The maternal history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) has been reported more frequently in patients with type 2 DM than paternal history. The aim of the present study was to determine if there was an association between maternal history of DM and the presence of chronic complications or metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with type 2 DM. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1455 patients with type 2 DM. All outpatients with type 2 diabetes attending the endocrine clinics who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included. Familial history of DM was determined with a questionnaire. Diabetic complications were assessed using standard procedures. The definition of MetS used was that of the World Health Organization and the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III report criteria. Maternal history of DM was present in 469 (32.3%), absent in 713 (49.1%) and unknown in 273 patients (18.7%). Paternal history of DM was positive in 255 (17.6%), negative in 927 (63.8%) and unknown in 235 patients (16.1%). The frequency of microvascular chronic complications in patients with and without a positive maternal history of DM was similar: diabetic nephropathy (51.5 vs 52.5%), diabetic retinopathy (46.0 vs 41.7%), and diabetic sensory neuropathy (31.0 vs 37.1%). The prevalence of macrovascular chronic complications and MetS was also similar. Patients with type 2 DM were more likely to have a maternal than a paternal history of DM, although maternal history of DM was not associated with an increased prevalence of chronic complications or MetS.

Among the molecular, biochemical and cellular processes that orchestrate the development of the different phenotypes of cardiac hypertrophy in response to physiological stimuli or pathological insults, the specific contribution of exercise training has recently become appreciated. Physiological cardiac hypertrophy involves complex cardiac remodeling that occurs as an adaptive response to static or dynamic chronic exercise, but the stimuli and molecular mechanisms underlying transduction of the hemodynamic overload into myocardial growth are poorly understood. This review summarizes the physiological stimuli that induce concentric and eccentric physiological hypertrophy, and discusses the molecular mechanisms, sarcomeric organization, and signaling pathway involved, also showing that the cardiac markers of pathological hypertrophy (atrial natriuretic factor, β-myosin heavy chain and α-skeletal actin) are not increased. There is no fibrosis and no cardiac dysfunction in eccentric or concentric hypertrophy induced by exercise training. Therefore, the renin-angiotensin system has been implicated as one of the regulatory mechanisms for the control of cardiac function and structure. Here, we show that the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor is locally activated in pathological and physiological cardiac hypertrophy, although with exercise training it can be stimulated independently of the involvement of angiotensin II. Recently, microRNAs (miRs) have been investigated as a possible therapeutic approach since they regulate the translation of the target mRNAs involved in cardiac hypertrophy; however, miRs in relation to physiological hypertrophy have not been extensively investigated. We summarize here profiling studies that have examined miRs in pathological and physiological cardiac hypertrophy. An understanding of physiological cardiac remodeling may provide a strategy to improve ventricular function in cardiac dysfunction.

In this study, biomarkers and transcriptional factor motifs were identified in order to investigate the etiology and phenotypic severity of Down syndrome. GSE 1281, GSE 1611, and GSE 5390 were downloaded from the gene expression ominibus (GEO). A robust multiarray analysis (RMA) algorithm was applied to detect differentially expressed genes (DEGs). In order to screen for biological pathways and to interrogate the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway database, the database for annotation, visualization, and integrated discovery (DAVID) was used to carry out a gene ontology (GO) function enrichment for DEGs. Finally, a transcriptional regulatory network was constructed, and a hypergeometric distribution test was applied to select for significantly enriched transcriptional factor motifs. CBR1, DYRK1A, HMGN1, ITSN1, RCAN1, SON, TMEM50B, and TTC3 were each up-regulated two-fold in Down syndrome samples compared to normal samples; of these, SON and TTC3 were newly reported. CBR1, DYRK1A, HMGN1, ITSN1, RCAN1, SON, TMEM50B, and TTC3 were located on human chromosome 21 (mouse chromosome 16). The DEGs were significantly enriched in macromolecular complex subunit organization and focal adhesion pathways. Eleven significantly enriched transcription factor motifs (PAX5, EGR1, XBP1, SREBP1, OLF1, MZF1, NFY, NFKAPPAB, MYCMAX, NFE2, and RP58) were identified. The DEGs and transcription factor motifs identified in our study provide biomarkers for the understanding of Down syndrome pathogenesis and progression.

