There has been a significant increase in the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and the costs associated with these are predicted to increase as the popularity of computer use increases at home, school and work. Risk factors have been identified in the adult population but little is known about the risk factors for children and youth. Research has demonstrated that they are not immune to this risk and that they are self reporting the same pain as adults. The purpose of the study was to examine children’s postures while working at computer workstations under two conditions. One was at an ergonomically adjusted children’s workstation while the second was at an average adult workstation. A Polhemus Fastrak™ system was used to record the children’s postures and joint and segment angles were quantified. Results of the study showed that children reported more discomfort and effort at the adult workstation. Segment and joint angles showed significant differences through the upper limb at the adult workstation. Of significance was the strategy of shoulder abduction and flexion that the children used in order to place their hand on the mouse. Ulnar deviation was also greater at the adult workstation as was neck extension. All of these factors have been identified in the literature as increasing the risk for injury. A comparison of the children’s posture while playing at the children’s workstation verses the adult workstation, showed that the postural angles assumed by the children at an adult workstation exceeded the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) recommendations. Further investigation is needed to increase our knowledge of MSD in children as their potential for long term damage has yet to be determined.

The recent crisis of the capitalistic economic system has altered the working conditions and occupations in the European Union. The recession situation has accelerated trends and has brought transformations that have been observed before. Changes have not looked the same way in all the countries of the Union. The social occupation norms, labour relations models and the type of global welfare provision can help underline some of these inequalities. Poor working conditions can expose workers to situations of great risk. This is one of the basic assumptions of the theoretical models and analytical studies of the approach to the psychosocial work environment. Changes in working conditions of the population seems to be important to explain in the worst health states. To observe these features in the current period of economic recession it has made a comparative study of trend through the possibilities of the European Working Conditions Survey in the 2005 and 2010 editions. It has also set different multivariate logistic regression models to explore potential partnerships with the worst conditions of employment and work. It seems that the economic crisis has intensified changes in working conditions and highlighted the effects of those conditions on the poor health of the working population. This conclusion can’t be extended for all EU countries; some differences were observed in terms of global welfare models.

PURPOSE: The use of information and communication technology (ICT) is common in modern working life. ICT demands may give rise to experience of work-related stress. Knowledge about ICT demands in relation to other types of work-related stress and to self-rated health is limited. Consequently, the aim of this study was to examine the association between ICT demands and two types of work-related stress [job strain and effort-reward imbalance (ERI)] and to evaluate the association between these work-related stress measures and self-rated health, in general and in different SES strata. METHODS: This study is based on cross-sectional data from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health collected in 2014, from 14,873 gainfully employed people. ICT demands, job strain, ERI and self-rated health were analysed as the main measures. Sex, age, SES, lifestyle factors and BMI were used as covariates. RESULTS: ICT demands correlated significantly with the dimensions of the job strain and ERI models, especially with the demands (r = 0.42; p < 0.01) and effort (r = 0.51; p < 0.01) dimensions. ICT demands were associated with suboptimal self-rated health, also after adjustment for age, sex, SES, lifestyle and BMI (OR 1.49 [95 % CI 1.36-1.63]), but job strain (OR 1.93 [95 % CI 1.74-2.14) and ERI (OR 2.15 [95 % CI 1.95-2.35]) showed somewhat stronger associations with suboptimal self-rated health. CONCLUSION: ICT demands are common among people with intermediate and high SES and associated with job strain, ERI and suboptimal self-rated health. ICT demands should thus be acknowledged as a potential stressor of work-related stress in modern working life.

