ABSTRACT The impact of intensive management practices on the sustainability of forest production depends on maintenance of soil fertility. The contribution of forest residues and nutrient cycling in this process is critical. A 16-year-old stand of Pinus taeda in a Cambissolo Húmico Alumínico léptico (Humic Endo-lithic Dystrudept) in the south of Brazil was studied. A total of 10 trees were sampled distributed in five diameter classes according to diameter at breast height. The biomass of the needles, twigs, bark, wood, and roots was measured for each tree. In addition to plant biomass, accumulated plant litter was sampled, and soil samples were taken at three increments based on sampling depth: 0.00-0.20, 0.20-0.40, 0.40-0.60, 0.60-1.00, 1.00-1.40, 1.40-1.80, and 1.80-1.90 m. The quantity and concentration of nutrients, as well as mineralogical characteristics, were determined for each soil sample. Three scenarios of harvesting intensities were simulated: wood removal (A), wood and bark removal (B), and wood + bark + canopy removal (C). The sum of all biomass components was 313 Mg ha-1.The stocks of nutrients in the trees decreased in the order N>Ca>K>S>Mg>P. The mineralogy of the Cambissolo Húmico Alumínico léptico showed the predominance of quartz sand and small traces of vermiculite in the silt fraction. Clay is the main fraction that contributes to soil weathering, due to the transformation of illite-vermiculite, releasing K. The depletion of nutrients from the soil biomass was in the order: P>S>N>K>Mg>Ca. Phosphorus and S were the most limiting in scenario A due to their low stock in the soil. In scenario B, the number of forest rotations was limited by N, K, and S. Scenario C showed the greatest reduction in productivity, allowing only two rotations before P limitation. It is therefore apparent that there may be a difference of up to 30 years in the capacity of the soil to support a scenario such as A, with a low nutrient removal, compared to scenario C, with a high nutrient removal. Hence, the effect of different harvesting intensities on nutrient availability may jeopardize the sustainability of P. taeda in the short-term.

ABSTRACT The number of days between anthesis and maturation of conilon coffee berries varies according to the genotype. Thus, it is believed that periods of greater nutrient demand for fruit formation also vary according to the genotype, directly influencing fertilizer management. The goal of this study was to establish accumulation curves for the micronutrients boron, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc in conilon coffee trees with different maturation cycles. The experiment was conducted in Nova Venécia, State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, during the reproductive cycle of the 2010/2011 crop year. Four coffee genotypes with different maturation cycles (early, intermediate, late, and super-late) were studied. A completely randomized experimental design was used with five replications. The treatments correspond to the accumulation of B, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in the berries every 28 days in the period from flowering to harvest. The early, intermediate, and late genotypes accumulated Fe, Cu, and Mn in a similar manner, with sigmoid curves, whereas the super-late genotype accumulated these nutrients exponentially. Zn was accumulated by all four genotypes following a sigmoid curve. The early, intermediate, and late genotypes accumulated B linearly, whereas the super-late genotype accumulated B following a sigmoid curve. The maturation cycle of the genotype must be taken into account to apply the correct rate of micronutrient fertilization in coffee plantations.

ABSTRACT Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) may improve the adaptation of eucalypts saplings to field conditions and allow more efficient fertilizer use. The effectiveness of EMF inoculum application in promoting fungal colonization, plant growth, nutrient uptake, and the quality of rooted cuttings was evaluated forEucalyptus urophylla under commercial nursery conditions. For inoculated treatments, fertilization of the sapling substrate was reduced by 50 %. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement, wherein the factors were inoculum application rates of 0 (control), 5, 10, and 15 gel beads of calcium alginate containing the vegetative mycelium of Amanita muscaria, Elaphomyces antracinus, Pisolithus microcarpus, andScleroderma areolatum, plus a non-inoculated treatment without fertilization reduction in the substrate (commercial). Ectomycorrhizal fungi increased plant growth and fungal colonization as well as N and K uptake evenly. The best plant growth and fungal colonization were observed for the highest application rate. The greatest growth and fungal colonization and contents of P, N, and K were observed at the 10-bead rate. Plant inoculation with Amanita muscaria, Elaphomyces anthracinus, and Scleroderma areolatum increased P concentrations and contents in a differential manner. The Dickson Quality Index was not affected by the type of fungi or by inoculum application rates. Eucalypt rooted cuttings inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi and under half the amount of commercial fertilization had P, N, and K concentrations and contents greater than or equal to those of commercial plants and have high enough quality to be transplanted after 90 days.

