Résumé: L'automatisation du séquençage et de l'annotation des génomes, ainsi que l'application à large échelle de méthodes de mesure de l'expression génique, génèrent une quantité phénoménale de données pour des organismes modèles tels que l'homme ou la souris. Dans ce déluge de données, il devient très difficile d'obtenir des informations spécifiques à un organisme ou à un gène, et une telle recherche aboutit fréquemment à des réponses fragmentées, voir incomplètes. La création d'une base de données capable de gérer et d'intégrer aussi bien les données génomiques que les données transcriptomiques peut grandement améliorer la vitesse de recherche ainsi que la qualité des résultats obtenus, en permettant une comparaison directe de mesures d'expression des gènes provenant d'expériences réalisées grâce à des techniques différentes. L'objectif principal de ce projet, appelé CleanEx, est de fournir un accès direct aux données d'expression publiques par le biais de noms de gènes officiels, et de représenter des données d'expression produites selon des protocoles différents de manière à faciliter une analyse générale et une comparaison entre plusieurs jeux de données. Une mise à jour cohérente et régulière de la nomenclature des gènes est assurée en associant chaque expérience d'expression de gène à un identificateur permanent de la séquence-cible, donnant une description physique de la population d'ARN visée par l'expérience. Ces identificateurs sont ensuite associés à intervalles réguliers aux catalogues, en constante évolution, des gènes d'organismes modèles. Cette procédure automatique de traçage se fonde en partie sur des ressources externes d'information génomique, telles que UniGene et RefSeq. La partie centrale de CleanEx consiste en un index de gènes établi de manière hebdomadaire et qui contient les liens à toutes les données publiques d'expression déjà incorporées au système. En outre, la base de données des séquences-cible fournit un lien sur le gène correspondant ainsi qu'un contrôle de qualité de ce lien pour différents types de ressources expérimentales, telles que des clones ou des sondes Affymetrix. Le système de recherche en ligne de CleanEx offre un accès aux entrées individuelles ainsi qu'à des outils d'analyse croisée de jeux de donnnées. Ces outils se sont avérés très efficaces dans le cadre de la comparaison de l'expression de gènes, ainsi que, dans une certaine mesure, dans la détection d'une variation de cette expression liée au phénomène d'épissage alternatif. Abstract: The automatic genome sequencing and annotation, as well as the large-scale gene expression measurements methods, generate a massive amount of data for model organisms. Searching for genespecific or organism-specific information througout all the different databases has become a very difficult task, and often results in fragmented and unrelated answers. The generation of a database which will federate and integrate genomic and transcriptomic data together will greatly improve the search speed as well as the quality of the results by allowing a direct comparison of expression results obtained by different techniques. The main goal of this project, called the CleanEx database, is thus to provide access to public gene expression data via unique gene names and to represent heterogeneous expression data produced by different technologies in a way that facilitates joint analysis and crossdataset comparisons. A consistent and uptodate gene nomenclature is achieved by associating each single gene expression experiment with a permanent target identifier consisting of a physical description of the targeted RNA population or the hybridization reagent used. These targets are then mapped at regular intervals to the growing and evolving catalogues of genes from model organisms, such as human and mouse. The completely automatic mapping procedure relies partly on external genome information resources such as UniGene and RefSeq. The central part of CleanEx is a weekly built gene index containing crossreferences to all public expression data already incorporated into the system. In addition, the expression target database of CleanEx provides gene mapping and quality control information for various types of experimental resources, such as cDNA clones or Affymetrix probe sets. The Affymetrix mapping files are accessible as text files, for further use in external applications, and as individual entries, via the webbased interfaces . The CleanEx webbased query interfaces offer access to individual entries via text string searches or quantitative expression criteria, as well as crossdataset analysis tools, and crosschip gene comparison. These tools have proven to be very efficient in expression data comparison and even, to a certain extent, in detection of differentially expressed splice variants. Even though the research on innovation in services has expanded remarkably especially during the past two decades, there is still a need to increase understanding on the special characteristics of service