Introdução: As disfunções temporomandibulares assumem um papel cada vez mais importante na prática diária do médico dentista pois são uma desordem músculo-esquelética com elevado impacto na vida das pessoas. Desenvolvimento: Caracterizadas por uma etiologia multifactorial, desde cedo que os estudos científicos procuraram determinar quais os factores causais despoletantes e perpetuantes das disfunções. É importante a avaliação individual de cada caso clínico pois vários factores têm sido de uma forma mais ou menos profunda relacionadas com o desenrolar destas patologias. Ao longo dos anos, o papel que a oclusão representa no desenvolvimento das disfunções temporomandibulares tem sido excessivamente debatido levando a variadas opiniões e a elevada controvérsia. O seu impacto nas disfunções do sistema mastigatório veio a repercutir-se no tema da ortodontia e este interesse deveu-se essencialmente ao fato de o tratamento ortodôntico alterar as condições oclusais dos pacientes despoletando dúvidas sobre qual a influência desta terapêutica como factor causal de disfunções temporomandibulares posteriores ao tratamento. Conclusão: O sucesso do tratamento da disfunção temporomandibular depende de uma análise criteriosa da situação clínica e dos seus factores etiológicos, para que se seleccione a terapêutica adequada. É importante estudar cada caso, planear e adaptar a correcta terapêutica às diferentes situações. Da mesma forma, o sucesso do tratamento ortodôntico requer as mesmas premissas para um resultado final positivo, quer do ponto de vista estético como funcional.

Background: Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a widely used therapeutic group in the world, and particularly in the Portuguese population. Objective: To compare NSAID’s use by prescription and self-medication acquisition and to determine the pattern of indication of NSAIDs, their usage profile and possible implications for patients’ safety. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used where individuals presenting at a community pharmacy requesting NSAIDs during the study period (one month) were invited to answer a face-to-face interview where socio-demographic characteristics, the indication pattern and previous experience of side effects were assessed. A follow-up interview was performed one week later to assess the incidence of adverse effects. The study was ethically approved. Results: A sample of 130 NSAIDs users was recruited, comprising mostly women (n=87; 66.9%), actively employed (n=77; 59.2%) and presenting a mean age of 49.5 years old (SD=20.49). An equal proportion of individuals acquired NSAIDs by self-medication and with medical prescription (n=65; 50%). Over 4/5 of patients (n=57; 87.7%) acquiring NSAIDs without a prescription were self-medicated by their own initiative, and only 10.8% (n=7) had been advised by the pharmacist. The most commonly acquired active substances were ibuprofen and diclofenac. Self-medicated users more frequently resorted to topical NSAIDs following short term treatments. The major underlying condition motivating NSAIDs sought were musculoskeletal disorders (45.0%), regardless of the regimen. An important proportion of prevalent users of NSAIDs reported previous experience of adverse effects (11.3%). One week after initiating NSAID therapy, a small proportion of patients reported incidence of adverse effects. Conclusion: Self-medication with NSAIDs is sought for numerous medical conditions. Reported adverse effects (prevalent and incident) confirm the need for a more rational use of NSAIDs and ongoing pharmacovigilance.

Mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, are among the most prevalent mental illnesses with high socioeconomic impact. Although the underlying mechanisms have not yet been clearly defined in the last decade the importance of the role of neuropeptides, including Galanin (GAL), and/or their receptors in the treatment of stress-related mood disorders is becoming increasingly apparent. GAL is involved in mood regulation, including depression-related and anxiety-like behaviors. Activation of GALR1 and GALR3 receptors results in a depression like behavior while stimulation of GALR2 receptor leads to anti-depressant-like effects. Moreover, GAL modulates 5-HT1A receptors (5-HT1AR), a key receptor in depression at autoreceptor and postsynaptic level in the brain. This interaction can in part be due to the existence of GALR1-5-HT1AR heteroreceptor complexes in discrete brain regions [1]. Not only GAL but also the N-terminal fragments like GAL(1-15) are active in the Central Nervous System [2, 3]. Recently, we described that GAL(1-15) induces strong depression-related and