A personalização é um aspeto chave de uma interação homem-computador efetiva. Numa era em que existe uma abundância de informação e tantas pessoas a interagir com ela, de muitas maneiras, a capacidade de se ajustar aos seus utilizadores é crucial para qualquer sistema moderno. A criação de sistemas adaptáveis é um domínio bastante complexo que necessita de métodos muito específicos para ter sucesso. No entanto, nos dias de hoje ainda não existe um modelo ou arquitetura padrão para usar nos sistemas adaptativos modernos. A principal motivação desta tese é a proposta de uma arquitetura para modelação do utilizador que seja capaz de incorporar diferentes módulos necessários para criar um sistema com inteligência escalável com técnicas de modelação. Os módulos cooperam de forma a analisar os utilizadores e caracterizar o seu comportamento, usando essa informação para fornecer uma experiência de sistema customizada que irá aumentar não só a usabilidade do sistema mas também a produtividade e conhecimento do utilizador. A arquitetura proposta é constituída por três componentes: uma unidade de informação do utilizador, uma estrutura matemática capaz de classificar os utilizadores e a técnica a usar quando se adapta o conteúdo. A unidade de informação do utilizador é responsável por conhecer os vários tipos de indivíduos que podem usar o sistema, por capturar cada detalhe de interações relevantes entre si e os seus utilizadores e também contém a base de dados que guarda essa informação. A estrutura matemática é o classificador de utilizadores, e tem como tarefa a sua análise e classificação num de três perfis: iniciado, intermédio ou avançado. Tanto as redes de Bayes como as neuronais são utilizadas, e uma explicação de como as preparar e treinar para lidar com a informação do utilizador é apresentada. Com o perfil do utilizador definido torna-se necessária uma técnica para adaptar o conteúdo do sistema. Nesta proposta, uma abordagem de iniciativa mista é apresentada tendo como base a liberdade de tanto o utilizador como o sistema controlarem a comunicação entre si. A arquitetura proposta foi desenvolvida como parte integrante do projeto ADSyS - um sistema de escalonamento dinâmico - utilizado para resolver problemas de escalonamento sujeitos a eventos dinâmicos. Possui uma complexidade elevada mesmo para utilizadores frequentes, daí a necessidade de adaptar o seu conteúdo de forma a aumentar a sua usabilidade. Com o objetivo de avaliar as contribuições deste trabalho, um estudo computacional acerca do reconhecimento dos utilizadores foi desenvolvido, tendo por base duas sessões de avaliação de usabilidade com grupos de utilizadores distintos. Foi possível concluir acerca dos benefícios na utilização de técnicas de modelação do utilizador com a arquitetura proposta.

This work project (WP) is a study about a clustering strategy for Sport Zone. The general cluster study’s objective is to create groups such that within each group the individuals are similar to each other, but should be different among groups. The clusters creation is a mix of common sense, trial and error and some statistical supporting techniques. Our particular objective is to support category managers to better define the product type to be displayed in the stores’ shelves by doing store clusters. This research was carried out for Sport Zone, and comprises an objective definition, a literature review, the clustering activity itself, some factor analysis and a discriminant analysis to better frame our work. Together with this quantitative part, a survey addressed to category managers to better understand their key drivers, for choosing the type of product of each store, was carried out. Based in a non-random sample of 65 stores with data referring to 2013, the final result was the choice of 6 store clusters (Figure 1) which were individually characterized as the main outcome of this work. In what relates to our selected variables, all were important for the distinction between clusters, which proves the adequacy of their choice. The interpretation of the results gives category managers a tool to understand which products best fit the clustered stores. Furthermore, as a side finding thanks to the clusterization, a STP (Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning) was initiated, being this WP the first steps of a continuous process.

Recently researchers showed that more choice is not always better. Choosing from large assortments can be overwhelming, raising expectations and decreasing overall level of consumer satisfaction. Author contributes to existing overchoice studies by using real assortment of online stores to find influence of assortment size on customer satisfaction. 90 students participated in the main experiment, where they chose a smartphone case for their friend. Results of the study show that large assortment size leads to higher expectations, higher choice difficulty and higher level of satisfaction. This research does not show overchoice presence and author suggests future studies could focus more on assortment variety and more personal characteristics of consumers, like preference uncertainty.

