BACKGROUND: Lithium augmentation of antidepressants for treatment of unipolar major depression was one of the first adjunctive strategies based on a neuropharmacologic rationale. Randomized controlled trials supported its efficacy but most trials added lithium to tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Despite its efficacy, use of lithium augmentation remains infrequent. The current systematic review and meta-analysis examines the efficacy of lithium augmentation as an adjunct to second generation antidepressants as well as to TCAs and considers reasons for its infrequent use. METHOD: A systematic search of Medline and the Cochrane Clinical Trials database was performed. Randomized, placebo-controlled trials of lithium augmentation were selected. A fixed-effects meta-analysis was performed. Odds ratios for response were calculated for each treatment-control contrast, for the trials grouped by type of initial antidepressant (TCA or second generation antidepressant), and as a meta-analytic summary for all treatments combined. RESULTS: Nine trials that included 237 patients were selected. The odds ratio for response to lithium vs. placebo in all contrasts combined was 2.89 (95% CI 1.65, 5.05, z=3.72, p=0.0002). Heterogeneity was very low, I(2)=0%. Adjunctive lithium was effective with TCAs (7 contrasts) and with second generation agents (3 contrasts). Discontinuation due to adverse events was infrequent and did not differ between lithium and placebo. LIMITATIONS: The meta-analysis is limited by the small size and number of trials and limited data for treatment resistant patients. CONCLUSIONS: Adjunctive lithium appears to be as effective for second generation antidepressants as it was for the tricyclics.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on hakea muuttujia ja muodostaa käsitteitä strategiselle investoinnille Suomen metsäteollisuudessa. Tutkimuksessa käytetään käsiteanalyyttistä tutkimusotetta. Tutkielma jakautuu teoreettiseen ja empiiriseen osaan. Kirjallisuudessa esitetyt näkemykset ovat tutkielman empiirisen osan perustana. Tutkimuksen empiirinen tieto perustuu Suomen metsäteollisuusyrityksien investointitoiminnasta vastaavien henkilöiden haastatteluihin. Tutkielmassa pyritään analyysin ja synteesin avulla kohti uusia käsitejärjestelmiä ja viitekehyksiä. Tutkimuksen toimeksiantaja on UPM-Kymmene Oyj. Tutkielman empiirinen osa tukee teoriassa esitettyjä määritelmiä ja löydettyjä muuttujia. Esille nousi erityisesti strategisen investointi -käsitteen muuttuminen viime vuosina. Painopiste on siirtynyt teknologiapainotteisista investoinneista uusien markkina-alueiden valtaamiseen suunnattuihin strategisiin investointeihin.

Tutkielman tavoitteena oli tutkia ja analysoida kirjallisuuden pohjalta reaalioptioteoriaa ja sen käyttömahdollisuuksia reaali-investointien arvioinnisa yleensä ja erityisesti aineettomien investointien ryhmään kuuluvaan tutkimus- ja tuotekehitysinvestointeihin liittyvässä päätöksenteossa. Näkökulmana oli, että tuotekehityshankkeet nähdään investointeina. Tutkielma toteutettiin teoreettisena kirjallisuustutkimuksna ja tutkimusmetodologia oli lähinnä käsiteanalyyttinen. Lähdeaineistona käytettiin pääasiassa ulkomaisten tieteellisten aikakausjulkaisujen artikkeleita sekä investointi- ja rahoitusalan oppikirjoja. Reaalioptioteorian mahdollisuudet reaali-investointien, ja erityisesti tuotekehityshankkeiden, arviointiin näyttävät hyvin lupaavilta monien alan tutkijoiden mukaan. Esille nousi kuitenkin erilaisia ongelmia sovellettaessa teoriaa käytännön tilanteisiin. Teorian ja käytännön tuleekin vielä lähestyä toisiaan.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli analysoida tavaratalokaupan strategisia menestystekijöitä, erityisesti tavarataloliiketoiminnan johtamisen merkitystä strategisena menestystekijänä. Empiirinen sovellus suunnattiin Sokos-tavarataloketjuun. Tutkimuksen osatavoitteena oli kuvata ja analysoida Sokos-tavarataloketjun liiketoiminnan kehittymistä 1970 - 1990 välisellä ajanjaksolla sekä pohtia syitä, miksi Sokos-liiketoiminta ajautui kriisiin 1990-luvun aikana. Vertailuksi otettiin Stockmann-tavarataloketjun menestyminen vastaavalla ajanjaksolla Tarkastelun kohteena oli johtamisen muuttuminen, liikeideamuutokset, ketjutoiminnan sekä hankinnan roolin muutokset Sokos-ketjussa. Lopuksi tavoitteena oli arvioida strategisen johtamisen onnistumista Sokos-ketjussa peilaten strategisten menesty stekij öiden viitekehykseen. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan toiminta-analyyttinenja sen aineistonkeruumenetelmänä käytettiin puolistrukturoitua haastattelua. Haastatteluja suoritettiin yhteensä kahdeksan.Empiirinen osa koostuu S-ryhmääja erityisesti Sokos-tavaratalokauppaa käsittelevästä materiaalista, kilpailustrategioiden kuvauksista, vuosikertomuksista ja kokousmuistioista sekä kahdeksan Sokos-ketjussa 90-luvulla johtavassa asemassa toimineen henkilön haastatteluista. Empiiristä aineistoa on kerätty myös yleisistä vähittäiskauppaa koskevista alan lehdistä ja artikkeleista sekä Stockmann- tavarataloketjun vuosikertomuksista. Tutkimuksessa todettiin kohdeyrityksen vaikeuksiin ajautumisen taustalta löytyvän voimakkaan talouslaman lisäksi kilpailutilanteen voimakas muuttuminen, johon ei kyetty riittävästi vastaamaan. Suunnanmuutoksia kilpailustrategiaan tehtiin useaan otteeseen, mutta kaikissa vaiheissa käytännön toteutus jäi puolinaiseksi. Ylivoimaisten kilpailuetujen rakentaminen onnistui heikosti.