anxiogenic-like effects in rats, and these effects were significantly stronger than the ones induced by GAL [4]. The GALR1-GALR2 heteroreceptor complexes in the dorsal hippocampus and especially in the dorsal raphe (DR), areas rich in GAL(1-15) binding sites [5] were involved in these effects [4, 6] and demonstrated also in cellular models. In the present study, we have analyzed the ability of GAL(1-15) to modulate 5-HT1AR located at postjunctional sites and at the soma-dendritic level in rats. We have analyzed the effect of GAL(1-15) on the 5-HT1AR-mediated response in a behavioral test of depression and the involvement of the GALR2 in these effects. GAL(1-15) enhanced the antidepressant effects induced by the 5-HT1AR agonist 8-OH-DPAT in the forced swimming test [7]. These effects were stronger than the ones induced by GAL. The mechanism of this action involved interactions at the receptor level in the plasma membrane with changes also at the transcriptional level. Thus, GAL(1-15) affected the binding characteristics as well as the mRNA level of 5-HT1AR in the dorsal hippocampus and DR. GALR2 was involved in these effects, since the specific GALR2 antagonist M871 blocked GAL(1-15) mediated actions at the behavioral and receptor level [7]. Furthermore, the results on the proximity ligation assay (PLA) in this work suggest the existence of GALR1-GALR2-5-HT1AR heteroreceptor complexes since positive PLA were obtained for both GALR1-5-HT1AR and GALR2-5-HT1AR complexes in the DR and hippocampus. Moreover the studies on RN33B cells, where GALR1, GALR2 and 5-HT1AR exist [4], also showed PLA-positive clusters indicating the existence of GALR1-5-HT1AR and GALR2-5-HT1AR complexes in these cells [7]. In conclusion, our results indicate that GAL(1–15) enhances the antidepressant effects induced by the 5-HT1AR agonist 8-OH-DPAT probably acting on GALR1-GALR2-5-HT1AR heteroreceptor located at postjunctional sites and at the soma-dendritic level. The development of new drugs specifically targeting these heteroreceptor complexes may offer a novel strategy for treatment of depression. This work has been supported by Junta de Andalucia CVI646 1. Employees maintain a personal view toward their work, which can be referred to as their work orientation. Some employees view their work as their life’s purpose (i.e., calling work orientation) and they tend to be 1) prosocially motivated, 2) derive meaning from work, and 3) feel that their purpose is from beyond the self. The purpose of the current dissertation was to differentiate calling work orientation from other similar workplace constructs, to investigate the most common covariates of calling work orientation, and to empirically test two possible moderators of the relationship between calling work orientation and work-related outcomes of job satisfaction, job performance, and work engagement. Two independent samples were collected for the purpose of testing hypotheses: data were collected from 520 working students and from 520 non-student employees. Participants from the student sample were recruited at Florida International University, and participants from the employee sample were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. Participants from the student sample answered demographic questions and responded to self-report measures of job satisfaction, job performance, work engagement, spirituality, meaningful work, prosocial motivation, and work orientation. The procedure was similar for the employee sample, but their survey also included measures of counterproductive work behaviors, organizational citizenship behaviors, conscientiousness, and numerical ability. Additionally, employees were asked whether they would be willing to have a direct supervisor, peer, co-worker, client, or subordinate rate their job performance. Hierarchical regression findings suggest calling work orientation was predictive of overall job performance above and beyond two common predictors of performance, conscientiousness and numerical ability. The results for the covariate analyses provided evidence that prosocial motivation, meaningful work, and spirituality do play a significant role in the development of an employees’ work orientation. Perceived career opportunities moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and job performance for the employee sample. Core self-evaluations moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and job performance, and core self-evaluations moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and work engagement. Collectively, findings from the current study highlight the benefits of examining work orientation in the prediction of workplace outcomes.

