Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are critical components of today's open source software. Given their increased relevance, the correctness and usability of GUIs are becoming essential. This paper describes the latest results in the development of our tool to reverse engineer the GUI layer of interactive computing open source systems. We use static analysis techniques to generate models of the user interface behavior from source code. Models help in graphical user interface inspection by allowing designers to concentrate on its more important aspects. One particular type of model that the tool is able to generate is state machines. The paper shows how graph theory can be useful when applied to these models. A number of metrics and algorithms are used in the analysis of aspects of the user interface's quality. The ultimate goal of the tool is to enable analysis of interactive system through GUIs source code inspection.

This paper presents a study carried out in order to evaluate the students' perception in the development and use of remote Control and Automation education kits developed by two Universities. Three projects, based on real world environments, were implemented, being local and remotely operated. Students implemented the kits using the theoretical and practical knowledge, being the teachers a catalyst in the learning process. When kits were operational, end-user students got acquainted to the kits in the course curricula units. It is the author's believe that successful results were achieved not only in the learning progress on the Automation and Control fields (hard skills) but also on the development of the students soft skills, leading to encouraging and rewarding goals, motivating their future decisions and promoting synergies in their work. The design of learning experimental kits by students, under teacher supervision, for future use in course curricula by enduser students is an advantageous and rewarding experience.

The work presented herein follows an ongoing research that aims to analyze methodological practices to be applied in Design Education. A reflection about methodological strategies in Design Education and the function of drawing in Design represents the beginning of this study. Then, we developed an interdisciplinary pedagogical experience with the Graphic Design 1st grade students from our institution (IPCA). In the current academic year, 2013/2014, we continue to evolve this project, introducing changes in the initial proposal. Major alterations focused on the aspects that could be strengthened in terms of interdisciplinarity. In this article, the authors describe those changes and discuss the outcomes of the novel proposal. As we have already reported, this investigation follows a reflection about working methods to be adopted in Design Education. This is in accordance with other previously published works that purpose the enlargement of Design into new knowledge fields such as Experience or Service Design, changing not only the role of the graphic designer, but also the skills required to be a professional designer (Alain Findelli, 2001), (Brian Lawson, 2006), (Ciampa-Brewer, 2010). Furthermore, concepts such as cooperation or multidisciplinary design, amongst others, have been frequently debated as design teaching strategies (Heller and Talarico, 2011, pp. 82-85). These educational approaches also have an impact on our research. The analysis of all these authors’ contributions together with a reflection on our teaching practice allowed us to propose an improved interdisciplinary intervention.

Neste artigo pretende-se compreender a aversão que designers (e arquitectos, inclusive) sentem verdadeiramente em relação “ao computador”. Se de um modo ele é um excelente parceiro aceite por todos, simultaneamente, é com muita apreensão que se programam currículos de disciplinas universitárias para que os alunos aprendam as características projectuais do design, desenvolvam capacidade criativa (inteligência no uso de recursos para a produção de conceitos ou objectos) usando o computador sistematicamente, ou seja, não apenas como uma ferramenta de desenho, mas também de projecto (design). Os automatismos continuam a ser os monstros de hoje, porém, como aqui defendemos, os computadores sempre projectaram sombra humana, são “apenas” máquinas hipermédias que recorrem a existentes tecnologias para, supostamente, criarem novas mais transparentes na relação homem-máquina.

O Código dos contratos públicos (CCP) veio introduzir alguns novos conceitos, nas empreitadas de obras públicas, sobre erros e omissões e também sobre trabalhos a mais. Tais conceitos têm estado na origem de algumas polémicas envolvendo donos de obra, projectistas, fiscalizações, empreiteiros e técnicos. Por outro, quer à luz da anterior legislação quer ao abrigo da actual os desvios de preço e prazo, em empreitadas de obras públicas, continuam a ser frequentes, dir-se-á mesmo, praticamente uma constante e frequentemente alvo nos meios de comunicação. No âmbito desta dissertação pretende-se partilhar algumas reflexões emergentes da observação efectuada, como participante activo em diversos empreendimentos. Verificar-se-á ao longo da mesma dissertação que nela é atribuída grande relevância ao programa preliminar constante do Anexo I à Portaria n.º 701-H/2008 de 29 de Julho, que dá origem ao projecto. Com efeito, este documento embora a sua designação de preliminar possa induzir em erro, levando a conferir-lhe pouca importância, é, em boa verdade, o programa fundamental, para um bom entendimento entre o dono de obra e o projectista e subsequentemente com o empreiteiro. Nesta dissertação faz-se uma incursão pelos conteúdos mais relevantes do CCP, no âmbito dos desvios de preço e custo, das empreitadas de obras públicas. Procede-se, também, a uma análise detalhada e sequencial das fases e actividades que contribuem para a concretização de uma obra pública, observando simultaneamente o papel dos diversos intervenientes.

