The implementation of warm-mix asphalt (WMA) is becoming more widespread with a growing number of contractors utilizing various WMA technologies. Early research suggests WMA may be more susceptible to moisture damage than traditional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixes. The objectives of this study are to test the binder and mix properties of WMA technologies for both field- and laboratory-produced mixes to determine the performance of WMA compared to traditional HMA. Field- and laboratory-produced mixes were studied. The laboratory-produced mixes compared HMA control mixes with WMA mixes that had the same mix design. The WMA technologies used for the laboratory study were Advera, Sasobit, and Evotherm. The field study tested four WMA field-produced mixes. Each of the four mixes had a corresponding control HMA mix. The WMA technologies used in the field study included: Evotherm 3G/Revix, Sasobit, and Double Barrel Green Foaming. The three main factors for this study were WMA/HMA, moisture-conditioned/not moisture-conditioned, and reheated/not reheated. Mixes were evaluated based on performance tests. Binder testing was performed to determine the rheological differences between HMA and WMA binders to determine if binder grade requirements change with the addition of WMA additives. The conclusions of this study are as follows: Reduced mixing and compaction temperatures were achieved. Statistical differences were found when comparing tensile strength ratio (TSR) values for both laboratory- and field-produced mixes. In the laboratory, none of the WMA additives performed as well as the HMA. For the field mixes, all TSR values passed Iowa’s minimum specification of 0.8 but, on average, WMA is lower compared to HMA TSR values. Dynamic modulus results show that, on average, HMA will have higher dynamic modulus values. This means the HMA exhibits stiffer material properties compared to WMA; this may not necessarily mean superior performance in all cases. Flow number results show that WMA has reduced flow number values compared to HMA. The only exception was the fourth field mix and weather delayed production of the control mix by nine days. The laboratory mixes showed that flow number values increased significantly with the addition of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). In the laboratory study, Advera reduced TSR values. Given that Advera is a foaming agent, the increase in moisture susceptibility is likely attributed to the release of water necessary for the improvement of the workability of the asphalt mixture.

In addition to the Fair Housing Act of 1968, other legislation has expanded protection from discrimination for individuals with disabilities, including the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Notably, the Fair Housing Amendments Act (FHAA), signed into law by Ronald Reagan in 1988, expanded equal housing protection to individuals with disabilities. The legislative history behind the 1988 Amendments notes that one aim of the law was to address both purposeful discrimination as well as what is sometimes unintentional discrimination caused by the design and construction of inaccessible housing.

L'époque charnière de la fin du xive siècle, début du xve siècle, voit émerger des voix auctoriales de plus en plus engagées, subjectives et conscientes de leur talent. Cet article tend à montrer en quoi la notion d'ethos issue de la linguistique moderne permet de caractériser l'évolution d'une de ces voix médiévales, celle d'un traducteur du xve siècle, Laurent de Premierfait, au regard de la tradition. L'étude des prologues de ses traductions témoigne d'une forte influence de la situation de communication et de la scène d'énonciation, celle du patronage et de la tradition poétique héritée de la traduction du xive siècle, qui oblige le traducteur à négocier sa propre image dans son texte. Ainsi, l'auteure de cet article propose de caractériser à travers différents indices rhétoriques, poétiques, discursifs, voire extra-discursifs, les deux êthê qui émanent de ces prologues : un ethos de moraliste, conforme aux attentes du public et un ethos d'humaniste, révélant un positionnement singulier et individuel du traducteur dans la communauté des écrivains.

L'objectif de ma contribution est de mettre en lumière le processus de construction de la figure du sorcier, qui répond à une double logique d'accumulations et d'exagérations des accusations. Ces dernières renvoient à quatre registres principaux, à commencer par celui de la diabolisation des pratiques de magie et de sorcellerie. Par ailleurs, le sabbat des sorcières est perçu comme une anti-église démoniaque qui réunit une secte éminemment dangereuse d'hérétiques et d'apostats qui ont conclu un pacte avec le diable. Le fantasme du complot ou de la rébellion contribue alors à construire la peur des sectes de sorciers. Enfin, le registre de la contre-nature, tels les crimes immoraux ou tabous associés aux méfaits des sorciers (comportements sexuels déviants, infanticide et cannibalisme d'enfants), favorise quant à lui le dénigrement des individus.

