To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

The relationship between the operator norms of fractional integral operators acting on weighted Lebesgue spaces and the constant of the weights is investigated. Sharp bounds are obtained for both the fractional integral operators and the associated fractional maximal functions. As an application improved Sobolev inequalities are obtained. Some of the techniques used include a sharp off-diagonal version of the extrapolation theorem of Rubio de Francia and characterizations of two-weight norm inequalities.

Characterize ethylbenzene and xylene air concentrations, and explore the biological exposure markers (urinary t,t-muconic acid (t,t-MA) and unmetabolized toluene) among petroleum workers offshore. Offshore workers have increased health risks due to simultaneous exposures to several hydrocarbons present in crude oil. We discuss the pooled benzene exposure results from our previous and current studies and possible co-exposure interactions. BTEX air concentrations were measured during three consecutive 12-h work shifts among 10 tank workers, 15 process operators, and 18 controls. Biological samples were collected pre-shift on the first day of study and post-shift on the third day of the study. The geometric mean exposure over the three work shifts were 0.02 ppm benzene, 0.05 ppm toluene, 0.03 ppm ethylbenzene, and 0.06 ppm xylene. Benzene in air was significantly correlated with unmetabolized benzene in blood (r = 0.69, p < 0.001) and urine (r = 0.64, p < 0.001), but not with urinary t,t-MA (r = 0.27, p = 0.20). Toluene in air was highly correlated with the internal dose of toluene in both blood (r = 0.70, p < 0.001) and urine (r = 0.73, p < 0.001). Co-exposures were present; however, an interaction of metabolism was not likely at these low benzene and toluene exposures. Urinary benzene, but not t,t-MA, was a reliable biomarker for benzene at low exposure levels. Urinary toluene was a useful biomarker for toluene exposure. Xylene and ethylbenzene air levels were low. Dermal exposure assessment needs to be performed in future studies among these workers.

Gender inequalities exist in work life, but little is known about their presence in relation to factors examined in occupation health settings. The aim of this study was to identify and summarize the working and employment conditions described as determinants of gender inequalities in occupational health in studies related to occupational health published between 1999 and 2010. A systematic literature review was undertaken of studies available in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Sociological Abstracts, LILACS, EconLit and CINAHL between 1999 and 2010. Epidemiologic studies were selected by applying a set of inclusion criteria to the title, abstract, and complete text. The quality of the studies was also assessed. Selected studies were qualitatively analysed, resulting in a compilation of all differences between women and men in the prevalence of exposure to working and employment conditions and work-related health problems as outcomes. Most of the 30 studies included were conducted in Europe (n=19) and had a cross-sectional design (n=24). The most common topic analysed was related to the exposure to work-related psychosocial hazards (n=8). Employed women had more job insecurity, lower control, worse contractual working conditions and poorer self-perceived physical and mental health than men did. Conversely, employed men had a higher degree of physically demanding work, lower support, higher levels of effort-reward imbalance, higher job status, were more exposed to noise and worked longer hours than women did. This systematic review has identified a set of working and employment conditions as determinants of gender inequalities in occupational health from the occupational health literature. These results may be useful to policy makers seeking to reduce gender inequalities in occupational health, and to researchers wishing to analyse these determinants in greater depth.

Severin Falkman (1831-1889) oli ruotsalaissyntyinen taiteilija, jonka käsialaa ovat muun muassa Helsingin yliopiston kirjaston kupolisalin eri tieteenaloja symboloivat lynettipintojen maalaukset. Falkmanin Itä-Suomen matkalla syntynyt kuvateos on itäsuomalaisen maiseman, kansan ja kansatieteellisten esineiden kuvausta kareliaanisessa hengessä.

Työssä kartoitettiin mahdollisuudet nollavisiokeskuksen toteuttamiseksi Paimion ajoharjoitteluradan yhteyteen yhteistyössä Varsinais-Suomen Ajoharjoittelurata Oy:n, ELY-keskuksen ja Liikenneturvan kanssa. Työn lopputuloksena syntyi tarveselvitys ajoharjoitteluradan liikenneturvallisuusnäyttelyn uudistamisesta nollavision hengessä sekä nollavisioreitin toteuttamisesta. Suunnittelun taustalla olivat EU:n liikenneturvallisuustavoitteet: ylinopeuksien vähentäminen, turvalaitteiden käytön lisääminen ja liikenneraittius. Suunnittelu pohjautui Norjan Lillehammerin vastaavanlaisen nollavisiokeskuksen sisältöön ja Lillehammerin nollavisioreittiin sekä kokemuksiin niiden toteuttamisesta. Työssä esitettiin ideoita Paimion ajoharjoitteluradan liikenneturvallisuuskeskuksessa olevan näyttelyn uudistamiseksi. Ideoita näyttelyyn haettiin Lillehammerin nollavisiokeskuksesta. Nollavisiokeskuksella haettiin Suomen liikenneturvallisuusvision ja -tavoitteiden konkretisoitumista. Tavoitteena on opettaa liikennekäyttäytymistä omien kokemusten kautta sekä muokata etenkin koululaisten ja nuorten asenteita liikenteessä. Työssä suunniteltiin kaksi nollavisioreittiä Paimion ajoharjoitteluradan yhteyteen. Toinen reitti kulkee Paimiosta Turkuun ja toinen Salosta Paimioon. Ajo-opetuksen ajoharjoittelukerralla on tarkoitus tutustua liikenneturvallisuutta parantaviin toimenpiteisiin tieympäristössä ajamalla nollavisiolenkki ajo-oppilaiden kanssa läpi ja keskustelemalla mikä on toimenpiteen tavoite. Reitit on suunniteltu siten, että ne on mahdollista ajaa kahden autokoulun ajotunnin aikana. Nollavisioreittien punainen lanka on onnettomuuksien estäminen ja niiden seurauksien lieventäminen. Näin ollen reittien varrella sijaitsevat kohteet on jaettu teemoihin onnettomuustyyppien mukaan.
