A new type of sol-gel-derived titanium oxide/copolymer composite material was developed and used for the construction of glucose biosensor. The composite material merged the best properties of the inorganic species, titanium oxide and the organic copolymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-PVP). The glucose oxidase entrapped in the composite matrix retained its bioactivity. Morphologies of the composite-modified electrode and the enzyme electrode were characterized with a scanning electron microscope. The dependence of the current responses on enzyme-loading and pH was studied. The response time of the biosensor was < 20 s and the linear range was up to 9 mM with a sensitivity of 405 nA/mM. The biosensor was stable for at least I month. In addition, the tetrathiafulvalene-mediated enzyme electrode was constructed for the decrease of detection potential and the effect of three common physiological sources that might interfere was also investigated.

A novel type of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) biosensor was developed for water monitor, based on co-immobilizing of Trichosporon cutaneum and Bacillus subtilis in the sol-gel derived composite material which is composed of silica and the grafting copolymer of poly (vinyl alcohol) and 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-P(4-VP)). Factors that influence the performance of the resulting biosensor were examined. The biodegradable substrate spectrum could be expanded by the co-immobilized microorganisms. The biosensor prepared also exhibited good reproducibility and long-term stability. Good agreement was obtained between the results of the sensor BOD measurement and those obtained from conventional BOD5 method for water samples.

A new type of organically modified sol-gel/chitosan composite material was developed and used for the construction of glucose biosensor. This material provided good biocompatibility and the stabilizing microenvironment around the enzyme. Ferrocene was immobilized on the surface of glassy carbon electrode as a mediator. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The effects of enzyme-loading, buffer pH, applied potential and several interferences on the response of the enzyme electrode were investigated. The simple and low-cost glucose biosensor exhibited high sensitivity and good stability.

Novel composite resins possessing good luminescent properties have been synthesized through a free radical copolymerization of styrene, alpha-methylacrylic acid and the binary or ternary complexes of lanthanide ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+). These polymer-based composite resins not only possess good transparency and mechanical performance but also exhibit an intense narrow band emission of lanthanide complexes under UV excitation. We characterized the molecular structure, physical and mechanical performance, and luminescent properties of the composite resins. Spectra investigations indicate that alpha-methyl-acrylic acid act as both solubilizer and ligand. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the lanthanide complexes show superior emission lines and higher intensities in the resin matrix than in the corresponding pure complex powders, which can be attributed to the restriction of molecular motion of complexes by the polymer chain networks and the exclusion of water molecules from the complex. We also found that the luminescence intensity decreased with increasing content of alpha-methylacrylic acid in the copolymer system. The lifetime of the lanthanide complexes also lengthened when they were incorporated in the polymer matrix. In addition, we found that the relationships between emission intensity and Tb (Eu) content exhibit some extent of concentration quenching.

Polyaniline (PANI) in an emeraldine-base form, synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization, was doped with camphor sulfonic acid (CSA). The conducting complex (PANI-CSA) and a matrix, polyamide-66, polyamide-11, or polyamide-1010, were dissolved in a mixed solvent, and the blend solution was dropped onto glass and dried for the preparation of PANI/polyamide composite films. The conductivity of the films ranged from 10(-7) to 10(0) S/cm when the weight fraction of PANI-CSA in the matrices changed from 0.01 to 0.09, and the percolation threshold was about 2 wt %. The morphology of the composite films before and after etching was studied with scanning electron microscopy, and the thermal properties of the composite films were monitored with differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicated that the morphology of the blend systems was in a globular form. The addition of PANI-CSA to the films resulted in a decrease in the melting temperature of the composite films and also affected the crystallinity of the blend systems.

In this work, we report the findings of a study on scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to investigate the interfacial electron-transfer (ET) reaction between the 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane radical anion (TCNQ(.-)) in 1,2-dichloroethane and ferricyanide in an ice-like matrix (a mixture of insulting ice and conductive liquid) under low temperatures. Experimental results indicate that the formed liquid/ice-like matrix interface is superficially similar in electrochemical characteristics to a liquid/liquid interface at temperatures above -20 degreesC. Furthermore, imaging data show that the surface of the ice-like matrix is microscopically flat and physically stable and can be applied as either a conductive or an insulting substrate for SECM studies. Perchlorate ion was selected as the common ion in both phases, the concentrations of which controlled the interfacial potential difference. The effect of perchlorate concentration in the DCE phase on interfacial reactions has been studied in detail. The apparent heterogeneous rate constants for TCNQ(.-) oxidation by Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in another phase under different temperatures have been calculated by a best-fit analysis, where the experimental approach curves are compared with the theoretically derived relationships. Reaction rate data obey Butler-Volmer formulation before and after the freezing point, which is similar to most other known cases of ET reactions at liquid/liquid interfaces. However, there is a sharp change observed for heterogeneous rate constants around the freezing point of the aqueous phase, which reflects the phase transition. At temperatures below -20 degreesC, surface-confined voltammograms for the reduction of ferricyanide were obtained, and the ice-like matrix became an insulating one, which indicates that the aqueous phase is really a frozen phase.