This article describes the main research results in a new methodology, in which the stages and strategies of the technology integration process are identified and described. A set of principles and recommendations are therefore presented. The MIPO model described in this paper is a result of the effort made regarding the understanding of the main success features of good practices, in the web environment, integrated in the information systems/information technology context. The initial model has been created, based on experiences and literature review. After that, it was tested in the information and technology system units at higher school and also adapted as a result of four cycles of an actionresearch work combined with a case study research. The information, concepts and procedures presented here give support to teachers and instructors, instructional designers and planning teams – anyone who wants to develop effective b‐learning instructions.

Interagindo com a evolução do vestuário, o desporto em geral e o ténis em particular têm influenciado ao longo dos tempos a Moda, sendo o contrário também verdadeiro. Assim, muitos dos trajes adaptados à prática desportiva vão passando para o traje quotidiano, da mesma forma que algumas das inovações da Moda são incorporadas no vestuário usado para praticar desporto, ao nível da forma, mas também das cores, padrões, ornamentos, etc., sendo ainda possível verificar neste âmbito a influência dos designers de moda que não raro têm produzido indumentária desportiva.

The development of accurate mass spectrometry, enabling the identification of all the ions extracted from the ion source in a high current implanter is described. The spectrometry system uses two signals (x-y graphic), one proportional to the magnetic field (x-axes), taken from the high-voltage potential with an optic fiber system, and the other proportional to the beam current intensity (y-axes), taken from a beam-stop. The ion beam mass register in a mass spectrum of all the elements magnetically analyzed with the same radius and defined by a pair of analyzing slits as a function of their beam intensity is presented. The developed system uses a PC to control the displaying of the extracted beam mass spectrum, and also recording of all data acquired for posterior analysis. The operator uses a LabView code that enables the interfacing between an I/O board and the ion implanter. The experimental results from an ion implantation experiment are shown. In this paper we study the optimal natural gas commitment for a known demand scenario. This study implies the best location of GSUs to supply all demands and the optimal allocation from sources to gas loads, through an appropriate transportation mode, in order to minimize total system costs. Our emphasis is on the formulation and use of a suitable optimization model, reflecting real-world operations and the constraints of natural gas systems. The mathematical model is based on a Lagrangean heuristic, using the Lagrangean relaxation, an efficient approach to solve the problem. Computational results are presented for Iberian and American natural gas systems, geographically organized in 65 and 88 load nodes, respectively. The location model results, supported by the computational application GasView, show the optimal location and allocation solution, system total costs and suggest a suitable gas transportation mode, presented in both numerical and graphic supports.

Designing electric installation projects, demands not only academic knowledge, but also other types of knowledge not easily acquired through traditional instructional methodologies. A lot of additional empirical knowledge is missing and so the academic instruction must be completed with different kinds of knowledge, such as real-life practical examples and simulations. On the other hand, the practical knowledge detained by the most experienced designers is not formalized in such a way that is easily transmitted. In order to overcome these difficulties present in the engineers formation, we are developing an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), for training and support concerning the development of electrical installation projects to be used by electrical engineers, technicians and students.

A figura do iluminador (lighting designer) surge nesta dissertação como ponto de partida para um esboço de estudo acerca do autor do desenho de luz no espectáculo teatral em Portugal. Baseámo-nos num dos mais conceituados iluminadores (lighting designer) portugueses, Orlando Worm, para pesquisarmos o que o próprio trouxe aos novos designers de luz que continuam a percorrer um longo e, por vezes, solitário caminho nesta arte criativa. Considerámos para tal tecnologias criadas entre as décadas de 30 a 70 por alguns dos maiores nomes ligados à matéria: Stanley McCandless, Frederick Bentham, Richard Pilbrow e Francis Reid. Estes autores servem-nos como ponto de partida para depois indagarmos se a partir da década de 80 se utiliza algum destes métodos. Ao reflectir acerca destas tecnologias e da própria experiência de Orlando Worm, pretende-se concluir que o trabalho de desenho de luz é, de facto, um trabalho criativo e artístico, na medida em que a figura do iluminador (lighting designer) tem, ou deve ter, um contributo activo no processo teatral.
