles supported on a [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)-doped silica/Fe3O4 nanocomposite (GNRSF) is provided. The obtained hybrid nanomaterials containing Fe3O4 spheres have high saturation magnetization, which leads to their effective immobilization on the surface of an ITO electrode through simple manipulation by an external magnetic field (without the need of a special immobilization apparatus). Furthermore, this hybrid nanomaterial film exhibits a good and very stable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior, which gives a linear response for tripropylamine (TPA) concentrations between 5 mu m and 0.21 mM, with a detection limit in the micromolar range. The sensitivity of this ECL sensor can be easily controlled by the amount of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) immobilized on the hybrid nanomaterials (that is, varying the amount of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) during GNRSF synthesis).

An approach was reported to synthesize silica hybridized ruthenium bipyridyl complex through amidation reaction by covalent attachment of bis(bipyridyl)-4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridyl-ruthenium to (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane. The hybrid complex then was gelatinized through acid catalytic hydrolysis method and a sol-gel modified indium, tin oxide electrode was prepared via spin coating technique. As prepared indium tin oxide electrode possesses good stability therein with excellent electrochemiluminescence behavior.
