The oxidation of C.I. Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) by photo-Fenton process mediated by lerrioxalate was investigated under artificial and solar irradiation. The RB4 degradation in acidic medium (pH 2.5) was evaluated by the decrease in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content and color, measured by the decrease in chromophore absorption band (600 nm). The influence of ferrioxalate and H2O2 concentrations on the dye degradation was studied and best results were obtained using 1.0 mM ferrioxalate and 10 nM of hydrogen peroxide. Under these experimental conditions, 80% of TOC and 100% of color removal were obtained for a 0.1 mM RB4 dye in 35 min of solar irradiation. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The new complex [Cu(NCS)(2)(pn)] (1) (pn = 1,3-propanediamine) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and electronic spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that complex 1 is made up of neutral [Cu(NCS)(2)(pn)] units which are connected by mu-1,3,3-thiocyanato groups to yield a 2D metal-organic framework with a brick-wall network topology. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the type NH...SCN and NH...NCS are also responsible for the stabilization of the crystal structure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present atomic force microscopic images of the interphase morphology of vertically segregated thin films spin coated from two-component mixtures of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MEH-PPV) and polystyrene (PS). We investigate the mechanism leading to the formation of wetting layers and lateral structures during spin coating using different PS molecular weights, solvents and blend compositions. Spinodal decomposition competes with the formation of surface enrichment layers. The spinodal wavelength as a function of PS molecular weight follows a power-law similar to bulk-like spinodal decomposition. Our experimental results indicate that length scales of interface topographical features can be adjusted from the nanometer to micrometer range. The importance of controlled arrangement of semiconducting polymers in thin film geometries for organic optoelectronic device applications is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, electrochemical and photo-assisted electrochemical processes are used for color, total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation of one of the most abundant and strongly colored industrial wastewaters, which results from the dyeing of fibers and fabrics in the textile industry. The experiments were carried out in an 18L pilot-scale tubular low reactor with 70% TiO2/30% RuO2 DSA. A synthetic acid blue 40 solution and real dye house wastewater, containing the same dye, were used for the experiments. By using current density of 80 mA cm(-2) electrochemical process has the capability to remove 80% of color, 46% of TOC and 69% of COD. When used the photochemical process with 4.6 mW cm(-2) of 254nm UV-C radiation to assist the electrolysis, has been obtained 90% of color, 64% of TOC and 60% of COD removal in 90 minutes of processing; furthermore, 70% of initial color was degraded within the first 15 minutes. Experimental runs using dye house wastewater resulted in 78% of color, 26% of TOC and 49% of COD in electrolysis at 80 mA cm(-2) and 90 min; additionally, when photo-assisted, electrolysis resulted in removals of 85% of color, 42% of TOC and 58% of COD. For the operational conditions used in this study, color, TOC and COD showed pseudo-first-order decaying profiles. Apparent rate constants for degradation of TOC and COD were improved by one order of magnitude when the photo-electrochemical process was used.

This work illustrates the advantages of using p-polarized radiation at an incidence angle of 70 degrees in contrast to the conventional unpolarized beam at normal (or near-normal) incidence for the infrared spectroscopic study of polycarbosilane, polysilazane and polysiloxane thin films synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and subsequently irradiated with 170 keV He+ ions at fluences from 1 x 10(14) to 1 x 10(16) cm(-2). Several bands not seen using the conventional mode could be observed in the polarized mode. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Er-doped SnO2 thin films, obtained by sol-gel-dip-coating technique, were submitted to excitation with the 4th harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (266 nm), at low temperature, and a conductivity decay is observed when the illumination is removed. This decay is modeled by considering a thermally activated cross section of an Er-related trapping center. Besides, grain boundary scattering is considered as dominant for electronic mobility. X-ray diffraction data show a characteristic profile of nanoscopic crystallite material (grain average size approximate to 5 nm) in agreement with this model. Temperature dependent and concentration dependent decays are measured and the capture barrier is evaluated from the model, yielding 100 meV for SnO2:0.1% Er and 148 meV for SnO2:4% Er.

We report on light-emitting devices based on a green-phosphor compound (Mn-doped zinc silicate, Zn2SiO4: Mn) dispersed in a conductive polymeric blend (poly-o-methoxyaniline/polyvinylene fluoride, POMA/PVDF-TrFE). The devices exhibited high luminance in the green, good stability and homogeneous brilliance over effective areas up to 5 cm(2). The electroluminescence (EL) spectrum presented essentially the same characteristics as the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence spectra, indicating that the light emission originates from decay of the same excited species, regardless of the excitation source. Operating characteristics were analyzed with current density - voltage (J - V) and luminance voltage ( L - V) curves to investigate the nature of the electroluminescence of the active material, which is still not completely understood.

