In this work, a ruthenium hexafluorophosphate complex, [Ru(bpy)(3)](PF6)(2) in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) was employed to build a single layer light electrochemical cell on indium tin oxide polyester flexible substrate. The electroluminescence spectrum features a relatively broad band peaked near 625 run, with CIE (x,y) color coordinates of (0.61,0.39). The driving voltage is only 3 V, and for the maximum electrical current of 10 mA the brightness reaches 1 cd/m(2). Regarding the useful application of the device, its opto-electrical behavior under mechanical strain was studied considering the central curvature. The aims of this in vivo study were to compare the effectiveness and color stability of at-home and in-office bleaching techniques and to evaluate whether the use of light sources can alter bleaching results. According to preestablished criteria, 40 patients were selected and randomly divided into four groups according to bleaching treatment: (1) at-home bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide, (2) in-office bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) without a light source, (3) in-office bleaching with 35% HP with quartz-tungsten-halogen light, and (4) in-office bleaching with 35% HP with a light-emitting diode/laser. Tooth shade was evaluated using the VITA Classical Shade Guide before bleaching as well as after the first and third weeks of bleaching. Tooth shade was evaluated again using the same guide 1 and 6 months after the completion of treatment. The shade guide was arranged to yield scores that were used for statistical comparison. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant differences among the groups for any time point (P > .01). There was no color rebound in any of the groups. The bleaching techniques tested were equally effective. Light sources are unnecessary to bleach teeth. (Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent 2012;32:303-309.)

Aiming to compare the effect of different light sources for dental bleaching on vascular permeability of dental pulps, forty-eight incisors were used. The bleaching agent (35% hydrogen peroxide) was activated by halogen light; LED (Light Emitting Diode) or LED, followed by laser phototherapy (LPT) (lambda = 780 nm; 3 J/cm(2)). After the bleaching procedures, the animals received an intra-arterial dye injection and one hour later were sacrificed. The teeth were diaphanized and photographed. The amount of blue stain content of each dental pulp was quantified using a computer imaging program. The data was statistically compared (p <= 0.05). The results showed a significant higher (p <= 0.01) dye content in the groups bleached with halogen light, compared with the control, LED and LED plus LPT groups. Thus, tooth bleaching activated by LED or LED plus LPT induces lesser resulted in increased vascular permeability than halogen light.

In this work, a LED (light emitting diode) based photometer for solid phase photometry is described. The photometer was designed to permit direct coupling of a light source (LED) and a photodiode to a flow cell with an optical pathlength of 4 mm. The flow cell was filled with adsorbing solid phase material (C-18), which was used to immobilize the chromogenic reagent 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN). Aiming to allow accuracy assessment, samples were also analyzed employing ICP OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry) methodology. Applying the paired t-test at the 95% confidence level, no significant difference was observed. Other useful features were also achieved: linear response ranging from 0.05 to 0.85 mg L-1 Zn, limit of detection of 9 mu g L-1 Zn (3 sigma criterion), standard deviation of 1.4% (n = 10), sampling throughput of 36 determinations per h, and a waste generation and reagent consumption of 1.7 mL and of 0.03 mu g per determination, respectively.

The synthesis and photophysical characterization of a PPV-type copolymer containing a fluorene derivative alternated with thiophene units is presented: poly(9,9'-dioctylfluorene-thiophene) (LAPPS29). Photophysical studies demonstrated that in the solid state only preformed ground state aggregates are responsible for exciton formation. These aggregates are formed with a wide range of size distribution. The emission from isolated segments is quenched either by resonant energy transfer, or by migration processes. Also, the main photovoltaic parameters are discussed in connection with the photophysical behavior.

