The paper describes the strategies for Congestion and Incident Management (CIM) on the basis of Automatic Congestion and Incident Detection (ACID) that COSMOS will develop, implement in SCOOT, UTOPIA and MOTION, and validate and demonstrate in London, Piraeus and Torino. Four levels of operation were defined for CIM: strategies, tactics, tools and realisation. The strategies for CIM form the top level of this hierarchy. They have to reflect the strategic requirements of the system operators. The tactics are the means that can be employed by the strategies to achieve particular goals in particular situations. The tools that are used by the tactics relate to the elements of the signal plan and the ways in which they can be modified. Strategies, tactics and tools are generally common to all three systems, while the realisation of individual strategies and tactical decisions, through the use of particular common sets of tools, will generally be system specific. This thesis focused on medical students’ language learning strategies for patient encounters. The research questions concerned the types of learning strategies that medical students use and the differences between the preclinical students and the clinical students, two groups who have had varying amounts of experience with patients. Additionally, strategy use was examined through activity systems to gain information on the context of language learning strategy use in order to learn language for patient encounters. In total, 130 first-year medical students (preclinical) and 39 fifth-year medical students (clinical) participated in the study by filling in a questionnaire on language learning strategies. In addition, two students were interviewed in order to create activity systems for the medical students at different stages of their studies. The study utilised both quantitative and qualitative research methods; the analysis of the results relies on Oxford’s Strategic Self-Regulation Model in the quantitative part and on activity theory in the qualitative part. The theoretical sections of the study introduced earlier research and theories regarding English for specific purposes, language learning strategies and activity theory. The results indicated that the medical students use affective, sociocultural-interactive and metasociocultural-interactive strategies often and avoid using negative strategies, which hinder language learning or cease communication altogether. Slight differences between the preclinical and clinical students were found, as clinical students appear to use affective and metasociocultural-interactive strategies more frequently compared to the preclinical students. The activity systems of the two students interviewed were rather similar. The students were at different stages of their studies, but their opinions were very similar. Both reported the object of learning to be mutual understanding between the patient and the doctor, which in part explains the preference for strategies that support communication and interaction. The results indicate that the nature of patient encounters affects the strategy use of the medical students at least to some extent.

Uncovering mechanisms of unknown pathological mechanisms and body response to applied medication are the drive forces toward personalized medicine. In this post-genomic era, all eyes are tuned to proteomic field, searching for the answers and explanations by investigating the final physiological functional units – proteins and their proteoforms. Development of cutting-edge mass spectrometric technologies and powerful bioinformatics tools, allowed life-science community mining of disease-specific proteins as biomarkers, which are often hidden by high complexity of the samples and/or small abundance. Nowadays, there are several proteomics-based approaches to study the proteome. This chapter focuses on gold standard proteomics strategies and related issues towards candidate biomarker discovery, which may have diagnostic/prognostic as well as mechanistic utility.

Decision–making by physicians on patients’ treatment has received increased research attention. Research on the effect of marketing strategies on prescription behaviour has tended to generate controversial results. While some researchers reported a strong influence, some found only moderate effects, while others find no influence at all. The main objective of this paper is to review the influence of the marketing strategies by pharmaceutical firms and contextual factors on physician attitude to drug prescription. The paper presents comprehensive information on pharmaceutical marketing efforts through exhaustive review of relevant literature, and identifies the moderating effects of contextual factors on physician prescribing decisions. It also presents a crucial conceptual model for explaining the theoretical linkages between marketing strategies of pharmaceutical firms, contextual factors and the decision of the physician regarding drug prescription.

Exploring the relationship between early oral reading fluency ability and reading comprehension achievement among an ethnically and racially diverse sample of young learners from low-income families, attending elementary school within a large public school district in southeast Florida is the purpose of this longitudinal study. Although many studies have been conducted to address the relationship between oral reading fluency ability and reading comprehension achievement, most of the existing research failed either to disaggregate the data by demographic subgroups or secure a large enough sample of students to adequately represent the diverse subgroups. The research questions that guided this study were: (a) To what extent does early oral reading fluency ability measured in first, second, or third grade correlate with reading comprehension achievement in third grade? (b) To what extent does the relationship of early oral reading fluency ability and reading comprehension achievement vary by demographic subgroup membership (i.e., gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status) among a diverse sample of students? A predictive research design using archived secondary data was employed in this nonexperimental quantitative methods study of 1,663 third grade students who attended a cohort of 25 Reading First funded schools. The data analyzed derived from the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Oral Reading Fluency (DIBELS ORF) measure administered in first, second, and third grades and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test of the Sunshine State Standards (FCAT-SSS) Reading administered in third grade. Linear regression analyses between each of the oral reading fluency and reading comprehension measures produced significant positive correlations. Hierarchical regression analyses supported the predictive potential of all three oral reading fluency ability measures toward reading comprehension achievement, with the first grade oral reading fluency ability measure explaining the most significant variance in third grade reading comprehension achievement. Male students produced significant overall differences in variance when compared to female students as did the Other student subgroup (i.e., Asian, Multiracial, and Native American) when compared to Black, White, and Hispanic students. No significant differences in variance were produced between students from low and moderate socioeconomic families. These findings are vital toward adding to the literature of diverse young learners.