This study aims to explore and understand what young adults’ duty free shoppers (18-26 years old) want and are getting from travel retail shopping on airport environments and to evaluate their satisfaction levels with the service. It has important managerial contributions since it is an important target in a fast growing market. An online survey was conducted with 188 young adults and its results show that young adults’ are somewhat satisfied with the overall service on duty free stores mainly in what concerns quality of the products and physical evidence of the stores. Results also show that the majority of buyers within this segment are price driven and strongly influenced by promotions associated with price reductions, and do not seem very satisfied with respect to that. This project aims to illuminate two perspectives on travel retail. On the one hand, it describes the main character of the shopping scenario at airports, namely the Global Shopper. It covers the entire profile of the referred character, the main nationalities that represent him and the current shopping trends of the passenger. Also estimates of the booming nationalities and the future purchasing trends are accurately presented. On the other hand, the travel retail market is analyzed from the airport brands’ perspective. It is described what is currently done in terms of brands communication in the top ten airports around the world and the expected future market retail trends. To accurately explore the Global Shopper behavior and purchasing preferences, a market research was conducted with a sample of 128 respondents, male and female, from different nationalities, age groups, occupation and education backgrounds. The essay tests hypothesis regarding the relevance of several variables in the purchasing process of the Global Shopper in order to understand the most pleasant way to approach consumers in travel retail. The main variables studied concern the reasons to shop at airports, to whom the passenger shops, the preferred category and brand of purchase, feelings while shopping abroad, impulsive buying behavior, brand loyalty, the use of mobile devices in the shopping process, brands communication at airports, pre-ordering online and the attitude towards self-service stores. Some findings were in accordance with expectations, while others were a surprise and may produce valuable recommendations for future travel retail practices. 4 The main relevant results concern two areas, namely pre-ordering online and self-service stores. Results showed a certain stress about not having enough time to choose between the various offerings in travel retail, as well as difficulty in dealing with crowed stores. However, pre-ordering online was not common, which would be an initiative that could solve the discomfort at airport’s stores. Moreover, self-service would promote efficiency in stores allowing passengers to save time if they already know how to go through the shopping process by themselves. Another possible recommendation concerns differentiating the strategy in travel retail for the two genders. Some differences were found in the categories bought by male and female, as well as to how brands should shape their approach concerning the demands of each gender.

Oxygen uptake was studied during the establishment of cephalocaudal polarity in the very early chick embryo, i.e., 10 hr before (stage VI) and at laying (stage X). Oxygen fluxes in minute regions of the intact blastoderms were measured in vitro by scanning microspectrophotometry in the presence or absence of glucose. The oxygen consumption of the whole blastoderm remained constant (6 nmol O2 X hr-1) throughout the period studied, although the number of cells increased more than twofold. The regional oxygen fluxes varied from 0.41 to 1.13 nmol O2 X hr-1 X mm-2 at stage VI and from 0.42 to 0.70 nmol O2 X hr-1 X mm-2 at stage X. At stage VI, the oxygen flux in the center of the blastoderm was significantly higher than that in its periphery. This pattern remained evident when the values were corrected for cell number or for cytoplasmic volume. At stage X, there was a tendency for the oxygen fluxes to decrease from the posterior to the anterior regions of the area pellucida. Thus the pattern of oxidative metabolism in the late uterine embryos seems to change from radial to bilateral. This change of symmetry probably reflects the process of formation of the embryonic axis. In addition, the fact that the oxygen uptake was similar in the presence or absence of glucose suggests that early chick embryos metabolize essentially intracellular stores.