Clin Microbiol Infect 2012; 18: E380E388 Abstract In this randomized clinical trial, the clinical and mycological efficacy of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) was compared with that of topical antifungal therapy for the treatment of denture stomatitis (DS) and the prevalence of Candida species was identified. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups (n = 20 each); in the nystatin (NYT) group patients received topical treatment with nystatin (100 000 IU) four times daily for 15 days and in the PDT group the denture and palate of patients were sprayed with 500 mg/L of Photogem (R), and after 30 min of incubation, were illuminated by light emitting-diode light at 455 nm (37.5 and 122 J/cm2, respectively) three times a week for 15 days. Mycological cultures taken from dentures and palates and standard photographs of the palates were taken at baseline (day 0), at the end of the treatment (day 15) and at the follow-up time intervals (days 30, 60 and 90). Colonies were quantified (CFU/mL) and identified by biochemical tests. Data were analysed by Fishers exact test, analysis of variance and Tukey tests and ? test (a = 0.05). Both treatments significantly reduced the CFU/mL at the end of the treatments and on day 30 of the follow-up period (p <0.05). The NYT and PDT groups showed clinical success rates of 53% and 45%, respectively. Candida albicans was the most prevalent species identified. PDT was as effective as topical nystatin in the treatment of DS.

Oligomere mit konjugierten pi-Elektronensystemen sind für die Materialwissenschaften von großer Bedeutung. Die vielfältigen und umfangreichen Forschungen auf diesem Gebiet gründen im Potenzial dieser Substanzklassen, das im Bereich der Laserfarbstoffe, Leuchtdioden, Photoleiter, optische Schalter oder auch der molekularen Elektronik angesiedelt ist. Zu diesen gehören auch die in dieser Arbeit synthetisierten und untersuchten Phenylenethinylene. Die Herstellung der Oligomere erfolgt nach der Methode von Sonogashira und Hagihara. Dabei wird ein Halogenaren mit einer Alkinkomponente zur Reaktion gebracht. Als Katalysator dient dabei ein Gemisch aus Bis(triphenylphosphin-palladiumdichlorid), Kupfer-(I)-iodid und Triphenylphosphin. Verwendung fanden bei der Synthese zwei Arten von Schutzgruppen. Es handelt sich dabei einerseits um die Trimethylsilyl- und die Triisopropylsilyl-Funktion, die unabhängig voneinander in ein System eingeführt werden und selektiv wieder entfernt werden können. Die zweite Art sind die Halogene Brom und Iod, die aufgrund ihrer Eigenschaft vielmehr als 'dormant group' bezeichnet werden müssen. Eine Ethinylierung führt zunächst zur Substitution des Iod- und anschließend des Bromatoms. Die so erhaltenen Oligomere werden mit verschiedenen spektroskopischen Methoden untersucht. Besonderes Interesse liegt dabei auf der Bestimmung der effektiven Konjugationslänge (EKL). Damit ist es möglich, die Länge des konjugierten Systems zu bestimmen, das für die betreffenden Eigenschaften des entsprechenden Polymers maßgeblich ist. Das nichtlineare optische Verhalten der Oligomere wird mittels der Third-Harmonic-Generation-Methode (THG) gemessen. Die resultierende Größe, die Suszeptibilität 3. Ordnung, gibt Aufschluß über mögliche industrielle Anwendungen.

In questa tesi viene descritto il funzionamento delle sorgenti di luce LED (Light Emitting Diode) a confinamento quantico, che rappresentano la nuova frontiera dell'illuminazione ad alta efficienza e durata. Nei capitoli introduttivi è descritta brevemente la storia dei LEDs dalla loro invenzione agli sviluppi più recenti. Il funzionamento di tali dispositivi fotonici è spiegato a partire dal concetto di sorgente di luce per elettroluminescenza, con particolare riferimento alle eterostrutture a confinamento quantico bidimensionale (quantum wells). I capitoli centrali riguardano i nitruri dei gruppi III-V, le cui caratteristiche e proprietà hanno permesso di fabbricare LEDs ad alta efficienza e ampio spettro di emissione, soprattutto in relazione al fatto che i LEDs a nitruri dei gruppi III-V emettono luce anche in presenza di alte densità di difetti estesi, nello specifico dislocazioni. I capitoli successivi sono dedicati alla presentazione del lavoro sperimentale svolto, che riguarda la caratterizzazione elettrica, ottica e strutturale di LEDs a confinamento quantico basati su nitruri del gruppo III-V GaN e InGaN, cresciuti nei laboratori di Cambridge dal Center for Gallium Nitride. Lo studio ha come obiettivo finale il confronto dei risultati ottenuti su LEDs con la medesima struttura epitassiale, ma differente densità di dislocazioni, allo scopo di comprendere meglio il ruolo che tali difetti estesi ricoprono nella determinazione dell'effcienza delle sorgenti di luce LED. L’ultimo capitolo riguarda la diffrazione a raggi X dal punto di vista teorico, con particolare attenzione ai metodi di valutazioni dello strain reticolare nei wafer a nitruri, dal quale dipende la densità di dislocazioni.