innovation. In addition to studying innovation in service companies and industries, research has also recently focused more on services in innovation, as especially the significance of so-called knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) for the competitive edge of their clients, othercompanies, regions and even nations has been proved in several previous studies. This study focuses on studying technology-based KIBS firms, and technology andengineering consulting (TEC) sector in particular. These firms have multiple roles in innovation systems, and thus, there is also a need for in-depth studies that increase knowledge about the types and dimensions of service innovations as well as underlying mechanisms and procedures which make the innovations successful. The main aim of this study is to generate new knowledge in the fragmented research field of service innovation management by recognizing the different typesof innovations in TEC services and some of the enablers of and barriers to innovation capacity in the field, especially from the knowledge management perspective. The study also aims to shed light on some of the existing routines and new constructions needed for enhancing service innovation and knowledge processing activities in KIBS companies of the TEC sector. The main samples of data in this research include literature reviews and public data sources, and a qualitative research approach with exploratory case studies conducted with the help of the interviews at technology consulting companies in Singapore in 2006. These complement the qualitative interview data gathered previously in Finland during a larger research project in the years 2004-2005. The data is also supplemented by a survey conducted in Singapore. The respondents for the survey by Tan (2007) were technology consulting companies who operate in the Singapore region. The purpose ofthe quantitative part of the study was to validate and further examine specificaspects such as the influence of knowledge management activities on innovativeness and different types of service innovations, in which the technology consultancies are involved. Singapore is known as a South-east Asian knowledge hub and is thus a significant research area where several multinational knowledge-intensive service firms operate. Typically, the service innovations identified in the studied TEC firms were formed by several dimensions of innovations. In addition to technological aspects, innovations were, for instance, related to new client interfaces and service delivery processes. The main enablers of and barriers to innovation seem to be partly similar in Singaporean firms as compared to the earlier study of Finnish TEC firms. Empirical studies also brought forth the significance of various sources of knowledge and knowledge processing activities as themain driving forces of service innovation in technology-related KIBS firms. A framework was also developed to study the effect of knowledge processing capabilities as well as some moderators on the innovativeness of TEC firms. Especially efficient knowledge acquisition and environmental dynamism seem to influence the innovativeness of TEC firms positively. The results of the study also contributeto the present service innovation literature by focusing more on 'innovation within KIBs' rather than 'innovation through KIBS', which has been the typical viewpoint stressed in the previous literature. Additionally, the study provides several possibilities for further research.

Abstract The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is composed of three homologous subunits α, ß, and γ. This channel is involved in the regulation of sodium balance, which influences the periciliary liquid level in the lung, and blood pressure via the kidney. ENaC expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes is preferentially and rapidly assembled into heteromeric αßγ complexes. Expression of homomeric α or heteromeric αß and αγ complexes lead to channel expression at the cell surface wíth low activities. Recent studies have demonstrated that α and γ (but not ß) ENaC subunits undergo proteolytic cleavage by endogenous proteases (i.e. furin) correlating with increased channel activity. We therefore assayed the full-length subunits and their cleavage products at the cell surface, as well as in the intracellular pool for all homo- and heteromeric combínations (α, ß, γ, ßγ, αß, αγ, ßγ and αßγ) and measured the corresponding channel activities as amiloride-sensitive sodíum transport (INa). We showed that upon assembly, cleavage of the y ENaC subunit ís responsible for increasing INa. We further demonstrated that in disease states such as cystic fibrosis (CF) where there is disequilibrium in the proteaseprotease inhibitor balance, ENaC is over-activated by the serine protease elastase (NE). We demonstrated that elevated NE concentrations can cleave cell surface expressed γ ENaC (but not α, or ß ENaC), suggesting a causal relationship between γ ENaC cleavage and ENaC activation, taking