The purpose of this project was to investigate the potential for collecting and using data from mobile terrestrial laser scanning (MTLS) technology that would reduce the need for traditional survey methods for the development of highway improvement projects at the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). The primary interest in investigating mobile scanning technology is to minimize the exposure of field surveyors to dangerous high volume traffic situations. Issues investigated were cost, timeframe, accuracy, contracting specifications, data capture extents, data extraction capabilities and data storage issues associated with mobile scanning. The project area selected for evaluation was the I-35/IA 92 interchange in Warren County, Iowa. This project covers approximately one mile of I-35, one mile of IA 92, 4 interchange ramps, and bridges within these limits. Delivered LAS and image files for this project totaled almost 31GB. There is nearly a 6-fold increase in the size of the scan data after post-processing. Camera data, when enabled, produced approximately 900MB of imagery data per mile using a 2- camera, 5 megapixel system. A comparison was done between 1823 points on the pavement that were surveyed by Iowa DOT staff using a total station and the same points generated through the MTLS process. The data acquired through the MTLS and data processing met the Iowa DOT specifications for engineering survey. A list of benefits and challenges is included in the detailed report. With the success of this project, it is anticipate[d] that additional projects will be scanned for the Iowa DOT for use in the development of highway improvement projects.

Ramp metering has been successfully implemented in many states to improve traffic operations on freeways. Studies have documented the positive mobility and safety benefits of ramp metering. However, there have been no studies on the use of ramp metering for work zones. This report documents the results from the first deployment of temporary ramp meters in work zones in the United States. Temporary ramp meters were deployed at seven urban short-term work zones in Missouri. Safety measures such as driver compliance, merging behavior, and speed differentials were extracted from video-based field data. Mobility analysis was conducted using a calibrated simulation model and the total delays were obtained for under capacity, at capacity, and over capacity conditions. This evaluation suggests that temporary ramp meters should only be deployed at work zone locations where there is potential for congestion and turned on only during above-capacity conditions. The compliance analysis showed that non-compliance could be a major safety issue in the deployment of temporary ramp meters for under-capacity conditions. The use of a three-section instead of a traditional two-section signal head used for permanent ramp metering produced significantly higher compliance rates. Ramp metering decreased ramp platoons by increasing the percentage of single-vehicle merges to over 70% from under 50%. The accepted-merge-headway results were not statistically significant even though a slight shift towards longer headways was found with the use of ramp meters. Mobility analysis revealed that ramp metering produced delay savings for both mainline and ramp vehicles for work zones operating above capacity. On average a 24% decrease in total delay (mainline plus ramp) at low truck percentage and a 19% decrease in delay at high truck percentage conditions resulted from ramp metering.

Longitudinal joint quality control/assurance is essential to the successful performance of asphalt pavements and it has received considerable amount of attention in recent years. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the level of compaction at the longitudinal joint and determine the effect of segregation on the longitudinal joint performance. Five paving projects with the use of traditional butt joint, infrared joint heater, edge restraint by milling and modified butt joint with the hot pinch longitudinal joint construction techniques were selected in this study. For each project, field density and permeability tests were made and cores from the pavement were obtained for in-lab permeability, air void and indirect tensile strength. Asphalt content and gradations were also obtained to determine the joint segregation. In general, this study finds that the minimum required joint density should be around 90.0% of the theoretical maximum density based on the AASHTO T166 method. The restrained-edge by milling and butt joint with the infrared heat treatment construction methods both create the joint density higher than this 90.0% limit. Traditional butt joint exhibits lower density and higher permeability than the criterion. In addition, all of the projects appear to have segregation at the longitudinal joint except for the edge-restraint by milling method.

The US Highway 6 Bridge over Keg Creek outside of Council Bluffs, Iowa is a demonstration bridge site chosen to put into practice newly-developed Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) concepts. One of these new concepts is the use of prefabricated high performance concrete (HPC) bridge elements that are connected, in place, utilizing advanced material closure-pours and quick-to-install connection details. The Keg Creek Bridge is the first bridge in the US to utilize moment-resisting ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) joints in negative moment regions over piers. Through laboratory and live load field testing, performance of these transverse joints as well as global bridge behavior is quantified and examined. The effectiveness of the structural performance of the bridge is evaluated to provide guidance for future designs of similar bridges throughout the US.

This paper explores analytically the contemporary pottery-making community of Pereruela (north-west Spain) that produces cooking pots from a mixture of red clay and kaolin. Analyses by different techniques (XRF, NAA, XRD, SEM and petrography) showed an extremely high variability for cooking ware pottery produced in a single production centre, by the same technology and using local clays. The main source of chemical variation is related to the use of different red clays and the presence of non-normally distributed inclusions of monazite. These two factors induce a high chemical variability, not only in the output of a single production centre, but even in the paste of a single pot, to an extent to which chemical compositions from one"workshop", or even one"pot", could be classified as having different provenances. The implications for the chemical characterization and for provenance studies of archaeological ceramics are addressed.

Highway construction is among the most dangerous industries in the US. Internal traffic control design, along with how construction equipment and vehicles interact with the traveling public, have a significant effect on how safe a highway construction work zone can be. An integrated approach was taken to research work-zone safety issues and mobility, including input from many personnel, ranging from roadway designers to construction laborers and equipment operators. The research team analyzed crash data from Iowa work-zone incident reports and Occupational Safety and Health Administration data for the industry in conjunction with the results of personal interviews, a targeted work-zone ingress and egress survey, and a work-zone pilot project.