This research is looking to find out what benefits employees expect the organization of data governance gains for an organization and how it benefits implementing automated marketing capabilities. Quality and usability of the data are crucial for organizations to meet various business needs. Organizations have more data and technology available what can be utilized for example in automated marketing. Data governance addresses the organization of decision rights and accountabilities for the management of an organization’s data assets. With automated marketing it is meant sending a right message, to a right person, at a right time, automatically. The research is a single case study conducted in Finnish ICT-company. The case company was starting to organize data governance and implementing automated marketing capabilities at the time of the research. Empirical material is interviews of the employees of the case company. Content analysis is used to interpret the interviews in order to find the answers to the research questions. Theoretical framework of the research is derived from the morphology of data governance. Findings of the research indicate that the employees expect the organization of data governance among others to improve customer experience, to improve sales, to provide abilities to identify individual customer’s life-situation, ensure that the handling of the data is according to the regulations and improve operational efficiency. The organization of data governance is expected to solve problems in customer data quality that are currently hindering implementation of automated marketing capabilities.

Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selventää tietojärjestelmän omistajuuden muutoksessa olevan organisaation osaamisen kartoittamista, määrittämistä ja mittaamista. Yksilön, ryhmän sekä organisaation oppiminen nähdään keskeisenä tekijä organisaation kilpailukyvyn ylläpitämisessä ja kehittämisessä. Aihepiiriä on tutkittu paljon, kuitenkin on edelleen paljon erilaisia näkemyksiä oppimiseen liittyvistä aiheista ja siihen vaikuttavista tekijöistä. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat myös oppimiseen ja osaamiseen läheisesti liittyvät teemat, innovointi ja muutosjohtaminen, niiltä osin, kun ne vaikuttavat organisatoriseen ja/tai yksilön oppimiseen ja osaamiseen. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat kaksi julkishallinnon organisaatiota joiden välillä tapahtuu tietojärjestelmien omistajuuden vaihdon yhteydessä kohtuullisen laajamittaista osaamisen siirtoa. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osassa perehdyttiin organisaation osaamisen hallinnan prosessiin ja sen kehittämismahdollisuuksiin. Organisatoriseen oppimiseen ja osaamiseen vaikuttavat tekijät, niin sisäiset kuin ulkopuoliset, on selvitetty tutkimuksessa. Myös eri tekijöiden vaikutusta organisaation kilpailukykyyn ja kykyyn luoda uutta osaamista ja innovointia on selvitetty tutkimuksessa. Tutkimuksen tulokset ja empiirinen osuus antavat samankaltaisia ratkaisuja osaamiseen, yksilön ja organisaation, oppimisen osalta.

The purpose of this study is to analyze supplier’s value creation ability in project business in order to enhance customer’s business. In addition, the aim is to identify the role of business relationships in value creation and analyze the applicability of key account management in project business. The study considers value from the customer’s point of view. The concepts of value and value creation are widely discussed in marketing literature. Theory emphasizes the importance of value creation and business relationships in business markets. The empirical part of the study is conducted as a case study research. The empirical evidence is collected by interviewing one supplier organization and their three customer organizations. These companies operate in Finnish and global industrial markets. Data is collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed by using qualitative content analysis. The study identifies several customer value drivers influencing on the value creation, which can be divided into product, service and relationship elements. One of the recognized value drivers is customer-supplier relationship. The findings show that a closer relationship enhances value creation possibilities and the key account management program allows effective managing of business relationships. As managerial implications, suppliers should seek to create continuous and conversational relationships with the key account customers.