place at the plasma membrane. In addition, we demonstrated that the serine protease inhibitor (serpin) serpinH1, which is co-expressed with ENaC in the distal nephron is capable of inhibiting the channel by preventing cleavage of the γ ENaC subunit. Aldosterone mediated increases in INa aze known to be inhibted by TGFß. TGFß is also known to increase serpinHl expression. The demonstrated inhibition of γ ENaC cleavage and channel activation by serpinH1 may be responsible for the effect of TGFß on aldosterone stimulation in the distal nephron. In summary, we show that cleavage of the γ subunit, but not the α or ß subunit is linked to channel activation in three seperate contexts. Résumé Le canal épithélial à sodium (ENaC) est constitué de trois sous-unités homologues α, ß, and γ. Ce canal est impliqué dans le maintien de la balance sodique qui influence le niveau du liquide périciliaire du poumon et la pression sanguine via le rein. Dans les ovocytes de Xenopus laevis ENaC est préférentiellement et rapidement exprimé en formant un complexe hétéromérique αßγ. En revanche, l'expression homomérique de α ou hétéromérique des complexes αß et αγ conduit à une expression à la surface cellulaire d'un canal ENaC ne possédant qu'une faible activité. Des études récentes ont mis en évidence que les sous-unités α et γ d'ENaC (mais pas ß) sont coupées par des protéases endogènes (les farines) et que ces clivages augmentent l'activité du canal. Nous avons donc analysé, aussi bien à la surface cellulaire que dans le cytoplasme, les produits des clivages de combinaison homo- et hétéromérique des sous-unités d'ENaC (α, ß, γ, ßγ, αß, αγ, ßγ et αßγ). En parallèle, nous avons étudié l'activité correspondante à ces canaux par la mesure du transport de sodium sensible à l'amiloride (INa). Nous avons montré que lors de l'assemblage des sous-unités d'ENaC, le clivage de γ correspond à l'augmentation de INa. Nous avons également mis en évidence que dans une maladie telle que la fibrose cystique (CF) caractérisée par un déséquilibre de la balance protéase-inhibiteur de protéase, ENaC est suractivé par une sérine protéase nommée élastase (NE). L'augmentation de la concentration de NE clive γ ENaC exprimé à la surface cellulaire (mais pas α, ni ß ENaC) suggérant une causalité entre le clivage d'ENaC et son activation à la membrane plasmique. De plus, nous avons démontré que l'inhibiteur de sérine protéase (serpin) serpinH1, qui est co-exprimé avec ENaC dans le néphron distal, inhibe l'activité du canal en empêchant le clivage de la sous-unité γ ENaC. Il est connu que le INa induit par l'aldostérone peut être inhibé par TGFß. Or TGFß augmente l'expression de serpinH1. L'inhibition du clivage de γ ENaC et de l'activation du canal par la serpinH1 que nous avons mis en évidence pourrait ainsi être responsable de l'effet de TGFß sur la stimulation du courant par l'aldostérone dans le néphron distal. En résumé, nous avons montré que le clivage de la sous-unité γ, mais pas des sous-unités α et ß, est lié à l'activation du canal dans trois contextes distincts. Résumé tout public Le corps humain est composé d'environ 10 000 milliards de cellules et d'approximativement 60% d'eau. Les cellules du corps sont les unités fondamentales de la vie et elles sont dépendantes de certains nutriments et molécules. Ces nutriments et molécules sont dissous dans l'eau qui est présente dans et hors des cellules. Le maintien d'une concentration adéquate - de ces nutriments et de ces molécules dans l'eau à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur des cellules est -..essentiel pour leur survie. L'eau hors des cellules est nommée le fluide extracellulaire et peut être subdivisée en fluide interstitiel, qui se trouve autour des cellules, et en plasma, qui est le fluide des vaisseaux sanguins. Les fluides, les nutriments et les molécules sont constamment échangés entre les cellules, le fluide interstitiel, et le plasma. Le plasma circule dans le système circulatoire afin de distribuer les nutriments et molécules dans tout le corps et afin d'enlever les déchets cellulaires. Le rein joue un rôle essentiel dans la régulation du volume et de la concentration du plasma en éliminant sélectivement les nutriments et les molécules via la formation de l'urine. L'être humain possède deux reins, constitués chacun d'environ 1 million de néphrons. Ces derniers sont responsables de réabsorber et de sécréter sélectivement les nutriments et les molécules. Le canal épithélial à sodium (ENaC) est localisé à la surface cellulaire des néphrons et est responsable de la réabsorption du sodium (Na+). Le Na+ est présent dans quasiment toute la nourriture que nous mangeons et représente, en terme de molécule, 50% du sel de cuisine. Si trop de sodium est consommé, ENaC est inactif, si bien que le Na+ n'est pas réabsorbé et quitte le corps par l'urine. Ce mécanisme permet d'éviter que la concentration plasmatique de Na+ ne devienne trop grande, ce qui résulterait en une augmentation de la pression sanguine. Si trop peu de Na+ est consommé, ENaC