Bereits 1971 erkannte Reiswig bei einigen Schwämmen in der Kontraktion des Osculums eine Reaktion auf Licht. Nachfolgend konnte für eine Reihe von Schwämmen die Existenz von Lichtreaktionen beobachtet werden (Wapstra & van Soest, 1987). In dieser Arbeit sollten Gene eines Luziferin/Luziferase Systems im marinen Schwamm Suberites domuncula identifiziert werden, die eine Rolle bei der Bio¬lumineszenz spielen. Mit Hilfe der PCR-Technik konnten die in der cDNA-Bank identifizierten Fragmente einer Luziferase und eines Luziferin regenerierenden Enzyms erfolgreich vervollständigt, kloniert und analysiert werden. Datenbank¬analysen der abgeleiteten Aminosäuresequenzen ergeben sowohl für die Luziferase als auch für das Luziferin regenerierende Enzym Ähnlichkeiten zu den entsprechenden Proteinen aus Leuchtkäfern, wie z. B. Photinus pyralis. Ausgehend von der cDNA wurden zunächst beide Enzyme in E. coli rekombinant exprimiert und affinitätschromatographisch aufgereinigt. Für die Luziferase gelang es, spezifische Antikörper herzustellen, die im Anschluss an den im Western Blot durchgeführten Nachweis eine Identifizierung in histologischen Schwamm¬schnitten ermöglichte. Weitere Analysen konnten für Suberites domuncula sowohl im Schwammgewebe, im Proteinextrakt als auch für das rekombinante Protein die Licht-generierende Fähigkeit nachweisen. Das ermittelte in vitro Biolumineszenz-Emissionsspektrum der rekombinanten Luziferase weist eine Lichtemission im gelb-grünen Bereich des Spektrums mit einem Maximum bei 548 nm und einer Schulter bei 590 nm auf. Ausserdem bestätigte die Funktionanalyse des rekombinanten Enzyms die für Luziferasen bekannte ATP- und Temperatur¬abhängigkeit sowie den stimulierenden Effekt von Coenzym A. Die Existenz einer bioaktiven Luziferase in einem der ältesten, rezent vertretenen Metazoa deutet darauf hin, dass sich die Oxygenasefunktion der Luziferasen bereits früher entwickelte, als bisher von Viviani* vermutet. Die bisherigen Daten über die optischen Eigenschaften der Spiculae liefern gemeinsam mit den Ergebnissen dieser Arbeit – einer Licht-emittierenden Luziferase in S. domuncula – die Voraussetzungen für die mögliche Existenz eines Photorezeptionssystems in Schwämmen.

E' stato considerato un High-Dislocation Density Light Emitting Diode (HDD LED)ed è stato analizzato l'andamento di corrente a varie temperature. Dai risultati ottenuti è stato possibile ricavare il coefficiente di Poole-Frenkel, e da esso risalire alla densità di dislocazioni del dispositivo.

