Increasingly in power systems, there is a trend towards the sharing of reserves and integration of markets over wide areas in order to enable increased penetration of renewable sources in interconnected power systems. In this paper, a number of simple PI and gain based Model Predictive Control algorithms are proposed for Automatic Generation Control in AC areas connected to Multi-Terminal Direct Current grids. The paper discusses how this approach improves the sharing of secondary reserves and could assist in achieving EU energy targets for 2030 and beyond.

The role of the director as the individual who harnesses and controls resources to shape the theatrical product to a personal artistic vision, begins to emerge in British theatre in the early years of the twentieth century. What distinguishes the role from that of the actor-manager who had led the profession since the seventeenth century, is that it separates off from the leading actor in performance. The power and authority of the director (or producer as he or she tended to be known initially) is exercised in the pre-performance stage. In the first half of the century there were still old-style actor-managers—Donald Wolfit is a prime example—and many of the new directors had begun their careers as actors and some continued to act their in their own productions. But the perception of the function of the director began to change radically. In part this was linked to the early attempts to create a new model of producing company or ‘repertory’ theatre which required a different set of administrative as well as artistic skills to tackle the challenge of a short-run system of multiple play production. This became especially important in the developing network of regional repertory theatres which were established as autonomous, locally-specific institutions predicated on policies opposed to the dominant commercial ethos. The best-known of the early directors, most notably H.Granville Barker, confined their radical experiments to short-lived metropolitan experiments, or, as in the case of Terence Gray and J.B.Fagan, operated within the influential Oxbridge nexus. Others such as H.K.Ayliff, Herbert Prentice, William Armstrong and William Bridges-Adams remain comparatively obscure because of their long-term ‘provincial’ connections or, as in the case of Nugent Monck and Edy Craig because their creativity was largely channelled through amateur actors. This chapter will explore the evolving role of the director as both a necessary functionary and an artistic innovator within the changing structures of British theatre.

The fisheries sector is vital to the Philippine economy, providing substantial employment and income, contributing export earnings, and meeting local food security and nutrition requirements. To protect coastal and marine habitat and to sustain fisheries, over 1000 marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established, in the Philippines. This paper provides empirical evidence on the variance of net revenues linked with MPA establishment and the possible range of relocation costs for fishing effort displaced by an MPA. A total of 424 households were randomly selected from 18 barangays (villages) adjacent to MPAs in three regions in the Philippines. Results show that incomes decrease significantly for both fulltime and seasonal types of fishers after 1-3 years of MPA establishment. The loss occurring through MPA is higher than expected and at least on the short run (up to 4 years) the spill-over effect does not compensate. This information helped to determine the necessary conditional cash transfers for coastal communities who are highly dependent on coastal and marine resources.

Chylothorax is characterized by an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the pleural cavity due to damage to the thoracic duct. The aetiology can be traumatic or non-traumatic. Goitre is a rare cause of chylothorax with only eight cases previously described in the literature including only one case causing a bilateral chylothorax. This report describes a patient with bilateral chylothorax secondary to substernal goitre, which was successfully treated, and discusses this very rare case in light of the available literature.

Despite recent advances in ocean observing arrays and satellite sensors, there remains great uncertainty in the large-scale spatial variations of upper ocean salinity on the interannual to decadal timescales. Consonant with both broad-scale surface warming and the amplification of the global hydrological cycle, observed global multidecadal salinity changes typically have focussed on the linear response to anthropogenic forcing but not on salinity variations due to changes in the static stability and or variability due to the intrinsic ocean or internal climate processes. Here, we examine the static stability and spatiotemporal variability of upper ocean salinity across a hierarchy of models and reanalyses. In particular, we partition the variance into time bands via application of singular spectral analysis, considering sea surface salinity (SSS), the Brunt Väisälä frequency (N2), and the ocean salinity stratification in terms of the stabilizing effect due to the haline part of N2 over the upper 500m. We identify regions of significant coherent SSS variability, either intrinsic to the ocean or in response to the interannually varying atmosphere. Based on consistency across models (CMIP5 and forced experiments) and reanalyses, we identify the stabilizing role of salinity in the tropics—typically associated with heavy precipitation and barrier layer formation, and the role of salinity in destabilizing upper ocean stratification in the subtropical regions where large-scale density compensation typically occurs.

The study examined changes in doctors’ working hours and satisfaction with working hours over five time points and explored the influence of personal characteristics on these outcomes. Latent growth curve modeling was applied to Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life data, collected from 2008 to 2012. Findings showed that working hours significantly declined over time, with a greater decrease among males, older doctors, and doctors with fewer children. Satisfaction increased faster over time among specialists, doctors with poorer health, those whose partners did not work full-time, and those with older children. The more hours the doctors worked initially, the lower satisfaction reported, and the greater the increase in satisfaction. Findings are consistent with a culture change in the medical profession, whereby long working hours are no longer seen as synonymous with professionalism. This is important to take into account in projecting future workforce supply.