ABSTRACT The economic exploitation of macaw palm [Acrocomia aculeate(Jacq.) Lodd. ex Mart.] is currently in transition, from extractivism to agricultural cultivation, thus requiring studies on the fertilization of the crop. This study evaluated the response of three genotypes of macaw palm to increasing rates of nitrogen and potassium, grown in the field until the 2nd year and to establish reference contents of mineral nutrients in the leaf. The experiment was a split-plot randomized block design with five main treatments (N and K rates) and three secondary treatments (genotypes), with three replications, each plot containing three plants. Plant height, leaf number, vigor, and nutrient contents in leaf tissues were evaluated at the end of 2nd year of cultivation. Differential responses were observed among genotypes, indicating that some genotypes are more efficient in the use of mineral inputs. There was a differentiated and positive response to increasing side-dressed N and K rates in the vegetative development of macaw genotypes until the 2nd year of field cultivation, indicating variability in the species in terms of nutrient use efficiency. The N and K fertilization rate corresponding to 360 g N + 480 g K2O per plant, in four split applications over the two years of cultivation, was insufficient to induce maximum vegetative development in the three macaw genotypes. There was no variation in macro- and micronutrient contents in leaf dry matter of the three macaw genotypes.

ABSTRACT The literature on fertilization for carrot growing usually recommends nutrient application rates for yield expectations lower than the yields currently obtained. Moreover, the recommendation only considers the results of soil chemical analysis and does not include effects such as crop residues or variations in yield levels. The aim of this study was to propose a fertilizer recommendation system for carrot cultivation (FERTICALC Carrot) which includes consideration of the nutrient supply by crop residues, variation in intended yield, soil chemical properties, and the growing season (winter or summer). To obtain the data necessary for modeling nutritional requirements, 210 carrot production stands were sampled in the region of Alto Paranaíba, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The dry matter content of the roots, the coefficient of biological utilization of nutrients in the roots, and the nutrient harvest index for summer and winter crops were determined for these samples. To model the nutrient supply by the soil, the literature was surveyed in regard to this theme. A modeling system was developed for recommendation of macronutrients and B. For cationic micronutrients, the system only reports crop nutrient export and extraction. The FERTICALC which was developed proved to be efficient for fertilizer recommendation for carrot cultivation. Advantages in relation to official fertilizer recommendation tables are continuous variation of nutrient application rates in accordance with soil properties and in accordance with data regarding the extraction efficiency of modern, higher yielding cultivars.

Objective: Impaired blood flow of the gastric tube represents a major cause of anastomotic leakage after esophageal resection. In order to improve local vascularisation, preoperative embolization (PE) of the left gastric artery has recently been proposed. The aimof this study was to assess our initial experience of this novel approach with a particular focus on anastomotic leakage. Methods: A consecutive series of 102 patients (81 male, 21 female, median age 64 years) underwent resection (82 Ivor-Lewis procedures, 9 transhiatal resections, 11 triple incisions) for esophageal malignancies at our institution from 2000 to 2009. Since 2004, PE was used selectively in 19 patients 21 days prior to elective esophagectomy. Selection criteria were normal gastric vascular anatomy, no pre-existing vascular disease, i.e. atheromatosis of the celiac trunk or superior mesenteric artery, and resectability of the tumor. PE was performed under local anesthesia on a dedicated system in a standard fashion. Following percutaneous transfemoral visceral angiography to identify gastric vascular anatomy, embolization was performed either with 5-F or with coaxial 3-F catheters and fibered metal coils. We analyzed retrospectively patient's data, operative data, and outcome from a prospective database. Results: The overall anastomotic leakage rate was 18・6% (19/102 patients); cervical anastomosis had a leak rate of 25% compared to intrathoracic anastomosis leak rate of 18・2%. While 17 of 83 patients without PE developed anastomotic leakage (20・5%), there were only 2 of 19 patients after PE revealing an anastomotic leakage (10・5%). Otherwise, patients with PE had no more other complications. There was only one PE-related complication (i.e. partial splenic necrosis).Mean hospital stay was 25 days versus 27 days for patients with PE and without PE, respectively. The mortality rate was 7・8% (8/102 patients), whereby four deaths were related to anastomotic leakage (1 and 3 patients with PE and without PE, respectively). Conclusion: PE is an interesting novel approach to improve gastric blood flow in order to minimize anastomotic leakage. Its application is safe and technically easy. Our preliminary experience revealed a decrease of the anastomotic leakage rate of almost 50%.

