Microstrip antenna array for multiband dedicated short range communications systems

Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) is the key enabling technology for the present and future vehicular communication for various applications, such as safety improvement and traffic jam mitigation. This paper describes the development of a microstrip antenna array for the roadside equipment of a DSRC system, whose characteristics are according with the vehicular communications standards. The proposed antenna, with circular polarization, has a wide bandwidth, enough to cover the current European DSRC 5.8 GHz band and the future 5.9 GHz band for next generation DSRC communications. Nanofiltration for the treatment of coke plant ammoniacal wastewaters

This work addresses the treatment by nanofiltration (NF) of solutions containing NaCN and NH(4)Cl at various pH values. The NF experiments are carried out in a Lab-Unit equipped with NF-270 membranes for model solutions that are surrogates of industrial ammoniacal wastewaters generated in the coke-making processes. The applied pressure is 30 bar. The main objective is the separation of the compounds NaCN and NH(4)Cl and the optimization of this separation as a function of the pH. Membrane performance is highly dependent on solution composition and characteristics, namely on the pH. In fact, the rejection coefficients for the binary model solution containing sodium cyanide are always higher than the rejections coefficients for the ammonium chloride model solution. For ternary solutions (cyanide/ammonium/water) it was observed that for pH values lower than 9 the rejection coefficients to ammonium are well above the ones observed for the cyanides, but for pH values higher than 9.5 there is a drastic decrease in the ammonium rejection coefficients with the increase of the pH. These results take into account the changes that occur in solution, namely, the solute species that are predominant, with the increase of the pH. Nanofiltration of surface water for the removal of endocrine disruptors

The assessment of surface water nanofiltration (NF) for the removal of endocrine disruptors (EDs) Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (IGEPAL), 4-Nonylphenol (NP) and 4-Octylphenol (OP) was carried out with three commercial NF membranes - NF90, NF200, NF270. The permeation experiments were conducted in laboratory flat-cell units of 13.2 x 10(-4) m(2) of surface area and in a DSS Lab-unit M20 with a membrane surface area of 0.036 m2. The membranes hydraulic permeabilities ranged from 3.7 to 15.6 kg/h/m(2)/bar and the rejection coefficients to NaCl, Na2SO4 and Glucose are for NF90: 97%, 99% and 97%, respectively; for NF200: 66%, 98% and 90%, respectively and for NF270: 48%, 94% and 84%, respectively. Three sets of nanofiltration experiments were carried out: i) NF of aqueous model solutions of NP, IGEPAL and OP running in total recirculation mode; ii) NF of surface water from Rio Sado (Settibal, Portugal) running in concentration mode; iii) NF of surface water from Rio Sado inoculated with NP, IGEPAL and OP running in concentration mode. The results of model solutions experiments showed that the EDs rejection coefficients are approximately 100% for all the membranes. The results obtained for the surface water showed that the rejection coefficients to natural organic Matter (NOM) are 94%, 82% and 78% for NF90, NF200 and NF 270 membranes respectively, with and without inoculation of EDs. The rejection coefficients to EDs in surface water with and without inoculation of EDs are 100%, showing that there is a fraction of NOM of high molecular weight that retains the EDs in the concentrate and that there is a fraction of NOM of low molecular weight that permeates through the NF membranes free of EDs.

Imaging for radiofrequency ablation

Many solid tumors have a poor response to systemic chemotherapy, local radiotherapy or surgical recession. They are responsible for premature morbidity and decreased patient survival. The radiofrequency ablation is an emerging technique, and is now becoming more widespread throughout the world because it is minimally invasive, image guided, which offers the possibility of an effective and less costly approach. The procedure can be performed percutaneously, guided by several imaging modalities as Ultrasound, Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance. This article pretends to demonstrate the state-of-the-art of this technique focusing in the technical aspects and application of radiofrequency ablation.

O conceito da qualidade nos produtos à base de Ginkgo biloba comercializados em Portugal

O extracto de Ginkgo biloba é o produto fitoterápico mais vendido na Europa. Em Portugal e muitos países, a maioria dos produtos à base de plantas são comercializados como suplementos alimentares, não estando garantidos, parâmetros de qualidade, segurança e eficácia. Realizouse um estudo, com recolha de informações, tendo por base uma amostra de 50 produtos à base de ginkgo. Da análise, verificou-se que 94% podiam ser encontrados à venda na internet, e desse total, 89% possuíam informação on-line quanto à composição. Apenas 40% referem a utilização do extracto padronizado de ginkgo e muitos recomendam doses superiores às referidas como terapêuticas.

