The potential benefits of using videos in higher education

The developments of digital technology have opened new outlooks for online education which offer students the flexibility to learn at any time and any place. With all this instructional changes instructors, in all levels of the educational chain have been compelled to adapt quickly to this reality. They have a wide diversity of tools available to grab student’s attention and motivate them to embrace the knowledge in their own learning process. One of these resources is the use of videos. Through them lecturers can deliver complex information and contents to students and, if used creatively, videos can become a powerful technological tool in education. In this article we will explore some of the potential benefits and challenges associated with the use of videos in the teaching and learning process at higher education levels. We will also discuss some thoughts and examples for the use of teaching materials to enhance student’s learning and try to change ideas about the potentialities and future of video’s annotation new software resources, as incoming open tools for group work involvement.

Henri Tintant face au problème "Science et Foi"

From an early age Henri Tintant was conforted with the problematic relationships between Science and Faith. After a traditional religious education, he took responsabilities within groups of teenagers and adults through scouting and the J. E. C. (an organisation of catholic students). In 1940 he was at Montpellier distributing unauthorised leaflets defending religious faith. But more significant is his intellectual contribution. He was an active and inspiring member of several workshops and in one in particumar initiated by the Catholic University of Lyon entitled : "From Naturalist to Theologians" where he would start a very fruitful and compelling intellectual collaboration with Father Gustave Martelet a jesuit theologian and a strong supporter of a permanent dialog with the scientists. Throughout the years they will gradually come to the conclusion of a necessary synergy between the scientific and the theologic approach when dealing with the mystery of religious faith . Even in the last months of his life, Henri Tintant was writing to his friendon the subject, with the same profound religious faith that brought him the serenity and the open mindness he has showed throughout his teaching and scientific career. His legacy will remain in two of his last thoughts: "Almost 50 years of scientific research have brought me a lot of pleausures and satisfactions but no answer to the essential questions. In my personal case, science and researching have not driven me away from my religious faith, on the contrary the helped me in my awareness of its utmost necessity". "Faithful to my religious belief, I am convinced that with the death, the inevitable human destiny, not everything disapears completely but another form of live, unimaginable for our limited minds, emerges, bearing in itself the perfect realization of all our hopes and desires".

Sustentabilidade dos Georrecursos: Proposta de Definição de Índice de Sustentabilidade para Pedreiras Produtoras de Agregados

As atuais políticas industriais procuram conjugar os objetivos económicos com direitos sociais e ambientais através da aplicação de políticas de desenvolvimento sustentável. A gestão coordenada destes três capítulos visa contribuir para o bem‐estar e progressiva melhoria da qualidade de vida dos cidadãos. Esta Tese de Mestrado tem por objetivo a aplicação de um sistema de avaliação de pedreiras produtoras de agregados partindo da análise integrada de indicadores setoriais nas áreas económica, social e ambiental. Deste modo é proposto o desenvolvimento de um método de avaliação que permita proceder a uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa do desempenho de pedreiras do ponto de vista da sua sustentabilidade. Numa abordagem inicial, enquadradora das questões que se levantam com as políticas de desenvolvimento sustentável, é feita uma introdução relativa às correntes de pensamento dominantes sobre esta questão, tendo ainda sido feito um relacionamento entre as questões ligadas com o planeamento estratégico deste setor industrial e as questões ligadas com o ordenamento do território. Posteriormente, é feita uma análise do enquadramento do setor extrativo relativo à exploração de pedreiras no âmbito das políticas económicas, sociais e ambientais da Comunidade Europeia e uma caracterização da importância deste setor industrial na economia portuguesa. Após o desenvolvimento destas questões, é dada sequência ao trabalho desenvolvido na adoção e criação de indicadores económicos, sociais e ambientais adaptados à situação particular das pedreiras produtoras de inertes portuguesas. Finalmente, é proposto o desenvolvimento de um método de cálculo tendo em vista a criação de um Índice de Sustentabilidade a partir da análise dos resultados dos indicadores setoriais anteriormente referidos. Assim, é apresentada uma súmula de conclusões sobre este tipo de abordagem, suas vantagens e inconvenientes relativamente aos métodos tradicionais de avaliação deste tipo de indústria. É, por último, apresentado um conjunto de sugestões que permitam a utilização na rotina, de forma acessível, desta nova ferramenta de análise.