RESUME GRAND PUBLICLe cerveau est composé de différents types cellulaires, dont les neurones et les astrocytes. Faute de moyens pour les observer, les astrocytes sont très longtemps restés dans l'ombre alors que les neurones, bénéficiant des outils ad hoc pour être stimulés et étudiés, ont fait l'objet de toutes les attentions. Le développement de l'imagerie cellulaire et des outils fluorescents ont permis d'observer ces cellules non électriquement excitables et d'obtenir des informations qui laissent penser que ces cellules sont loin d'être passives et participent activement au fonctionnement cérébral. Cette participation au fonctionnement cérébral se fait en partie par le biais de la libération de substances neuro-actives (appellées gliotransmetteurs) que les astrocytes libèrent à proximité des synapses permettant ainsi de moduler le fonctionnement neuronal. Cette libération de gliotransmetteurs est principalement causée par l'activité neuronale que les astrocytes sont capables de sentir. Néanmoins, nous savons encore peu de chose sur les propriétés précises de la libération des gliotransmetteurs. Comprendre les propriétés spatio-temporelles de cette libération est essentiel pour comprendre le mode de communication de ces cellules et leur implication dans la transmission de l'information cérébrale. En utilisant des outils fluorescents récemment développés et en combinant différentes techniques d'imagerie cellulaire, nous avons pu obtenir des informations très précises sur la libération de ces gliotransmetteurs par les astrocytes. Nous avons ainsi confirmé que cette libération était un processus très rapide et qu'elle était contrôlée par des augmentations de calcium locales et rapides. Nous avons également décrit une organisation complexe de la machinerie supportant la libération des gliotransmetteurs. Cette organisation complexe semble être à la base de la libération extrêmement rapide des gliotransmetteurs. Cette rapidité de libération et cette complexité structurelle semblent indiquer que les astrocytes sont des cellules particulièrement adaptées à une communication rapide et qu'elles peuvent, au même titre que les neurones dont elles seraient les partenaires légitimes, participer à la transmission et à l'intégration de l'information cérébrale.RESUMEDe petites vésicules, les « SLMVs » ou « Synaptic Like MicroVesicles », exprimant des transporteurs vésiculaires du glutamate (VGluTs) et libérant du glutamate par exocytose régulée, ont récemment été décrites dans les astrocytes en culture et in situ. Néanmoins, nous savons peu de chose sur les propriétés précises de la sécrétion de ces SLMVs. Contrairement aux neurones, le couplage stimulussécrétion des astrocytes n'est pas basé sur l'ouverture des canaux calciques membranaires mais nécessite l'intervention de seconds messagers et la libération du calcium par le reticulum endoplasmique (RE). Comprendre les propriétés spatio-temporelles de la sécrétion astrocytaire est essentiel pour comprendre le mode de communication de ces cellules et leur implication dans la transmission de l'information cérébrale. Nous avons utilisé des outils fluorescents récemment développés pour étudier le recyclage des vésicules synaptiques glutamatergiques comme les colorants styryles et la pHluorin afin de pouvoir suivre la sécrétion des SLMVs à l'échelle de la cellule mais également à l'échelle des évènements. L'utilisation combinée de l'épifluorescence et de la fluorescence à onde évanescente nous a permis d'obtenir une résolution temporelle et spatiale sans précédent. Ainsi avons-nous confirmé que la sécrétion régulée des astrocytes était un processus très rapide (de l'ordre de quelques centaines de millisecondes). Nous avons découvert que cette sécrétion est contrôlée par des augmentations de calcium locales et rapides. Nous avons également décrit des compartiments cytosoliques délimités par le RE à proximité de la membrane plasmique et contenant les SLMVs. Cette organisation semble être à la base du couplage rapide entre l'activation des GPCRs et la sécrétion. L'existence de compartiments subcellulaires indépendants permettant de contenir les messagers intracellulaires et de limiter leur diffusion semble compenser de manière efficace la nonexcitabilité électrique des astrocytes. Par ailleurs, l'existence des différents pools de vésicules recrutés séquentiellement et fusionnant selon des modalités distinctes ainsi que l'existence de mécanismes permettant le renouvellement de ces pools lors de la stimulation suggèrent que les astrocytes peuvent faire face à une stimulation soutenue de leur sécrétion. Ces données suggèrent que la libération de gliotransmetteurs par exocytose régulée n'est pas seulement une propriété des astrocytes en culture mais bien le résultat d'une forte spécialisation de ces cellules pour la sécrétion. La rapidité de cette sécrétion donne aux astrocytes toutes les compétences pour pouvoir intervenir de manière active dans la transmission et l'intégration de l'information.ABSTRACTRecently, astrocytic synaptic like microvesicles (SLMVs), that express vesicular glutamate transporters (VGluTs) and are able to release glutamate by Ca2+-dependent regulated exocytosis, have been described both in tissue and in cultured astrocytes. Important differences may exist between astrocytic and neuronal exocytosis, starting from the fact that stimulus-secretion coupling in astrocytes is voltage independent, mediated by G-protein-coupled receptors and the release of Ca2+ from internal stores. Elucidating the spatiotemporal properties of astrocytic exo-endocytosis is, therefore, of primary importance for understanding the mode of communication of these cells and their role in brain signaling. We took advantage of fluorescent tools recently developed for studying recycling of glutamatergic vesicles at synapses like styryl dyes and pHluorin in order to follow exocytosis and endocytosis of SLMVs at the level of the entire cell or at the level of single event. We combined epifluorescence and total internal reflection fluorescence imaging to investigate, with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution, the events underlying the stimulus-secretion in astrocytes. We confirmed that exo-endocytosis process in astrocytes proceeds with a time course on the millisecond time scale. We discovered that SLMVs exocytosis is controlled by local and fast Ca2+ elevations; indeed submicrometer cytosolic compartments delimited by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) tubuli reaching beneath the plasma membrane and containing SLMVs. Such complex organization seems to support the fast stimulus-secretion coupling reported here. Independent subcellular compartments formed by ER, SLMVs and plasma membrane containing intracellular messengers and limiting their diffusion seem to compensate efficiently the non-electrical excitability of astrocytes. Moreover, the existence of two pools of SLMVs which are sequentially recruited suggests a compensatory mechanisms allowing the refill of SLMVs and supporting exocytosis process over a wide range of multiple stimuli. These data suggest that regulated secretion is not only a feature of cultured astrocytes but results from a strong specialization of these cells. The rapidity of secretion demonstrates that astrocytes are able to actively participate in brain information transmission and processing.