Distribuição de sinais rádio e vídeo sobre fibra

As comunicações ópticas e as comunicações sem fios têm sofrido uma grande evolução ao longo das últimas décadas. Com o objectivo de juntar as vantagens de cada um dos sistemas surgiu o que se designa por rádio sobre fibra. Este sistema permite centralizar todo o processamento necessário num só local, na estação central, simplificando assim a estação base. Esta simplificação permite reduzir os custos de implementação e torna o sistema menos complexo. Esta dissertação de mestrado tem como objectivo principal estudar e simular um sistema que permite o envio de sinais vídeo e rádio pela fibra óptica para posterior difusão, utilizando o conceito de rádio sobre fibra. Os sinais enviados foram o LTE (Long Term Evolution), o UWB (Ultra WideBand) e o WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). O primeiro disponibiliza o serviço de voz, o segundo disponibiliza o serviço de televisão e o último dá suporte à internet. Estes sinais foram modulados em OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex), porque, posteriormente, estes sinais vão ser difundidos num ambiente sem fios e este tipo de modulação minimiza o efeito de multipercurso e da interferência intersimbólica. Com este estudo pretende-se verificar qual a viabilidade de um sistema que permite o envio de três sinais distintos simultaneamente (serviço Triple Play). Ao analisar os resultados deste sistema concluiu-se que a sua aplicabilidade pode apresentar algumas limitações, dependendo do tipo de modulação e do tipo de modulador que se utilize. Os moduladores ópticos utilizados foram o MZ (Mach-Zehnder) e o EA (Electro-Absorption). A qualidade do sinal recebido foi analisada com base no valor de EVM (Error Vector Magnitude). O primeiro modulador foi aquele que apresentou mais limitações, pois o desempenho do sistema é comprometido para distâncias superiores a 40 km e para potências de entrada inferiores a 0 dBm. Este tipo de sistema apresenta um EVM mais baixo quando a potência de entrada utilizada está entre 0 e 6 dBm. Se o modulador utilizado for o EA, o sistema apresenta um EVM mais baixo quando se utiliza um índice de modulação entre 20% e 30%, para uma potência de entrada entre 0 e 2 dBm.

Identificação de pessoas numa portaria virtual

Ao longo dos últimos anos tem havido um crescimento elevado na utilização de dispositivos de comunicação sem fios existindo inúmeras aplicações nas mais diversas áreas, sendo cada vez mais uma realidade no quotidiano das pessoas e da indústria. Neste trabalho é proposto uma adaptação para módulos baseados no protocolo 802.15.4 de forma a adaptar os mesmos com características distintas das que possuem. Nomeadamente são desenvolvidos diferentes tipos de antenas (antena impressa simples, agregado com 2 e 4 antenas) para serem incorporadas nos módulos por forma a permitir a sua utilização num projecto de portaria virtual, que poderá ser utilizado em escolas, hospitais, empresas, por forma a controlar o fluxo de movimentos. Para além do dimensionamento da antena e a sua adaptação aos módulos são também efectuada alterações no software nos módulos de transmissão e recepção de modo a garantir que o controlo da passagem de utilizadores numa portaria virtual seja feita do modo mais eficiente possível. O trabalho foi realizado em varias etapas, efectuando-se primeiro um estudo detalhado sobre as comunicações sem fios e nomeadamente sobre o protocolo 802.15.4. Posteriormente foram projectadas as antenas e feita a sua integração nos módulos. Por último foram efectuadas uma campanha de medidas com vista a avaliar o desempenho do sistema.

Development of Dual Source Computed Tomography (Definition, Siemens Medical Solutions, Erlanger, Germany) allowed advances in temporal resolution, with the addition of a second X-ray source and an array of detectors to the TCM 64 slices. The ability to run exams on Dual Energy, allows greater differentiation of tissues, showing differences between closer attenuation coefficients. In terms of renal applications, the distinction of kidney stones and masses become one of the main advantages of the use of dual-energy technology. This article pretends to demonstrate operating principles of this equipment, as its main renal applications.

International mobility in the Pharmacy degree at the school of allied health sciences of Oporto

Background: The Erasmus program is a subprogram of the Lifelong Learning program, exclusive for Higher Education that promotes (among other initiatives), the mobility of students(studies, training or internships). The mobility of students of higher education seeks to improve the quality and development of future professionals, providing a multidisciplinary and multicultural experience. Setting: Academic Pharmacy/Pharmacy Technicians Methods: We conducted a descriptive and transversal study on the implementation of the mobility program and analyze the results, which involved applying a survey to students. Results: Since 2009/2010, the Pharmacy Degree at ESTSP has established 7 SMs protocols resulting in an average mobility of 5 students IN and 7 Students OUT. We have also endeavoured in SMp Protocols for extracurricular training with an average of 3 students OUT. The application process is normally open during the year before the mobility period. For most of the students involved, this was a first time opportunity to be in a foreign country and more than 70% choose the mobility program because it is seen as a possibility to improve their curriculum, for personal development or even to pursue employment opportunities abroad. The mobility for teachers is also encouraged. Conclusions: The exchange of experiences and training, acquired during cooperation activities should be an element of continuous dynamics and institutional affirmation. Initiatives such as the ERASMUS Program contribute to the educational and scientific enrichment, and promote international competitiveness among Higher Education Institutions.

L’hipocrisie dans Dom Juan de Molière

Dans Dom Juan, Molière continue son combat contre l’hypocrisie sociale qui caractérise la société de son époque et qui est symbolisée par la noblesse du royaume. L’originalité de cette pièce de théâtre réside dans la complexité du personnage principal, Dom Juan, et dans le mélange de religieux, de tragique, de comique, de surnaturel et de spectaculaire sur lequel elle est fondée. Dans cette pièce, rien n’est laissé au hasard: le temps et l’espace reflètent bien le caractère libertin de Dom Juan et le langage est une arme dont il se sert pour conquérir et séduire une femme. Le langage est ici un miroir de la réalité, c’est-à-dire du monde où tous les personnages sont insérés. Dom Juan tantôt utilise le langage de l’hypocrisie pour se défendre tantôt il se sert de la rhétorique pour séduire ses victimes: c’est à travers le pouvoir verbal qu’il arrache une femme à un homme. Le langage est la clé du jeu de miroirs sur lequel la pièce est fondée. Molière montre dans Dom Juan que le langage est un instrument dangereux dans les mains des hypocrites qui s’en servent pour défier l’ordre social, la religion, la famille et la morale.