The Self-Inflicted Burns - Typology and its Prognostic Relevance in a 14-Year Review of Self-Inflicted Burns in a Tertiary Referral Centre

Self-inflicted burns (SIB) are responsible for 2-6% of admissions to Burn Units in Europe and North America, and for as many as 25% of admissions in developing nations. Recently, a promising new tool was proposed to stratify SIB patients in the following subgroups: "typical", "delirious", and "reactive". However, as far as the authors know, the clinical usefulness of this instrument has not yet been validated by others. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 56 patients admitted to our Burn Unit with the diagnosis of SIB injury in the past 14 years. The following parameters were evaluated: demographic features; psychiatric illness; substance abuse; mechanism of injury; burn depth, total body surface area (TBSA) involved, Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI); length of hospital stay, and mortality. All patients were followed up by a psychologist and a psychiatrist, and were classified according to the SIB-Typology Tool, into three classes: "typical", "delirious" and "reactive". There was a slight predominance of the "typical" type (44.6%), followed by the "delirious" type (30.4%), and, finally the "reactive" type (25.0%). Mortality was significantly higher in the "typical" subgroup. In conclusion, the SIB-Typology Tool appears to be a valuable instrument in the clinical management of SIB patients.

Designing video lectures for MOOC

Educational videos differ from other teaching and learning technologies as they allow the benefit of using visual perception. Video lectures are not new to education, however with the use of innovative video technologies they can improve academic outcomes and extend the reach of education. They may offer extraordinary new experiences for higher education institutions (HEI). Through them lecturers can provide information and contents to students, and if used creatively, video lectures can become a powerful technological tool in education, inside and outside classrooms. Inside a classroom it can motivate students and improve topics’ debate and outside it is a good support for students’ self- learning. In some cases they can be used to work some subjects standing behind, but needed to support actual courses contents, that students do not remember (or were not even taught), opening an “in front to the past door” that backs students self-study. The student-educator dynamic is changing. Students are expecting exceptional instruction and educators are expecting students to be more and more well informed about subjects from online viewing.This article explores some of the potential benefits and challenges associated with the use of video lectures in the teaching and learning process at higher education. We will also discuss some thoughts and examples for the use of teaching materials to enhance student’s learning and try to understand how video can act as powerful and innovative to enlighten teaching and learning (note that unfortunately, sometimes, the opposite is happening).

Tendências no Twitter

Atualmente as redes sociais fazem parte do dia a dia das pessoas, sendo que para muitas delas essas plataformas tornaram-se imprescindíveis. Quer seja por mera curiosidade ou por uma necessidade imperiosa de partilhar com o mundo as suas ideias ou pensamentos, a verdade é que as pessoas utilizam cada vez mais as redes sociais. O trabalho descrito neste documento pretende explorar uma dessas redes sociais, o Twitter, mais propriamente através do estudo das suas tendências do momento ou trending topics que são expressões referidas pelos utilizadores a uma taxa superior em comparação com outras. São descritas algumas das características do Twitter e dos recursos disponíveis para programadores. Para além do estudo detalhado do Twitter, são extraídos dados de diversas fontes, destacando-se o próprio Twitter, mas também outras plataformas e jornais online. Posteriormente é feita a análise desses dados através da verificação da evolução das tendências ao longo do tempo nos diversos locais em estudo e ainda através do cruzamento de dados das várias fontes de dados, com análise dos resultados obtidos. Na análise efetuada são analisadas as tendências considerando algumas métricas, a sua globalidade, a relação das tendências com tópicos dos jornais online e ainda a sua periodicidade.

Reflexões sobre o Ensino da Pediatria em Portugal

O Ensino da Pediatria deve ser encarado como o ensino da medicina integral de um grupo etário, com especificidades muito bem definidas e áreas únicas na medicina. Devem ser tomadas em consideração as sub-especialidades que lhe são inerentes, à semalhança do que acontece na medicina dos adultos, sendo errado partir do pressuposto de que para a pediatria é necessário menos tempo de ensino. Embora saudável a competição e diversidade entre Faculdades de Medicina, seria desejável alguma uniformidade, um corpo comum de aprendizagem, nivelado por cima, pelo que é do máximo interesse a troca de experiências entre docentes e atenção à opinião dos discentes. No que respeita ao ensino pós-graduado é urgente uma reforma que actualize os currícula às exigências dos tempos modernos, permitindo que, no período oficial de formação, haja lugar para a sub especialização se o pediatra assim o entender e for entendida como útil.