Bidirectional exchange of information between the cancer cells and their environment is essential for cancer to evolve. Cancer cells lose the ability to regulate their growth, gain the ability to detach from neighboring cells and finally some of the cells disseminate from the primary tumor and invade to the adjacent tissue. During cancer progression, cells acquire features that promote cancer motility and proliferation one of them being increased filopodia number. Filopodia are dynamic actin-rich structures extending from the leading edge of migrating cells and the main function of these structures is to serve as environmental sensors. It is nowadays widely appreciated, that not only the cancer cells, but also the surrounding of the tumor – the tumor microenvironment- contribute to cancer cell dissemination and tumor growth. Activated stromal fibroblasts, also known as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) actively participate on tumor progression. CAFs are the most abundant cell type surrounding the cancer cells and they are the main cell type producing the extracellular matrix (ECM) within tumor stroma. CAFs secrete growth factors to promote tumor growth, direct cancer cell invasion as well as modify the stromal ECM architecture. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the function of filopodia, particularly the role of filopodia-inducing protein Myosin-X (Myo10), in breast cancer cell invasion and metastasis. We found that Myo10 is an important regulator of basal type breast cancer spreading downstream of mutant p53. In addition, I investigated the role of CAFs and their secreted matrix on tumor growth. According to the results, CAF-derived matrix has altered organization and stiffness which induces the carcinoma cell proliferation via epigenetic mechanisms. I identified histone demethylase enzyme JMJD1a to be regulated by the stiffness and to participate in stiffness induced growth control.

Development of risk management practices became significant part of transportation companies’ strategy. Evolution from insurance management into enterprise risk management (ERM) led to development of risk management tools and methods. The purpose of this thesis is to design technique for evaluation of risk management practices of national transportation companies. The empirical research is made on the example of Russian and Finnish transportation companies. The required data was conducted with a help of survey. The result of the thesis is designed technique for risk management practices evaluation that allows to compare practices of different countries and organizations with different characteristics. The Master thesis has novelty in theoretical and practical contribution. It was designed new technique based on realization of the method of APIS. Moreover, it has practical implication as managers can utilize this method for comparison of practices between different countries, different organization and even different units within particular organization.

Research into organizational behaviour has indicated that there is an inevitable conflict between the needs of the individual and organizational demands. Psychologists have given insights into basic individual needs and contend that satisfaction of these needs constitutes a motivating force which enhances desired behavioural patterns. Behaviouralists have suggested that a basic and pervasive individual need is the culturally determined need for privacy. Anthropologists and environmental psychologists have shown that man's spatial behaviour is observable and predictable and that changes in the physical environment or the way it is perceived are accompanied by concommitant changes in behaviour. Research findings from each of the disciplines have been reviewed in an attempt to show that the physical environment is a significant factor in satisfying the needs of the individual organizational member, hence, a significant influence on organizational behaviour. A model has been generated to show the relationship between the physical setting and behaviour and to underscore the importance of making provisions within the physical setting for the attainment of a culturally determined optimal level of privacy. The physical setting, by providing for this need, becomes a significant factor in reducing the conflict between the individual and the organization and makes for acceptable role behaviour and the fulfilment of organizational goals.

This thesis takes some steps in examining the child protection system from a position that is rarely discussed. Specifically, I explore how Foucault's concept of disciplinary power can be used to demonstrate how power operates within the client/worker relationship. This relationship is shown to be quite complex with power flowing bidirectionally, rather than hierarchically. Instead of viewing power imbalances as a function of state control, I show how the client/worker relationship is constituted by the worker, the client, the organization and the social body. A postmodern auto ethnography is used to document my journey as I expose the disciplinary practices and instruments that I was subject to and used with my clients. 2 Given that the child protection system is constantly shifting and changing in order to improve its ability to safeguard children a greater emphasis is required to examine how workers operate within this complex, overwhelming and multi-dimensional world. This thesis has shown that by engaging in a reflexive examination of my position of power different approaches to making intervention beneficial to all involved become available. This is important if child protection work aims to work with clients rather than on clients.

