Low participation at the employee or worksite level limits the potential public health impact of worksite-based interventions. Ecological models suggest that multiple levels of influence operate to determine participation patterns in worksite health promotion programs. Most investigations into the determinants of low participation study the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and institutional influences on employee participation. Community- and policy-level influences have not received attention, nor has consideration been given to worksite-level participation issues. The purpose of this article is to discuss one macrosocial theoretical perspective—political economy of health—that may guide practitioners and researchers interested in addressing the community- and policy-level determinants of participation in worksite health promotion programs. The authors argue that using theory to investigate the full spectrum of determinants offers a more complete range of intervention and research options for maximizing employee and worksite levels of participation.

Emotions in workplace settings and emotional intelligence are hot topics in management today. Leading business journals such as Fortune and Harvard Business Review have featured articles on emotional intelligence. But there is more to emotions in the workplace than just emotional intelligence. The aim of this article is to acquaint managers with intriguing new research that examines both emotional intelligence and the broader issue of emotion, which has been shown to play a powerful role in workplace settings. We show that this research has a strong potential for practical application in organizations within many broad human-resource functions such as selection, performance management, and training, as well as implications for more narrow domains like customer service. We conclude that the study of emotions in organizational settings has provided new and important insights into the way in which people in organizations behave, and we offer advice for managers to enable them to develop and to maintain a positive emotional climate in their organizations.

This paper examines a process of major organizational restructuring in an Australian hospital within a context of decentralization of health services and relocation of clients, brought about by changes in government policy. The change process differed from the abrupt downsizing often found in the private sector in that the organization initiated significant job losses concomitantly with the development of new facilities around the State, while attempting to deal with employee issues related to downsizing. The paper focuses on the process involved in the downsizing, from the perspective of both the "survivors" and "victims" of the change. It draws on interviews and focus groups with managers, union officials and employees, as well a survey of employees to assess the outcomes and effectiveness of the restructuring process. Using a stakeholder analysis framework, the paper examines the complex issues and perspectives raised by the downsizing process.

In New Zealand, the turn from the welfare state since 1984 to a global market driven economy in the early mid 1990s has affected the way that primary curriculum documents have been developed and implemented. Those documents, together with teachers’ handbooks, have in turn affected the way that teachers teach. In particular, the construction of literacy and what constitutes literacy teaching in these documents have affected teachers’ work and have also constructed and are reconstructing childhood and the child literate. The way that teachers teach literacy depends on their constructions of children and childhood and that as their views of childhood and children change, so too do their views of the teaching of literacy. Against this background of locating childhood and children in educational and literacy discourses, other discourses of new technologies, cultural diversity, time and space of “new times” are also challenging the construction of literacy, the literate child and childhood.

Purpose. Health promotion policy frameworks, recent theorizing, and research all emphasize understanding and mobilizing environmental influences to change particular health-related behaviors in specific settings. The workplace is a key environmental setting. The Checklist of Health Promotion Environments at Worksites (CHEW) was designed as a direct observation instrument to assess characteristics of worksite environments that are known to influence health-related behaviors. Methods. The CHEW is a 112-item checklist of workplace environment features hypothesized to be associated, both positively and negatively, with physical activity, healthy eating, alcohol consumption, and smoking. The three environmental domains assessed are (1) physical characteristics of the worksite, (2) features of the information environment, and (3) characteristics of the immediate neighborhood around the workplace. The conceptual rationale and development studies for the CHEW are described, and data from observational studies of 20 worksites are reported. Results. The data on CHEW-derived environmental attributes showed generally good reliability and identified meaningful sets of variables that plausibly may influence health-related behaviors. With the exception of one information environment attribute, intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.80 to 1.00. Descriptive statistics on selected physical and information environment characteristics indicated that vending machines, showers, bulletin boards, and signs prohibiting smoking were common across worksites. Bicycle racks, visible stairways, and signs related to alcohol consumption, nutrition, and health. promotion were relatively uncommon. Conclusions. These findings illustrate the types of data on environmental attributes that can be derived, their relevance for program planning, and how they can characterize variability across worksites. The CHEW is a promising observational measure that has the potential to assess environmental influences on health behaviors and to evaluate workplace health promotion programs.