The red Fe2+-phenanthroline complex is the basis of a classical spectrophotometric method for determination of iron. Due to the toxicity of this complexing agent, direct disposal of the wastewaters generated in analytical laboratories is not environmentally safe. This work evaluates the use of the solar photo-Fenton process for the treatment of laboratory wastewaters containing phenanthroline. Firstly, the degradation of phenanthroline in water was evaluated at two concentration levels (0.1 and 0.01%, w/v) and the efficiencies of degradation using ferrioxalate (FeOx) and ferric nitrate were compared. The 0.01% w/v solution presented much higher mineralization, achieving 82% after 30 min of solar irradiation with both iron sources. The solar photo-Fenton treatment of laboratory wastewater containing, in addition to phenanthroline, other organic compounds such as herbicides and 4-chlorophenol, equivalent to 4500 mg L-1 total organic carbon (TOC) resulted in total degradation of phenanthroline and 25% TOC removal after 150 min, in the presence of either FeOx or ferric nitrate. A ratio of 1: 10 dilution of the residue increased mineralization in the presence of ferrioxalate, achieving 38% TOC removal after 120 min, while use of ferric nitrate resulted in only 6% mineralization over the same period. [GRAPHICS]This work proposes a combined swelling-electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) approach aiming at determining some unusual polymer solvation parameters relevant for chemical processes occurring inside beads. Batches of benzhydrylamine-resin (BHAR), a copolymer of styrene-1% divinylbenzene containing phenylmethylamine groups were, labeled with the paramagnetic amino acid 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-4-amine-4-carboxylic acid (TOAC), and their swelling properties and EPR spectra were examined in DCM and DMF. By taking into account the BHARs labeling degrees, the corresponding swelling values, and some polymer structural characteristics, it was possible to calculate polymer swelling parameters, among them, the volume and the number of sites per bead, site-site distances and site concentration. The latter values ranged from 17 to 170 angstrom and from 0.4 to 550 mM, respectively. EPR spectroscopy was applied to validate the multistep calculation strategy of these swelling parameters. Spin-spin interaction was detected in the labeled resins at site-site distances less than approximately 60 A or probe concentrations higher than approximately 1 x 10(-2) M, in close agreement with the values obtained for the spin probe free in solution. Complementarily, the yield of coupling reactions in different resins indicated that the greater the inter-site distance or the lower the site concentration, the faster the reaction. The results suggested that the model and the experimental measurements developed for the determination of solvation parameters represent a relevant step forward for the deeper understanding and improvement of polymer-related processes.

Investigations of photo-induced structural transformations (PST) and related changes of optical parameters in the light-sensitive amorphous chalcogenides were extended to composite layers, which consist of a wide band-gap material and an active material, Se60Te40 with a smaller band gap. Photo-stimulated interdiffusion and/or crystallization in layered Se0.6Tc0.4/As0.6Se0.94 and Se0.6Te0.4/SiOx were investigated with respect to their dependence on the compositional modulation of the multilayer at scale-dimensions (similar to3-10nm). It was established that PST due to the interdiffusion and crystallization can be efficiently operated by the composition of the adjacent layers of the multilayer which results in the change of the transformation rate and of the optical relief type (positive or negative). The comparison with a single Se0.6Te0.4 layer and with the known data for amorphous-Se/As2S3 multilayers supports the advantages of composite layers for amplitude-phase optical recording. The present paper focuses on the structural, electronic, and compositional properties of Ge25Ga10S65 glasses before and after UV illumination in air using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. The XPS Ge 3d spectra reveal the existence of Ge-O bonds in the surface region of illuminated glass. In the case of this sample, XAS O K-edge spectra showed the formation of an enriched region of oxygen atoms in the glass bulk, indicating a different bonding structure of oxygen at the surface and in the bulk of the glass. Moreover, the structural changes that occur after UV illumination in the glass sample are identified as the formation of a homogeneous germanium oxide surface layer followed by an intermediary Ge25Ga10S65-yOz subsurface region. The degradation of herbicides in aqueous solution by photo-Fenton process using ferrioxalate complex (FeOx) as source of Fe2+ was evaluated under blacklight irradiation. The commercial products of the herbicides tebuthiuron, diuron and 2,4-D were used. The multivariate analysis, more precisely, the response surface methodology was applied to evaluate the role of FeOx and hydrogen peroxide concentrations as variables in the degradation process, and in particular, to define the concentration ranges that result in the most efficient degradation of the herbicides. The degradation process was evaluated by the determination of the remaining total organic carbon content (TOC), by monitoring the decrease of the concentrations of the original compounds using HPLC and by the chloride ion release in the case of diuron and 2,4-D. Under optimized conditions, 20min were sufficient to mineralize 93% of TOC from 2,4-D and 90% of diuron, including oxalate. Complete dechlorination of these compounds was achieved after 10 min reaction. It was found that the most recalcitrant herbicide is tebuthiuron, while diuron shows the highest degradability. However, under optimized conditions the initial concentration of tebuthiuron was reduced to less than 15%, while diuron and 2,4-D were reduced to around 2% after only 1 min reaction. Furthermore, it was observed that the ferrioxalate complex plays a more important role than H2O2 in the photodegradation of these herbicides in the ranges of concentrations investigated.