‘The Father of Canadian Transportation’ is a term commonly associated with William Hamilton Merritt. Although he is most known for being one of the driving forces behind the building of the first Welland Canal, he was many things throughout his life; a soldier, merchant, promoter, entrepreneur and politician to name a few. Born on July 3, 1793 at Bedford, Westchester County, N.Y. to Thomas Merritt and Mary Hamilton, Merritt’s family relocated to Canada shortly after in 1796. The move came after Merritt’s father petitioned John Graves Simcoe for land in Upper Canada after serving under him in the Queen’s Rangers during the American Revolution. The family quickly settled into their life at Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines. Merritt’s father became sheriff of Lincoln County in 1803 while Merritt began his education in mathematics and surveying. After some brief travel and further education Merritt returned to Lincoln County, in 1809 to help farm his father’s land and open a general store. While a farmer and merchant, Merritt turned his attention to military endeavours. A short time after being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Lincoln militia, the War of 1812 broke out. Fulfilling his duty, Merritt fought in the Battle of Queenston Heights in October of 1812, and numerous small battles until the Battle of Lundy’s Lane in July 1814. It was here that Merritt was captured and held in Cheshire, Massachusetts until the war ended. Arriving back in the St. Catharines area upon his release, Merritt returned to being a merchant, as well as becoming a surveyor and mill owner. Some historians hypothesize that the need to draw water to his mill was how the idea of the Welland Canals was born. Beginning with a plan to connect the Welland River with the Twelve mile creek quickly developed into a connection between the Lakes Erie and Ontario. Its main purpose was to improve the St. Lawrence transportation system and provide a convenient way to transport goods without having to go through the Niagara Falls portage. The plan was set in motion in 1818, but most living in Queenston and Niagara were not happy with it as it would drive business away from them. Along with the opposition came financial and political restraints. Despite these factors Merritt pushed on and the Welland Canal Company was chartered by the Upper Canadian Assembly on January 19, 1824. The first sod was turned on November 30, 1824 almost a year after the initial chartering. Many difficulties arose during the building of the canal including financial, physical, and geographic restrictions. Despite the difficulties two schooners passed through the canal on November 30, 1829. Throughout the next four years continual work was done on the canal as it expended and was modified to better accommodate large ships. After his canal was underway Merritt took a more active role in the political arena, where he served in various positions throughout Upper Canada. In 1851, Merritt withdrew from the Executive Council for numerous reasons, one of which being that pubic interest had diverted from the canals to railways. Merritt tried his hand at other public works outside transportation and trade. He looked into building a lunatic asylum, worked on behalf of War of 1812 veterans, aided in building Brock’s monument, established schools, aided refugee slaves from the U.S. and tried to establish a National Archives among many other feats. He was described by some as having “policy too liberal – conceptions too vast – views too comprehensive to be comprehensible by all”, but he still made a great difference in the society in which he lived. After his great contributions, Merritt died aboard a ship in the Cornwall canal on July 5, 1862. The present set of experiments was designed to investigate the organization and refmement of young children's face space. Past research has demonstrated that adults encode individual faces in reference to a distinct face prototype that represents the average of all faces ever encountered. The prototype is not a static abstracted norm but rather a malleable face average that is continuously updated by experience (Valentine, 1991); for example, following prolonged viewing of faces with compressed features (a technique referred to as adaptation), adults rate similarly distorted faces as more normal and more attractive (simple attractiveness aftereffects). Recent studies have shown that adults possess category-specific face prototypes (e.g., based on race, sex). After viewing faces from two categories (e.g., Caucasian/Chinese) that are distorted in opposite directions, adults' attractiveness ratings simultaneously shift in opposite directions (opposing aftereffects). The current series of studies used a child-friendly method to examine whether, like adults, 5- and 8-year-old children show evidence for category-contingent opposing aftereffects. Participants were shown a computerized storybook in which Caucasian and Chinese children's faces were distorted in opposite directions (expanded and compressed). Both before and after adaptation (i.e., reading the storybook), participants judged the normality/attractiveness of a small number of expanded, compressed, and undistorted Caucasian and Chinese faces. The method was first validated by testing adults (Experiment I ) and was then refined in order to test 8- (Experiment 2) and 5-yearold (Experiment 4a) children. Five-year-olds (our youngest age group) were also tested in a simple aftereffects paradigm (Experiment 3) and with male and female faces distorted in opposite directions (Experiment 4b). The current research is the first to demonstrate evidence for simple attractiveness aftereffects in children as young as 5, thereby indicating that similar to adults, 5-year-olds utilize norm-based coding. Furthermore, this research provides evidence for racecontingent opposing aftereffects in both 5- and 8-year-olds; however, the opposing aftereffects demonstrated by 5-year-olds were driven largely by simple aftereffects for Caucasian faces. The lack of simple aftereffects for Chinese faces in 5-year-olds may be reflective of young children's limited experience with other-race faces and suggests that children's face space undergoes a period of increasing differentiation over time with respect to race. Lastly, we found no evidence for sex -contingent opposing aftereffects in 5-year-olds, which suggests that young children do not rely on a fully adult-like face space even for highly salient face categories (i.e., male/female) with which they have comparable levels of experience.

