Modernitat i canvi de llengua. El pas del castellà al català a l'obra de Pere Gimferrer (aspectes crítics, teòrics i lexicomètrics)

L’objecte d’aquesta tesi es l’estudi del canvi de llengua que es produeix en l’obra poètica de Pere Gimferrer. Per arribar-hi haurem d’activar un itinerari complex – crític, teòric i metodològic -. La problemàtica que presentem intenta resoldre una qüestió central: tractar d’elucidar si aquest canvi de llengua – del castellà al català, i més tard, del català al castellà – implica necessàriament un canvi d’estil, o si, en canvi, l’estil de poeta resta estable tot i haver canviat la llengua d’escriptura. Si la recerca està orientada a trobar una possible resposta a aquesta qüestió, nosaltres ens proposem com a punt de partida l’anàlisi de les conseqüències que comporta l’escriure en diferents llengües a la modernitat. Per aquesta raó, en la tesi es desenvolupen teòricament les nocions de “frontera”, “extraterritorialitat”, o “llengua estrangera” que ens seran útils per a portar a terme la nostra anàlisi. A la darrera part, a través de la lexicometria, presentem un apropament exhaustiu a les particularitats lèxiques i sintagmàtiques de l’obra de Pere Gimferrer. Finalment, proposem una resposta a la problemàtica proposada.

Le silence des limites dans la littérature: Deux exemples :Michel de Montaigne et Marguerite Duras

The paper studies the concept of limit in literary discourse. Two aspects are discussed: 1) the limit as a necessary structuring element in the process of verbal nomination; 2) the limit as a verbal constraint which appeals to be defeated in case of extreme experience, as death, love, desire, Shoah. We analyse two examples dealing with the language restriction in the literary practice: Montaignes’ essays and Duras’ novels. Montaigne adopts a specific style of unlimited judgements and topics accumulation in a spontaneous order and logic with the purpose of revealing the deepest profile of human nature. Duras practices a minimalist writing that ruins the linear syntactic structure and the narrative model, achieving an effect of silence thus providing the possibility of unlimited meaning.

The empire strikes back: Die Postkoloniale Indische Literatur von Aussen Nach Innen

The article, which is divided into five sections, the Indian-born author of German language attempts to illustrate/illuminate the particular hurdles to determining this subject as a genre. The works discussed by male and female authors vary tremndously one from another both in theme and in style. Among them are novels and stories in traditional narrative style by Naipaul, Ghosh, Lahiri… primarily grouped by major themes of immigration. At the same time that authors such as Rushdie, Roy, Tharoor... have been endeavoring to expand the vocabulary and conventions of the English language and to further modern narrative technique. Not only is the complex Indian subcontinent and its positive and negative realities portrayed and redefined, but as a parallel occurrence, rave stories and pop novels are being written by Rushdie and Kureishi. One must note here that English is not the mother tongue of any of these writers. The English language is used as an instrument of literary and artistic expression. This essay also expounds on examples of how “Indian Writing in English” differentiates itself clearly from “The Indian Romanticism” of European literature. The postcolonial writers point an admonishing finger to the wounds of India and they ruthlessly mock the inhumane regimes of Mrs. Thatcher and of Mr. Bush. One segment is devoted to the bizarre portrayal of love, gender and sex relations that makes the reading of the books in question vexing.

Evaluating the directional effects of acoustic horn style hearing aids using the QuickSIN procedure

This paper evaluates the directional effects of two hearing devices – an antique London Dome horn style device and a constructed Cupped Hand. The comparisons were made using the Quick SIN (Speech in Noise) adaptive test which measures signal-to-noise ratio loss.

The effect of the handwriting without tears program on student cursive writing achievement at Central Institute for the Deaf (CID)

Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) is a multi-sensory program that provides a simpler approach to the instruction of cursive handwriting. It was administered to a sample of third graders to assess the effectiveness of the program and determine if it would be a viable option for handwriting instruction at CID.

Survival, Pb-uptake and behaviour of three species of earthworm in Pb treated soils determined using an OECD-style toxicity test and a soil avoidance test

Mature (clitellate) Eisenia andrei Bouche (ultra epigeic), Lumbricus rubellus Hoffmeister (epigeic), and Aporrectodea caliginosa (Savigny) (endogeic) earthworms were placed in soils treated with Pb(NO3)(2) to have concentrations in the range 1000 to 10 000 mg Pb kg(-1). After 28 days LC50(-95%confidence limit) (+95%confidence limit) values were E. andrei 5824(-361)(+898) mg Pb kg(-1), L. rubellus 2867(-193)(+145) mg Pb kg(-1) and A. caliginosa 2747(-304)(+239) mg Pb kg(-1) and EC50s for weight change were E. andrei 2841(-68)(+150) Pb kg(-1), L. rubellus 1303(-201)(+204) mg Pb kg(-1) and A. caliginosa 1208(-206)(+212) Mg Pb kg(-1). At any given soil Pb concentration, Pb tissue concentrations after 28 days were the same for all three earthworm species. In a soil avoidance test there was no difference between the behaviour of the different species. The lower sensitivity to Pb exhibited by E. andrei is most likely due to physiological adaptations associated with the modes of life of the earthworms, and could have serious implications for the use of this earthworm as the species of choice in standard toxicological testing. Women and writing c1340-c1650; the domestication of print culture

The transition from medieval manuscript to early printed book is currently a mmajor topic of academic interest, but has received little attention in relation to women's involvement. The essays in this volume both add female names to the list of those authors who created English Literature, and examine women's responses to older texts. Taking its cue from the advances made by recent work on manuscript culture and book history, this volume also includes studies of material evidence. These reveal women's participation in the making of books, and also the traces they left behind when handling individual volumes. Finally, studies of women's roles in relation to apparently ephemeral texts, such as letters, pamphlets and almanacs, challenge traditional divisions between public and private spheres and between manuscript and print.