réabsorbe le Na+ de l'urine primaire ce qui permet de conserver la concentration de Na+ et de prévenir une diminution de la pression sanguine par une perte de Na+. ENaC est aussi présent dans les cellules des poumons qui sont les organes permettant la respiration. La respiration est aussi essentielle pour la survie des cellules. Les poumons ne doivent pas contenir trop de liquide afin de permettre la respiration, mais en même temps ils ne doivent pas non plus être trop secs. En effet, ceci tuerait les cellules et empêcherait aussi la respiration. ENaC permet de maintenir un niveau d'humidité approprié dans les poumons en absorbant du Na+ ce qui entraîne un mouvement osmotique d'eau. L'absorption de sodium par ENaC ~ est augmentée par les protéases (in vitro et ex vivo). Les protéases sont des molécules qui peuvent couper d'autres molécules à des endroits précis. Nous avons démonté que certaines protéases augmentent l'absorption de Na+ en coupant ENaC à des endroits spécifiques. L'inhibition de ces protéases diminue le transport de Na+ et empêche le clivage d'ENaC. Dans certaines maladies telle que la mucoviscidose, des protéases sont suractivées et augmentent l'activité d'ENaC de manière inappropriée conduisant à une trop forte absorption de Na+ et à un déséquilibre de la muqueuse des poumons. Cette étude est donc particulièrement importante dans le cadre de la recherche thérapeutique de ce genre de maladie.

The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of how the managers build their early career in information and communication technology industry (ICT business sector) and pulp- and paper industry (paper business sector). The focus of the study is to explore the importance differing a business sectors have in influencing managerial careers. Business sectors can affect careers in several ways.Sectors have different history and traditions. Also the age structure of ICT personnel differs from the age structure of personnel in the paper industry. Managers in the ICT and paper sector are technically educated but in different disciplines. Differences exist also in ways of recruiting and developing commitment inpersonnel. The target group of this research, middle management engineering personnel, work in Finnish ICT and paper companies. Research data were gathered in April-December 2002 in South-Karelia by interviewing 30 managers and six directors working in three Finnish ICT companies and in three paper companies. The research issue is approached on two levels: the individual level and the organizational level. The managers related their career stories in focused interviews. Directors, representing the organizations, described the generalities of the business sector and gave background information on company policies, human relationshippractices, as well as career and human resource development. Results of the study contribute to research discussions of career, life-span reasoning, socialization and commitment. Career is conceived as a series of positions including everykind of hierarchical mobility and all kinds of positions in work. A manager's career develops in interaction with the organization and it can be seen as involving a socializing process in an organization as a consequence of experiences andchanges in positions. This research contributes to the understanding of the nature of career in the context of two business sectors. Universal career theories,for the most part, do not perceive the importance of business sector in determining career experience. This study concentrates on describing and understanding early careers in two different business areas, elements committing managers to particular business sectors and the actions of companies in that particular sector. While career research began in the middle of 1950s, the theoretical basis of career research seems to be quite fragmented still. However, a dichotomy is consistently presented between traditional, hierarchical career research and boundaryless career thinking. In this research we examine how these old and new career concepts are evidence in the ICT and paper sectors. Careers are changing from formal, hierarchy-based structures to more fluid arrangements. The new boundaryless career concept captures territory from old career thinking. Mobility between employers, networks, and changing hierarchical structures in organizations, as well as personal and family reasons are theorized to bring changes to careers patterns in the future. However, the pace of this change in careers will vary between the ICT and paper business sectors. Findings of this research indicate that business sector has an effect on how managerial careers develop. The environment where career is developed differs between ICT and paper sectors. Careers begin differently in the two environments and the speed of career progression is distinct. ICT careers are built within the business sector whereas paper careers are made inside one company. Also recruiting and socialization practices differ from one sector to the other.