The conductive alpha (2)-K7P2W17VO62/graphite/organoceramic composite was prepared by dispersing alpha (2)-K7P2W17VO62 and graphite powder in a propyltrimethoxysilane-based sol-gel solution; it was used as the electrode material for an amperometric hydrogen peroxide sensor. The modified electrode had a homogeneous mirror-like surface and showed well defined cyclic voltammograms. Square-wave voltammetry was employed to study the pH-dependent electrochemical behavior of c alpha (2)-K7P2W17VO62 doped in the graphite organoceramic matrix, and the experiment showed that both protons and sodium cations participated in the odor process. A hydrodynamic voltammetric experiment was performed to characterize the electrode as an amperometric sensor for the determination of hydrogen peroxide. The sensor can be renewed easily in a repeatable manner by a mechanical polishing step and has a long operational lifetime. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new class of polyoxomelalate (POM)-modified electrodes is fabricated by the sol-gel technique and demonstrated for nitrite sensing. The electrode material comprises an interconnected dispersion of graphite powder and a uniform dispersion of isopolymolybdic anions (Mo8O26) in a porous methylsilicate matrix. The chemically modified electrodes showed well-defined cyclic voltammograms with three reversible redox couples in acidic aqueous solutions because of the good physicochemical compatibility of Mo8O26 and the carbon ceramic matrix. The Mo8O26-modified electrodes show good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. A conductive carbon ceramic composite electrode (CCE) comprised of cc-type 1:12 phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) and carbon powder in an organically modified silicate matrix was fabricated using a sol-gel method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and Osteryoung square-wave voltammetry. Osteryoung square-wave voltammograms of the modified electrode immersed in different acidic aqueous solutions present the dependence of current and redox potential on pH. The PMo12-doped CCE shows more reversible reaction kinetics, good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling or dopant leaching. Moreover, the modified electrode shows good catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MAIDI-TOF-MS) was used for analysis of poly(arylene phosphonate) cyclic oligomers. A comparison was made by using 1,8,9-dithranol, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and retinoic acid as the matrix. The result showed that the retinoic acid produced the strongest ion signals under the conditions used. Different salts of metals were used as the cationization agents to examine the effect on the cyclic oligomers. It was found that the salts could produce metal-cyclic oligomer cation spectra and lithium was the stronger one than those of silver so, the suitable matrix and cationization agent for the new cyclic oligmer were obtained. They were very effective for the analysis of poly(arylene phosphonate) cyclic oligomer.

An organic-inorganic hybrid solid, (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Dark green crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21, a = 24.164(5), b = 18.281(4), c = 11.877(2) Angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V= 5247(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, lambda (MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0331 for 5353 reflections). Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.69 degrees < theta < 25.04 degrees using the omega -scan technique. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full-matrix least squares on F-2 using SHELXL-93. The structure of this compound consists of discrete (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26 clusters, constructed from beta -octamolybdate subunits ((Mo8O26)(4-)) covalently bonded to two (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2+) coordination complexes via bridging oxo groups that connect two adjacent molybdenum sites. A reagentless amperometric hydrogen peroxide biosensor was developed. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was immobilized in a novel sol-gel organic-inorganic hybrid matrix that is composed of silica sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-PVP). Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) was employed as a mediator and could lower the operating potential to -50 mV (versus Ag/AgCl). The sensor achieved 95% of the steady-state current in 15 s. Linear calibration for hydrogen peroxide was up to 1.3 mM with the detection limit of 2.5 x 10(-7)M. The enzyme electrode retained about 94% of its initial activity after 30 days of storage in a dry state at 4 degreesC.

SnO2 nanoparticles were found to self-pack at the air-hydrosol interface and form a nanoparticulate film. The self-packed films were observed under a Brewster angle microscope, and investigated by recording the time evolution of surface pressure and pi-A isotherms. The results show that SnO2 nanoparticles take 3 h to form a complete film at the air-hydrosol interface. Composite monolayers of SnO2 and arachidic acid were obtained by spreading arachidic acid onto a fresh hydrosol surface. Composite Y-type LB films were transferred from the air-hydrosol interface onto substrates, and characterized by FTIR, UV-vis, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and TEM techniques. The results show that the composite films have good structure, with SnO2 nanoparticles uniformly and compactly distributed in the arachidate matrix. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. The present work investigates the effects of cyclic fatigue loading on the residual properties of an injection-molded composite, carbon-fiber-reinforced poly(phenylene ether ketone) (CF/PEK-C), and damage development in this material under fatigue lending. Test specimens, which had been conditioned to various preselected fatigue damage stages, were measured for their residual properties. The results indicated that cyclic fatigue loading alters the constitutive behavior of the injection-molded composite, especially in the non-linear portion of the stress/strain curve. The residual strength decreases with increase in the number of fatigue cycles as a consequence of the accumulation of fatigue damage, which is dominated by the growth of microcracks. While the residual modulus increases slightly with cyclic fatigue loading, this is probably due to the oriented hardening resulting from creep deformation which is induced during cyclic loading. Flexural fatigue tests were performed on an injection-moulded glass-fiber reinforced blend of polyphenylene ether ketone and polyphenylene sulfide composite using four-point bending at a series of fixed mean stress levels with varying stress amplitude. Attention was given to identifying the effects of mean stress and stress amplitude on the fatigue life and failure mechanisms. It was found that the fatigue life of the studied material decreased sharply with increasing stress amplitude at a constant mean stress level and also decreased at a fixed stress amplitude with increasing mean stress. However, analyses of the fatigue data and failure behaviour reveal that, for the studied material, fatigue failure mechanisms depend on the relative importance of mean stress and stress amplitude. At a mean stress level of 80% ultimate flexural strength, the failure results from accumulation of creep strain, while at mean stress levels of 40%, 50% and 60% ultimate flexural strength, the magnitude of stress amplitude influences the type of failure mechanism. As stress amplitude is reduced, the fatigue failure mechanism changes from matrix yielding dominated to crack growth dominated fracture.