The palynology of Ocean Drilling Program Site 1007, leeward of the present Bahamas Bank, provides insights into upper Oligocene–lower Pleistocene dinoflagellate cyst associations in the tropical Americas. These associations are reviewed along with the sedimentary paleoenvironment to provide context for a morphological study of the cystdefined dinoflagellate Operculodinium bahamense and its comparison with the thecadefined dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum which produces a cyst assignable to the cyst-defined genus Operculodinium. Detailed reconstructions of the tabulation in both species reveal strong similarities, having a sexiform hyposomal tabulation and L-type or modified L-type ventral organization. Protoceratium reticulatum has dextral torsion of the hypotheca, requiring assignation of the genus to the subfamily Cribroperidinioideae, whereas Operculodinium bahamense has neutral torsion requiring assignation to the subfamily Leptodinioideae. Results either imply polyphyletic origins for the genus Operculodinium or that combinations of ventral organization and torsion cannot always be applied rigidly to subdivide the family Gonyaulacaceae.

Les pratiques relationnelles de soin (PRS) sont au cœur même des normes et valeurs professionnelles qui définissent la qualité de l’exercice infirmier, mais elles sont souvent compromises par un milieu de travail défavorable. La difficulté pour les infirmières à actualiser ces PRS qui s’inscrivent dans les interactions infirmière-patient par un ensemble de comportements de caring, constitue une menace à la qualité des soins, tout en créant d’importantes frustrations pour les infirmières. En mettant l’accent sur l’aspect relationnel du processus infirmier, cette recherche, abordée sous l'angle du caring, renvoie à une vision novatrice de la qualité des soins et de l'organisation des services en visant à expliquer l’impact du climat organisationnel sur le façonnement des PRS et la satisfaction professionnelle d’infirmières soignantes en milieu hospitalier. Cette étude prend appui sur une adaptation du Quality-Caring Model© de Duffy et Hoskins (2003) qui combine le modèle d’évaluation de la qualité de Donabedian (1980, 1992) et la théorie du Human Caring de Watson (1979, 1988). Un devis mixte de type explicatif séquentiel, combinant une méthode quantitative de type corrélationnel prédictif et une méthode qualitative de type étude de cas unique avec niveaux d’analyse imbriqués, a été privilégié. Pour la section quantitative auprès d’infirmières soignantes (n = 292), différentes échelles de mesure validées, de type Likert ont permis de mesurer les variables suivantes : le climat organisationnel (global et cinq dimensions composites) ; les PRS privilégiées ; les PRS actuelles ; l’écart entre les PRS privilégiées et actuelles ; la satisfaction professionnelle. Des analyses de régression linéaire hiérarchique ont permis de répondre aux six hypothèses du volet quantitatif. Pour le volet qualitatif, les données issues des sources documentaires, des commentaires recueillis dans les questionnaires et des entrevues effectuées auprès de différents acteurs (n = 15) ont été traités de manière systématique, par analyse de contenu, afin d’expliquer les liens entre les notions d’intérêts. L’intégration des inférences quantitatives et qualitatives s’est faite selon une approche de complémentarité. Nous retenons du volet quantitatif qu’une fois les variables de contrôle prises en compte, seule une dimension