Monte Carlo simulations were used to generate data for ABAB designs of different lengths. The points of change in phase are randomly determined before gathering behaviour measurements, which allows the use of a randomization test as an analytic technique. Data simulation and analysis can be based either on data-division-specific or on common distributions. Following one method or another affects the results obtained after the randomization test has been applied. Therefore, the goal of the study was to examine these effects in more detail. The discrepancies in these approaches are obvious when data with zero treatment effect are considered and such approaches have implications for statistical power studies. Data-division-specific distributions provide more detailed information about the performance of the statistical technique.

The classical theory of collision induced emission (CIE) from pairs of dissimilar rare gas atoms was developed in Paper I [D. Reguera and G. Birnbaum, J. Chem. Phys. 125, 184304 (2006)] from a knowledge of the straight line collision trajectory and the assumption that the magnitude of the dipole could be represented by an exponential function of the inter-nuclear distance. This theory is extended here to deal with other functional forms of the induced dipole as revealed by ab initio calculations. Accurate analytical expression for the CIE can be obtained by least square fitting of the ab initio values of the dipole as a function of inter-atomic separation using a sum of exponentials and then proceeding as in Paper I. However, we also show how the multi-exponential fit can be replaced by a simpler fit using only two analytic functions. Our analysis is applied to the polar molecules HF and HBr. Unlike the rare gas atoms considered previously, these atomic pairs form stable bound diatomic molecules. We show that, interestingly, the spectra of these reactive molecules are characterized by the presence of multiple peaks. We also discuss the CIE arising from half collisions in excited electronic states, which in principle could be probed in photo-dissociation experiments.

The objectives of the study were to introduce current issues of chilled and frozen food packaging, priorize certain customer needs and review brand owners’ opinions and ways of actions. Packaging industry and packaged food markets were reviewed. Interviews of food industry brand owners are used as data sources. Analytic hierarchy process was used to prioritize the customer needs. Food packaging, special features of ready meals, chilled and frozen food packaging, packaging industry and packaged food markets in Europe are approached using literature and market reviews and forecasts. In empirical part the customer needs of paperboard trays are prioritized. The most important features for brand owners are related in product safety and environmental issues. Paperboard trays have benefits compared to its competing packaging solutions. Paperboard is recyclable, from renewable source and it has good printability. Emerging issues of packaging technology are biodegradable package, elderly friendly features such as easiness of opening and re-closing possibility, brand protection and tamper evident solutions.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on selvittää asiakasarvoa luovat kasvumahdollisuudet eräälle suomalaiselle liikkeenjohdon konsulttiyritykselle. Yrityksen kasvun tulee tapahtua pitkällä aikavälillä kannattavasti ja tukea sen toimintaa sekä liiketoiminnallisia tavoitteita. Työn teoreettiset aihealueet käsittelevät liikkeenjohdon konsultoinnin toimialaa, arvon luomista ja menestymisen edellytyksiä, asiakaspohjaa ja yhteistyömahdollisuuksia sekä kasvun johtamista. Työn empiirisessä osassa näitä aihealueita tutkittiin yrityksestä saatavien havaintojen, asiakaskyselyn sekä osakashaastattelujen avulla. Asiakasarvoa luovien kasvuvaihtoehtojen määrittämisessä käytettiin apuna analyyttistä hierarkiaprosessia. Tutkimuksen keskeisimmät havainnot olivat, että konsultointipalveluiden asiakasarvoa eniten luovat tekijät tärkeysjärjestyksessä ovat lopputuloksen laatu, ihmisten sitouttaminen kehitykseen, toimialaosaaminen, asenne, uudet näkökulmat ja osaaminen sekä hinta. Kohdeyritykselle tutkittiin viittä kasvuvaihtoehtoa ja niiden asiakasarvon tuottamiskykyä. Suositeltavat kasvuvaihtoehdot kohdeyritykselle tärkeysjärjestyksessä ovat asiakaspohjan säilyttäminen, uusien asiakkaiden hankkiminen sekä verkostojen ja allianssien hyödyntäminen.

