Boron-containing complexes that have the potential to irreversibly accumulate in melanoma cells have been prepared by reaction of amino acids with 9-methoxy-9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane. The ability of each complex to act as a substrate for tyrosinase has been probed by oximetry. Increased uptake of the lead candidate in a tyrosinase-rich cell line, compared with a tyrosinase-absent cell line, is reported, with results correlating well with that for a drug currently approved for BNCT.

Electrochromic and electrofluorochromic properties of a new boron dipyrromethene–ferrocene conjugate
Resumo:
A new boron dipyrromethene–ferrocene (BODIPY–Fc) conjugate with pentafluorophenyl as the meso substituent and two Fc termini was synthesized and its spectroscopic and electrochemical features were analyzed. An intramolecular charge transfer from the donor Fc to the acceptor BODIPY has been predicted by theory and confirmed experimentally, leading to efficient fluorescence quenching when the dyad is in the neutral state. Fluorescence can be triggered by oxidizing both ferrocenyl units either chemically or electrochemically. Eventually, a fully reversible fluorescence switch is evidenced by coupling TIRF microscopy with electrolysis in an electrochemical cell.

Silicon nitride has demonstrated to be a potential candidate for clinical applications because it is a non-cytotoxic material and has satisfactory fracture toughness, high wear resistance and low friction coefficient. In this paper, samples of silicon nitride, which were kept into rabbits` tibias for 8 weeks, and the adjacentbone tissue were analysed by scanning electron microscopy in order to verify the bone growth around the implants and the interaction between the implant and the bone. Bone growth occurred mainly in the cortical areas, although it has been observed that the newly bone tends to grow toward the marrow cavity. Differences were observed between the implants installed into distal and proximal regions. In the first region, where the distance between the implant and the cortical bone is greater than in the proximal region, the osteoconduction process was evidenced by the presence of a bridge bone formation toward the implant surface. The results showed that silicon nitride can be used as biomaterial since the newly bone grew around the implants. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The chemical and dimensional stability associated with suitable fracture toughness and propitious tribological characteristics make silicon nitride-based ceramics potential candidates for biomedical applications, mainly as orthopedic implants. Considering this combination of properties, silicon nitride components were investigated in relation to their biocompatibility. For this study, two cylindrical implants were installed in each tibia of five rabbits and were kept in the animals for 8 weeks. During the healing time, tissue tracers were administrated in the animals so as to evaluate the bone growth around the implants. Eight weeks after the surgery, the animals were euthanized and histological analyses were performed. No adverse reactions were observed close to the implant. The osteogenesis process occurred during the entire period defined by the tracers. However, this process occurred more intensely 4 weeks after the surgery. In addition, the histological analyses showed that bone growth occurred preferentially in the cortical areas. Different kinds of tissue were identified on the implant surface, characterized by lamellar bone tissue containing osteocytes and osteons, by a noncalcified matrix containing osteoblasts, or by the presence of collagen III, which may change to collagen I or remain as a fibrous tissue. The results demonstrated that silicon nitride obtained according to the procedure proposed in this research is a biocompatible material. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Thin silicon nitride films were prepared at 350 degrees C by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition on Si(100) substrates under different NH(3)/SiH(4) or N(2)/SiH(4) gas mixture. The chemical composition and bonding structure of the deposited films were investigated as a function of the process parameters, such as the gas flow ratio NH(3)/SiH(4) or N(2)/SiH(4) and the RF power, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The gas flow ratio was 1.4, 4.3, 7.2 or 9.5 and the RF power, 50 or 100 W. Decomposition results of Si 2p XPS spectra indicated the presence of bulk Si, under-stoichiometric nitride, stoichiometric nitride Si(3)N(4), oxynitride SiN(x)O(y), and stoichiometric oxide SiO(2), and the amounts of these compounds were strongly influenced by the two process parameters. These results were consistent with those obtained from N 1s XPS spectra. The chemical composition ratio N/Si in the film increased with increasing the gas flow ratio until the gas flow ratio reached 4.3, reflecting the high reactivity of nitrogen, and stayed almost constant for further increase in gas flow ratio, the excess nitrogen being rejected from the growing film. A considerable and unexpected incorporation of contaminant oxygen and carbon into the depositing film was observed and attributed to their high chemical reactivity. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Thin zirconium nitride films were prepared on Si(l 00) substrates at room temperature by ion beam assisted deposition with a 2 keV nitrogen ion beam. Arrival rate ratios ARR(N/Zr) used were 0.19, 0.39, 0.92, and 1.86. The chemical composition and bonding structure of the films were analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Deconvolution results for Zr 3d, Zr 3p(3/2), N 1s, O 1s, and C 1s XPS spectra indicated self-consistently the presence of metal Zr-0, nitride ZrN, oxide ZrO2, oxymnide Zr2N2O, and carbide ZrC phases, and the amounts of these compounds were influenced by ARR(N/Zr). The chemical composition ratio N/Zr in the film increased with increasing ARR(N/Zr) until ARR(N/Zr) reached 0.92, reflecting the high reactivity of nitrogen in the ion beam, and stayed almost constant for ARR(N/Zr) >= 1, the excess nitrogen being rejected from the growing film. A considerable incorporation of contaminant oxygen and carbon into the depositing film was attributed to the getter effect of zirconium. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

