Precipitation of rare earth phosphates from H3PO4 solutions

A study of several factors has been carried out in order to determine their influence on rare earth phosphates precipitation from H3PO4 solutions obtained after the treatment of the Kola phosphate rock.

In the present work, the thermal decomposition step of some lanthanides and yttrium compounds involving different ligand phenyl-substituted derivatives of benzylidenepyruvate was appraised by thermogravimetry (TG). A correlation about the metal ions content was made by comparison of the results obtained by TG and EDTA complexometry.

Neodymium biosorption from acidic solutions in batch system

Biosorption of neodymium in batch experiments took similar to 2 h to achieve the equilibrium biosorbent-metal for all microorganisms tested. The best biosorption coefficient at a constant pH value of 1.5 was obtained using the microalgae Monoraphidium sp. (1521 mg g(-1) cell), followed by Bakers' yeast (313 mg g(-1) cell), Penicillium sp. (178 mg g(-1) cell), and activated carbon (61 mg g(-1) cell). When compared to the biosorption of other metals, these results pointed out to the application of biosorption in neodymium recovery from acidic solutions. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. Synthesis, characterization and thermal behaviour of solid 2-methoxybenzoates of trivalent metals

Solid-state Ln(L)(3) compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y and L is 2-methoxybenzoate have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results provided information on the composition, dehydration, coordination mode, structure, thermal behaviour and thermal decomposition.

Constraints on spin-3/2 and excited spin-1/2 fermions coming from the leptonic Z0-partial width

We consider effective interactions among excited spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 leptons with the usual ones. Assuming that these new leptons are lighter than the Z0, we study the constraints on their masses and compositeness scale coming from the leptonic Z0 partial width.

Synthesis and characterization of β-RbSc(CrO4)2

Synthesis and crystallographic data are reported for the double rubidium-scandium chromate RbSc(CrO4)2. The parameters of the orthorhombic cell are a = 14.836(2) A ̊; b = 5.627(1) A ̊ and c = 8.835(4) A ̊, Z = 4. The compound is closely related to the lamellar double chromates with other alkali metal cations, iron, lanthanides and yttrium offering the advantage of obtaining inorganic materials for electronics. © 1995.

Study of the binding of Eu3+ and Tb3+ to L-phenylalanine and L-tryptophan

Trivalent europium and terbium ions have ionic radii similar to that of Ca2+. So they are employed as probes of calcium binding sites in biological molecules. These ions exhibit very useful spectroscopic characteristics, chiefly a pronounced luminescence. In protein bound lanthanide, visible light emission from the lanthanide excited states can be observed when UV light is absorbed by aromatic amino acids. Subsequently, the energy is transferred to the lanthanide ion. The present work was carried out to define the binding sites of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in complexes with the aromatic amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tryptophan. The techniques utilized were infrared and C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. It was found that trivalent europium and terbium interact with the carboxylate group of both amino acids. With L-tryptophan, the imino group of the indole ring is also involved representing another coordination site.

Efficiency of safety measures applied to a manual knapsack sprayer for paraquat application to Maize (Zea mays L.)

The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the safety of mixer/loaders and applicators of paraquat to maize crop by knapsack sprayers and to determine the efficacy of safety measures applied to the sprayers. Potential dermal exposure (PDE) was evaluated in 22 worker body parts. The Cu2+ cation of a copper-based fungicide was used as tracer in the spray solution. Sanitary pads and cotton gloves were used to collect the pesticide solution on the sampled body parts. It was observed that paraquat application in front of the applicator's body (0.5 and 1.0 m lance) is unsafe because PDE was 1,979.8 ml/day (for 0.5 m lance) and 1,290.4 ml/day (for 1.0 m lance) and needs 50-80% and 37-69% control of PDE respectively. Control can be achieved by the use of protective garment on the legs and feet only, which received 92-93% of the PDE. Switching the spray nozzle to the back of the operator reduced the PDE by 98% and was sufficient to make working conditions safe, while maintaining the efficiency of application and making the work lighter and more comfortable. Mixer/loaders received 86% of the PDE to the hands and the work condition was safe (MOS > 1), however impermeable gloves could be used as a further safety measure.

Supersymmetric Higgs boson pair production at hadron colliders

We study the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons through gluon fusion at hadron colliders in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We present analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, including both quark and squark loop contributions, and allowing for mixing between the superpartners of left- and right-handed quarks. Squark loop contributions can increase the cross section for the production of two CP-even Higgs bosons by more than two orders of magnitude, if the relevant trilinear soft breaking parameter is large and the mass of the lighter squark eigenstate is not too far above its current lower bound. In the region of large tan β, neutral Higgs boson pair production might even be observable in the 4b final state during the next run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Strong interaction effects in scalar top production

We discuss effects of fragmentation and hard gluon radiation on the signal for the pair production of the lighter scalar top eigenstate t̃1 at e+e- colliders. The main emphasis is on scenarios with small stop-LSP mass splitting, where strong interaction effects can considerably modify kinematical properties of the final state.