By theorems of Ferguson and Lacey ($d=2$) and Lacey and Terwilleger ($d>2$), Nehari's theorem is known to hold on the polydisc $\D^d$ for $d>1$, i.e., if $H_\psi$ is a bounded Hankel form on $H^2(\D^d)$ with analytic symbol $\psi$, then there is a function $\varphi$ in $L^\infty(\T^d)$ such that $\psi$ is the Riesz projection of $\varphi$. A method proposed in Helson's last paper is used to show that the constant $C_d$ in the estimate $\|\varphi\|_\infty\le C_d \|H_\psi\|$ grows at least exponentially with $d$; it follows that there is no analogue of Nehari's theorem on the infinite-dimensional polydisc.

Integrating single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) p-values from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) across genes and pathways is a strategy to improve statistical power and gain biological insight. Here, we present Pascal (Pathway scoring algorithm), a powerful tool for computing gene and pathway scores from SNP-phenotype association summary statistics. For gene score computation, we implemented analytic and efficient numerical solutions to calculate test statistics. We examined in particular the sum and the maximum of chi-squared statistics, which measure the strongest and the average association signals per gene, respectively. For pathway scoring, we use a modified Fisher method, which offers not only significant power improvement over more traditional enrichment strategies, but also eliminates the problem of arbitrary threshold selection inherent in any binary membership based pathway enrichment approach. We demonstrate the marked increase in power by analyzing summary statistics from dozens of large meta-studies for various traits. Our extensive testing indicates that our method not only excels in rigorous type I error control, but also results in more biologically meaningful discoveries.