(i) The electronic and structural properties of boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by ab initio total energy calculations. In (i) we find that the structural deformations are very localized around the boron substitutional sites, and in accordance with previous studies (Endo et al 2001 J. Appl. Phys. 90 5670) there is an increase of the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. Our simulated scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images, for occupied states, indicate the formation of bright (triangular) spots lying on the substitutional boron (center) and nearest-neighbor carbon (edge) sites. Those STM images are attributed to the increase of the density of states within an energy interval of 0.5 eV below the Fermi level. For a boron concentration of similar to 2.4%, we find that two boron atoms lying on the opposite sites of the same hexagonal ring (B1-B2 configuration) represents the energetically most stable configuration, which is in contrast with previous theoretical findings. Having determined the energetically most stable configuration for substitutional boron atoms on graphene sheets, we next considered the hydrogen adsorption process as a function of the boron concentration, (ii). Our calculated binding energies indicate that the C-H bonds are strengthened near boron substitutional sites. Indeed, the binding energy of hydrogen adatoms forming a dimer-like structure on the boron doped B1-B2 graphene sheet is higher than the binding energy of an isolated H(2) molecule. Since the formation of the H dimer-like structure may represent the initial stage of the hydrogen clustering process on graphene sheets, we can infer that the formation of H clusters is quite likely not only on clean graphene sheets, which is in consonance with previous studies (Hornekaer et al 2006 Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 186102), but also on B1-B2 boron doped graphene sheets. However, for a low concentration of boron atoms, the formation of H dimer structures is not expected to occur near a single substitutional boron site. That is, the formation (or not) of H clusters on graphene sheets can be tuned by the concentration of substitutional boron atoms.

Chemically functionalized adamantane molecules have been investigated by first principles total energy calculations. Boron and nitrogen functionalized molecules were found to be very stable, consistent with available experimental data. Two hypothetical molecular crystals, involving functionalized adamantane, were investigated. These molecular crystals presented direct electronic bandgaps and large bulk moduli, which suggested a possible road for molecular self-assembly using functionalized diamondoids. We investigate the transport properties (IxV curves and zero bias transmittance) of pristine graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) as well as doped with boron and nitrogen using an approach that combines nonequilibrium Green`s functions and density functional theory (DFT) [NEGF-DFT]. Even for a pristine nanoribbon we verify a spin-filter effect under finite bias voltage when the leads have an antiparallel magnetization. The presence of the impurities at the edges of monohydrogenated zigzag GNRs changes dramatically the charge transport properties inducing a spin-polarized conductance. The IxV curves for these systems show that depending on the bias voltage the spin polarization can be inverted. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 111: 1379-1386, 2011