composite du climat organisationnel, soit les caractéristiques de la tâche, expliquent 5 % de la variance des PRS privilégiées. Le climat organisationnel global et ses dimensions composites relatives aux caractéristiques du rôle, de l’organisation, du supérieur et de l’équipe sont de puissants facteurs explicatifs des PRS actuelles (5 % à 11 % de la variance), de l’écart entre les PRS privilégiées et actuelles (4 % à 9 %) ainsi que de la satisfaction professionnelle (13 % à 30 %) des infirmières soignantes. De plus, il a été démontré, qu’au-delà de l’important impact du climat organisationnel global et des variables de contrôle, la fréquence des PRS contribue à augmenter la satisfaction professionnelle des infirmières (ß = 0,31 ; p < 0,001), alors que l’écart entre les PRS privilégiées et actuelles contribue à la diminuer (ß = - 0,30 ; p < 0,001) dans des proportions fort similaires (respectivement 7 % et 8 %). Le volet qualitatif a permis de mettre en relief quatre ordres de facteurs qui expliquent comment le climat organisationnel façonne les PRS et la satisfaction professionnelle des infirmières. Ces facteurs sont: 1) l’intensité de la charge de travail; 2) l’approche d’équipe et la perception du rôle infirmier ; 3) la perception du supérieur et de l’organisation; 4) certaines caractéristiques propres aux patients/familles et à l’infirmière. L’analyse de ces facteurs a révélé d’intéressantes interactions dynamiques entre quatre des cinq dimensions composites du climat, suggérant ainsi qu’il soit possible d’influencer une dimension en agissant sur une autre. L’intégration des inférences quantitatives et qualitatives rend compte de l’impact prépondérant des caractéristiques du rôle sur la réalisation des PRS et la satisfaction professionnelle des infirmières, tout en suggérant d’adopter une approche systémique qui mise sur de multiples facteurs dans la mise en oeuvre d’interventions visant l’amélioration des environnements de travail infirmier en milieu hospitalier.

L’objectif de ce mémoire est d’examiner les nombreuses associations qui existent entre les conditions de l’organisation du travail, les traits de personnalité et la détresse psychologique au travail. La question de recherche principale était : est-ce que les cinq grands traits de personnalité (Big Five personality traits) ont un effet modérateur sur la relation entre les conditions de l’organisation du travail et la détresse psychologique. De nombreuses autres questions ont aussi été considérées. Pour répondre aux vingt-et-une hypothèses proposées dans cette recherche, nous avons utilisé des données secondaires d’une étude transversale de 395 employés d’un service de police municipal. À la suite d’analyses multivariées, nous avons pu observer quatre associations significatives. Concernant les conditions de l’organisation du travail, nous avons trouvé que les demandes psychologiques en milieu de travail augment la détresse psychologique, tandis que le support d’un superviseur la diminue. En ce qui concerne, les traits de personnalité, nous avons trouvé qu’être névrotique (neuroticism) augmente la détresse psychologique. Finalement, nous avons trouvé un effet modérateur du trait de personnalité, être consciencieux (conscientiousness), sur la relation entre les demandes psychologiques et la détresse psychologique. Bref, nos résultats nous indiquent que les cinq grands traits de personnalité (Big Five personality traits) ont une influence mitigée sur la santé mentale en milieu de travail.
