Large-scale (∼109 atoms) numerical simulations reveal that plasma-controlled dynamic delivery and redistribution of carbon atoms between the substrate and nanotube surfaces enable the growth of ultralong single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and explain the common experimental observation of slower growth at advanced stages. It is shown that the plasma-based processes feature up to two orders of magnitude higher growth rates than equivalent neutral-gas systems and are better suited for the SWCNT synthesis at low nanodevice friendly temperatures. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

pplication of pulsed plasma for gas cleaning is gaining prominence in recent years mainly from the energy consideration point of view. Normally, gas treatment is carried out, at or above room temperature, by a conventional dry type corona reactor. However, this treatment is still inadequate in the removal of certain stable gases present in the exhaust/flue gas mixture. The authors report some interesting results of the treatment of such stable gases with pulsed plasma at very low ambient temperature. Also reported in the paper is an improvement in DeNO/DeNOx efficiency using unconventional wet-type reactors, designed and fabricated by the authors, operating at different ambient temperatures. Apart from laboratory tests on simulated gas mixtures, field tests were also carried out on the exhaust gas of a 8 kW diesel engine. Further, an attempt was made to test the feasibility of a helical wire as a corona electrode in place of the conventional straight wire electrode. A comparative analysis of the various tests is presented together with a note on the energy consideration

Application of non-thermal plasma for gas cleaning is gaining prominence in the recent years. Normally, the gas treatment was carried out at or above room temperature, by the dry type plasma reactor. However, this treatment is still inadequate in the removal of certain stable gases present in the flue gas mixture. We propose the non-thermal plasma process at very low temperature, and report here some interesting results of treatment of NO or N2O with pulsed plasma below — 100°C ambient temperature. Direct methanol synthesis from CH4 and CO2 at very low temperature is also reported. A comparative analysis of the various tests are presented together with a note on the energy consideration

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes were grown at temperatures as low as 120degreesC by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. A systematic study of the temperature dependence of the growth rate and the structure of the as-grown nanotubes is presented using a C2H2/NH3 system and nickel as the catalyst. The activation energy for the growth rate was found to be 0.23 eV, much less than for thermal chemical vapor deposition (1.2-1.5 eV). This suggests growth occurs by surface diffusion of carbon on nickel. The result could allow direct growth of nanotubes onto low-temperature substrates like plastics, and facilitate the integration in sensitive nanoelectronic devices. A real-time VHF swept frequency (20–300 MHz) reflectometry measurement for radio-frequency capacitive-coupled atmospheric pressure plasmas is described. The measurement is scalar, non-invasive and deployed on the main power line of the plasma chamber. The purpose of this VHF signal injection is to remotely interrogate in real-time the frequency reflection properties of plasma. The information obtained is used for remote monitoring of high-value atmospheric plasma processing. Measurements are performed under varying gas feed (helium mixed with 0–2% oxygen) and power conditions (0–40 W) on two contrasting reactors. The first is a classical parallel-plate chamber driven at 16 MHz with well-defined electrical grounding but limited optical access and the second is a cross-field plasma jet driven at 13.56 MHz with open optical access but with poor electrical shielding of the driven electrode. The electrical measurements are modelled using a lumped element electrical circuit to provide an estimate of power dissipated in the plasma as a function of gas and applied power. The performances of both reactors are evaluated against each other. The scalar measurements reveal that 0.1% oxygen admixture in helium plasma can be detected. The equivalent electrical model indicates that the current density between the parallel-plate reactor is of the order of 8–20 mA cm-2 . This value is in accord with 0.03 A cm-2 values reported by Park et al (2001 J. Appl. Phys. 89 20–8). The current density of the cross-field plasma jet electrodes is found to be 20 times higher. When the cross-field plasma jet unshielded electrode area is factored into the current density estimation, the resultant current density agrees with the parallel-plate reactor. This indicates that the unshielded reactor radiates electromagnetic energy into free space and so acts as a plasma antenna.

Simultaneous optical absorption and laser-induced fluorescence measurements have been used to map the three-dimensional number densities of ground-state ions and neutrals within a low-temperature KrF laser-produced magnesium plasma expanding into vacuum. Data is reported for the symmetry plane of the plasma, which includes the laser interaction point at a delay of 1 μs after the ∼30 ns KrF laser ablation pulse and for a laser fluence of 2 J cm−2 on target. The number density distributions of ion and neutral species within this plane indicate that two distinct regions exist within the plume; one is a fast component containing ions and neutrals at maximum densities of ∼3×1013 cm−3 and ∼4×1012 cm−3, respectively and the second is a high-density region containing slow neutral species, at densities up to ∼1×1015 cm−3.

Robust, active, anatase titania films, 250 nm thick, are deposited onto glass at low temperatures, i.e., 2.0 for the photocatalytic mineralization of stearic acid. These films are typically 6.9 times more active than a sample of commercial self-cleaning glass, comprising a 15 nm layer of fitania deposited by CVD, mainly because they are much thicker and, therefore, absorb more of the incident UV light. The most active of the films tested comprised particles of P25, but lacked any significant physical robustness. Similar results, but much more quickly obtained, were generated using a photocatalyst- sensitive ink, based on the redox dye, resazurin, Rz. All fitania films tested, including those produced by magnetrom sputtering exhibited photo-induced superhydrophilicity. The possible future application of PAR-DG-MS for producing very active photocatalytic films on substrates not renowned for their high temperature stabilities, such as plastics, is noted.