INTRODUCTION. Multimodal strategy targeted at prevention of catheter-related infection combine education to general measures of hygiene with specific guidelines for catheter insertion and dressing (1). OBJECTIVES. In this context, we tested the introduction of chlorhexidine(CHX)-impregnated sponges (2). METHODS. In our 32-beds mixed ICU, prospective surveillance of primary bacteremia and of microbiologically documented catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) is performed according to standardized definitions. New guidelines for central venous catheter (CVC) dressing combined a CHX-impregnated sponge (BioPatch_) with a transparent occlusive dressing (Tegaderm _) and planning for refection every 7 days. To contain costs, Biopatch_ was used only for internal jugular and femoral sites. Other elements of the prevention were not modified (overall compliance to hand hygiene 65-68%; non coated catheters except for burned patients [173 out of 9,542 patients];maximal sterile barriers for insertion; alcoholic solution ofCHXfor skin disinfection). RESULTS. Median monthly CVC-days increased from 710, to 749, 855 and 965 in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively (p\0.01). Following introduction of the new guidelines (4Q2007), the average monthly rate of infections decreased from 3.7 (95% CI: 2.6-4.8) episodes/1000 CVC-days over the 24 preceding months to 2.2 (95% CI: 1.5-2.8) over the 24 following months (p = 0.031). Dressings needed to be changed every 3-4 days. The decrease of catheter-related infections we observed in all consecutive admitted patients is comparable to that recently showed in a placeborandomized trial2. Further generalization to all CVC and arterial catheters access may be justified. CONCLUSIONS. Our data strongly suggest that combined with occlusive dressings, CHXimpregnated sponges for dressing of all CVC catheters inserted in internal jugular and/or femoral sites, significantly reduces the rate of primary bacteremia and CRBSI. Synthetic atrial natriuretic peptide, containing 26 amino acids in the rat sequence, L-364, 343 (Ileu-ANP), was infused intravenously at increasing rates (1-40 micrograms/min) into four normal volunteers. Mean intraarterial blood pressure decreased and heart rate increased in cumulative-dose-dependent fashion. Skin blood flow as measured with a laser Doppler device rose already with a cumulative dose of 55 micrograms Ileu-ANP and further rises were directly related to dose. The only side effects observed were those accompanying symptomatic hypotension at higher doses. These findings provide strong evidence that Ileu-ANP acts as a vasodilator in normal volunteers.

One of the key statistics that Iowa Corrections maintains to measure the success of our efforts is the three-year return-to-prison rate for offenders leaving prison and reentering the community. As the chart below shows, the rate for the three-year period from FY 2009 through FY 2012 is the lowest since this measure has been calculated.

This work carries out an empirical evaluation of the impact of the main mechanism for regulating the prices of medicines in the UK on a variety ofpharmaceutical price indices. The empirical evidence shows that the overall impact of the rate of return cap appears to have been slight or even null, and in any case that the impact would differ across therapeutic areas. These empiricalfindings suggest that the price regulation has managed to encourage UK-based firms¿ diversification in many therapeutic areas

This paper analyzes the issue of the interiority of the optimal population growth rate in a two-period overlapping generations model with endogenous fertility. Using Cobb-Douglas utility and production functions, we show that the introduction of a cost of raising children allows for the possibility of the existence of an interior global maximum in the planner¿s problem, contrary to the exogenous fertility case
