We look at plane curve diagrams (f,alpha), which are given by a plane curve multigerm alpha : (R, S) -> R(2) and a function on it f : (R, S) -> R. We obtain a classification of all such diagrams, where alpha has e-codimension <= 2 and f has finite order. Then we define an equivalence between plane curves which we call Ah(alpha)-equivalence and which is determined by the class of the diagram (h(alpha), alpha). Here, h alpha denotes the height function of alpha with respect to its normal vector. This is an equivalence which not only takes into account the topology of the singularity of alpha, but also its flat geometry. Finally, we apply our results in order to obtain a classification of all the plane projections of a generic space curve gamma embedded in R(3).

Electronic properties of a methane-water solution were investigated by a sequential quantum mechanical/molecular dynamics approach. Upon hydration methane acquires an induced dipole moment of similar to 0.5 +/- 0.2 D. This is related to polarisation effects and to weak methane-water hydrogen bond interactions. From gas phase to solution, the first vertical excitation and ionisation energies of methane are red-shifted by 0.45 +/- 0.25 and 0.87 +/- 0.40 eV, respectively. We also report results for the dynamic polarisability of methane in water. In comparison with water, no difference was found for the average monomeric dipole moment of water molecules in close interaction with methane. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective. Given their involvement in pathological and physiological angiogenesis, there has been growing interest in understanding and manipulating endothellial progenitor cells (EPC) for therapeutic purposes. However, detailed molecular analysis of EPC before and during endothelial differentiation is lacking and is the subject of the present study. Materials and Methods. We report a detailed microarray gene-expression profile of freshly isolated (day 0) human cord blood (CB)-derived EPC (CD133(+)KDR(+) or CD34(+)KDR(+)), and at different time points during in vitro differentiation (early: day 13; late: day 27). Results. Data obtained reflect an EPC transcriptome enriched in genes related to stem/progenitor cells properties (chromatin remodeling, self-renewal, signaling, cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis, recruitment, and adhesion). Using a complementary DNA microarray enriched in intronic transcribed sequences, we observed, as well, that naturally transcribed intronic noncoding RNAs were specifically expressed at the EPC stage. Conclusion. Taken together, we have defined the global gene-expression profile of CB-derived EPC during the process of endothelial differentiation, which can be used to identify genes involved in different vascular pathologies. Glossoscolex paulistus hemoglobin (HbGp) was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), optical absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). At pH 7.0, cyanomet-HbGp is very stable, no oligomeric dissociation is observed, while denaturation occurs at 56 degrees C, 4 degrees C higher as compared to oxy-HbGp. The oligomeric dissociation of HbGp occurs simultaneously with some protein aggregation. Kinetic studies for oxy-HbGp using UV-VIS and DES allowed to obtain activation energy (E(a)) values of 278-262 kJ/mol (DES) and 333 kJ/mol (UV-VIS). Complimentary DSC studies indicate that the denaturation is irreversible, giving endotherms strongly dependent upon the heating scan rates, suggesting a kinetically controlled process. Dependence on protein concentration suggests that the two components in the endotherms are due to oligomeric dissociation effect upon denaturation. Activation energies are in the range 200-560 kJ/mol. The mid-point transition temperatures were in the range 50-65 degrees C. Cyanomet-HbGp shows higher mid-point temperatures as well as activation energies, consistent with its higher stability. DSC data are reported for the first time for an extracellular hemoglobin. The extracellular hemoglobin from Glossoscolex paulistus (HbGp) has a molecular mass of 3.6 M Da, It has a high oligomeric stability at pH 7.0 and low autoxidation rates, as compared to vertebrate hemoglobins. In this work, fluorescence and light scattering experiments were performed with the three oxidation forms of HbGp exposed to acidic pH. Our focus is on the HbGp stability at acidic pH and also on the determination of the isoelectric point (pI) of the protein. Our results show that the protein in the cyanomet form is more stable than in the other two forms, in the whole range. Our zeta-potential data are consistent with light scattering results. Average values apt obtained by different techniques were 5.6 +/- 0.5, 5.4 +/- 0.2 and 5.2 +/- 0.5 for the oxy, met, and cyanomet forms. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments have shown that, at pH 6.0, the aggregation (oligomeric) state of oxy-, met- and cyanomet-HbGp remains the same as that at 7.0. The interaction between the oxy-HbGp and ionic surfactants at pH 5.0 and 6.0 was also monitored in the present study. At pH 5,0, below the protein pI, the effects of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) are inverted when compared to pH 7.0. For CTAC, in acid pH 5.0, no precipitation is observed, while for SDS an intense light scattering appears due to a precipitation process. HbGp interacts strongly with the cationic surfactant at pH 7.0 and with the anionic one at pH 5.0. This effect is due to the predominance, in the protein surface, of residues presenting opposite charges to the surfactant headgroups. This information can be relevant for the development of extracellular hemoglobin-based artificial blood substitutes.

