In the framework of effective-mass envelope function theory, the valence energy subbands and optical transitions of the InAs/GaAs quantum ring are calculated by using a four-band valence band model. Our model can be used to calculate the hole states of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. The effect of finite offset and valence band mixing are taken into account. The energy levels of the hole are calculated in the different shapes of rings. Our calculations show that the effect of the difference between effective masses of holes in different materials on the valence subband structures is significant. Our theoretical results are consistent with the conclusion of the recent experimental measurements and should be useful for researching and making low-dimensional semiconductor optoelectronic devices. N+ GaAs-n GaInP lattice-matched heterostructures, grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy, have been studied by capacitance-voltage, current-voltage and current-temperature techniques. This allowed the determination of the conduction band offset in three different and independent ways. The value obtained (0.24-0.25 eV) has been verified by photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation on a 90 angstrom thick GaAs well in GaInP grown under the same conditions.

He II photoelectron spectra of La, Ce and Yb show features which cannot be explained in terms of single electron excitations. It is proposed that these are due to formation of electron-hole paris.

We have studied the temperature dependence of the photoemission spectra of La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0.0, 0.2, and 0.4) and found that the spectral line shape dramatically changes in the entire valence-band region, particularly for x=0.2 and 0.4. By contrast, the spectra of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 show no significant temperature dependence. From comparison between the temperature-and composition-(x) dependent spectral changes and the temperature-composition phase diagram of La1-xSrxMnO3, we suggest that the changes are related to the degree of hole localization on oxygen p orbitals, which is influenced by electron-lattice coupling and magnetic correlations.

InN layers were directly grown on Ge substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The valence band offset (VBO) of wurtzite InN/Ge heterojunction is determined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The valence band of Ge is found to be 0.18 +/- 0.04 eV above that of InN and a type-II heterojunction with a conduction band offset (CBO) of similar to 0.16 eV is found. The accurate determination of the VBO and CBO is important for the design of InN/Ge based electronic devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.A. All rights reserved.

The electronic structures of Nd1-xYxMnO3 (x=0-0.5) were studied using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) at the Mn L-3,L-2- and O K-edge along with valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES). The systematic increase in white-line intensity of the Mn L-3,L-2-edge with doping, suggests a decrease in the occupancy of Mn 3d orbitals. The O K-edge XANES shows a depletion of unoccupied states above the Fermi energy. The changes in the O K-edge spectra due to doping reflects an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The VB-PES shows broadening of the features associated with Mn 3d and O 2p hybridized states and the shift of these features to a slightly higher binding energy in agreement with our GGA + U calculations. The system shows a net shift of the occupied and unoccupied states away from the Fermi energy with doping. The shift in theoretical site-projected density of states of x=0.5 composition with respect to x=0 suggest a subtle change from a charge transfer to Mott-Hubbard type insulator. Determination of band offsets at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 interface using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
Resumo:
The Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 semiconductor heterojunction was fabricated. The structural and optical properties of the semiconductor materials were studied. The band offset at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique. From the measurement of the core level energies and valence band maximum of the constituent elements, the valence band offset was calculated to be -1.1 +/- 0.24 eV and the conduction band offset was 0.9 +/- 0.34 eV. The band alignment at the heterojunction was found to be of type-I. The study of Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction is useful for solar cell applications. (C) 2015 Author(s). Cu2SnS3 thins films were deposited onto In2O3: Sn coated soda lime glass substrates by spin coating technique. The films have been structurally characterized using x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The morphology of the films was studied using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The optical properties of the films were determined using UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer. The electrical properties were measured using Hall effect measurements. The energy band offsets at the Cu2SnS3/In2O3: Sn interface were calculated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The valence band offset was found to be -3.4 +/- 0.24 eV. From the valence band offset value, the conduction band offset is calculated to be -1.95 +/- 0.34 eV. The energy band alignment indicates a type-II misaligned heterostructure formation.

Thermoelectric materials have demanded a significant amount of attention for their ability to convert waste heat directly to electricity with no moving parts. A resurgence in thermoelectrics research has led to significant enhancements in the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, even for materials that were already well studied. This thesis approaches thermoelectric zT optimization by developing a detailed understanding of the electronic structure using a combination of electronic/thermoelectric properties, optical properties, and ab-initio computed electronic band structures. This is accomplished by applying these techniques to three important classes of thermoelectric materials: IV-VI materials (the lead chalcogenides), Half-Heusler’s (XNiSn where X=Zr, Ti, Hf), and CoSb3 skutterudites.
In the IV-VI materials (PbTe, PbSe, PbS) I present a shifting temperature-dependent optical absorption edge which correlates well to the computed ab-initio molecular dynamics result. Contrary to prior literature that suggests convergence of the primary and secondary bands at 400 K, I suggest a higher convergence temperature of 700, 900, and 1000 K for PbTe, PbSe, and PbS, respectively. This finding can help guide electronic properties modelling by providing a concrete value for the band gap and valence band offset as a function of temperature.
Another important thermoelectric material, ZrNiSn (half-Heusler), is analyzed for both its optical and electronic properties; transport properties indicate a largely different band gap depending on whether the material is doped n-type or p-type. By measuring and reporting the optical band gap value of 0.13 eV, I resolve the discrepancy in the gap calculated from electronic properties (maximum Seebeck and resistivity) by correlating these estimates to the electron-to-hole weighted mobility ratio, A, in narrow gap materials (A is found to be approximately 5.0 in ZrNiSn).
I also show that CoSb3 contains multiple conduction bands that contribute to the thermoelectric properties. These bands are also observed to shift towards each other with temperature, eventually reaching effective convergence for T>500 K. This implies that the electronic structure in CoSb3 is critically important (and possibly engineerable) with regards to its high thermoelectric figure of merit.

The valence band offset (VBO) of the InN/GaAs heterojunction is directly determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to be 0.94 +/- 0.23 eV. The conduction band offset is deduced from the known VBO value to be 1.66 +/- 0.23 eV, and a type-II band alignment forms at the InN/GaAs heterojunction. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Thin SiO2 interlayer is the key to improving the electroluminescence characteristics of light emitting diodes based on ZnO heterojunctions, but little is known of the band offsets of SiO2/ZnO. In this letter, energy band alignment of SiO2/ZnO interface was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The valence band offset Delta E-V of SiO2/ZnO interface is determined to be 0.93 +/- 0.15 eV. According to the relationship between the conduction band offset Delta E-C and the valence band offset Delta E-V Delta E-C=E-g(SiO2)-E-g(ZnO)-Delta E-V, and taking the room-temperature band-gaps of 9.0 and 3.37 eV for SiO2 and ZnO, respectively, a type-I band-energy alignment of SiO2/ZnO interface with a conduction band offset of 4.70 +/- 0.15 eV is found. The accurate determination of energy band alignment of SiO2/ZnO is helpful for designing of SiO2/ZnO hybrid devices and is also important for understanding their carrier transport properties. The valence band offsets of the wurtzite polar C-plane and nonpolar A-plane InN/ZnO heterojunctions are directly determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to be 1.76 +/- 0.2 eV and 2.20 +/- 0.2 eV. The heterojunctions form in the type-I straddling configuration with a conduction band offsets of 0.84 +/- 0.2 eV and 0.40 +/- 0.2 eV. The difference of valence band offsets of them mainly attributes to the spontaneous polarization effect. Our results show important face dependence for InN/ZnO heterojunctions, and the valence band offset of A-plane heterojunction is more close to the "intrinsic" valence band offset.