An investigation was initiated to evaluate the feasibility of using equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to obtain high superplastic elongations in the AZ31 alloy with a back pressure producing a bimodal grain structure. Processing by ECAP was performed using a die with an angle of 90 ° between the two parts of the channel and a ram velocity of 15-20 mm/sec. Some pressing were conducted with a back-pressure by making use of a backward punch in the exit channel of the die. Molybdenum disulphide and a graphite spray were used as lubricants and billets were pressed using processing route B c in which each billet is rotated by 90 °. The pressing were conducted at temperatures in the range from 423 to 523 K and every billet was quenched in water after each pass. The significance of the bimodal microstructure is attributed to the ability of the larger grains to more easily accommodate grain boundary sliding through intragranular slip and twinning and to contribute to the strain hardening capability.

Densification of metallic powders by means of extrusion is regarded as a very attractive processing technique that allows obtaining a high level of relative density of the compact. However, the uniformity of the relative density depends on that of strain distribution and on the processing parameters. Several variants of extrusion can be used for compaction of metal particulates, including the conventional extrusion (CE) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), often referred to as equal-channel angular extrusion. Each of these processes has certain advantages and drawbacks with respect to compaction. A comparative study of these two extrusion processes influencing the relative density of compacts has been conducted by numerical simulation using commercial finite element software DEFORM2D. The results have been validated by experiments with titanium and magnesium powders and chips.

Among the known severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques, there is a special group of processes involving friction-induced shear. One of the sample or work-piece dimensions used in such processes, namely the thickness, is much smaller than the other two dimensions. The well-known process of High Pressure Torsion (HPT) and the relatively new Cone-Cone (CC) method applied to thin conical samples fall into this category of SPD techniques. Wrought aluminium alloy 2124 was used to study the effect of CC processing on microstructure and mechanical properties. The influence of the processing parameters, including the rotation speed and thickness of the conical strip specimens on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the CC-processed material was investigated.

Five-membered cyclic organic carbonates (COC) are of interest for their ability to modify the surface properties of smectites and enhance the hydraulic resistance of bentonites to saline leachates. The mechanism of interaction of glycerol carbonate (GC) and several other hydroxyl containing cyclic organic carbonates (generally having progressively greater molecular masses) with sodium montmorillonite (Na+-Mt) was studied using powder X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The 001 reflection for GC/Na+-Mt intercalates varied with the amount COC added, and the measured d001 value increased from 1.29 nm to as large as 2.22 nm at equal-mass coverage of the COC to Na+-Mt. In general, when intercalated, the cyclic carbonyl (Cdouble bond; length as m-dashO) stretch and the fundamental hydroxyl (O–H) stretch bands of COC derivatives were red-shifted with respect to these bands for neat COC, indicating strong ion-dipole interaction of the carbonyl group with interlayer Na+, and H-bonding of the OH group with both interlayer water and Mt surfaces. A stable and highly ordered intercalate was produced at a 1:1 mass loading with Mt in which about 6 GC molecules per unit cell (~ 7 molecules per Na+ ion) replaced most of the interlayer water.

Glutamatergic dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of depressive disorders and Huntington's disease (HD), in which depression is the most common psychiatric symptom. Synaptic glutamate homeostasis is regulated by cystine-dependent glutamate transporters, including GLT-1 and system xc (-) In HD, the enzyme regulating cysteine (and subsequently cystine) production, cystathionine-γ-lygase, has recently been shown to be lowered. The aim of the present study was to establish whether cysteine supplementation, using N-acetylcysteine (NAC) could ameliorate glutamate pathology through the cystine-dependent transporters, system xc (-) and GLT-1. We demonstrate that the R6/1 transgenic mouse model of HD has lower basal levels of cystine, and showed depressive-like behaviors in the forced-swim test. Administration of NAC reversed these behaviors. This effect was blocked by co-administration of the system xc (-) and GLT-1 inhibitors CPG and DHK, showing that glutamate transporter activity was required for the antidepressant effects of NAC. NAC was also able to specifically increase glutamate in HD mice, in a glutamate transporter-dependent manner. These in vivo changes reflect changes in glutamate transporter protein in HD mice and human HD post-mortem tissue. Furthermore, NAC was able to rescue changes in key glutamate receptor proteins related to excitotoxicity in HD, including NMDAR2B. Thus, we have shown that baseline reductions in cysteine underlie glutamatergic dysfunction and depressive-like behavior in HD and these changes can be rescued by treatment with NAC. These findings have implications for the development of new therapeutic approaches for depressive disorders.