This paper reports the second part of a study on the digital design and fabrication of scaled architectural prototypes. The first paper reported techniques in the realization of a double curved vault surface, the Gaussian Vault. The aims of the research here further extend this body of knowledge to a better understanding of constructible components. It addresses the problem of fabricating complex curved forms through the integration of the basic building elements, skin and structure, to achieve a scaled physical prototype. The focus of the experimentation is to investigate the process from which a digital surface form is conceived, to its preparation for fabrication and eventual construction in the fashion of a scaled model or workable prototype.

Virtual and physical prototypes play a significant role in the design of artifacts. This is particularly true in cross-functional team collaboration, where diverse disciplines come together to contribute to the concept, design and development of an artifact. While the role of prototyping in design and cross-functional collaboration has been widely studied independently, little is known of the role that physical prototypes play during cross-functional team collaboration. This paper reports on a study of virtual and physical prototyping strategies used by a cross-functional team comprising engineers and designers working on a concept car project. The paper provides a background of the collaborative design process and details the role of physical prototyping methods during the design of the concept car.

An optimal search theory, the so-called Lévy-flight foraging hypothesis1, predicts that predators should adopt search strategies known as Lévy flights where prey is sparse and distributed unpredictably, but that Brownian movement is sufficiently efficient for locating abundant prey2, 3, 4. Empirical studies have generated controversy because the accuracy of statistical methods that have been used to identify Lévy behaviour has recently been questioned5, 6. Consequently, whether foragers exhibit Lévy flights in the wild remains unclear. Crucially, moreover, it has not been tested whether observed movement patterns across natural landscapes having different expected resource distributions conform to the theory’s central predictions. Here we use maximum-likelihood methods to test for Lévy patterns in relation to environmental gradients in the largest animal movement data set assembled for this purpose. Strong support was found for Lévy search patterns across 14 species of open-ocean predatory fish (sharks, tuna, billfish and ocean sunfish), with some individuals switching between Lévy and Brownian movement as they traversed different habitat types. We tested the spatial occurrence of these two principal patterns and found Lévy behaviour to be associated with less productive waters (sparser prey) and Brownian movements to be associated with productive shelf or convergence-front habitats (abundant prey). These results are consistent with the Lévy-flight foraging hypothesis1, 7, supporting the contention8, 9 that organism search strategies naturally evolved in such a way that they exploit optimal Lévy patterns.

Relatively little is known about the biology and ecology of the world’s largest (heaviest) bony fish, the ocean sunfish Mola mola, despite its worldwide occurrence in temperate and tropical seas. Studies are now emerging that require many common perceptions about sunfish behaviour and ecology to be re-examined. Indeed, the long-held view that ocean sunfish are an inactive, passively drifting species seems to be entirely misplaced. Technological advances in marine telemetry are revealing distinct behavioural patterns and protracted seasonal movements. Extensive forays by ocean sunfish into the deep ocean have been documented and broad-scale surveys, together with molecular and laboratory based techniques, are addressing the connectivity and trophic role of these animals. These emerging molecular and movement studies suggest that local distinct populations may be prone to depletion through bycatch in commercial fisheries. Rising interest in ocean sunfish, highlighted by the increase in recent publications, warrants a thorough review of the biology and ecology of this species. Here we review the taxonomy, morphology, geography, diet, locomotion, vision, movements, foraging ecology, reproduction and species interactions of M. mola. We present a summary of current conservation issues and suggest methods for addressing fundamental gaps in our knowledge.