The taxi industry provides a strategic site to explore workplace deviance in low supervision, low status, occupational settings. Despite this theoretical opportunity and the objective importance of the taxi industry worldwide, very little is known about deviance among taxi drivers. Making use of interview data, this exploratory study maps out forms of workplace deviance and the explanations given for them by a sample of male taxi drivers. Major illegal activities reported included speeding, driving unsafe vehicles, taking drugs, and fraud. Theories pertaining to worker alienation, stress management, victim precipitation, and social control were relevant to the rationalizations some of the drivers provided to account for their illegal behaviors. We conclude that the occupational culture of taxi drivers and the structure of the taxi industry facilitate the forms of deviance reported here.

In this paper, we present the results of a qualitative study of subordinate perceptions of leaders. The study represents a preliminary test of a model based on Affective Events Theory, which posits that leaders who are seen to be effective shape the affective events that determine employees' attitudes and behaviours in the workplace. Within this framework, we argue that effective leaders ameliorate employees' hassles by providing frequent, small emotional uplifts. The resulting positive affective states are then proposed to lead to more positive employee attitudes and behaviours, and more positive regard for the leader. Importantly, leaders who demonstrate these ameliorating behaviours are likely to require high levels of emotional intelligence, defined in terms of the ability to recognise, understand, and manage emotions in self and others. To investigate this model, we conducted interviews and focus groups with 10 leaders and 24 employees. Results confirmed that these processes do indeed exist in the workplace. In particular, leaders who were seen by employees to provide continuous small emotional uplifts were consistently held to be the most effective. Study participants were especially affected by negative events (or hassles). Leaders who failed to deal with hassles or, worse still, were the source of hassles, were consistently seen to be less effective. We conclude with a discussion of implications for practicing managers, and suggest that our exploratory findings provide justification for emotional intelligence training as a means to improve leader perceptions and effectiveness. A utilização da margem de consignação é um fator indicativo de endividamento do servidor público, pois compromete parte de sua renda futura, diminuindo seu poder aquisitivo. A partir do ano de 2003 o governo brasileiro estimulou a oferta de crédito consignado, com taxas de juros mais atrativas, acarretando e um aumento do saldo de operações contratadas de 1.340,20% de 2004 a 2011. Devido as características do vínculo empregatício os servidores públicos se tornaram os principais tomadores de empréstimo consignado. Entretanto, o não entendimento da margem de consignação e a falta de educação financeira pode fazer com que o servidor entre em situação de dificuldade financeira, principalmente como sobreendividamento, que é a impossibilidade de pagar suas dívidas de créditos, podendo ter reflexo no desenvolvimento do trabalho. A fim de atingir o objetivo de identificar a atuação da instituição sobre as implicações do uso da margem de consignação pelos servidores públicos, foi realizado uma pesquisa de levantamento com abordagem quanti-qualitativa por meio de aplicação de questionário, obtendo um retorno de 210 respostas válidas. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados utilizando técnicas estatísticas como análise descritiva e tabelas de contingência observando os valores dos testes de qui-quadrado e V de Cramer. As conclusões indicam que a orientação financeira do servidor pode contribuir para utilização da margem de consignação de forma mais consciente evitando problemas financeiros e melhorando sua atuação no trabalho e que a instituição estudada poderia atuar de forma mais ativa sobre as implicações da margem de consignação. Por fim, foi recomendado como plano de intervenção da instituição a formulação de cursos sobre a educação financeira e sobre a margem de consignação, apresentado conceitos e casos cotidianos para melhor assimilação dos servidores, por meio do programa de capacitação dos servidores já existente na instituição