Introduction: The work environment and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practice have changed over the last number of years. A holistic OHS approach has been recommended by the authorities in this field (e.g. World Health Organisation (WHO), European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO)). This involves a unified action engaging elements of the physical and psychosocial workplace with greater focus on prevention and promotion of health and wellbeing. The health and safety practitioner (HSP) has been recognised as one of the main agents for implementation of OHS. Within an organisation they act as a leader of change and a professional who shapes health and safety while safeguarding the wellbeing of individuals at work. Additionally, safety climate (SC) has been developed as an essential concept for OHS of an organisation, its productivity and the wellbeing of its workforce. Scholars and practitioners have recognised the great need for further empirical evidence on the HSP’s role in a changing work environment that increasingly requires the use of preventative measures and the assessment and management of psychosocial work-related risks. This doctoral research brings together the different concepts used in OHS and Public Health including SC, Psychosocial workplace risks, Health Promotion and OHS performance. The associations between these concepts are analysed bearing in mind the WHO Healthy Workplace Framework and three of its main components (physical and psychosocial work environment and health resources). This thesis aims to establish a deeper understanding of the practice and management of OHS in Ireland and the UK, exploring the role of HSPs (employed in diverse sectors of activity) and of SC in the OHS of organisations. Methods: One systematic review and three cross-sectional research studies were performed. The systematic review focussed on the evidence compiled for the association of SC with accidents and injuries at work, clarifying this concept’s definition and its most relevant dimensions. The second article (chapter 3) explored the association of SC with accidents and injuries in a sample of workers (n=367) from a pharmaceutical industry and compared permanent with non-permanent workers. Associations of safety climate with employment status and with self-reported occupational accidents/injuries were studied through logistic regression modelling. The third and fourth papers in this thesis investigated the main tasks performed by HSPs, their perceptions of SC, health climate (HC), psychosocial risk factors and health outcomes as well as work efficacy. Validated questionnaires were applied to a sample of HSPs in Ireland and UK, members of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (n=1444). Chi-square analysis and logistic regression were used to assess the association between HSPs work characteristics and their involvement in the management of Psychosocial Risk Factors, Safety Culture and Health Promotion (paper 3). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the association between SC, HC, psychosocial risk factors and health outcomes (general health and mental wellbeing) and self-efficacy. Results: As shown in the systematic review, scientific evidence is unable to establish the widely assumed causal link between SC and accidents and injuries. Nevertheless, the current results suggested that, particularly, the organisational dimensions of SC were associated with accidents and injuries and that SC is linked to health, wellbeing and safety performance in the organisation. According to the present research, contingent workers had lower SC perceptions but showed a lower accident/injury rate than their permanent colleagues. The associations of safety climate with accidents/injuries had opposite directions for the two types of workers as for permanent employees it showed an inverse relationship while for temporary workers, although not significant, a positive association was found. This thesis’ findings showed that HSPs are, to a very small degree, included in activities related to psychosocial risk management and assessment, to a moderate degree, involved in HP activities and, to a large degree, engaged in the management of safety culture in organisations. In the final research study, SC and HC were linked to job demands-control-support (JDCS), health, wellbeing and efficacy. JDCS were also associated with all three outcomes under study. Results also showed the contribution of psychosocial risk factors to the association of SC and HC with all the studied outcomes. These associations had rarely been recorded previously. Discussion & Conclusions: Health and safety climate showed a significant association with health, wellbeing and efficacy - a relationship which affects working conditions and the health and wellbeing of the workforce. This demonstrates the link of both SC and HC with the OHS and the general strength or viability of organisations. A division was noticed between the area of “health” and “safety” in the workplace and in the approach to the physical and psychosocial work environment. These findings highlighted the current challenge in ensuring a holistic and multidisciplinary approach for prevention of hazards and for an integrated OHS management. HSPs have shown to be a pivotal agent in the shaping and development of OHS in organisations. However, as observed in this thesis, the role of these professionals is still far from the recommended involvement in the management of psychosocial risk factors and could have a more complete engagement in other areas of OHS such as health promotion. Additionally, a strong culture of health and safety with supportive management and buy-in from all stakeholders is essential to achieve the ideal unified and prevention-focussed approach to OHS as recommended by the WHO, EU-OSHA and ILO.