The Oporto's St. Lourenço Church of the Jesuit College is locally known, since the St. Augustin Barefooted Eremites occupation (1779/80), as Grilos' Church. The Oporto's siege laid by D. Pedro and D. Miguel (1832/33) succeed in the college abandonment by Grilo's Friars. Throughout Augustin Friars presence period, the white plasters of the nave (end of 18th c.) were executed and it was constructed the Holly Sacrament Chapel (early 19th c.) with neoclassic coloured stuccos and plasters, influenced by Robert Adam, Luigi Chiari and Teixeira Barreto ornamental motifs. Pigments were added to the external layer to imitate the marble and to achieve the “base” colour of the panels. This study of the blue, rose and white stuccos and plasters of H.S. Chapel of Grilo's Church allows carrying out useful database on the original mortars composition by the use of different analytical techniques, important to select the most adequate solutions for restoration interventions. Optical microscopy, XRD, TG-DTA, SEM-EDS, XRF analysis results were considered to identify the composition of different layers and to provide mineralogical, microstructure and chemical characterization of the mortars components and to quantify the binder content in those mortars. These results were compared with collected information on compositions from other sources. This study allowed the identification of the decay causes of decorative stuccos and plaster, suggesting that water retention in the masonries and wooden laths structure of the dome of the chapel is the main factor.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most diverse areas in the world and considered a hotspot. Several actions are needed for its preservation, among them the implementation of the Biodiversity Corridors. The Atlantic Forest has three biodiversity corridors and the Rio de Janeiro State, which harbors huge species diversity, is in the Serra do Mar Corridor. We developed socioeconomic, political and environmental indicators to present conservation strategies supported by a wide database. These indicators complemented the previous surveys of priority areas which emphasized biotic elements, and their integration allowed the elaboration of strategies for the conservation and management, regionally directed, to support actions to be implemented by the Government. The analysis was done considering three subjects: Anthropic Pressure, Physical and Biotic State, and Present Ability of Response. Data analysis followed a synthesis-aggregation schedule and the resulting database was taken to a workshop, where specialists proposed strategies and actions for the conservation. These strategies were discussed considering vegetation remnant distribution, biological relevance, environmental vulnerability, kind of anthropic pressure in the region and potential for success of the actions proposed, based on the ability of response. Rio de Janeiro State is very diverse in biotic, physical, political, socioeconomic and cultural aspects which demand specific actions for each region. So, depending on the present situation of the natural and anthropic environments and on the present and future sources of degradation, regionally directed actions are applicable. This specificity in conservation actions will enable that the State remnants will be more successfully protected.

This PhD project aimed to (i) investigate the effects of three nutritional strategies (supplementation of a synbiotic, a muramidase, or arginine) on growth performance, gut health, and metabolism of broilers fed without antibiotics under thermoneutral and heat stress conditions and to (ii) explore the impacts of heat stress on hypothalamic regulation of feed intake in three broiler lines from diverse stages of genetic selection and in the red jungle fowl, the ancestor of domestic chickens. Synbiotic improved feed efficiency and footpad health, increased Firmicutes and reduced Bacteroidetes in the ceca of birds kept in thermoneutral conditions, while did not mitigate the impacts of heat stress on growth performance. Under optimal thermal conditions, muramidase increased final body weight and reduced cumulative feed intake and feed conversion ratio in a dose-dependent way. The highest dose reduced the risk of footpad lesions, cecal alpha diversity, the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio, and butyrate producers, increased Bacteroidaceae and Lactobacillaceae, plasmatic levels of bioenergetic metabolites, and reduced the levels of pro-oxidant metabolites. The same dose, however, failed to reduce the effects of heat stress on growth performance. Arginine supplementation improved growth rate, final body weight, and feed efficiency, increased plasmatic levels of arginine and creatine and hepatic levels of creatine and essential amino acids, reduced alpha diversity, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria (especially Escherichia coli), and increased Bacteroidetes and Lactobacillus salivarius in the ceca of thermoneutral birds. No arginine-mediated attenuation of heat stress was found. Heat stress altered protein metabolism and caused the accumulation of antioxidant and protective molecules in oxidative stress-sensitive tissues. Arginine supplementation, however, may have partially counterbalanced the effects of heat stress on energy homeostasis. Stable gene expression of (an)orexigenic neuropeptides was found in the four chicken populations studied, but responses to hypoxia and heat stress appeared to be related to feed intake regulation.
