This lecture course covers the theory of so-called duality-based a posteriori error estimation of DG finite element methods. In particular, we formulate consistent and adjoint consistent DG methods for the numerical approximation of both the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations; in the latter case, the viscous terms are discretized based on employing an interior penalty method. By exploiting a duality argument, adjoint-based a posteriori error indicators will be established. Moreover, application of these computable bounds within automatic adaptive finite element algorithms will be developed. Here, a variety of isotropic and anisotropic adaptive strategies, as well as $hp$-mesh refinement will be investigated.

Family businesses are special in many respects. By examining their financial characteristics one can come to unique conclusions/results. This paper explores the general characteristics of the financial behaviour of family businesses, presents the main findings of the INSIST project’s company case studies concerning financing issues and strategies, and intends to identify the financial characteristics of company succession. The whole existence of family businesses is characterized by a duality of the family and business dimensions and this remains the case in their financial affairs. The financial decisions in family businesses (especially SMEs) are affected by aspects involving a duality of goals rather than exclusively profitability, the simultaneous presence of family and business financial needs, and the preferential handling of family needs at the expense of business needs (although it has to be said that there is evidence of family investments being postponed for the sake of business, too. Family businesses, beyond their actual effectiveness, are guided by individual goals like securing living standards, ensuring workplaces for family members, stability of operation, preservation of the company’s good reputation, and keeping the company’s size at a level that the immediate family can control and manage. The INSIST project’s company case studies revealed some interesting traits of family business finances like the importance of financial support from the founder’s family during the establishment of the company, the use of bootstrapping techniques, the financial characteristics of succession, and the role of family members in financial management.

In this article I analize the novel Los héroes impuros by the Costa Rican authoress Rosibel Morera. The analytical categories used include, from the elimination of absolute historical facts, all the way to the notion of eternal return (Mircea Eliade), processes of idolization, and the various symbols appearing on the text. Examination of these categories shows the characters´ duality because of their universality, and also the worldview and the conception of literature held by Morera.

In the first part of this thesis, we study the action of the automorphism group of a matroid on the homology space of the co-independent complex. This representation turns out to be isomorphic, up to tensoring with the sign representation, with that on the homology space associated with the lattice of flats. In the case of the cographic matroid of the complete graph, this result has application in algebraic geometry: indeed De Cataldo, Heinloth and Migliorini use this outcome to study the Hitchin fibration. In the second part, on the other hand, we use ideas from algebraic geometry to prove a purely combinatorial result. We construct a Leray model for a discrete polymatroid with arbitrary building set and we prove a generalized Goresky-MacPherson formula. The first row of the model is the Chow ring of the polymatroid; we prove Poincaré duality, Hard-Lefschetz theorem and Hodge-Riemann relations for the Chow ring.

A broad sector of literature focuses on the relationship between fluid dynamics and gravitational systems. This thesis presents results that suggest the existence of a new kind of fluid/gravity duality not based on the holographic principle. The goal is to provide tools that allow us to systematically unearth hidden symmetries for reduced models of cosmology. The focus is on the field space of these models, i.e. the superspace. In fact, conformal isometries of the supermetric leave geodesics in the field space unaltered; this leads to symmetries of the models. An innovative aspect is the use of the Eisenhart-Duval’s lift. Using this method, systems constrained by a potential can be treated as free ones. Moreover, charges explicitly dependent on time, i.e. dynamical, can be found. A detailed analysis is carried out on three basic models of homogenous cosmology: i) flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker’s isotropic universe filled with a massless scalar field; ii) Schwarzschild’s black hole mechanics and its extension to vacuum (A)dS gravity; iii) Bianchi’s anisotropic type I universe with a massless scalar field. The results show the presence of a hidden Schrödinger’s symmetry which, being intrinsic to both Navier-Stokes’ and Schrödinger’s equations, indicates a correspondence between cosmology and hydrodynamics. Furthermore, the central extension of this algebra explicitly relates two concepts. The first is the number of particles coming from the fluid picture; while the second is the ratio between the IR and UV cutoffs that weighs how much a theory has of “classical” over “quantum”. This suggests a spacetime that emerges from an underlying world which is described by quantum building blocks. These quanta statistically conspire to appear as gravitational phenomena from a macroscopic point of view.

Quantum clock models are statistical mechanical spin models which may be regarded as a sort of bridge between the one-dimensional quantum Ising model and the one-dimensional quantum XY model. This thesis aims to provide an exhaustive review of these models using both analytical and numerical techniques. We present some important duality transformations which allow us to recast clock models into different forms, involving for example parafermions and lattice gauge theories. Thus, the notion of topological order enters into the game opening new scenarios for possible applications, like topological quantum computing. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the numerical analysis of clock models. We explore their phase diagram under different setups, with and without chirality, starting with a transverse field and then adding a longitudinal field as well. The most important observables we take into account for diagnosing criticality are the energy gap, the magnetisation, the entanglement entropy and the correlation functions.
