Zooplankton samples were taken in five depth strata using a Multinet type Midi, with 50 µm nets. The samples were taken during the second leg only, three times at station 1, two times at station 2 and once at station 3. Zooplankton were identified to species / genus and life-stage, and at least 300 individuals were counted per sample. 10 individuals of each stage / species were measured and the numbers of eggs counted.

Geochemical studies of Cretaceous strata rich in organic carbon (OC) from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites and several land sections reveal several consistent relationships among amount of OC, hydrocarbon generating potential of kerogen (measured by pyrolysis as the hydrogen index, HI), and the isotopic composition of the OC. First, there is a positive correlation between HI and OC in strata that contain more than about 1% OC. Second, percent OC and HI often are negatively correlated with carbon isotopic composition (delta13C) of kerogen. The relationship between HI and OC indicates that as the amount of organic matter increases, this organic matter tends to be more lipid rich reflecting the marine source of the organic matter. Cretaceous samples that contain predominantly marine organic matter tend to be isotopically lighter than those that contain predominantly terrestrial organic matter. Average delta13C values for organic matter from most Cretaceous sites are between -26 and -28 per mil, and values heavier than about -25 per mil occur at very few sites. Most of the delta13C values of Miocene to Holocene OC-rich strata and modern marine plankton are between -16 to -23 per mil. Values of delta13C of modern terrestrial organic matter are mostly between -23 and -33 per mil. The depletion of terrestial OC in 13C relative to marine planktonic OC is the basis for numerous statements in the literature that isotopically light Cretaceous organic matter is of terrestrial origin, even though other organic geochemical and(or) optical indicators show that the organic matter is mainly of marine origin. A difference of about 5 per mil in delta13C between modern and Cretaceous OC-rich marine strata suggests either that Cretaceous marine planktonic organic matter had the same isotopic signature as modern marine plankton and that signature has been changed by diagenesis, or that OC derived from Cretaceous marine plankton was isotopically lighter by about 5 per mil relative to modern plankton OC. Diagenesis does not produce a significant shift in delta13C in Miocene to Holocene sediments, and therefore probably did not produce the isotopically light Cretaceous OC. This means that Cretaceous marine plankton must have had delta13C values that were about 5 per mil lighter than modern marine plankton, and at least several per mil lighter than Cretaceous terrestrial vegetation. The reason for these lighter values, however, is not obvious. It has been proposed that concentrations of CO2 were higher during the middle Cretaceous, and this more available CO2 may be responsible for the lighter delta13C values of Cretaceous marine organic matter.

Famennian Stromatoporoidea from the Quasiendothyra communis Foraminiferal Zone and slightly younger strata from the Debnik anticline, southern Poland, form a succession of three consecutive assemblages. Assemblages 1 and 3 consist of representatives of the order Clathrodictyida, while assemblage 2 is dominated by the order Labechiida. The clathrodictyids are represented by the genus Gerronostroma, and labechiids are represented by the genus Stylostroma. Species assigned here to the genus Gerronostroma show a network of amalgamated pillars in the central part of the columns, a feature regarded by previous authors as typical of the genus Clavidictyon. Two new species, Stylostroma multiformis sp. nov. and Gerronostroma raclaviense sp. nov., are described. Stromatoporoids from southern Poland differ from the Famennian fauna of western Europe, showing affinity to eastern European and Siberian Stromatoporoidea.

The book is devoted to fundamental problems of organic geochemistry of ocean sediments. It is based on materials of organic matter and gas studies in cores from DSDP Legs 50 and 64. Experimental results obtained in the Laboratory of Carbon Geochemistry (V.I. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry, Moscow) take the main part of the book. Evolution of organic matter in specific environment of deep ocean sediments, sources of organic matter in the ocean and methods of their identification based on isotopic analysis and other methods are under discussion. Gas geochemistry in normal conditions of diagenesis, and in conditions under intense heating is studied.

Neogene and Quaternary silicoflagellates, actiniscidians, and ebridians are described from Sites 679 through 688 in the eastern Pacific off Peru. Five silicoflagellate zones and one horizon can be distinguished in the Neogene and Quaternary sequences. The encountered Eocene and Oligocene sequences are barren in silicoflagellates. Several hiatuses were noted in the Neogene and early Pleistocene sequences. Displaced silicoflagellates and ebridians from older strata were found occasionally, with a distinct increase in the Quaternary at Site 688. Distribution lists for species found are presented for Sites 682, 683, 685 and 688. Systematic discussion centers on the Distephanus bioctonarius group, with special reference to Hole 681A. Two new forms (Distephanus bioctonarius f. decimarius and Distephanus speculum subsp. speculum f. pseudoseptenarius) are described from the eastern Pacific Quaternary sequence.