Die Dissertation beschreibt die Darstellung und Charakterisierung von neuartigen, amphiphilen Carbazol- und Fluoren-(co)-polymeren, die infolge ihres strukturellen Aufbaus sowohl selbstorganisierende als auch optoelektronische Eigenschaften kombinierten. Zum einen wurden Kammpolymere mit konjugierten, steifen Rückgraten und flexiblen sowie konformativ schaltbaren Polyelektrolytseitenketten dargestellt und auf eine pH-abhängige Selbstorganisation in Lösung und an Oberflächen untersucht. Des Weiteren wurden neutrale, methanollösliche Polyfluorene synthetisiert, die in Kombination mit einem unpolaren Polyindenofluorenderivat zum Aufbau mehrschichtiger PLEDs mittels nasschemischer Verfahren eingesetzt wurden. Zum anderen fand die Synthese von amphiphilen Polyfluorenen statt, die als Emulgatoren zur Stabilisierung von inversen Emulsionen eingesetzt wurden. Dabei konnten mit Hilfe eines bereits für die Darstellung von anorganisch-organischen Kern-Schale-Partikeln etablierten in situ-Verfahrens formanisotrope, kristalline Zinkoxidkerne mit konjugierter Polymerhülle erhalten werden.

This thesis reports on the synthesis and characterisation of trans-(M)AB2C meso-substituted porphyrin amino acid esters (PAr) (M = 2H or Zn) with tunable electron donating and electron withdrawing Ar substituents at B positions (Ar = 4-C6H4OnBu, 4-C6H4OMe, 2,4,6-C6H2Me3, 4-C6H4Me, C6H5, 4-C6H4F, 4-C6H4CF3, C6F5). These porphyrins were used as key building blocks for photosynthetic LHC (LHC = light-harvesting antenna complex) and RC (RC = reaction center) model compounds.rnBased on free-base or zinc(II) porphyrin amino acid esters and porphyrin acids several amide linked free-base bis(porphyrins) PAr1-PAr2 (Ar1 = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3, C6F5 and Ar2 = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3, 4-C6H4F, 4-C6H4CF3, C6F5), mono metallated bis(porphyrin) PAr1-(Zn)PAr2 (Ar1 = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3 and Ar2 =4-C6H4F) and its doubly zincated complexes (Zn)PAr1-(Zn)PAr2 were prepared. In the fluorescence spectra of free-base bis(porphyrins) the porphyrin with the strongest electron donating power of Ar substituents at B positions is the light emitting unity. The emission of mono metallated bis(porphyrin) occurs only from the free-base porphyrin building block. This phenomenon is caused by an efficient energy transfer likely via the Dexter through-bond mechanism.rnLinking of anthraquinone (Q) as electron acceptor (A) to the N-terminus of porphyrin amino acid esters ((M)PAr) and aminoferrocene (Fc) as electron donor (D) to the C-terminus of the porphyrin resulting in Q-(M)PAr-Fc triads (M = 2H or Zn, Ar = 4-C6H4OnBu, 4-C6H4OMe, 2,4,6-C6H2Me3, 4-C6H4Me, C6H5, 4-C6H4F, 4-C6H4CF3, C6F5) with tunable electron density at the porphyrin chromophore. In these triads initial oxidative PET (Q←(M)PAr) and reductive PET ((M)PAr→Fc) (PET = photoinduced electron transfer) are possible. Both processes leads to an emission quenching of (M)PAr. The efficiency of the PET pathways occurring in the Marcus normal region is controlled by the specific porphyrin electron density.rnAmide-linked conjugates PAr-Fc (Ar = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3, C6F5) and Fmoc-Fc-PAr1 (N-Fmoc-Fc = N-Fmoc protected 1,1’-ferrocene amino acid; Ar1 = C6H5, 4-C6H4F, 4-C6H4CF3, C6F5) as well as hinges PAr2-Fc-PAr1 (Ar1 = C6H5, 4-C6H4F and Ar2 = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3) were studied with respect to the reductive PET. The PET driving force (−GET) in dyads increases with the increasing electron withdrawing character of Ar substituents. Additionally, intramolecular energy transfer between porphyrins PAr1 and PAr2 is feasible in the hinges via the Förster mechanism.rn