Paperiteollisuus on ollut perinteisesti fragmentoitunut toimiala, mutta viime vuosikymmenen aikana konsolidoitumisprosessi on kiihtynyt. Yrityskaupat ja fuusiot ovat muuttaneet paperiteollisuuden markkinarakennetta merkittävästi. Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia yleisesti markkinarakenteen vaikutusta liiketoiminnan tuloksiin sekä analysoida yrityskauppojen ja fuusioiden syitä, tuloksia ja rajoituksia. Tavoitteena oli myös tutkia paperiteollisuuden konsolidoitumisen vaikutuksia hintakehitykseen, hintaheilahteluihin ja kannattavuuteen. Keskeisenä syynä konsolidoitumiskehitykselle voidaan pitää uusien paperikoneiden huomattavaa investointikustannusten kasvua. Toinen tärkeä tekijä yhdentymiskehitykselle on se, että paperiteollisuus on saavuttanut elinkaaren kypsyysvaiheen Euroopassa, Pohjois-Amerikassa ja Japanissa. Yrityskauppojen ja fuusioiden motiiveja paperiteollisuudessa ovat mm. kasvu kypsillä markkinoilla, tarve parantaa taloudellista tulosta, mahdollisuus toimia globaalisti ja hyödyntää siitä saatavat edut tai mahdollisuus parempaan arvoketjun hallintaan. Näyttää siltä, että suurempien paperiteollisuusyritysten kannattavuus ei ole parempi kuin pienemmillä yrityksillä. Lisäksi useimmissa paperiteollisuuden yrityskaupoissa ja fuusioissa näyttäisi ostavan osapuolen kurssikehitys ilmoitusta seuraavana päivänä olevan negatiivinen.

Tämän diplomityön päämääränä oli kuvata tilaus-toimitusprosessin eri toimintojen työnkulku, kun tuotetiedonhallintajärjestelmä on osa työympäristöä. Työn teoreettisessa osassa tarkasteltiin liiketoimintaprosessien uudistamista ja prosessien määrittämistä sekä esiteltiin tuotetiedonhallinnan (PDM) keskeiset osa-alueet. Kohdeyrityksen tausta ja strategiat esiteltiin, minkä jälkeen muutoksia arvioitiin suhteessa teoriaosuuden tuloksiin. Nykyisten toimintatapojen määrittämistä varten haastateltiin henkilöitä jokaisesta tilaus-toimitusprosessin vaiheesta tuotantoyksikön sisällä. Lopuksi kuvattiin yrityksen tuotetiedonhallintaperiaatteet ja määritettiin työnkulku prosessin eri vaiheissa. Samalla kuin uusi tuotetiedonhallintajärjestelmä otetaan käyttöön, on yrityksessä omaksuttava tuotetiedonhallinnan ajatusmalli. Tuoterakenteen hallinta jakautuu nyt eri toimintojen kesken, jolloin suunnittelun rakenne, tuotannon rakenne ja huoltorakenne ovat eri ihmisten vastuulla. Näiden eri rakenteiden konfigurointi tilaus-toimitus prosessin aikana määrää missä järjestyksessä toiminnot on suoritettava eri järjestelmien välillä. Monikansallinen suunnitteluorganisaatio on myös otettava huomioon tilauksenkulun aikana. Tuotetiedonhallintajärjestelmää käytetään yhdessä tuttujen suunnitteluohjelmien sekä toiminnanohjausjärjestelmän (ERP) kanssa. Työnkulkukaaviossa määritellään koko yritystä koskeva malli siitä, miten ja missä järjestyksessä tehtävät on suoritettava eri järjestelmissä tilaus-toimitus prosessin aikana. Tässä työssä tutkittiin tuotteen määrittelyn ja suunnittelutiedon hallinnan kannalta oleellisimmat tilaus-toimitusprosessiin kuuluvat toiminnot; myynti, myynnin tuki, tuotannon ohjaus, sovellussuunnittelu ja dokumentointi. Tulevaisuudessa on suositeltavaa pohtia tuotetiedonhallintajärjestelmän käyttöönottoa myös tuotannossa ja ostoissa. Tilaus-toimitusprosessiin liittyvät kehitysmahdollisuudet kannattaisi seuraavaksi kohdistaa tilauksen määrittelyvaiheeseen myyjä-asiakas rajapinnassa, jossa tehdyt virheet kertautuvat jokaisessa prosessin vaiheessa.