Introducción: Los trastornos musculoesqueléticos de origen laboral son la primera causa de baja en los trabajadores produciendo disminución de la capacidad productiva y reducción del salario y para las empresas suponen disfunciones de la actividad y pérdidas económicas. Objetivo: Identificar la prevalencia de síntomas musculoesqueléticos del personal tanto operativo como administrativo que laboran en la central eléctrica en Norte de Santander. Metodología: Estudio de corte transversal en una población de 184 trabajadores que laboran para la sección de gestión y control de pérdidas de energía en la Central eléctrica de Norte de Santander. Se utilizó como instrumento para la recolección de información el cuestionario Nórdico de Kuorinka en su versión en español, que permite realizar la detección y análisis de síntomas musculoesqueléticos de la población expuesta, el cual consta de dos partes, la primera que incluye datos socio demográficos tales como antecedentes personales y actividad laboral y la segunda que permite registrar síntomas músculo-esqueléticos en los segmentos corporales (cuello, hombros, codos, muñecas/manos, espalda superior, espalda inferior). El análisis descriptivo incluyó el cálculo de la media y los porcentajes y para estimar asociaciones se utilizó odds ratio (OR) Resultados: El 88% de los trabajadores eran hombres, con una media de edad de 36,1(±10,5) años. El 20,7% percibía molestias en el cuello y el 17,4 % en las muñecas. Tuvieron más riesgo de percibir molestias en la región del cuello las mujeres (OR 20,54), los trabajadores que pertenecen al sector administrativo (OR 15,9), los que no realizar actividad física (OR 2,33), los que tienen menos de 1 año en el cargo (OR 2,9) y los que tenían un Índice de masa corporal mayor de 25 (OR 1,31). Conclusiones: Ser mujer y trabajar en el sector administrativo influyen en la percepción de molestias y síntomas osteomusculares con mayor prevalencia en las zonas corporales de el cuello y las muñecas o manos. De acuerdo a lo encontrado en el estudio se sugiere la realización de actividades en salud laboral que prevengan el riesgo ergonómico.

Objetivo: Identificar la relación de los factores de riesgo ocupacional del trabajo infantil con los problemas de comportamiento en menores de edad trabajadores de una plaza de mercado en Colombia Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal con 100 niños trabajadores de la plaza de Mercaneiva. Se aplicó un cuestionario para evaluar los factores ocupacionales en la población, evaluando aspectos sociodemográficos y condiciones laborales; para establecer la prevalencia de los problemas del comportamiento se utilizó el cuestionario sobre el comportamiento de niños niñas de 6-18 años (CBCL- 01). El análisis de los datos se realizó mediante SPSS versión 26, con un análisis estadístico cualitativo por medio de proporciones y tablas de frecuencia, se usaron además medidas de tendencia central y dispersión. Se hizo un análisis bivariado entre los problemas de comportamiento y los factores ocupacionales utilizando el coeficiente de Spearman. Resultados: Se determinaron 3 parámetros relacionados entre los factores ocupacionales y los problemas de conductas que fueron la edad mínima de admisión al empleo (8.2 ± 2.5 años, med=8), las extensas jornadas de trabajo (7.2 ± 3.1, med=7) y los años que lleva laborando (4.5± 2.6 años med=4). Los niños mostraron una diferencias significativa en los problemas de comportamiento (26.3± 9.9) más que las niñas (23.9±9.3) (p=0.023) y respecto a las conductas externalizadas fue mayor en el género masculino (p=0.001). El resultado de la prevalencia de los problemas de comportamiento demostró que el rango clínico se correlacionó significativamente con el comportamiento general (conductas internalizadas r= 0.735, p<0.001; conductas externalizadas r= 0.693, p<0.001; otros problemas r= 0.729, p<0.001) al hallar que el 76.0% de menores trabajadores están en un rango clínico. Conclusión: El empezar a trabajar a una edad temprana es un riesgo para presentar problemas de conducta. Los entes gubernamentales deben ser más activos y apropiarse de su rol para el restablecimiento de derechos y actuar en los resultados hallados en la investigación para que se continúe monitoreando mediante más estudios e intervenciones.