Results of geochemical studies of organic matter in black shales from the Cape Verde Basin are reported. Based on these results, in combination with data of petrographic analysis, conclusions are made about sapropelic nature of their organic matter and low degree of its coalification. It corresponds to the proto-catagenetic substage of sedimentary rocks. Black shales of the Cape Verde Basin are classified as potential oil source strata.

We present composite depth scales for the multiply cored intervals from Sites 1150 and 1151. These new depth scales place coeval strata recovered in cores from different holes at a single site into a common stratigraphic framework. At Site 1150, double coring between Holes 1150A and 1150B occurred over only a short interval between ~703 and 713 meters below seafloor (mbsf), but this is sufficient to tie the upper portion of the stratigraphic section cored in Hole 1150A to the lower portion cored in Hole 1150B. The upper ~100 m of the sedimentary section at Site 1151 was double cored with the advanced piston corer and partially cored with the rotary core barrel, resulting in the complete recovery of this interval. The composite depth scales were constructed using Splicer software to vertically adjust the relative depths of various cores from one hole to the depths from another hole so as to align distinct physical properties measured on cores. The magnetic susceptibility data was the physical property most easily correlated between holes, and therefore primarily used to create a composite depth scale and spliced stratigraphic section. The spliced section is a continuous stratigraphic section constructed from representative cored intervals from the holes at a site. Both the splice and the composite depth scale can be applied to other data sets from Site 1151 to provide a stratigraphically continuous and laterally consistent basis for interpreting lithologic features or data sets. The resulting composite scale showed a 30% improvement in correlation of the magnetic susceptibility data relative to the original mbsf depth scale, and comparable improvement when applied to the other data sets.

About one hundred samples of sediments and rocks recovered in Hole 603B were analyzed for type, abundance, and isotopic composition of organic matter, using a combination of Rock-Eval pyrolysis, C-H-N-S elemental analysis, and isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. Concentrations of major, minor, and trace inorganic elements were determined with a combination of X-ray fluorescence and induction-coupled plasma spectrometry. The oldest strata recovered in Hole 603B (lithologic Unit V) consist of interbedded light-colored limestones and marlstones, and black calcareous claystones of Neocomian age. The inorganic and organic geochemical results suggest a very terrigenous aspect to the black claystones. The organic geochemical results indicate that the limestones and marlstones contain a mixture of highly degraded marine and terrestrial organic matter. Comparison of the Neocomian carbonates at Site 603 with those on the other side of the North Atlantic, off Northwest Africa at Site 367, shows that the organic matter at Site 367 contains more marine organic matter, as indicated by higher pyrolysis hydrogen indices and lighter values of d13C. Comparison of inorganic geochemical results for the carbonate lithologies at Site 603 with those for carbonate lithologies at Site 367 suggests that the Site 603 carbonates may contain clastic material from both North American and African sources. The black claystones at Site 603, on the other hand, probably were derived almost entirely from North American clastic sources. Lithologic Unit IV overlying the Neocomian carbonates, consists of interbedded red, green, and black claystones. The black claystones at Site 603 contain more than ten times the organic carbon concentration of the interbedded green claystones. The average concentration of organic carbon in the black claystones (2.8%), however, is low relative to most mid-Cretaceous black claystones and shales in the Atlantic, particularly those found off Northwest Africa. The geochemical data all suggest that the organic matter in the black claystones is more abundant but generally more degraded than the organic matter in the green claystones, and that it was derived mainly from terrestrial sources and deposited in oxygenated bottom waters. The increased percentage of black claystone beds in the upper Cenomanian section, and the presence of more hydrogen-rich organic matter in this part of the section, probably resulted from the increased production and accumulation of marine organic matter that is represented worldwide near the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary in deep-sea and land sections. A few upper Cenomanian black claystone samples that have hydrogen indices > 150 also contain particularly high concentrations of V and Zn. Most samples of black claystone, however, are not particularly metal-rich compared with other black claystones and shales. Compared with red claystones from lithologic Unit IV, the green and black claystones are enriched in many trace transition elements, especially V, Zn, Cu, Co, and Pb. The main difference between the "carbonaceous" claystones of lithologic Unit IV and "variegated" or "multicolored" claystones of the overlying Upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary Unit III is the absence of black claystone beds. As observed at several other sites (105 and 386), the multicolored claystones at Site 603 are somewhat enriched in several trace transition elements-especially Cu, Ni, and Cr-relative to most deep-sea clays. The multicolored claystones are not enriched in Fe and Mn, and therefore are not "metalliferous" sediments in the sense of those found at several locations in the eastern Pacific. The source of the slightly elevated concentrations of transition metals in the multicolored claystones probably is upward advection and diffusion of metals from the black claystones of the underlying Hatteras Formation. The red, orange, and green claystone beds of lithologic Unit II (Eocene), like those of Unit III, really represent a continuation of deposition of multicolored claystone that began after the deposition of the Neocomian carbonates. The color of the few black beds that occur within this unit results from high concentrations of manganese oxide rather than high concentrations of organic matter.