We present theoretical photoluminescence (PL) spectra of undoped and p-doped Al(x)In(1-xy)Ga(y)N/Al(X)In(1) (X) (Y)Ga(Y)N double quantum wells (DQWs). The calculations were performed within the k.p method by means of solving a full eight-band Kane Hamiltonian together with the Poisson equation in a plane wave representation, including exchange-correlation effects within the local density approximation. Strain effects due to the lattice mismatch are also taken into account. We show the calculated PL spectra, analyzing the blue and red-shifts in energy as one varies the spike and the well widths, as well as the acceptor doping concentration. We found a transition between a regime of isolated quantum wells and that of interacting DQWs. Since there are few studies of optical properties of quantum wells based on nitride quaternary alloys, the results reported here will provide guidelines for the interpretation of forthcoming experiments. Several experiments were performed to investigate both (p, alpha) and (n, alpha) reactions induced on boron isotopes, by means of Quasi-Free (QF) reactions induced on deuteron target. The experimental study of the astrophysically relevant, (11)B(p, alpha(0))(8)Be reaction was performed by selecting the QF-contribution on the (2)H((11)B, alpha(8)(0)Be)n reaction. Moreover, due to the large interest of a better understanding of (n, alpha) reactions both for nuclear and astrophysical developments, a preliminary study of the (10)B(n, alpha)(7)Li through the QF (2)H((10)B, alpha(7)Li)p reaction was also performed. The results concerning the two experiments will be shown and discussed.

Important concentrations of tourmaline occur as gold-bearing stratiform tourmalinites and in mineralized quartz-tourmaline veins at the Tapera Grande and Quartzito gold prospects in the Mesoproterozoic Serra do Itaberaba Group, central Ribeira Belt (Sao Paulo State, SE Brazil). The main rock types in both prospects constitute the volcanic-sedimentary Morro da Pedra Preta Formation, which formed in a submarine back-arc setting. At Tapera Grande, the volcanic-sedimentary sequence is composed of metabasic and metavolcaniclastic rocks, graphitic and sulfur-rich metapelites, banded iron formation, metandesite, metarhyolite, calcsilicates, tourmalinites and metahydrothermalites derived from mafic and felsic rocks. The Mesoproterozoic rocks at Quartzito prospect are lithologically similar but they have been affected by Neoproterozoic faulting and shearing and by the emplacement of granitic rocks, resulting in the formation of tourmaline-rich quartz-carbonate veins with gold and base metal mineralization. We conducted a chemical and B-isotope study of tourmalines in order to better understand the origin of the stratiform tourmalinites in the Morro da Pedra Preta Formation and their relationship with gold mineralization. The overall range of delta(11)B values obtained for the tourmalinite and vein tourmalines is between - 15%. and -5 parts per thousand, with the tourmalinites failing at the low end of this range (-15 to -8 parts per thousand). Such values are typical for continental crust and inconsistent with a primary marine boron signature as expected from the submarine-exhalative model for the gold prospects. We conclude from this that tourmaline formed or recrystallized from crustal fluids related to the amphibolite-grade metamorphism which affected the Serra do Itaberaba Group and that gold deposition occurred syn- to post-peak metamorphism by phase immiscibility, as attested by fluid inclusions in Tapera Grande tourmalinite tourmaline and quartz. The vein-hosted tourmalines at Quartzito have isotopically variable boron signatures, with heavier delta(11)B values of -5 parts per thousand to -8 parts per thousand for acicular green tourmalines and lighter values (-15 parts per thousand to -7 parts per thousand for light blue, Ti-firee tourmaline from quartz-carbonate veins). We attribute the heavier boron to fluids derived from the volcano-sedimentary rocks of marine affinity whereas the lighter boron was contributed by crustal fluids related to the granitoids or metasediments in the continental crust. The first application of lipases as catalysts to obtain optically active boron-containing amines and amides is described. We studied several reaction conditions to achieve the kinetic resolution of boron-containing amines via enantioselective acylation mediated by Candida antarctica lipase B (CAL-B). Excellent enantioselectivity (E>200) and high enantiomeric excess (up to >99%) of both the remaining amines and amides were obtained. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
