Discarge compilation from The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) Project

The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) data set contains monthly discharge measurements for 1018 stations located throughout the world. The period of record varies widely from station to station, with a mean of 21.5 years. These data were digitized from published UNESCO archives by Charles Voromarty, Balaze Fekete, and B.A. Tucker of the Complex Systems Research Center (CSRC) at the University of New Hampshire. River discharge is typically measured through the use of a rating curve that relates local water level height to discharge. This rating curve is used to estimate discharge from the observed water level. The rating curves are periodically rechecked and recalibrated through on-site measurement of discharge and river stage.

本稿では比較の視点から地域理解を目指す研究手法，比較地域研究を提案する。それは，同じ目的をもった行為や同じ衝撃によって生じた現象が，国・地域によって異なった現れ方をしたとき，その違いをもたらした要因を地域の文脈に求め，その分析を通して地域の特色を知ろうとする方法である。理解できる地域の特色は部分的，限定的であるから，包括的・総合的理解を目指す従来の地域研究とは異なっている。比較地域研究は地域理解を第一義的な目的とするものの，社会的現象の生じる場の構造的特色が，行為や衝撃と結果の関係にどう作用するのかという，理論的，実践的な含意をもたらしうるものである。

Elaboración de las guías docentes de segundo curso del Grado en Óptica y Optometría

En el marco del proyecto de Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria 2010-11 de la Universidad de Alicante se creó una red de trabajo formada por los profesores encargados de la docencia del segundo curso de Grado en Óptica y Optometría. El objetivo principal de esta red ha sido la elaboración de las guías docentes de las asignaturas que constituyen dicho curso, así como la coordinación de las actividades docentes de las mismas. Para ello, se debatieron las propuestas de las diferentes asignaturas, en lo que respecta a evaluación continua y evaluación de competencias transversales, y se estableció un cronograma global del curso, ubicando las actividades docentes presenciales y aquellas que contribuyen con un peso determinado a la calificación final. Con este cronograma se pudo visualizar la carga de trabajo del alumno semanalmente, así como debatir las dificultades a las que se enfrenta para superar las diversas pruebas de evaluación continua en una determinada asignatura y cómo éstas afectan al rendimiento del resto de asignaturas.

Mapping and exploring health systems' response to intimate partner violence in Spain

Background: For a comprehensive health sector response to intimate partner violence (IPV), interventions should target individual and health facility levels, along with the broader health systems level which includes issues of governance, financing, planning, service delivery, monitoring and evaluation, and demand generation. This study aims to map and explore the integration of IPV response in the Spanish national health system. Methods: Information was collected on five key areas based on WHO recommendations: policy environment, protocols, training, monitoring and prevention. A systematic review of public documents was conducted to assess 39 indicators in each of Spain’s 17 regional health systems. In addition, we performed qualitative content analysis of 26 individual interviews with key informants responsible for coordinating the health sector response to IPV in Spain. Results: In 88% of the 17 autonomous regions, the laws concerning IPV included the health sector response, but the integration of IPV in regional health plans was just 41%. Despite the existence of a supportive national structure, responding to IPV still relies strongly on the will of health professionals. All seventeen regions had published comprehensive protocols to guide the health sector response to IPV, but participants recognized that responding to IPV was more complex than merely following the steps of a protocol. Published training plans existed in 43% of the regional health systems, but none had institutionalized IPV training in medical and nursing schools. Only 12% of regional health systems collected information on the quality of the IPV response, and there are many limitations to collecting information on IPV within health services, for example underreporting, fears about confidentiality, and underuse of data for monitoring purposes. Finally, preventive activities that were considered essential were not institutionalized anywhere. Conclusions: Within the Spanish health system, differences exist in terms of achievements both between regions and between the areas assessed. Progress towards integration of IPV has been notable at the level of policy, less outstanding regarding health service delivery, and very limited in terms of preventive actions.

On the existence of exponential polynomials with prefixed gaps

This paper shows that the conjecture of Lapidus and Van Frankenhuysen on the set of dimensions of fractality associated with a nonlattice fractal string is true in the important special case of a generic nonlattice self-similar string, but in general is false. The proof and the counterexample of this have been given by virtue of a result on exponential polynomials P(z), with real frequencies linearly independent over the rationals, that establishes a bound for the number of gaps of RP, the closure of the set of the real projections of its zeros, and the reason for which these gaps are produced.

Eye Gaze Behavior at Turn Transition: How Aphasic Patients Process Speakers' Turns during Video Observation

The human turn-taking system regulates the smooth and precise exchange of speaking turns during face-to-face interaction. Recent studies investigated the processing of ongoing turns during conversation by measuring the eye movements of noninvolved observers. The findings suggest that humans shift their gaze in anticipation to the next speaker before the start of the next turn. Moreover, there is evidence that the ability to timely detect turn transitions mainly relies on the lexico-syntactic content provided by the conversation. Consequently, patients with aphasia, who often experience deficits in both semantic and syntactic processing, might encounter difficulties to detect and timely shift their gaze at turn transitions. To test this assumption, we presented video vignettes of natural conversations to aphasic patients and healthy controls, while their eye movements were measured. The frequency and latency of event-related gaze shifts, with respect to the end of the current turn in the videos, were compared between the two groups. Our results suggest that, compared with healthy controls, aphasic patients have a reduced probability to shift their gaze at turn transitions but do not show significantly increased gaze shift latencies. In healthy controls, but not in aphasic patients, the probability to shift the gaze at turn transition was increased when the video content of the current turn had a higher lexico-syntactic complexity. Furthermore, the results from voxel-based lesion symptom mapping indicate that the association between lexico-syntactic complexity and gaze shift latency in aphasic patients is predicted by brain lesions located in the posterior branch of the left arcuate fasciculus. Higher lexico-syntactic processing demands seem to lead to a reduced gaze shift probability in aphasic patients. This finding may represent missed opportunities for patients to place their contributions during everyday conversation.