The SESRU01_mesozooplankton dataset contains data collected in April 2008 at 19 stations located between 37°E and 39.5°E and between 42.4°N and 44.5°N in the north-eastern Black Sea. Samples were collected with a Juday net (mesh size 180 ?m, mouth area 0.1 m**2). Integrated samples were taken from the lower boundary of the oxic zone to the surface, stratified samples were taken according to CTD-profiles: samples were taken from the following depth strata: 1) the upper mixed layer (UML); 2) the layer of high temperature gradients (from the upper boundary of thermocline to the depth of 8 deg C temperature); 3) cold Intermediate layer (CIL) - the layer with the T< 8 deg C; 4) from the depth of sigma theta = 15.8 (oxycline) to the lower boundary of CIL; 5) from the depth of sigma theta = 16.2 to the depth of sigma theta = 15.8. Samples were analysed for zooplankton species and stage composition and abundance. Juday net: Vertical tows of a closing Juday net, with mouth area 0.1 m**2, mesh size 180µm. Samples were taken from different layers. Towing speed: 1m/s. Samples were preserved by a 4% formaldehyde sea water buffered solution. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area by the wire length. The entire sample or an aliquot (1/2 to1/4) was analyzed under the binocular microscope. Mesozooplankton species and stages were identified and enumerated; meroplankton were identified and enumerated at higher taxonomic level. Taxonomic identification was done at Shirshov Institute of Oceanology using the relevant taxonomic literature (Rose, 1933, Brodsky, 1950, and Internet resources).

The biodiversity of pelagic deep-sea ecosystems has received growing scientific interest in the last decade, especially in the framework of international marine biodiversity initiatives, such as Census of Marine Life (CoML). While a growing number of deep-sea zooplankton species has been identified and genetically characterized, little information is available on the mechanisms minimizing inter-specific competition and thus allowing closely related species to co-occur in the deep-sea pelagic realm. Focussing on the two dominant calanoid copepod families Euchaetidae and Aetideidae in Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean, the present study strives to characterize ecological niches of co-occurring species, with regard to vertical distribution, dietary composition as derived from lipid biomarkers, and trophic level on the basis of stable isotope signatures. Closely related species were usually restricted to different depth layers, resulting in a multi-layered vertical distribution pattern. Thus, vertical partitioning was an important mechanism to avoid inter-specific competition. Species occurring in the same depth strata usually belonged to different genera. They differed in fatty acid composition and trophic level, indicating different food preferences. Herbivorous Calanus represent major prey items for many omnivorous and carnivorous species throughout the water column. The seasonal and ontogenetic vertical migration of Calanus acts as a short-cut in food supply for pelagic deep-sea ecosystems in the Arctic.

Abyssal agglutinated foraminifers allow biostratigraphic correlation of Upper Cretaceous brown zeolitic claystones in Deep Sea Drilling Project Holes 196A and 198A and Ocean Drilling Program Holes 800A and 801 A. Three agglutinated foraminiferal zones subdivide the strata overlying the Campanian to Cenomanian cherts. The lower zone is characterized by Hormosina gigantea, which is a Campanian zonal marker in the North Atlantic Ocean and western Tethys. A major correlation level, which was observed in all holes studied, is based on the acme of evolute Haplophragmoides spp. This acme zone was observed in Sample 129-801A-6R-CC, about 9 m above the first occurrence of H. gigantea in Sample 129-801A-7R-1, 62-67 cm (approximately middle Campanian). The uppermost zone is characterized by dominant Paratrochamminoides spp. and in some instances common Bolivinopsis parvissimus (late Campanian to Maestrichtian). The available biostratigraphic data for the Upper Cretaceous of Sites 196, 198, 800, and 801 are correlated with the biochronologic framework of the North Atlantic, western Mediterranean, and Carpathians. Additionally, we use quantitative estimates of the diversity and abundance of agglutinated foraminiferal species to monitor general faunal trends with time in the western Pacific.