Suorituskyky- ja kuormitustestien tekeminen sovelluksille on erittäin tärkeä osa tuotantoprosessia nykypäivänä. Myös Web-sovelluksia testataan yhä enemmän. Tarve suorituskyky- ja kuormitustestien tekemiselle on selvä. Testattavan ympäristön tämänhetkinen, mutta myös tulevaisuuden toimivuus taataan oikein tehdyillä testeillä ja niitä seuraavilla korjaustoimenpiteillä. Suurten käyttäjämäärien testaaminen manuaalisesti on kuitenkin hyvin vaikeaa. Sirpaleisen ympäristön, kuten palveluihin perustuvien Web-sovellusympäristöjen testaaminen on haaste. Tämän työn aiheena on arvioida työkaluja ja menetelmiä, joilla raskaita teollisia Web-sovelluksia voidaan testata. Tavoitteena on löytää testausmenetelmiä, joilla voidaan luotettavasti simuloida suuria käyttäjämääriä. Tavoitteena on myös arvioida erilaisten yhteyksien ja protokollien vaikutusta Web-sovelluksen suorituskykyyn.

The chicken acid-sensing ion channel ASIC1 has been crystallized as a homotrimer. We address here the oligomeric state of the functional ASIC1 in situ at the cell surface. The oligomeric states of functional ASIC1a and mutants with additional cysteines introduced in the extracellular pore vestibule were resolved on SDS-PAGE. The functional ASIC1 complexes were stabilized at the cell surface of Xenopus laevis oocytes or CHO cells either using the sulfhydryl crosslinker BMOE, or sodium tetrathionate (NaTT). Under these different crosslinking conditions ASIC1a migrates as four distinct oligomeric states that correspond by mass to multiples of a single ASIC1a subunit. The relative importance of each of the four ASIC1a oligomers was critically dependent on the availability of cysteines in the transmembrane domain for crosslinking, consistent with the presence of ASIC1a homo-oligomers. The expression of ASIC1a monomers, trimeric or tetrameric concatemeric cDNA constructs resulted in functional channels. The resulting ASIC1a complexes are resolved as a predominant tetramer over the other oligomeric forms, after stabilization with BMOE or NaTT and SDS-PAGE/western blot analysis. Our data identify a major ASIC1a homotetramer at the surface membrane of the cell expressing functional ASIC1a channel.

Fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) are involved in proliferative and differentiation physiological responses. Deregulation of FGFR-mediated signaling involving the Ras/PI3K/Akt and the Ras/Raf/ERK MAPK pathways is causally involved in the development of several cancers. The caspase-3/p120 RasGAP module is a stress sensor switch. Under mild stress conditions, RasGAP is cleaved by caspase-3 at position 455. The resulting N-terminal fragment, called fragment N, stimulates anti-death signaling. When caspase-3 activity further increases, fragment N is cleaved at position 157. This generates a fragment, called N2, that no longer protects cells. Here, we investigated in Xenopus oocytes the impact of RasGAP and its fragments on FGF1-mediated signaling during G2/M cell cycle transition. RasGAP used its N-terminal Src homology 2 domain to bind FGFR once stimulated by FGF1, and this was necessary for the recruitment of Akt to the FGFR complex. Fragment N, which did not associate with the FGFR complex, favored FGF1-induced ERK stimulation, leading to accelerated G2/M transition. In contrast, fragment N2 bound the FGFR, and this inhibited mTORC2-dependent Akt Ser-473 phosphorylation and ERK2 phosphorylation but not phosphorylation of Akt on Thr-308. This also blocked cell cycle progression. Inhibition of Akt Ser-473 phosphorylation and entry into G2/M was relieved by PHLPP phosphatase inhibition. Hence, full-length RasGAP favors Akt activity by shielding it from deactivating phosphatases. This shielding was abrogated by fragment N2. These results highlight the role played by RasGAP in FGFR signaling and how graded stress intensities, by generating different RasGAP fragments, can positively or negatively impact this signaling.

Freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity are presently seriously threatened by global development and population growth, leading to increases in nutrient inputs and intensification of eutrophication-induced problems in receiving fresh waters, particularly in lakes. Climate change constitutes another threat exacerbating the symptoms of eutrophication and species migration and loss. Unequivocal evidence of climate change impacts is still highly fragmented despite the intensive research, in part due to the variety and uncertainty of climate models and underlying emission scenarios but also due to the different approaches applied to study its effects. We first describe the strengths and weaknesses of the multi-faceted approaches that are presently available for elucidating the effects of climate change in lakes, including space-for-time substitution, time series, experiments, palaeoecology and modelling. Reviewing combined results from studies based on the various approaches, we describe the likely effects of climate changes on biological communities, trophic dynamics and the ecological state of lakes. We further discuss potential mitigation and adaptation measures to counteract the effects of climate change on lakes and, finally, we highlight some of the future challenges that we face to improve our capacity for successful prediction.

Organisatorinen oppiminen nähdään avainasemassa yrityksen kilpailukyvyn kehittämisessä. Aihepiiristä onkin tehty runsaasti tutkimusta, mutta edelleen näkemykset organisaation oppimisesta, oppimisprosessin luonteesta, tuloksista ja näihin vaikuttavista tekijöistä ovat moninaiset. Dialektisuus kuvaa sekä organisatorisesta oppimisesta käytyä keskustelua että oppimisprosessien luonnetta dynaamisina vastavoimien sävyttäminä organisaation kehitysprosesseina. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on lisätä ymmärrystä organisatorisesta oppimisesta tutkimalla oppimisprosesseihin sisältyviä jännitteitä. Mielenkiinnon kohteena on jännitteiden osallistuminen niin innovatiivista uudistumista ja sopeutuvaa kehittymistä kuin toiminnan vakiinnuttamista tavoittelevaan oppimiseen. Tutkimuksen kohteena on kaksi teollisuusyritystä, joista tiedonkeruu tehtiin teemahaastatteluin. Tutkimuksessa painottui suorittavan tason työntekijän näkökulma. Empiirisestä aineistosta konstruoitiin organisatorisia oppimisprosesseja tulkitsemalla yksilöiden ja organisaation oppimisen välistä vuorovaikutusta. Yrityksittäin konstruoidut oppimisprosessit rinnastettiin yritysten tavoiterakenteen kautta ja analysoitiin jännitteiden osallistumista oppimisprosessien etenemiseen organisaatioissa. Organisatoriset oppimisprosessit - sekä organisaatiota uudistava innovatiivinen ja kehittävä sopeutuva oppiminen että vakiinnuttava mukautuva oppiminen - näyttäytyvät tutkimuksen tulosten valossa erilaisten jännitteiden sävyttäminä. Tulokset osoittavat, että perinteisessä mekaanisessa organisaatiossa aikaisempien tutkimusten luontaisena pitämä vakiinnuttava ja mukautuva oppiminen ei ole ongelmatonta ja itsestään sujuvaa. Myös se on jännitteiden sävyttämä. Organisaation viralliset ja sosiaaliset rakenteet voivat mukauttaa yksilöiden toiminnan. Vakiinnuttavan oppimisprosessin etenemiseen osallistuu kuitenkin jännitteitä, joita syntyy ennen kaikkea työntekijöiden toiminnan ja asenteiden sekä yrityksen tuotanto- ja oppimistavoitteiden välisistä ristiriidoista. Tulokset antavat aihetta pohtia vakiinnuttavan oppimisen asemaa suhteessa uudistavaan ja kehittävään oppimiseen. Vakiinnuttavan oppimisen toteutuminen organisaatiossa pelkästään rakenteiden mukauttavalla voimalla voi heikentää organisaation mahdollisuuksia kehittyä ja uudistua. Työntekijöiden toimimista organisaation oppimisen agentteina ja uudistavan oppimisen käynnistäjinä voisi edesauttaa oppimista tukevin organisatorisin mekanismein, jotka edistävät työntekijöiden käsitteellistä oppimista ja jännitteiden hyödyntämistä vakiinnuttavassa oppimisprosessissa.