Despite this recent finding, little is known about the specific properties of regulated secretion and vesicle recycling in astrocytes. Important differences may exist with the neuronal exocytosis, starting from the fact that stimulus-secretion coupling in astrocytes is voltage independent, mediated by G-protein-coupled receptors and the release of Ca(2+) from internal stores. We here take advantage of fluorescent tools recently developed for studying recycling of glutamatergic vesicles at synapses (Voglmaier et al., 2006; Balaji and Ryan, 2007); we combine epifluorescence and total internal reflection fluorescence imaging to investigate with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution, the stimulus-secretion coupling underlying exo-endocytosis of glutamatergic synaptic-like microvesicles (SLMVs) in astrocytes. Our main findings indicate that (1) exo-endocytosis in astrocytes proceeds with a time course on the millisecond time scale (tau(exocytosis) = 0.24 +/- 0.017 s; tau(endocytosis) = 0.26 +/- 0.03 s) and (2) exocytosis is controlled by local Ca(2+) microdomains. We identified submicrometer cytosolic compartments delimited by endoplasmic reticulum tubuli reaching beneath the plasma membrane and containing SLMVs at which fast (time-to-peak, approximately 50 ms) Ca(2+) events occurred in precise spatial-temporal correlation with exocytic fusion events. Overall, the above characteristics of transmitter exocytosis from astrocytes support a role of this process in fast synaptic modulation.

The aim of this master’s thesis was to make a qualitative marketing research and on the basis of this to develop a distribution plan for the case company Finnish 3M Ltd.’s wound care products. The literature review includes three important parts: distribution channel planning, the buying behavior of seniors, and special characteristics of health care products’ marketing. The empirical part of this thesis comprises two different parts. The first part is a marketing research, in which the buying behavior of wound care products is studied in Espoo. The research aim was to examine, in which distribution channels the wound care patients under home care would most preferably buy wound care products during the time period, when municipalities will not yet provide the products for free. The data was collected through semi-structured phone interviews and regular interviews, and was treated qualitatively and anonymously. The study revealed that the recommendations of nurses and doctors influenced most the buying behavior of wound care customers. In the second part of the thesis a distribution channel plan for wound care products was made for the case company 3M Finland Ltd. based on the results. 3M Finland Ltd. should focus on pharmacies, online-stores and municipal health centers as their main distributors.