La prevalencia de sintomatología osteomuscular en los trabajadores va en aumento. La influencia de factores propios de la labor como la postura, los movimientos repetitivos, el tipo de remuneración y los factores sociodemográficos como la edad, el sexo y el índice de masa corporal pueden influir en la aparición temprana de sintomatología osteomuscular. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de sintomatología musculoesquelética en trabajadores de una empresa Outsourcing operativa en la ciudad de Bogotá Colombia en el año 2016. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal para la estimación de la prevalencia de sintomatología musculoesquelética para lo cual se utilizó una fuente de datos secundaria de 323 trabajadores de una empresa Outsourcing operativa. Se tuvieron en cuenta las variables sociodemográficas y laborales. El análisis descriptivo incluyó el cálculo de la media y los porcentajes. El análisis comparativo se realizó por medio del Test Chi² con una significancia estadística p <0.05 para un intervalo de confianza del 95%. Por último se realizó un análisis de regresión logístico. Resultados: Del total de la población estudiada, la cual fue de 323 personas, el 55.4% de los trabajadores corresponde al sexo femenino y el 44.6% corresponde al sexo masculino. El promedio de edad fue de 30.34 años. El tiempo en el cargo que presentó mayor prevalencia fue entre 13 a 60 meses con un porcentaje de 60,7%. Para el estudio se incluyó la variable de tipo de remuneración con un porcentaje de 58.2% de pago por salario mínimo legal mensual vigente (SMLMV), mientras que el 41.8% de la población recibió pago por destajo. La prevalencia de sintomatología por segmentos en la población fue de 17.3% para espalda baja, el 12,1% para mano y muñeca, el 10.2% para piernas, el 7.7% para espalda alta, el 7,4% para cuello, el 7,1% para hombro, el 6.2% para brazos y antebrazos y el 2,5% para dedos. Se aplicó un modelo de regresión logístico, analizando variables de confusión e interacción, estas últimas no aportaron al modelo. Con la variable tipo de remuneración, se encontró una asociación estadística significativa (P= 0.005) con la sintomatología. Para las demás variables sociodemográficas y extra-laborales no se obtuvieron resultados estadísticamente significativos Conclusión: Teniendo en cuenta los resultados obtenidos en el estudio se encontró asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la sintomatología de los segmentos cuello y manos con la variable sociodemográfica (sexo) y la variable laboral (tipo de remuneración: Destajo). Para las demás variables no se encontró asociación. Se sugiere realizar programas de vigilancia epidemiológica para hacerle seguimiento a esta población y que permitan la prevención de enfermedades de origen laboral.

Introducción: La enfermedad respiratoria ocupacional es causada por la exposición a diferentes agentes en el trabajo. Las pruebas objetivas realizadas en sospecha de enfermedad respiratoria de origen laboral, son importantes herramientas que permiten realizar un adecuado diagnóstico, una detección precoz de la enfermedad respiratoria ocupacional, disminuye el progreso rápido de la patología, la morbilidad de los trabajadores y el impacto negativo sobre su futuro laboral. Objetivo: Caracterizar las pruebas paraclínicas de las patologías respiratorias de trabajadores, en un centro de referencia neumológico de Bucaramanga año 2014-2016. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo con datos secundarios de 96 trabajadores que laboran en diferentes actividades económicas. Se incluyeron variables sociodemográficas, laborales, ayudas imagenológicas y pruebas de función pulmonar, realizando 3 grupos de acuerdo a su patología que fueron: Asma, síndrome de disfunción reactiva de la vía aérea y neumoconiosis. En el análisis estadístico se emplearon medidas de tendencia central y dispersión. Resultados: De los 96 trabajadores 84.4% son hombres, las actividades económicas más frecuentes fueron la industria del petróleo y gas en un 27.1% y trabajadores en materiales de construcción