Esta tese apresenta os resultados da pesquisa que teve como objetivo analisar como os trabalhadores vivenciam os efeitos subjetivos produzidos pelo processo de trabalho de um Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Álcool e Drogas (CAPSad). A pesquisa foi realizada sob uma abordagem qualitativa, em um CAPSad do município de Vila Velha, Espírito Santo. A coleta de dados se deu por meio de cinco etapas: 1. Análise documental das políticas vigentes sobre uso de drogas; 2. Análise de prontuários; 3. Entrevista coletiva com dez trabalhadores; 4. Oitenta horas de observação do cotidiano de trabalho; 5. Entrevista em profundidade com treze trabalhadores. Para análise de dados foi utilizada a técnica da Análise Temática. Constatamos que no plano das políticas sobre o assunto,há prevalência de ideias relacionadas à repressão dos usuários, apesar da tentativa do Ministério da Saúde (MS) em abordar a redução de danos como uma estratégia que valoriza o sujeito e sua singularidade. A análise ainda apontou as dificuldades que os profissionais enfrentam neste município para atuar segundo as diretrizes do MS, uma vez que as ações municipais dão ênfase à repressão, à religiosidade e ao amedrontamento como estratégia de prevenção, com apoio da justiça e da polícia. Enfatizamos que tais ambiguidades repercutem no trabalho e para o trabalhador. Apontamos ainda outros aspectos que geram efeitos para os trabalhadores: condições de trabalho precárias (devido à estrutura do serviço, baixos salários e rede de atenção inexistente), falta de reconhecimento (devido à omissão da gerência e à ausência de normas) e sobrecarga (devido à falta de profissionais e aos conflitos nas divisões de tarefas). Essas situações levam a efeitos subjetivos como: desgaste, adoecimento, medo, incapacidade de agir, apatia, desvalorização, desmotivação e no aprisionamento do trabalhador. Notamos que estes efeitos são todos negativos e que os profissionais os vivenciam por meio do distanciamento afetivo no processo de trabalho, o que repercute negativamente na possibilidade de produção de um cuidado efetivo. Sugerimos que haja investimentos na formação de todos os trabalhadores que atuam nesse local, com foco na educação permanente, uma vez que por meio desta há o incentivo da aprendizagem e o enfrentamento criativo dos efeitos vivenciados no cotidiano.É preciso que haja diálogo, seja entre os trabalhadores e a gestão, entre os próprios trabalhadores e entre trabalhadores e usuários.

The objective of this paper is to provide empirical evidence on the determinants of gender wage inequality in the Portuguese tourism industry. Relying on firm level wage equations and production functions, gender wage and productivity differentials are estimated and then compared in order to infer whether observed gender disparities are justifiable on the grounds that women are relatively less productive than men, or instead disparities are due to gender wage discrimination. This approach is applied to tourism industry data gathered in the matched employer-employee data set Quadros de Pessoal (Employee Records). The main findings indicate that female employees in the tourism industry in Portugal are less productive than their male colleagues and that gender differences in wages are fully explained by gender differences in productivity.

Tourism represents a major economic activity in Portugal, with an enormous wealth and employment growth potential. A significant proportion of jobs in the industry tourism are occupied by women, given that this industry is characterized by a relatively higher percentage of female employees. Despite the evidence of female progress with regard to their role in the Portuguese labor market, women continue to earn less than their male counterparts. This is clearly the case of the tourism industry, where statistics reveal a persistent gender wage gap. The objective of this paper is to provide empirical evidence on the determinants of gender wage inequality in the tourism industry in northern Portugal. Relying on firm-level wage equations and production functions, gender wage and productivity differentials are estimated and then compared. The comparison of these differentials allows inferring whether observed wage disparities are attributable to relatively lower female productivity, or instead disparities are due to gender wage discrimination. The purpose of this study was to characterize the situation of Portuguese Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) concerning the certification of their Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS), in their individually form, to identify benefits, drawbacks and difficulties associated with the certification process and to characterize the level of integration that has been achieved. This research was based on a survey carried out by the research team; it was administered to 46 Portuguese SMEs. Our sample comprised 20 firms (43%) from the Trade/Services activity sector, 17 (37%) from the Industrial sector, 5 (11%) from the Electricity/Telecommunications sector and 4 (9%) from the Construction area. All SMEs surveyed were certified according to the ISO 9001 (100%), a quarter of firms were certified according to the ISO 14001 (26.1%) and a few certified by OHSAS 18001 (15.2%). We undertook a multivariate cluster analysis, which enabled grouping variables into homogeneous groups or one or more common characteristics of the SMEs participating in the study. Results show that the main benefits that Portuguese SMEs have gained from the referred certifications have been, among others, an improvement of both their internal organization and external image. We also present the main difficulties in achieving certification. Overall, 7 of the Portuguese SMEs examined indicated that the main benefits of the IMS implementation management included costs reduction, increased employee training and easier compliance of legislation. The respective drawbacks and difficulties are also presented. Finally, we presented the main integrated items in the certified Portuguese SMEs we examined.