Typically, conflicts in world environmental negotiations are related, amongst other aspects, to the level of polarization of the countries in groups with conflicting interests. Given the predictable relationship between polarization and conflict, it would seem logical to evaluate the degree to which the distribution of countries – for example, in terms of their CO2 emissions per capita – would be structured through groups which in themselves are antagonistic, as well as their evolution over time. This paper takes the concept of polarization to explore this distribution for the period 1992-2010, looking at different analytic approaches related to the concept. Specifically, it makes a comparative evaluation of the results associated with endogenous multi-polarization measures (i.e. EGR and DER indices), exogenous measures (i.e. Z-K or multidimensional index) and strict bipolarization measures (i.e. Wolfson’s measure). Indeed, the interest lies not only in evaluating the global situation of polarization by comparing the different approaches and their temporal patterns, but also in examining the explanatory capacity of the different proxy groups used as a possible reference for designing global environmental policy from a group premise. Avec cette thèse de doctorat nous proposons une réflexion transversale concernant les relations entre infrastructures de transport et développement territorial dans des espaces dits « intermédiaires ». Le concept d'espace intermédiaire, relativement nouveau en géographie, est conçu en fonction d'une double approche : celle des infrastructures où les espaces intermédiaires constituent des zones de transit obligées entre des pôles urbains hiérarchiquement supérieurs (par rapport une échelle horizontale) et celle des frontières où les espaces intermédiaires constituent des territoires de coopération entre différents niveaux politico-institutionnels (par rapport à une échelle verticale). Cette problématique de recherche est traitée aussi bien du point de vue théorique qu'avec des études de cas portant sur les effets des nouvelles infrastructures de transports dans la région transfrontalière insubrique (entre le Canton du Tessin et la Lombardie). L'objectif visé est de défendre un scénario d'organisation spatiale polycentrique à plusieurs niveaux comme solution pour le développement durable et cohérent de ces espaces intermédiaires. Ainsi, pour le « niveau macro », nous proposons une analyse des changements d'accessibilité spatiale et des potentiels de développement territorial pour les agglomérations concernées par la mise en service du nouveau tunnel ferroviaire de base du Monte Ceneri (TBC) et de la nouvelle ligne Lugano/Como-Mendrisio-Varese-Malpensa (FMV) à l'horizon 2020. Pour le « niveau meso », nous analysons les effets de la nouvelle ligne FMV en termes de potentiel de densification polycentrique autours des gares ferroviaires. Pour le « niveau micro », nous proposons une analyse sur les comportements de mobilité ainsi que des améliorations ciblées du système de transport pour la ville de Mendrisio visant à promouvoir le développement polycentrique de cette commune. De plus, un système d'analyse permettant de mettre en lien les divers facteurs explicatifs dans l'analyse des relations entre les nouvelles infrastructures de transport et les effets sur la mobilité et le développement territorial est également élaboré et testé dans notre recherche. -- With this Ph.D. thesis we investigate the relationship between transport infrastructures and territory development inside the so called "in-between spaces". The idea of "in-between space", relatively novel in geography, is the formal outcome of a double approach: the one of the infrastructures, saying that these spaces can be described as areas of constrained transit between urban centres of superior hierarchical level (on a horizontal scale), and the one of the borders, stating that in-between spaces are areas of cooperation between various political-institutional levels. The above mentioned research issues are deepened both at theoretical and empirical level, being the latter based on field studies of the cross-boundary Western-Lombard area (between the Swiss canton of Ticino and the Italian region of Lombardy). This research pursues the goal of defending the argument that a multi-level polycentric spatial scenario can be a possible solution fora sustainable development of the above described in- between areas. From a "macro" perspective, what we submit here is an analysis on the expected changes in spatial accessibility and on the potential territorial development for the built-up areas influenced by the construction of the new train tunnel of the Monte Ceneri (TBC) and of the new railway line Lugano/Como-Mendrisio-Varese-Malpensa (FMV). At a "meso" level we analyse the effects exerted by the new FMV line taking into account the potential densification of the areas surrounding the railway stations. Finally, at a "micro" level, we analyse the mobility behaviours in the town of Mendrisio and we propose some possible improvements to the local public transport system, with the scope to promote a polycentric development of this municipality. Moreover, we developed and tested an analytic system able to define the existing links between the various explaining factors characterizing the relationship between new transport infrastructures and effects on mobility. -- With this Ph.D. thesis we investigate the relationship between transport infrastructures and territory development inside the so called "in-between spaces". Much like the first volume published in 2011, the second volume of this anthology series gathers a selection of analyses which are empirically based on the data of the Swiss panel study TREE (Transitions from Education to Employment). The contributions of this volume carry on the investigation of the critical transitions during youth and young adulthood, drawing on sociological, economic, psychological and pedagogical research questions and thus highlighting the analytic and pluri-disciplinary research potential of the TREE data. One of the topical foci is the long-term influence of social origin on education and labour market pathways, particularly with regard to access to higher education.

The process of coarsening of an ensemble of clusters is investigated for the case that elastic strains due to matrix - cluster interactions change the process qualitatively as compared with dependencies established theoretically first by Lifshitz and Slezov. Such a qualitatively different behavior occurs always when the energy of elastic deformation in cluster growth increases more rapidly than linear with the volume of a cluster. Analytic solutions, for limiting cases, as well as numerical solutions, for the general case of coarsening in an ensemble of pores with a given pore size distribution, are presented. Possible applications are discussed.

A partir de l’estudi general de l’obra d’Aleksandr Scriabin i a partir de l’anàlisi particular de la Sonata núm. 9 així com de les distintes influències que va tenir, el treball pretén fer una valoració de com caldria interpretar la Sonata núm. 9. És per això que hom fa una introducció general a la vida de Scriabin i el situa en el seu context històric; estudia el seu interès per la filosofia i com aquesta va influir en la seva obra. Alhora hom analitza la faceta de Scriabin com a pianista i en revisa l’obra com a compositor. La segona part del treball, pròpiament analítica, entra en la qüestió de les sonates i la importància que adquireixen en tota la seva obra per tal de centrar-se, en el darrer punt, en la Sonata núm. 9 i l’enfocament interpretatiu que podria tenir. Aquí, a partir del que prèviament s’ha estudiat, hom proposa una possibilitat interpretativa. En relació a aquest punt es comparen interpretacions de diversos pianistes.