en un 19.8%. En la caracterización paraclínica por grupo de patología, para asma predominó la obstrucción en la espirometría (46.9%) y los volúmenes pulmonares con atrapamiento aéreo (95.5%), en RADS (síndrome de disfunción de vías aéreas reactivas) los volúmenes pulmonares con atrapamiento aéreo (77%) y en las neumoconiosis para Rx de tórax (90.3%) y Tac de tórax (100%) reportaron alteraciones parenquimatosas, espirometría con obstrucción (54.8%) y volúmenes pulmonares con atrapamiento aéreo (62.5 %).Discusión y Conclusiones: Las ocupaciones de mayor riesgo para desarrollo de neumopatías de origen ocupacional fuero, , son la minería y construcción y para asma la agricultura y manufacturas. Para asma se evidenció que no hay significancia diagnóstica para estudios imagenológicos pero sí para las pruebas de función pulmonar. Para neumoconiosis el estudio imagenológico es el de mayor importancia ya que en las radiografías se presentan cambios incluso mucho antes de la afectación de la función pulmonar. Para RADS se concluyó que la realización de un test de provocación con metacolina sería el Gold estándar para el diagnóstico. Las pruebas de función respiratoria son de vital importancia para determinar la enfermedad ocupacional en trabajadores expuestos para vigilancia y detección precoz, es conveniente la realización de protocolos para la evaluación y diagnóstico de la enfermedad respiratoria de origen ocupacional. ANTECEDENTES: Los desórdenes musculo esqueléticos DME son una de las alteraciones más frecuentes y una de las principales causas de ausentismo laboral en el continente americano, y Unión Europea, generando graves repercusiones económicas a nivel empresarial, de la salud pública, y del empleado. Esto es debido a una sobrecarga laboral causada por los trabajos repetitivos, posturas mantenidas, y requerimientos de fuerza muscular, por lo que se hace importante identificarlos a través de distintos métodos ergonómicos con el objeto de generar programas de prevención que permitan la mitigación de los mismos. OBJETIVO: Determinar los síntomas músculo-esqueléticos y su relación con las condiciones de trabajo de los docentes de instituciones educativas distritales de la localidad de Usme, Bogotá, D. C. MATERIALES Y METODOS: Estudio de corte transversal, efectuado en 192 docentes que se evaluaran con el cuestionario Nórdico estandarizado de síntomas musculo esqueléticos y preguntas sociodemográficas de la encuesta de condiciones de trabajo y salud (ECTS) para caracterizar la población estudio. Para el análisis estadístico se realizó distribución de frecuencias y medidas de tendencia central y dispersión. La evaluación de las posibles asociaciones se realizó mediante la prueba de chi-cuadrado de Pearson, con intervalos de confianza del 95%, la prevalencia fue ajustada por género con los intervalos de confianza. RESULTADOS: El 57,8% de los participantes era de sexo femenino, el 41,7% tenían edades entre los 30 y 39 años de edad, el 82,8% de los encuestados manejaban grupos de estudiantes que oscilan entre los 20 a 60 estudiantes, del total de los encuestados el 42,7% (IC95%: 35.9-49.5) presentan un DME ya diagnosticado por un médico o servicio de salud. El 77,1% respondieron afirmativamente a la presencia de esta variable con un IC95%: de 70,3-82,8. En cuanto a la localización del dolor, se observó que la región del cuello con el 51.6% (IC 44.3-58.9) y región lumbar con el 49% (IC95%: 42.2-56.3) fueron las dos regiones anatómicas valoradas con mayor presencia de dolor. Se encontró asociación entre la edad y el dolor (chi-cuadrado: 6,858), el sexo y dolor (chi-cuadrado: 0.250) y el número de estudiantes con el dolor (chi-cuadrado: 2,179) CONCLUSIONES: los resultados obtenidos en el presente estudio confirman la relación existente entre la presencia de desórdenes músculo-esqueléticos (DME) y la actividad docente, pero se hace pertinente la realización de más estudios que permitan valorar los DME con el riesgo psicosocial, jornada laboral y tipo de asignatura que imparten los docentes en sus cátedras para este tipo de población.