Mobile malwares are increasing with the growing number of Mobile users. Mobile malwares can perform several operations which lead to cybersecurity threats such as, stealing financial or personal information, installing malicious applications, sending premium SMS, creating backdoors, keylogging and crypto-ransomware attacks. Knowing the fact that there are many illegitimate Applications available on the App stores, most of the mobile users remain careless about the security of their Mobile devices and become the potential victim of these threats. Previous studies have shown that not every antivirus is capable of detecting all the threats; due to the fact that Mobile malwares use advance techniques to avoid detection. A Network-based IDS at the operator side will bring an extra layer of security to the subscribers and can detect many advanced threats by analyzing their traffic patterns. Machine Learning(ML) will provide the ability to these systems to detect unknown threats for which signatures are not yet known. This research is focused on the evaluation of Machine Learning classifiers in Network-based Intrusion detection systems for Mobile Networks. In this study, different techniques of Network-based intrusion detection with their advantages, disadvantages and state of the art in Hybrid solutions are discussed. Finally, a ML based NIDS is proposed which will work as a subsystem, to Network-based IDS deployed by Mobile Operators, that can help in detecting unknown threats and reducing false positives. In this research, several ML classifiers were implemented and evaluated. This study is focused on Android-based malwares, as Android is the most popular OS among users, hence most targeted by cyber criminals. Supervised ML algorithms based classifiers were built using the dataset which contained the labeled instances of relevant features. These features were extracted from the traffic generated by samples of several malware families and benign applications. These classifiers were able to detect malicious traffic patterns with the TPR upto 99.6% during Cross-validation test. Also, several experiments were conducted to detect unknown malware traffic and to detect false positives. These classifiers were able to detect unknown threats with the Accuracy of 97.5%. These classifiers could be integrated with current NIDS', which use signatures, statistical or knowledge-based techniques to detect malicious traffic. Technique to integrate the output from ML classifier with traditional NIDS is discussed and proposed for future work.

Yrityksissä on viimeisten vuosien aikana alettu keskustella enemmän sairauspoissaoloista. Ne muodostavat monissa yrityksissä merkittävän kuluerän. Monissa yrityksissä joudutaan käsittelemään sairauspoissaoloja jollakin tavalla. Jokaisella yrityksellä on olemassa toimintatapoja lyhytaikaisten sairauspoissaolojen vähentämiseksi. Toimintatavoilla on tarkoitus tukea esimiehiä käsittelemään työntekijöiden poissaoloja. Työntekijöiden sairauspoissaolot, työkykyyn ja työstä suoriutumiseen liittyvät asiat ovat helpompia käsitellä toimintamallien avulla. Esimiestoiminnalla on todettu olevan yhteys lyhytaikaisiin sairauspoissaoloihin. On lyhytaikaisia sairauspoissaoloja esimiehistä riippumattomistakin syistä, mutta niiden esiintyessä usein, saattaa taustalla olla jokin muu tekijä kuin sairaus. Tämän tutkimuksen avulla oli selvittää eniten lyhytaikaisia sairauspoissaolojen omaavien myymälöiden työtyytyväisyyttä ja onko esimiestoiminnalla selkeä yhteys poissaoloihin. Yrityksellä on käytössään erilaisia toimintamalleja lyhytaikaisiin poissaoloihin ja niiden vähentämiseen. Tutkimuksen avulla pyrittiin huomaamaan onko jokaisessa myymälässä samat toimintamallit.

Hugh Alexander, b. 1780 arrived in Niagara shortly after his birth. He attended school and later apprenticed as a clerk. In 1797 he was granted 200 acres of land in Bertie township and became a merchant and trader in Fort Erie. He was the owner of a sailing vessel, the Chippawa, which he used to transport goods in the area. The ship was lost and/or confiscated as a result of War of 1812 skirmishes on Lake Erie. By 1812 Hugh Alexander was in business together with his brother Ephraim. The Alexander’s storehouse, store and house were burned by the British military when they abandoned Fort Erie ahead of the invading American military in late May 1813. At the time of the burning, Hugh Alexander was engaged as a Lieutenant with the 3rd Lincoln Militia. Prior to this Hugh Alexander had established a second mercantile in Stamford, opposite the green. Misfortune was to strike at this location as well when the British military abandoned the whole of the Niagara area to the invading American forces and the Stamford location was looted. After the end of the hostilities Alexander went on to rebuild his storehouse in Fort Erie and to re-establish his store in Stamford.