O contexto atual da sociedade do conhecimento impulsiona as organizações e seus profissionais a buscarem novas de formas de agir para se manterem competitivos. Nessa sociedade, a inteligência, a criatividade e o próprio conhecimento são recursos produtivos essenciais. Às organizações, cabe um esforço no sentido do desenvolvimento de iniciativas para a geração de valor a partir desses recursos intangíveis. Aos profissionais, cabe buscar sua contínua recapacitação, atendendo à necessidade de atuarem como trabalhadores do conhecimento. As universidades corporativas surgiram nesse contexto, como uma abordagem estratégica para a atividade de treinamento e desenvolvimento da organização, acompanhando o realinhamento do sistema de Recursos Humanos, que assumiu um caráter mais estratégico e voltado para o negócio. Os objetivos dessa pesquisa envolvem a compreensão do que são e como funcionam as universidades corporativas no Brasil, analisando seu papel na gestão do conhecimento da organização. Verificou-se que essas instituições são uma evolução do sistema de treinamento e desenvolvimento e não atuam, ainda, como gestoras do conhecimento organizacional. A denominação "universidade" adotada por elas confere-lhes certo status, contudo constatou-se que as universidades corporativas não exploraram o potencial que conceito de universidade evoca: a permanente geração de novos conhecimentos. Apesar disso, não lhes pode ser negado o mérito de representarem um ponto de partida para que as organizações compreendam o conhecimento como um de seus recursos produtivos principais.

Este trabalho objetivou identificar as principais tecnologias disponíveis de TI (Tecnologia da Informação) e de AIDC (Identificação e Captura Automática de Dados) para a área de varejo de autosserviço, para preencher a lacuna existente na literatura, sobre os benefícios de se usar novas tecnologias no ponto de venda, com vistas a otimizar sua operação. Para tanto, foram estudados os principais processos operacionais de uma loja de varejo de autosserviço, com vistas a identificar como as Tecnologias da Informação (TI) e de Identificação e Captura Automática de Dados (AIDC), poderiam ajudar a melhorar os resultados operacionais e agregar valor ao negócio. Para analisar suas proposições (de que o uso de TI e de AIDC podem ajudar na: redução dos tempos dos processos de retaguarda; redução do número de operações no ponto de venda; prevenção de perdas; redução dos custos e dos tempos para a realização dos inventários; redução do número de funcionários nas lojas; redução do tempo de fila no caixa; redução de rupturas e no aumento da eficiência operacional da loja), foram pesquisados diversos estudos de casos mundiais de empresas do segmento de varejo, que implementaram as tecnologias de AIDC e TI, principalmente a de RFID, para saber quais foram os impactos do uso destas tecnologias em suas operações e, em seguida, foi desenvolvido um Estudo de Caso abrangente, por meio do qual se objetivou entender os benefícios empresariais reais do uso destas tecnologias para o varejo de autosserviço. Como resultado final, foi possível identificar as mudanças nos processos operacionais do varejo de autosserviço, bem como os benefícios gerados em termos de custo, produtividade, qualidade, flexibilidade e inovação. O trabalho também evidenciou os pontos críticos de sucesso para a implementação da TI e das AIDC no varejo, que são: a revisão dos processos operacionais; a correta definição do hardware; dos insumos; do software; das interferências do ambiente físico; da disponibilização dos dados/informações dos produtos; das pessoas/funcionários e dos parceiros de negócios/fornecedores. De maneira mais específica, este trabalho buscou contribuir para o enriquecimento do campo de estudos no segmento de varejo e para o uso da tecnologia da informação, no Brasil, já que o assunto sobre o uso e o impacto de novas tecnologias no ponto de vendas, ainda permanece pouco explorado academicamente.