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have played very important role in restructuring the pulp and paper industry (PPI). The poor performance and fragmented nature of the industry, overcapacity problems, and globalisation have driven companies to consolidate. The objective of this thesis was to examine how PPI acquirers’ have performed subsequent M&As and whether the deal characteristics have had any impact on performance. Based on the results it seems that PPI companies have not been able to enhance their performance in the long run after M&As although the per-formance of acquiring firms has remained above the industry median, and deal characteristics or the amount of premiums paid do not seem to have had any effect. The statistical significance of the results was tested with change model and regression analysis. Performance was assessed with accrual, cash flow, and market based indicators. Results are congruent with behavioural theory: managers and investors seem to be overoptimistic in determining the synergies from M&As.

The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean Snake cel, Ophichthus Rufus (Ophichthidae), was studied on the basis of microscopic and macroscopic analysis. Results show that O.rufus is an oviparous species with a group synchronous ovary type. The maturation process of the gonads starts in December and progress until August, when ovulation and a pawing take place. It is a fractional spawned with buoyant eggs. Potential annual fecundity estimates ranged from 1426 to 23.605 oocytes. Except for small sizes, a clear predominance of females was observed

The aim of this study is to describe the structure of the pharmacy industry in four post-Soviet states on the Baltic Sea: Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In addition to this, the opportunities that these markets have to offer for international pharmaceutical companies are explored. After the Soviet Union collapsed at the beginning of 1990s, the pharmacy sector has gone through tremendous changes. The pharmacy market shifted from a centrally controlled, one supplier system to an industry in which multiple distributors are competing in importing, wholesaling, and retailing of medicinal products. In the Baltic States, the number of pharmacies has not increased during the last years and companies have been growing mainly by acquisitions. Especially in Estonia the market is saturated and price competition is fierce. Similarly, in Latvia and Lithuania, markets are consolidating and wholesalers are growingly taking part in retailing by acquiring smaller chains. In Russia, the market is still fragmented and only one national pharmacy chain can be named, pharmacy chain “36.6”. Pharmacy chains are growing mostly through organic growth and competition between the biggest players is relatively low. The Russian market clearly offers many opportunities for international pharmaceutical operators. The ageing population, growing level of income, and changing living habits are creating new and growing needs for modern healthcare services and products.

This article describes a photocatalytic nanostructured anatase coating deposited by cold gas spray (CGS)supported on titanium sub-oxide (TiO22x) coatings obtained by atmospheric plasma spray (APS) onto stainless steel cylinders. The photocatalytic coating was homogeneous and preserved the composition and nanostructure of the starting powder. The inner titanium sub-oxide coating favored the deposition of anatase particles in the solid state. Agglomerated nano-TiO2 particles fragmented when impacting onto the hard surface of the APS TiO22x bond coat. The rough surface provided by APS provided an ideal scenario for entrapping the nanostructured particles, which may be adhered onto the bond coat due to chemical bonding; a possible bonding mechanism is described. Photocatalytic experiments showed that CGS nano-TiO2 coating was active for photodegrading phenol and formic acid under aqueous conditions. The results were similar to the performance obtained by competitor technologies and materials such as dip-coating P25 photocatalysts. Disparity in the final performance of the photoactive materials may have been caused by differences in grain size and the crystalline composition of titanium dioxide.
