This paper addresses advanced control of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge process. Based on a previously validated distributed parameter model of the BNR activated sludge process, we present robust multivariable controller designs for the process, involving loop shaping of plant model, robust stability and performance analyses. Results from three design case studies showed that a multivariable controller with stability margins of 0.163, 0.492 and 1.062 measured by the normalised coprime factor, multiplicative and additive uncertainties respectively give the best results for meeting performance robustness specifications. The controller robustly stabilises effluent nutrients in the presence of uncertainties with the behaviour of phosphorus accumulating organisms as well as to effectively attenuate major disturbances introduced as step changes. This study also shows that, performance of the multivariable robust controller is superior to multi-loops SISO PI controllers for regulating the BNR activated sludge process in terms of robust stability and performance and controlling the process using inlet feed flowrate is infeasible. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are known to locate the global optimal solution provided sufficient population and/or generation is used. Practically, a near-optimal satisfactory result can be found by Gas with a limited number of generations. In wireless communications, the exhaustive searching approach is widely applied to many techniques, such as maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) and distance spectrum (DS) techniques. The complexity of the exhaustive searching approach in the MLD or the DS technique is exponential in the number of transmit antennas and the size of the signal constellation for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. If a large number of antennas and a large size of signal constellations, e.g. PSK and QAM, are employed in the MIMO systems, the exhaustive searching approach becomes impractical and time consuming. In this paper, the GAs are applied to the MLD and DS techniques to provide a near-optimal performance with a reduced computational complexity for the MIMO systems. Two different GA-based efficient searching approaches are proposed for the MLD and DS techniques, respectively. The first proposed approach is based on a GA with sharing function method, which is employed to locate the multiple solutions of the distance spectrum for the Space-time Trellis Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (STTC-OFDM) systems. The second approach is the GA-based MLD that attempts to find the closest point to the transmitted signal. The proposed approach can return a satisfactory result with a good initial signal vector provided to the GA. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed GA-based efficient searching approaches can achieve near-optimal performance, but with a lower searching complexity comparing with the original MLD and DS techniques for the MIMO systems.

Foreign exchange trading has emerged recently as a significant activity in many countries. As with most forms of trading, the activity is influenced by many random parameters so that the creation of a system that effectively emulates the trading process will be very helpful. A major issue for traders in the deregulated Foreign Exchange Market is when to sell and when to buy a particular currency in order to maximize profit. This paper presents novel trading strategies based on the machine learning methods of genetic algorithms and reinforcement learning.

A new approach to identify multivariable Hammerstein systems is proposed in this paper. By using cardinal cubic spline functions to model the static nonlinearities, the proposed method is effective in modelling processes with hard and/or coupled nonlinearities. With an appropriate transformation, the nonlinear models are parameterized such that the nonlinear identification problem is converted into a linear one. The persistently exciting condition for the transformed input is derived to ensure the estimates are consistent with the true system. A simulation study is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method compared with the existing approaches based on polynomials. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We prove upper and lower bounds relating the quantum gate complexity of a unitary operation, U, to the optimal control cost associated to the synthesis of U. These bounds apply for any optimal control problem, and can be used to show that the quantum gate complexity is essentially equivalent to the optimal control cost for a wide range of problems, including time-optimal control and finding minimal distances on certain Riemannian, sub-Riemannian, and Finslerian manifolds. These results generalize the results of [Nielsen, Dowling, Gu, and Doherty, Science 311, 1133 (2006)], which showed that the gate complexity can be related to distances on a Riemannian manifold.

We consider a problem of robust performance analysis of linear discrete time varying systems on a bounded time interval. The system is represented in the state-space form. It is driven by a random input disturbance with imprecisely known probability distribution; this distributional uncertainty is described in terms of entropy. The worst-case performance of the system is quantified by its a-anisotropic norm. Computing the anisotropic norm is reduced to solving a set of difference Riccati and Lyapunov equations and a special form equation.

Processor emulators are a software tool for allowing legacy computer programs to be executed on a modern processor. In the past emulators have been used in trivial applications such as maintenance of video games. Now, however, processor emulation is being applied to safety-critical control systems, including military avionics. These applications demand utmost guarantees of correctness, but no verification techniques exist for proving that an emulated system preserves the original system’s functional and timing properties. Here we show how this can be done by combining concepts previously used for reasoning about real-time program compilation, coupled with an understanding of the new and old software architectures. In particular, we show how both the old and new systems can be given a common semantics, thus allowing their behaviours to be compared directly.

Introductory accounts of artificial neural networks often rely for motivation on analogies with models of information processing in biological networks. One limitation of such an approach is that it offers little guidance on how to find optimal algorithms, or how to verify the correct performance of neural network systems. A central goal of this paper is to draw attention to a quite different viewpoint in which neural networks are seen as algorithms for statistical pattern recognition based on a principled, i.e. theoretically well-founded, framework. We illustrate the concept of a principled viewpoint by considering a specific issue concerned with the interpretation of the outputs of a trained network. Finally, we discuss the relevance of such an approach to the issue of the validation and verification of neural network systems.

We have proposed a novel robust inversion-based neurocontroller that searches for the optimal control law by sampling from the estimated Gaussian distribution of the inverse plant model. However, for problems involving the prediction of continuous variables, a Gaussian model approximation provides only a very limited description of the properties of the inverse model. This is usually the case for problems in which the mapping to be learned is multi-valued or involves hysteritic transfer characteristics. This often arises in the solution of inverse plant models. In order to obtain a complete description of the inverse model, a more general multicomponent distributions must be modeled. In this paper we test whether our proposed sampling approach can be used when considering an arbitrary conditional probability distributions. These arbitrary distributions will be modeled by a mixture density network. Importance sampling provides a structured and principled approach to constrain the complexity of the search space for the ideal control law. The effectiveness of the importance sampling from an arbitrary conditional probability distribution will be demonstrated using a simple single input single output static nonlinear system with hysteretic characteristics in the inverse plant model.
